Mattel plans to release a official hoverboard replica. Pre-orders begin next month, to be released in Nov 2012 if it reaches minimum order.

Finally! This totally awesome 1:1 replica of the hover board from the BTTF 2 and BTTF 3 films includes multiple whooshing sounds and will glide over most surfaces (does not actually "hover" – check back in 2015 for that feature). We'll be taking orders for it March 1 – March 20, 2012, and the final product will be shipped around November/December 2012. Because this is such a high-cost item, there will be a minimum number of orders required to go into production. If we don't receive the minimum orders, won't go into production and customers will not be charged. The price will be announced later this month. (Note: Hover board does not work on water.)

Prototype pics at Toy Fair does not look promising though. Looks cheap. Even if it's a stunt photoboard, it needs to be more accurate, hope they improve on the prototype.

Mattel is using screen used hoverboard photos from Profiles in History for their banner, which is very misleading. Bad marketing move by Mattel.

Here is the comparison shot, Mattel used the photo from the August 2008 Profiles in History auction for their banner.

Mattel, this is embarrassing. The main hoverboard photo in Mattel's banner is taken from Original Prop Blog's Comic Con photo from July 2008.

I would just like prop replicas of the boards from BTTF 1 and 2, not some wonky, half-way kinda sorta but not really working version from BTTF 2 that looks cheap and costs and arm and a leg. And they say a better version is coming in 2015, anyway?

that 2015 version sounds like a joke.

____ Mattel, ____ Mattycollector, and ____ we need numbers for us to even make it. Just they typical bs from Mattel and their stupid threats.

Is it possible what Mattel is showing is a quickly thrown together mockup for the show? I can't imagine the design being just one giant sticker. That looks awfully cheap, even for them.

I want one of these but am having a hard time wrapping my mind around how expensive a hard piece of plastic painted pink and covered with stickers would be a "high cost" to Mattel. The whole "gliding" thing I'm sure is for display where it does the whole floating deal that some desk nickknacks do and not to actually stand on so I'm still having an issue here.

I want one but I don't see this costing out of double digits really and I'm sure it'll be priced much higher.

it will have sound fx too, hence the higher costs. i'm probably gonna end up skipping it, as i'd rather just have a nice replica hoverboard with no gimmicks.

I'd love one but I have a bad feeling it's not going to happen.

They will only make it if they get enough preorders, and this is Mattel, enough isn't going to be a ltd edition of 1500.

At $120, the underwheleming 2 pg response here, and the fact they apparently don't want to advertise this thing judging by the no photos nameplate in front of it, seems like it's destined to be a pipe dream like Marty and Doc action figures were.
