View Full Version : The Official "I Saw Superman Returns" Thread-NO SPOILERS

I saw it last night at the Chinese. NO PLOT SPOILERS HERE.

Bryan Singer is the smartest dawggone director. He figured out that if you show due respect, the audience will let you do anything. He has shown real love for the Donner-Reeve movies. He does some heart-pounding sequences that couldn't be done back in 1978.

You'll find that all the preview clips you've seen involve at least some re-editing, so that while you've seen a few shots, the sequences will still seem fresh.

You'll be able to spot Noel Neill and Jack Larson's cameos without any problem. They're not so-fast-it's-distracting-to-catch "Easter eggs."

You'll be glad Tim Burton and Nicolas Cage moved on to other projects.

You will believe a man can fly.

Oh, and for my money (well, not exactly; I've ordered Hot Toys Supes) nobody has really captured Brandon Routh's likeness in 1:6 yet. It's interesting now to look at what the sculptors at Medicom and Hot Toys saw, or thought they saw. There are bits of him in each. Now that I've seen him onscreen I still think he looks like the son of Ken "Wiseguy" Wahl:

thanks for the report Gruff. im not a huge fan of superman as i prefer marvel's heroes better, but i do have tickets for the midnight show next week. i look forward to seeing superman on the big screen again!!!

~~so how did Routh's superman compare to Reeves' superman?? im afraid im gonna be biased while watching it.

Routh is to Reeve as Spacey is to Hackman as Langella is to Cooper...and as Parker Posey is to Valerie Perrine. (Posey is terrific in this.) It's a refreshed telling that still echoes the first two Reeve films. The only one I'd say is a total break from the 1978 interpretations is Kate Bosworth, who is completely different than Margot Kidder.

I've got a full schedule through the weekend, but I want to share some info about the costume from the production notes. The cape, which does have a leathery look in some shots, is made of wool and weighed ten pounds. The chest emblem is apparently embossed with tiny stamps of itself, which is why it looks textured in some still shots -- I only caught the texture in one shot in the film. I'll post that info as soon as I can get to it.

Thanks Gruff for the informative review! I'm very excited to see this film... I've been following it since way back when Burton was attached. And as big a Burton fan as I am, I could not see him doing a good job on Superman. Singer was a wonderful choice and from what I have heard, he has great respect for the character and for the Donner films. It'll be nice to see Superman on the big screen again, in all of his wholesome boy scout glory....

From what I have seen, Routh is perfect for the role... giving me a sense of Reeves everytime he speaks. I'm blown away already, and I still have to wait a week to see it!!

It's nice to know that I have nothing to fear now from this film. Thanks for the breather Gruff... :D

I haven't seen this film yet but it is now CONFIRMED that 2 more Superman films by Singer is under works.

READ:

Like we didn’t know already, right? Still it’s nice to have it (kinda) confirmed… the Superman team will be back for two more movies and frankly, some of ‘em can’t wait.

Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns has got the US critics stamping their feet with joy over a return to form for the man of steel. So the gathered press were desperate to get something on record about Singer and his cast reuniting for more Super tales.

Superherohype.com chased down executive producer Chris Lee and quizzed him on future plans. He revealed that Singer had mentioned jetting out to Lee’s Hawaii home to jabber about the sequels.

He also let it slip that all of actors are indeed signed up for two more flicks.

Easiest job in Hollywood right now? Brandon Routh’s agent. He doesn’t need to make a call for the next six years!

I'm going to see it at the IMAX theater on Wednesday night. My friend was on the post-production crew and says that it will be best in IMAX (I guess there's some parts that have 3D?). He saw the final product at the press/crew screening and says it's pretty good... not great, but pretty good. Some occasional bad acting and really cheesy lines, but, as you know from my feelings regarding X-Men: The Last Stand, I'm willing to overlook things like that for the movie as a whole. Although some of the lines in the trailer make me physically cringe, but maybe that's just because they are out of context :p I'm hoping that I'll like it - I'll have to get prepared by watching 1 & 2 before Wednesday! (Even if it's good, I have a feeling POTC: DMC is going to kick its butt at the box office :) - July 7th can't get here soon enough!!)

Well, techically you can't make that judgement since Valerie played Miss Teschmacher, and Parker Posey plays a woman named Kitty Koslowski. She's a big ol' polock, just like me.:duh

I also heard that some scenes will be in 3D. How does that work? Do you have to keep those glasses on the whole time? How do you know when a 3D scene is coming up if you take the glasses off?

The closest IMAX to me closed its doors a while ago... :sick

Supposedly a little "S" shield will flash when you're supposed to put the glasses on. That's why I'll see it in IMAX 3D AFTER I see it in a regular theatre. All the reviews have been out of this world, so I'm sure I'll be seeing it a few times this summer.

I love PotC, but Superman and I go too far back for Cap'n Jack ever to take his place in my heart.

I just watched the original too. Man there was some horrible dialogue in that movie, Margot Kidder is such a skank and the plot is laughable.

But Chris Reeve appears on screen and everything bad is forgotten.

As for PotC - Depp is so watchable and the movie is more fun than the ride ever was. The first one is probably the most fun I'd had in a movie theatre in a long time.

I am seeing Superman tonight. Finally!

I am a HUGE Superman 1 and 2 fan so my expectations are low. I am still very excited about Returns though.

As for Pirates, I hated part 1. It was just too corny for me and really dragged....the forced comedy was not funny. I tried to watch it again but had to turn it off.

Hopefully part 2 will be better but I doubt it. I like most Depp movies too but oh well.

I've never been a Superman fan. He's one of my least favorite superheroes. My only reason for seeing this movie would be because of Bryan Singer, because I think he's a good director. Superman Returns will probably be a rental for me.

I'm too hyped for Pirates of the Caribbean 2 to bother seeing anything else right now, anyway. I have midnight show tickets and I'm counting down the days. Curse of the Black Pearl is one of my favorite movies of all time, if not my absolute favorite. It was a perfect adventure movie with a good story, great characters, and everything I could want in a film - action, romance, drama, mystery, the supernatural....

I thought the first POTC was a lot of fun when I watched it in the theater, but I haven't bothered to rewatch it since. I'll probably just catch the sequel on DVD.

As for Superman, I'm getting goosebumps now that it's just one day away. I've been waiting a long time to see Superman on the big screen again.

Walmart had I and II for 5.50 each so I bought em and watched both over the weekend. I haven't seen them in years so it was almost like watching them for the first time again. Really stoked about tomorrow! I'm heading over to the theatre as soon as I get out of work. I'm the exact opposite. I saw POTC 1 at least 3 times in theater, bought the DVD and watched it like once a week for a couple of months :o Even my mother, who hates all movies except Star Wars, loves POTC - it's just too much fun! I can't WAIT to see Cap'n Jack back on the big screen. And the Kraken. And Davy Jones.

The only reason I'm going to Superman Returns on Wednesday is because we got free tickets from my crew friend. If it weren't for that, I'd probably wait a few weeks. The Superman films were never my favorite movies from childhood. Star Wars, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones - all WAY more entertaining and captivating for me (although Superman 1 is the first movie I actually REMEMBER seeing, when I was about 4 years old - I cried when his planet blew up with his parents on it :monkey2).

I'll let you know if seeing SR changes my mind or not :)

Josette

^ :lol That sounds similar to me. I saw it 5 times in theaters in 2003, and my dvd has been very well played. My mom loves it, too. In fact, I'm taking her with me and a friend to the midnight showing. She's the one that suggested a midnight showing in the first place!

The reviews on Superman Returns seem mostly good so far, and if a bunch of people start raving about it to me then I'll check it out on dvd when it's released in the winter. I liked the original Superman movie all right, but I don't own it and haven't watched it in years.
