WOW! I can't believe nobody has said these two.....

1. Alien - one of my top 10 films of all time! For the "chest-burtsing" scene alone this deserves to be on the list.

2. Jaws - nobody can deny that this is one of the scariest movies of all time. I remember watching it as a kid (AND as a young teen mind you) and afterwards I was seriously scared that a shark was going to burst through the floor and get me. Obviously I knew it COULDN'T happen, but that didn't stop the thought from scaring the ^^^^^ out of me!

Others:
Halloween
Blair Witch Project
Rosemary's Baby
28 Days Later
Dead Alive
The Shining
House of 1000 Corpses (movie FREAKED me out)

My list might change in an hour, but this is definately ten OF my favorite Horror Films if it isn't my ten favorite:
"Curse of the Demon"
"night of the Living Dead"
"Near Dark"
"The Haunting"
"I walked with a Zombie"
"The Hills have Eyes"
"The Black Cat"
"Alien
Suspiria"
"Dude, where's my Car?" This is the most horrorble movie I have ever actually sat through. Still gives me chills when I think about it.

I like all kinds of horror but my favorites tend to be of the psychological scares variety with some flesh eating Zombie action or splattery Giallo thrown in for spice. I'm a huge fan of Val Lewton and Jaques Tourneau but have been known to watch a Fulci or Argento flick now and again. And I love all the Universal horror icons. I guess I like a lot of stuff.

I can say at the time of my first viewing of the film(around age 10 or so) I didn't find it scary but it obviously had a lasting affect on me because I now have an irrational fear of deep waters and sharks.:lol

Okay, to be fair I would have to break this down into decades. Since I am not writing a novella...I'm not going to do that. This next statement will get me killed. I really do not care for very many horror flicks past 1970. There, I said it. That being said, there are honorable mentions, but my thing is vintage. So that is what my list will consist of:

1. The Bride of Frankenstein
2. The Phantom of the Opera (Lon Chaney Sr.)
3. Dracula ( Bela Lugosi)
4. The Wolfman (Lon Chaney Jr.)
5. Psycho
6. The Horror of Dracula (1958, Cushing/Lee)
7. The Curse of the Demon (Dana Andrews)
8. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Fredrich March)
9. The Pit and the Pendulum (Vincent Price, 1960's)
10. The Night of the Living Dead (original)

It's really not fair to ask someone whose collection of favorite horrors is in the double digits to limit it to ten.:D

The only problem with these lists is that next week after having viewed some other classic film for the upteempth time (like The original Invisible Man or Karloff's "The Ghoul", or the Hammer 1959 Mummy), they are subject to change.:chew :chew :chew :chew

I didn't like Cujo and never thought it was scary. It's definitely not one of Stephen King's better stories. He's admitted to not being able to remember writing it because of all the coke he was doing at the time.

I agree. But I think by the time I saw the film (in my mid 20s) and had already seen hundreds and hundreds of horror films before then jaded me ultimately to the film. Good premise (though not a very scary one IMO) but it came off a bit cheesy to me by the time I happened upon it.

yeh I guess it all depends on how old you were, how much you'd already seen etc.
For example one movie that scared the crap outta me was Ringu.
I watched it about 10 as well, I was home alone it was pitch black and the blinds were up. Basically I sat there for about 15minutes after it was finished because I was scared to move.
Funny when I think about it now, but Sadako was one scary girl(sucks its been ripped off countless times)

Yep, when I watched Salem's Lot I was 8 or 8 years old, so the age at
which you first watched these films makes a big difference on what type
of impact they had on you. If I watch Salem's Lot today, I still get chills
and then am a bit jumpy afterwards. The Ring/Ringu scared me even as
an adult, and it was only rated PG13! I applaud films that are rated PG
(poltergeist?) and PG13 that can SCARE better than the hack-and-slashers
that are pushing the boundaries of the R rating.
Scares are always better than blatant excessive gore in my opinion.
That is why the "slasher" type films just don't have much impact on me.
I went to see the remake of "The Hills Have Eyes" and it didn't scare me
at all, but "Silent Hill" actually creeped me out with it's atmosphere.

Here is part of what scared me so badly as a kid:

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/eC5HZzjjI9Y"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eC5HZzjjI9Y" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

I still get chills every time I watch it.

I haven't seen quite a bit & have the following coming in the mail as blind buys:

Cemetary Man
Dog Soldiers
The Hitcher
Halloween 2
The Innocents
Session 9
Spiral Staircase

Watched The Hitcher & The Innocents today and can safely say they have no room in my top 10. Rutger Hauer was haunting as the psychotic, self-confident, & daring hitch-hiker. The story flows well enough with a few sporatic scares, and builds enough tension to keep you interested. Ultimately loses points though for the lack of realism.

The Innocents was painfully boring and was the polar opposite of compelling. It never draws you in and only stays afloat thanks to an interesting plot aided by splendid acting & directing. No atmosphere, elementary dialogue, novice sound, and no jolts in the story to get the film moving in a direction you want to follow. An ending that is pretentious and ultimately leaves you cold.

You have got to be kidding,no atmosphere in The Innocents? I guess Scream is less painfully boring, huh?

I watched Session 9 today and enjoyed it. I know this is a top 10 thread so I won't post a summary for this one or any of the others, but I recommend this one over the previous two I summarized. :)

Session 9

Session 9 is an interesting film. I just saw it about a month ago. Some creepy moments but on the whole it didn't have much of the 'horror' film feel for me, it seemed much more suspense/pschological/mystery. Of course the horror genre is soooo broad but there are some films that get lumped into the genre that just don't seem to really fit there 100%. It had a good premise and of course watching Peter Mullan is always a treat (he's just so good at what he does in films).

JAWS

I really enjoyed the Entity

JAWS is a horror film. The Greatest Horror film EVER:D This film with the exception of The Exorcist scared more people then any other film in History. It is not straight foward Horror. It has elements of action, adventure, comedy and Drama. But deep down it gets us by our most primal fears. It's why it's not only the great horror movie but the Greatest film EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALIEN is a Horror film all the way IMO. It's horror with Sc-Fi elements. ALIENS on the other hand I would call Sci Fi.

I agree that Predator is not a horror film.

Halloween is a great film.

Some terrified me in the theatre, others were simply morbidly absorbing:

1. Alien
2. Bride of Frankenstein
3. Dracula (Bela Lugosi)
4. Pit & the Pendulum (Vincent Price)
5. Black Sunday
6. Night of the Living Dead
7. Ringu
8. Poltergeist
9. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956 original)
10. Phantom of the Opera (Lon Chaney)*

Honorable mentions to both versions of The Thing, Horror of Dracula, and 28 Days Later.

*Talk about your viewing priorities. I've owned the deluxe restored version of Phantom about a year and haven't seen it yet. The version I put at number ten is the one I saw as a kid...the ten-minute excerpt they used to show in the silent movie theatre on Main Street USA in Disneyland...scared me good, and also gave a feeling for the original viewing experience.

I consider JAWS an adventure movie with a horrifying climax, but I'd group it with the Indiana Jones movies, the 60's Harryhausen Mysterious Island and 7th Voyage of Sinbad, King Kong and other wonders. I may be wrong though. It may be the best horror film ever shot in almost total daylight.

Argh! I though a particular film was discussed inthis thread but it either wasn't or I'm totally missing it. Anyhow for the person who recommened "Grave of the Fireflies" (not a horror film) I wanted to say THANK YOU!!! It was a fantastic animated film. Just fantastic!

Buffy,

Halloween 2 is great. It's almost as good as the original. You will never think of hospitals the same! Plus, the Last Starfighter is even in it.

:)

Skip part 3, it is not a real Halloween movie.

I thought part 4 was really good.

Even part 5 is pretty good.

Anything after that just falls short though.

3 is awesome! It was Carpenter attempting to kill a franchise he didn't want. That's what I've heard atleast, he only wanted 1 and then the company smashed him into doing a second, than he said that'sit. Than they said more, and he said fine BUT NO MEYERS! Hoping the franchise would die after 3, but they got the rights anyway and kept going. That's what I've heard, I dunno if that's true though.

1.) Halloween
2.) Nightmare on Elm Street
3.) Dawn of the Dead (new one)
4.) 28 days Later
5.) Alien
6.) Aliens (although more of an action movie to me)
7.) Halloween 2
8.) The Excorcist
9.) Evil Dead
10.) The Thing

Old Gruff mentioned The Bride of Frankenstein...not a horror movie to me but it is in my opinion one of the best movies ever made period. Actually, I ador all of the Universal Monster movies. Although not great horror (in the scary sense), but great fun. However, the Bride stands out as because it makes a statement. "Let's drink to a new world of gods and monsters..." or something like that. Love that movie!!!!!

Cheers,

Brad

Predator, Jaws, and Aliens are all not horror films in my opinion. Jaws is more drama and action to me. Great movie and one of the best movies of all time..no doubt in the top 100 of all time. Aliens is Sci-Fi/action as well as Predator. Those two are in my top 20 favorite movies of all time.

Cheers,

Brad

Alien I can see as horror, but not Aliens. Predator NO, and Jaws is iffy to me. My wife says none of these are. I say Alien and Jaws are in the middle. Now Napolean Dynamite is a horror movie!
