Taking pictures of my figures and other toys is a part of the pleasure of the hobby for me. However, there doesn't seem to be any web resource suited to swapping hints and tips on this very specialised area. It isn't quite still life and it isn't quite portraiture (and it isn't something that tends to go down well on traditional photo forums, either). I am being nagged by friends to set up a forum for this. I am happy to do that, but I am not sure there are enough of us to make it worthwhile. Would anyone here use a toy photography forum? The aim would be to cater to both the committed and experienced photographer as well as supporting newbs who are just getting into it.

If you would use such a thing, what would you want to see in it?

And if anyone already knows of one, please tell me about and save me all this effort.

I know there are some books on photographing models, mainly 1/35 and military. Shepard Paine a regular at Fine Scale Modeller has one. Don't know of a dedicated forum though.

I'd sign up.

Great. Well, I am setting up the forum with a friend of mine and I will keep you posted. We have some basic sections and will try and keep it simple to begin with, as it is likely to be pretty quiet, at least initially, but are there any areas in particular you would like covered?

I will be doing a dump of all my tutorials to get it started, so there will be some beginners stuff, like explaining aperture vs shutter speed vs ISO, some bits on RAW and HDR and some post processing ideas, like the bleach bypass effect.

I will keep you posted on developments.

Alice Adrenochrome and OMG are two of the best photographers on this forum. Look them up and ask where they hang for their photobug discussions.

That is not a bad idea. I have scoured the internet pretty thoroughly and suspect that they probably do what I do, which is go on the mainstream photog sites for hints and tips and then apply those to this very specialised area. But, yes, I will see if they have any ideas. Thanks for that.

Any news on this one? I would love to have a forum dedicated to toy photography!
Light setup, outdoor options...

:)

Sorry for slow work on this. Real life has been getting in the way. We have a forum, just give me a chance to organise sections and stick a wee bit of content in and we are away. I will post the link to it in here shortly.

And, good as my word, which doesn't happen often, the forum has just this minute gone live. It is a rattling void of emptiness at the moment, but that is where all of you come in. Join up, ask questions, post solutions, do whatever you want with it. I have heaps of content to add, but getting my head around setting it up is enough for one Sunday afternoon.

Cool idea. I just checked it out a bit, but I'll register and post when I have some more time post-christmas.
I love taking creative shots of my figures, I just haven't had the time these past few months to do anything. Maybe this forum will spark my desire again. :)

That's great, agonistes86. I think a lot of us are in the same boat. My motivation for setting up the forum was pretty selfish, and was to give myself the motivation to push forwards and develop my skills by sharing info with others working on the same problems. I post questions on toy forums and there generally aren't enough people with the technical expertise to help. I post them on photo forums, and get treated like a three-headed alien for taking toy photographs, so this has to be the way forwards. We already have some interesting things to explore, like the light painting technique that I have been dying to have a go at and someone else has already tried. I am also having another go at the film noir style and am posting my experiments with that. It is getting a bit too technical at times, but my aim is to encourage people to keep it clear for the many beginners we have on there.

So far, it is building well. I look forward to seeing you on there. Get stuck in!
