Hey there, fellow weirdos!

Had a question proposed on my Facebook feed (My wife rules and loves horror movies so this isn't an issue for me), and I'm curious what you creeps think:

"So the wifey agreed to watch ONE horror movie with me in October as sort of birthday present. She never does because she is a scaredy cat so it has to be good. I have a few ideas floating around in my head as to what I will watch but I am curious to see what all of you would suggest I watch with her. ((Can't have any type of clowns in it, she will flat out refuse to watch it then)"

So, what movie would YOU show this girl?

Shaun of the Dead is a good one to break her in with. It's a comedy so its horror elements won't be as apparent and may even lead her to want to watch more.

That's the idea anyway :wink1:

Edit: If one thing's for certain, don't go full Texas Chainsaw Massacre on her just yet :lol

I was basically in the same boat with my girlfriend, who is easily scared.

After a lot of back-and-forth I got her to watch 'Paranormal Activity' and 'The Ring' with me.

She hasn't watched a single horror movie since then and I can now tell you the plot of 'Bridget Jones Diary'. So tread carefully.

Figure out what kind of movies she likes -- and why she likes them -- and find 'horror' movies that fit her likes. Also, figure out why she doesn't like horror movies, and steer away from those that she wouldn't like.

Personally, I don't like horror movies. They're not scary, and mostly either generic slasher schlock or grotesque torture porn. Waste of time. My wife loves 'em, though ... so I watch them more often than you'd think. There are individual 'horror' movies I like -- The Silence of the Lambs, The Shining, Jaws, Alien, Shutter Island, 1408, Shaun of the Dead, Identity, Psycho, etc. In every case, they bring something to the table other than trying to be 'scary' ... which does nothing for me. They're a cool mystery. Or a good character study. Or an interesting story. Or a clever twist. Or cool visuals. Or whatever. There has to be something especially clever or well done for me to like it.

If she's prone to being frightened, and doesn't like it ... there may not be anything you can do. If she's just bored, or eye-rolling, or immune to 'scary', then there are probably exceptions to her dislike.

That's why I'd recommend Shaun of the Dead for the part, it's not really that scary because of its comedic elements - and if she enjoys it she might be interested in watching more. It's a good way to introduce someone to horror IMO.

From a woman's point of view, try The Descent. It's all women and a pretty good scare. I think it is anyway.

Not sure I'd go zombie genre first unless she's liked that kind of thing in the past. For guys who don't like horror, the zombie genre is often an exception -- it's more of a survivalist story in a 'horror' setting, and brings out primal stuff in men. Despite not liking horror movies, I do like zombie movies (that don't venture too far into torture porn). My theory is that it's less about the 'scares' and more about "could I cut it?" challenge.

Chicks seem to dig vampires more than zombies. Not sure I can explain why. Maybe some weird '50 Shades' subliminal thing. Either way, maybe try a good vampire genre movie. Can't suggest one ... never seen a vampire movie I liked much (other than I am Legend, which has more in common with zombie movies than other vampire movies).

Classic black and white horror will work.

While less fun, horror doesn't have to be blood and gore. Ease her in with psychological horror like Hitchcock's Psycho or Silence of the Lambs. SOTL is the only horror film to win an Oscar for Best Picture.

Once she's comfortable with that then you bust out I Spit on Your Grave.
