Super Freak
I love cars. There is just something about them that makes my blood pump. The raw power, the excitement, the shaking and smell of burnt fuel and rubber stuck to the pavement.
My first car was 1980 Camaro. ____ Brown Metallic with tan interior. Had a 383 that was decent but the car was a POS.
I traded it for a Gold 1974 Datsun 260Z. Was fun but a slow car. It liked to overheat. I sold it when my brother gave me his 1972 Datsun 240Z.
It was red with some wide fender flares on it. Another fun car but it didn't run well and no one around here knew much about them. I was going to drop a 350 in it till I saw a ad for a 1973 Firebird and sold it.
Ah, the Roach, as my Mom called it. It was ruff but for $1000 it ran great and came with a ton of parts that I sold off. I can't find any more pics, but I restored the interior and put on new quarter panels myself. Never got to paint her because I ended up selling her for something more dependable. A nice 1988 Camaro 305 TBI!
I drove her for 8 years. Put on a cowl hood, crager wheels, chromed the engine and of all places had Maaco paint her one color. They did a great job for $300. I did all the prep through.
Then 9/11 happened. Cars were not selling. The Camaro was going away and it would be my last chance to get a new Camaro. I wanted a SOM SS, but there were none around. Even Z were drying up from all the deals to be had. My dealer located a 02 Z on a truck and had it routed here. It had everything I wanted but was red.
I didn't want red till I saw the car in person. I got it. Turned left out of the parking lot and continued to floor it down Reno Avenue. I loved it. The car my mine until . . . . .
. . . my wife saw a SOM SS at a local dealership. I looked at it that Sunday night and went back when they opened in the pouring rain and came home with her. I was in heaven. 2 new Camaros in my garage. I put ZR1s on them, SS hood and spoiler on the Z which I daily drove and the SS some goodies, 3500 TCI stall, TR 224 cam, Hooker headers and catback and of course a airlid. She was a fun car, 11.9 isn't blistering today, but was a fun full weight street car.
I sold both when we were going to build a house. The Z going away wasn't that bad but I felt sick seeing the new owner drive away in the SS . . . .
The house got put on a hold for a couple years because of the market and I wanted a Vette so I got a 2006. 3LT Z51 with a automagic.
I'm a Camaro guy that drives a Corvette. And wow, what a world of difference from the 4thgens. While not as quick as my SS, it is superior in every way except the radio. I'll keep her a couple years and get a Inferno Orange GS when they drop like rocks when the C7 comes out.
And that is my "sports" car story.
