So are people seriously disappointed with the rooted hair? It looks absolutely beautiful and is definitely the best option for the kind of hair style they were dealing with. IMO, the shorter the hair, the better it looks sculpted, but really intricate or long hair is better rooted. It also removes any possible issues with getting in the way of articulation, not to mention it looks more natural since the hair can freely fall onto things.

Regardless of the minor flaws, it's a great figure, esp for a female. Generally most 1/6 female figures look too much like dolls with bad headsculpts and poorly fitting clothes. I just wish the movie was better. It was horrible, imo.

Some collectors may jump on this ship late and have to pay premium, but not me, I have nothing invested in this film or interest in this line in general. Too many other releases that have my interest. I do admit that the rooted hair is an improvement to BW. But the blank, vacant look is a major turn off. It's not a 'Barbie' 'maculinity' issue as you mentioned in a prior posting (I have Triad LOLA and am happy to own as a one-off non-licensed product) , just a matter of choice. I choose to pass, but not pass-up the opportunity to voice an oppinion.
Again... good on those who are awaiting this and Amber.

these chicks aren't in the Avengers, aren't needed to complete a Superhero team with the likes of Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, and aren't based off an A lister who's considered sexy as hell. Plus they weren't in a huge blockbuster like Iron Man 2.

I would liked to have seen Thor with rooted hair.
Or the inevitable Conan with rooted hair.
I'm sure a bunch of collectors' heads would have exploded at seeing their ACTION FIGURES being ruined by DOLL HAIR!!!! With the increasingly irritating trend of collectors insisting ultra-realism, I'm surprised at the resistance to 'real' hair.

Could use darker pupils perhaps.
And her lips bother me the most... too defined and too much gloss. Emily's lips were always very puffy and without any sort of shine (giving it a softer look).

Yeah, those are pretty damn cool. Very nice job by HT on that but the rooted hair and the likeness aren't. Went and grabbed the art book I just got and its just off. I don't think the face is round enough and to be honest not enough baby fat still in the face. The face this piece has is very slender and I don't think she's quite that slender in the face. This is the one character I would consider buying from this movie (I really like the movie as a whole).

Why does it matter how good we are at sculpting? Their job is to accurately depict characters and we have every right, as consumers, to critique them on that job.We aren't asking for the impossible. There are always people who complain about a sculpt no matter how good it ends up, but this is much worse than usual and we know Hot Toys can do better. Not only does the expression not match the character at all, but the sculpt itself doesn't depict the character or actress well and that's a problem. Remember: this is not charity work. They get paid to do this and we pay a heft fee to get their works.

Id like to see more constructive criticism than more than 90% of the derogatory statements I hear in almost EVERY thread on this board. Of course this isnt charity work! But these people work hard to achieve just what you guys come to spend the big bucks on. And imo they deserve every penny for their work. Just like the Sucker Punch customs the guy made that were shown in the last thread, you people dont realize that these have already been through approvals from many other people. And the sculpt obvious got the green light. And people claiming they dont see the actress, well thats obviously based on opinion now, aint it? Cause for me I see Emily Browning in most of those shots. And one final thing, this is also a PROTO-TYPE. As with MANY past HT releases, the final product usually come out looking better than that shown in the Proto-pics. So instead of being so harsh, I think a lot of you folks should give HT they same kind of respect you would a fellow freak customizer.
I dont see people bashing some truely awful (not naming names) custom work on here. Its always lollipops and rainbows praising those people on how great their work is. But as soon as the newest HT figure is release its shat on before you have the figure in hand. Its a bunch of bollocks to me.

Yeah, I have 5 HT female figures (Connor, disguise Connor, BW, Chacha, and Jill BS).
No other company can match up with their fem figs... I get really annoyed when people try to compare them to stuff like Triad Toys. I've had three Triad female figs, and they're utter crap side by side to HT. Terrible articulation, flat paint, crap joints, crap plastic, breaks easy, and just plain looks cheap. Had to get rid of them.

I think the figure looks pretty good! I have one little gripe, though, and that's the eyes. Like some of you said before, they seem a bit dead and vacant...
But, I think it is an easy fix. They should darken the little bright ring they paint around the pupil and darken the iris a bit. I'll bet it looks a whole lot better then!
Overall a great looking figure though! :rock :rock :rock

I'm not a business man, but if they release each of these for the same price as spider-man, i'd get all of them to have the whole team.
Where as if they just release these two for a higher price it wont add up to what i'd be willing to pay if each was character was cheaper, but the team was completed over the course of a year.
That is because smart business's don't fill their warehouse with movies that failed at the box office. :monkey1
According to Nielsen's videoscan for blu ray/dvd releases - Sucker Punch has been number one in sales for two weeks now. That sounds like it's doing pretty well.

It is certainly not Yullis best work. Maybe she has been away from sculpting too long.
Regardless...

Wonder when these will go up for pre-order ?
I completely disagree with those who think Yulli didn't do a good job on this. There's just something soft and subtle about the features. She managed to capture the character in a moment of quiet intensity, where the eyes and lips are determined, but not overdone.
This matches Baby Doll pretty well considering how she is depicted in the movie. When she was in the fantasy world, she was just sublime most of the time.
The more I look at it, the more I like it.
If the PO doesn't go up tomorrow, I imagine it will be within the next week or so.

Face is awful IMO, and the legs are out of proportion. Browning is tiny, and not as skinny.
The actual production version could still be great though..
dominishin
07-14-2011, 02:32 AM
What are you talking about? Her body proportions is one of the spot on things about this fig. They made her pretty short next to Amber (which is good), but I guess we don't know how short that is in comparison to other HT.

But oh, we really do tend to pick and choose what we criticize I suppose...
I feel pretty bad for Yulli and JC on this. I think they did a really nice job with the character, but so many people are dumping on them like it's the worst thing ever. "Horrible"? "Awful"? I can see if people aren't getting the likeness to Emily Browning (although I'm actually pretty satisified she's there), but those kinds of descriptions are baffling to me. Could it be tweaked to look even more like Emily Browning from all possible angles? Maybe. But saying how bad this is...wow.

Thanks a lot bro, you totally say what I wanted to say in the previous Sucker Punch thread. People can sing praises like it's the second coming for mediocre customs but a 99% HT will get hell.
It's funny with people, when they are the underdog, we can excuse any mistakes but when they make it big, nothing they do is right anymore.
I think the much revered Tim Miller rant should apply here. HT don't really need approval from you guys because it has already been approved by the movie studios and whatever relevant party but I still see HT taking the effort in listening to fan feedback to improve the product more even when they don't need too. I think we should cut HT some slack.
I mentioned this in another thread before, people can still defend EB and Medi even when they really suck but people will lynch HT even when there is nothing else in the market even close to what they are offering.

Well said, i think the same thing, some people just wait for it to be bad and if they arent blown away its labelled as horrible.
IMO, there is room for improvement, but the folks who did this did a good job, not a job worthy of the constant critisism they get.

This figure is awesome. The headsculpt is sooooo close. Emily Browning has an extremely hard to capture face. I don't think this is as far off as Gentle Giant's. The only thing GG has going for it is the expression. her eyes look sadder, but HT's looks more like Browning. It is missing certain details that put it off and that would be all it took to make the discrepancyies noticable. Not important. As has been said, minor tweaks and it would be dead on.
Everything else about her is great. Paint is outstanding, Body and accessories too. No real complaints.

Figure looks very good overall... I will agree the likeness is a bit off, but HT does seem to struggle more with female likenesses. I'd give the edge on likeness to GG, but of course their final product will be a mess... whereas this is what you will get from HT, or there might even be some tweaks along the way.
I plan to see this movie soon, but even if I like it I doubt I'd get figures as the style doesn't do much for me.

IMO the film was eh, average (at best). However, the visuals were stunning. The visuals translate well into 1:6th scale figures of both Baby Doll and Amber.
The likeness is fine for my taste but I am not a big fan either. I may order Baby Doll for the style factor but it depends on price. $150+ isn't worth it for my collection with all the awesome licenses coming out.

Pretty awesome figure! I think it looks close enough for what it is, and it's damn close. This is the kind that will probably be rectified for the final release anyhow, so I wouldn't worry about that. The only thing I can criticize is how light on accessories it seems. I haven't watched the movie yet, so this really could be it for what you can package with her. Amber is even lighter. I would hope the price will be fair enough to reflect that.

And btw.. the face of this figure looks PRETTY MUCH like the face of Black Widow. It seems that HT centered they work on Superman so hard that the other pieces came out like sh___ :lol
I don't even like the clothes.. It looks like a Barbie.
Nice job on the hair though.
It's a shame, I thought that the promo pcitures were going to do it justice. But it just doesn't look like a HT piece. It looks uncareless.
I would have waited a year more to get a better figure :(

And in the close up pictures, you can see the clothes are sewed like a mess.
I've seen many HT pieces, and this does not make justice to HT work. At all.

After looking at the pics last night before I went to sleep I was like "Damn, Hot Toys Didn't bring their A game on these." Now after getting some sleep and looking at them on something other than my iPhone I like the sculpts, Babydoll needs a little work on her nose and Amber needs her cheeks shaved down a little and shes got that whole Black Widow low boobs thing going on but I like them.
Quick Photoshop Hack... (Noob at posting pictures)
I thinks the sculpt just needs a few tweeks to look like the attached thumbnail below...
Hot toys would monitor this thread, so just post constructive pictures of Emily/Babydoll so they can use them to accurately tweek the sculpt.

I know people freak out anytime someone photoshops a figure these days but your edit shows just how awesome she'd be all around if they got the likeness right.
From the neck down (which I *thought* would have been the most difficult challenge for HT) the figure is superb, IMO.

Yeah that bothers me too. Slight touch ups are one thing, but that shop looks like he just took a real picture of her and slapped it on the face of the original HT. I never really understood shopping these things to begin with though. It's a picture of a three dimensional sculpt being altered with photoshop. Doesn't make sense.

My point was how good the rest of the figure was aside from the likeness. His edit showed that with Emily's real face there (which of course HT couldn't do, duh) the rest of the figure holds up as is from the neck down, which I think is pretty amazing.

Her face should be much rounder, her eyes should be darker and larger, and the redness of her cheeks should contrast more. I can see small touchups down like with Kevin, but I think the overall sculpt is beyond redeeming at this point.
The expression of the figure is not of relaxed eyes like the movie poster--her brow is slightly furrowed, hence they don't appear as round.

I wished it had a better body would be my only critique. That is too doll like for a body. I mean HT hits the male bodies and how clothes flow down on them. They can make both lean and bulky muscular bodies that look real. I wished her curves were more real, even though the actress that plays Baby Doll has really no curves to speak of. hehe

Agreed. The sculpt is on the door step of being dead on. Hopefully, next week I can figure out what exactly for me would need to be tweaked but I might orders this (despite the rooted hair) because HT is most likely to tweak it.

Yeah man I hope Hot Toys just wants to ignore their customers and let this figure shelf warm for eternity. You do realize they consider our opinions because we are their target market? I don't expect them to listen to us as though we were their boss, but they want to please the fans if possible.
The response for this figure is FAR MORE NEGATIVE than a lot of the previous Hot Toys figures. With Superman, you had the occasional complaint, but it was next two entire pages of praise. Sweeney Todd is being universally praised for the most part. Most complaints with Odin are just that there is no Loki to pose with etc.. You look at this figure however and the most positive thing I see about the face is "I don't see why you guys are whining I will buy it anyway."

No offense to your shop good sir, but even if it did look a little better, there's nothing I can do with her vulnerable expression. To me, it's similar to a blank stare. I can't do anything with it posing wise. That's why I prefer smirks or anger faces or whatever matches the character. That way you can give them weapons and it actually looks intimidating, unlike with say Jill.

This is a 12" female figure and it will look like a doll especially in this type of outfit. I think many here are losing perspective of what this is. Some of the pics show as if the character has no neck because this is basically a doll trying to pull action poses in a school girl outfit. Females are obviously tougher to pull off. People ask for "sexier" expressions...but this is still a doll that you pose and stuff.
This will still sell well despite the complain brigade. Then those that pass will scramble to look for one at $250+ shortly thereafter. It's the cycle of Hot Toys...

You had to come in here to post that. Which means you weren't in here to begin with. :lol
Ummm... the figure is called "Baby Doll" ... I think that's what the figure is SUPPOSED to conjure.
Well I hope that Rocket ends up looking like a spaceship and Blondie is painted to have yellow hair then. :monkey1

I found that if you tweak the facial features a bit, the face shape seems rounder, without having to actually edit the face shape itself :D

Uhm... wow... no offense, but that looks horrible IMO.
I for one really hope HT won't change the sculpt too much, because the HT sculpt looks way more badass than Baby Doll ever looked in the film. Her face just often looked too whiney/ready to cry, while the HT sculpt has determination and more badassness.

I can't believe i actually like the Amber figure better... i think this looks ok, but female figures are not HT's thing just yet, they just haven't had the practice so to speak...

Larry I like the eyes and lips on yours... looks more like Browning to me :)
I agree with Entity: it's just two different expressions of the same person, and I'd prefer the one where she looks more determined rather than about cry. :monkey1
I guess tomorrow's HT POs from SSC will be Baby and Amber since SSC Alex confirmed the Toy Fair EXs won't be put up this month.

I feel like a mix between Larry's shop and the HT would be the ideal sculpt I suppose. A determined look, but with big eyes. Features that make her face look rounder. A more accurate nose and fuller lips. It seems like it would work out for the better. Even though she looks scary, I will commend Hot Toys for making one of the most battle ready facial expressions they've ever made. Give her a sword and it looks like she's ready to attack. Give Jill a sword and it looks like you need to insert batteries into her back so that she can come to life and then attack.

Hope they fix the sculpt a bit on her face, other than that, this is on my list of HT figs for this year.

If they made her eyes and lips bigger I think Baby would have a much better resemblance to the actress.

Uh, don't tell me, tell these guys asking for a more sexy expression, a better body and more accuracy on what is basically a 12" doll with swords and guns.

Am I the only one that has an issue with the gloss on her lips? She never had any! Her lips looked softer due to not having that.

It's funny that you categorize people who don't drool over this HT figure & may offer their opinions on what they dislike as 'whiners'. Did it ever occur to you that some of these same people were/are looking forward to buy this entire line of figures for their collection's? :slap
If you're expecting every post to be roses & rainbows from page 1 forward you're sadly mistaken. These figures cost too much money for people to just accept things they may find mediocre/poor quality without saying a word. :lecture
Great, but all you've been doing is replying to other (few) people who agree with you with emoticons. That's not making things any better. And HT sure isn't getting any help from it.
But wait a minute... it's okay to bash this without any feedback, but it's not okay to bash an (bobble-headed, stumpy legged, QC ridden) EB fig? Alrighty.

Yeah that's a nice shop. The changes are subtle which means they are a lot more doable than some of our other suggestions.

Looking at this more, it really pops now, it conveys a bit more softer emotion than the Icy stare of the figure at the moment
While it does seem to look more like Emily Browning, the expression also seems too passive for posing with guns and swords (at least to me it does). Maybe we are better off as is. :dunno

Great, but all you've been doing is following me around this entire thread quoting & commenting on all my comments. Why is my opinion so important to you anyway that you feel the need to reply to every post I make? If you don't like what I have to say then ignore it, simple as that. You're not making things any better by pretending the sculpt is dead on accurate either. Maybe you're & some other hardcore SP fans are ok with shelling out upwards of $200 for a mediocre sculpt & that's fine, but I'm not and I'm guessing others aren't either judging by the comments I've read. There are way more than a "few" people who hold the same opinion about the sculpt as I do, you're obviously in denial.
But wait a minute... it's okay to bash this without any feedback, but it's not okay to bash an (bobble-headed, stumpy legged, QC ridden) EB fig? Alrighty.
Where exactly did I "bash" this figure? You're exaggerating. The only comment I made that can be construed as negative was that I said this looks like a Triad figure, and compared it to Jade Van Helsing (which I think is a nice figure btw). If you don't like it, too bad. I never compared this to Lola as you ranted about earlier. I also said I think the clothing and accessories for this set are GREAT, yet you have nothing to say about that conveniently.
but it's not okay to bash an (bobble-headed, stumpy legged, QC ridden) EB fig? Alrighty.
This is the 3rd time you've brought up an EB figure from another thread that has nothing to do with SP during this discussion. I have no problem with legitimate criticism for figures for any company, and currently I own more HT figures than any other so you're not making much sense taking this path. If I see a flaw in a figure I'm interested in buying from HT or any other company, I'm going to say it and discuss it whether you like it or not. Get used to it.

You think so? I can imagine her with a gun aimed at someone's head while having that expression. It's determination, but not as aggressive looking. I think it fits the design more. Maybe he could shop a more dynamic picture with the same expression and see if it works.

It's hard for me to tell at just one angle. I guess it could work, but I'm already starting to get used to the original sculpt as it was intended to be seen, lol.

I fully agree dude! The likeness does improve a bit, but the determination of the look decreases.
I'd rather have HT's current sculpt than the photoshop one.
