Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier (SPOILERS)

The origin for the Winter Soldier is VERY similar to the comics, but with notable differences:

-Bucky is recovered by the Russians, not Zola or the Germans. Also, Bucky was thought to have "died" in the same plane explosion that Captain America was on. They had both successfully got on the drone plane to try and diffuse Zemo's bomb (in the comics, Cap is fighting Baron Zemo during WW2). Main difference was that Bucky was thought to have been dead for years and Cap is famously frozen in a block of ice. Turns out the freezing waters also preserved Bucky and he is recovered (with a missing arm) by a Russian sub. In the movies, he "dies" during the train mission and earlier than he does in the comics.

-The Soviet experiment on him, attach a metal arm and "program" him to be a Soviet assassin. He is constantly brought in and out of cryogenic status for missions by the Soviets, hence how he keeps his youth and only ages a few years when Cap meets him in modern times. This is hinted in the movie when they say he's been around like a "ghost" and has committed assassinations for the past 50 years or so. Also, the dossier photo that Cap sees at the end shows Bucky in a what appears to be a frozen state. In the comics, he even has a romantic relationship with the Black Widow (who later on hangs out with him a lot after he recovers his memories) and we see hints in the movie that Widow knows more about the Winter Soldier when she was a KGB agent.

-Winter Soldier becomes a "tool" of former Soviet General Aleksander Lukin (who is later possessed by the Red Skull) similar to the Soldier being a "tool" of Alexander Pierce in the movie.

-Cap uses the Cosmic cube (Tesseract in the movies) to help Bucky recover his memories.

-He basically looks the same in the comics, biggest difference is that instead of eye-goggles and mouthpiece mask, he just wears the standard mask around the eyes. This is probably why we saw Stan's Winter Soldier with the black make-up on in some filming shots as the look was intended to replicate the "eye-mask" from the comics. Obviously, it didn't make the final cut or the make-up was digitally edited out of most of the scenes.

So overall, the character translated VERY well from the comics and his origin is largely in-tact with mostly differences in the characters involved.

Future Predictions:

I think they are going to do the "Death of Captain America" storyline. They dropped several hints here and there and combining that with the backstage news we've heard, it seems evident.

-Agent Sharon Carter joining the CIA and making perfect shots. She is the one that "shoots" Cap in the story while under hypnosis. I really wish we saw more of her, but perhaps we will in the sequel as she is a VERY prominent supporting cast member/love interest in the Captain America comics.

-Brock Rumlow surviving, albeit scarred and wounded heavily. For those who don't know, though he is a SHIELD Strike team member in the movie, Brock Rumlow is actually a HUGE Captain America villain in the comics known as "Crossbones". He is a recurring associate of the Red Skull and is actually is the one who "kills" Cap in the storyline. He could very well adapt the "Crossbones" moniker in the next film and work alongside the villains to seek revenge.

-Arnim Zola surviving in computer form. Similar to the comics, Zola "lives" to the modern era from WW2 by putting his consciousness into a computer (robot body in the comics). If he survived, perhaps the Red Skull did in a way too?...At least his consciousness could...much like he had in the comics using the Cosmic cube. Red Skull is the main architect behind the "Death of Captain America" and he sort of "dissolves" in The First Avenger, leaving the potential that he isn't really dead and merely "ascended" in a way to pave for his potential return. Another potential villain is Skull's daughter, Sin.

-Sebastian Stan has revealed he has signed a 9-picture deal with Marvel studios and Chris Evans wraps up his Marvel contract (six pictures) after the Avengers 3 (with his last two FULL films before that being Avengers 2 & Captain America 3). This effectively lends HUGE implications that Marvel wants to go with the "Bucky Cap" route that they have in the comics. Assuming Rogers doesn't "bite the dust" in Cap 3 or Avengers 3, it's likely he could be paid nicely to have a large "supporting role" in Captain America 4 which might allow him to "pass the torch". Evans has also said he wants to "retire from acting and start directing" after he is done with his Marvel movies.

I thought VanCamp did a great job as Sharon Carter. She is right there with Coulson in that her loyalties to Cap never wavered. I am betting we may see her again in AoU and Cap 3 will open with Peggy's funeral and he sees here there and connects the dots. I wouldn't be surprised if they try a Winter Soldier stand alone to further develop the character. Cap did 10.5m on opening night so they have a LOT of momentum with this one and once word of mouth hits I think it will be huge. I also think that if Scarlett can carry Lucy, we will def see a BW film

I'm sick of the team thing. I've been a DC Comics fan all my life, but, at this point, it isn't about beating Marvel, for me. I just want them to be a success and get their universe moving so I can have twice the number of awesome comic book movies to look forward to each year.

Cap dropping his shield and allowing Bucky to pummel him repeatedly in the face with his metal arm was so poignant and brutal. Then that 3D effect of Cap falling followed by him being dragged to shore and Bucky walking off in slow motion.

I know! Bucky's twisted theme music/sound effects were rad and he looked badass with all mask configurations (full, half, and none.) And normally I'm the first to roll my eyes when comic book heroes take off their masks or spend extended amounts of time in their street clothes but it usually smacks of actors mugging for the camera but not in this one. It felt natural throughout and Rogers was cool in and out of uniform.
