Fueled by the massacre of 600+ civilians during the taping of a reality TV show starring the New Wariors the Government of the United States pushes through a legislative act forcing all superpowered people to "register" with the Government thus revealing their identities and powers and becoming glorified civil servants accountable for their actions.
This tears the Super Community into two sides, thus the Civil War. Those who don't register become outlaws and those that do are expected to hunt down those that do not. Etc.
So far the lead in has been very interesting reading. I recommend it to all.

No trades yet Dave, it's just begun it's year long run. I've been picking up all the Civil War titles so far. I thought House of M was kind of a dissapointment, but I really think Civil War is gonna be good. The New Avengers issue comes out this week, you might want to pick it up too.

Damn, I hate these waits for trades. I'm really curious about the new Crisis and 52 at DC - but damned if they're going to drag me to a comic shop once a week. I waited on House of M (yeah, a disappointment), guess I'll have to wait on these too.

im gonna go get she-hulk anyways, i want to read every comic that has tie-ins to the story so i know whats going on with it. i never liked she-hulk, spider-woman, or any of the other female heroes that are basically rip-offs of the male counterparts.

Hightreker
06-21-2006, 11:32 AM
*Spoilers* House of M was about the events after Avengers: Dissassembled. Basically the Scarlet Witch went crazy and created an alternate reality where Mutants ruled over humans. The thing was only Wolverine and this one other little girl had a memory of the world before. So basically from then on out they were trying to get heroes memories back so they could take down the Scarlet Witch and convert the world back like it used to be. I never really read the books after, but I think after the world went back, hundreds of mutants were without there powers, and Charles Xavier couldn't be found. Someone please correct me if I was wrong anywhere.
Mithrandier
06-21-2006, 01:52 PM
To inlude some more spoilers regarding Hightreker's spoilers in regards to HoM and Deadly Genesis:
Quicksilver was behind the change...........
Wolverine wound up having all of his memories as a result when the world was changed back...........
Charles Xavier can walk, but is a mutant no more..........
Hawkeye is alive and running amok.................
Wanda is alive and hiding out somewhere........
Magneto has no powers............
Polaris had no powers.............
Iceman subconsciously suppressed his but they have returned..........
Archangel or Angel has supposidly lost his wings, all but nubs like Gabriel in the Constantine movie.........
Chamber lost his powers....................
That is all i can think of at this time.............
Booyah!
06-21-2006, 02:12 PM
.........and the energy and powers removed from the all the mutants that are now left powerless has ended up in one man who is kicking some major butt over in the pages of the New Avengers.
Apparently no one can stop him, and it has been eluded that he is working his way toward the Scarlet Witch.....

Joe Q. was asked that since the new Hawkeye had already been confirmed, would we be seeing the old Hawkeye, Clint Barton anytime soon. His answer to that was thet you should be seeing more of Clint by years end and that although he does not know where he has been, he is sure to be having a devil of a time.
I took that as possibly meaning that he might be the one behind the mask at this time while Matt is in jail. Why else would he say a devil of a time? Pure speculation on my part.

Actually, Illuminati and She-hulk only have one issue. She-hulk is hard to find though.

If you are waiting for CW to come out on trade back: why read discussions on it?! (for those crying about spoilers)
so the guy who returned, how long was he gone for and why? Where'd he go?
I am following pretty much all the CW issues but kind of stopped reading Marvel religiously after the whole Ben Reilly debacle and restart of Spider-Man... (yes, a long time ago).
I can't believe that Mjolnir-Man (come on, get your comics in a timely fashion) is on the side of the Registrants... then again he was always a conservative guy... get the Hulk in there...
My biggest complaint? I don't think the writer(s) of that issue have a handle on Spider-Man and Peter Parker's character. I found it shocking and literally unbelievable that Parker would attack Cap America. In a previous issue they showed Parker's hesitation and anxiety about going against former comrades, especially Cap. And then Spider-Man quips and kicks Cap in the face... Boo! I really feel Parker would never do that, even given the stakes. It almost seems like the writers know Parker would really be on the side of non-registrants so to throw everyone off they put him on the other side. That's cheating. I read a bit on the build-up, I don't know how Parker got involved with Stark so intimately and why Parker said he owed Stark. Tony Stark has really become unlikeable to me. He needs a serious beating. I say Wolverine needs to peel him out of his suit!

Beren, is regards to your questions and taking your point that everyone hopefully has read Civil War #3 by now.....................Just in case though.................there be spoilers ahead..............so don't say I didn't warn you.................
Thor is the one who has come back and it sounds like a good chance that the guy in the Daredevil suit is actually Iron Fist(this is only speculation as in Cable & Deadpool, Deadpool fought DD and said something to the like of Deja Vu to which he has recently fought with Iron Fist and not Hawkeye)...................
During the Avengers Disassembled arc, in his own series, Ragnorok happened is Asgard. Essentially Thor died. This was never really played out in the MU though, only in Asgard. Thor at the time also had the Odin Power, for his father had died before him. It was funny though, that during this whole time after the House of M and Avengers Disassembled, no one made any mention as to where is Thor..................not Cap, not Iron Man...........no one.
As far as Thor staying on the Pro-Reg side....................I don't see that happening.................The Sentry is supposed to battle Wolverine in Wolverine on a Shield Hellicarrier........................but I thought I read some where that Thor and Sentry battle as well......................since Sentry sounds like he is gonna be on the Pro side, I forsee Thor, as well as Spider-Man switching sides.................
And thanks to the Illuminati (Reed Richards, Tony Stark, Charles Xavier, T'Challa, Namor, Black Bolt and I think Steven Strange), the Hulk is off Planet.

So please answer me this, when/how did Parker get more closely involved with Stark? How long had Stark known about Parker's secret identity? Why does Parker feel like he owes Stark and trust him even though everything in him apparently screams out that he is on the wrong side? Spider-Man switching sides? That idea gives me hope!! :o
How long was Thor gone? I mean in 'real' time?
So you think Thor is pretending to be on the side of the government? Guess we will find out on Wednesday!

I wouldn't say pretending, just miss-informed. Once he gets to talk with Cap.......hopefully talk with Cap................that cover of him burstin thru Cap's shield looks a little scary with someone big supposidly going to die next issue.
He has been gone for 21 issues of new avengers at least.
We really need to see what happened in between DB picking up the hammer in FF and Thor's appearance in CW #3.
Iron Man and Spidey started right after "The Other" story where Spider-Man changed and now has real web shooters. But I think it really took off from their relationship with the New Avengers maybe. Not sure on that one. I do know that Peter works for Stark now.

Anyone feels that the Pro-Registration side is too powerful compared to the Anti-Reg side.
In the Pro camp, we have the Sentry, Iron Man, Fantastic 4, Ms Marvel, Wonder Man, Spidey just to name a few. Maybe even Thor.
In the Anti camp, we have Cap America (essentially no powers), Cloak/Dagger, Hercules, Young Avengers, etc...
It seems in a fair fight, like issue 3, the Anti camp will get beaten to a pulp every time. I wonder why Marvel was so lopsided with the power balance?
But the Civil War storyline is one of the best comics storyline that I have seen in a long time. Thanks Marvel!!!

Right now, as of issue 3, Thor is on the Pro-Registration side. Shield and Iron Man called him Operation Lightning, or something to that effect.
In FF Civil War, some dude (don't know who) picked up the Thor's hammer which crash landed in middle America bringing with it Dr. Doom. This storyline seems too outlandish to me even for Marvel.

Good point! I forgot about the 198 and the Hulk. I think they will turn the tables soon.
Can't believe Iron Man almost killed Captain America. They were friends for eons!!! They were part of the Avengers going way way back!! I just don't buy it that Tony would hit the Captain so hard. Given, if Tony wanted to, he could vaporize Captain America.....but that brawl was brutal. Spiderman also attacked the Captain which I don't buy as well. Read SpiderMan 534 today... my hopes for Spidey are up... his inner conflict bared for the reader.
I'm guessing though that this issue takes place BEFORE CW#3? Would have been helpful to read that issue before #3... Spidey and Cap already traded fisticuffs one-on-one in #534. And the moment is SO cool when a speck of distrust starts to arise in Peter about Tony Stark, in how Iron Man is utilizing Spider-Man and Peter asks why Tony is using him in a certain way vs how Peter would have handled the situation (readers will know what I'm talkin' about).

I just read #3 last night. I've been trying to stay away from this thread but damn this is a good storyline.
Captain America has gone from goody-2-shoes recognizable icon to the forefront as one of the premier heroes in all of comics. This story had done more for his profile than the John Cassaday and the Ed Brubaker runs put together.
I think the tables will turn when the mutants realize they are next. The obvious next step is to bring the hammer down on the mutants that are left after House of M once the non-mutant metas are dealt with. That may be something that Iron Man is not aware of and will probably be forced upon him.

At the end of Civil War # 3, Thor shows up in the middle of battle.
Then, in Spiderman Civil War # 534, the battle is over and no mention of Thor and how some of the Anti-Registration heroes got captured and some didn't.
I suppose this loose end will be wrapped up in Civil War #4, but this Spiderman issue jumped the gun.

Spider-Man makes a reference in 534 how Cap America doesn't know his suit yet and hits him him with one of his retractable arms, taking Cap by surprise. In CW #3, Cap tells a team mate about Spider-Man's suit's abilities, ergo... 534 chronologically before CW #3. :)

From what I've gathered, there is like 7 issues of "Civil War" and then it also intigrates itself into some of the other characters' comics as well? Is there a list or a website that lists all of this issues in order or at least just all of them?
From what I understand of the comic itself, Iron Man is the leader for super-power registration and Capt. America is the leader of anti-registration. The heros pick sides, and some like some X-men are neutral. Am I somewhat getting this or am I way off? :lol

All three thought those are good ideas. So then I say, "But if a comet passes over a park giving hundreds of people, from infants to the elderly, the power to level a city block with a thought, having them register that ability is unfairly infringing on their rights?" While your points are valid, there are more things to consider:
(1) Giving up your secret identity would put your loved ones in danger.
(2) Registration means being singled out because you are different. Getting a license to drive, own a gun, etc.. is ok because you choose to engage in these activites. But if you are a mutant or have superpowers like Spidey, you don't have a choice. Registration didn't go so well for the Japanese Americans interned during WWII and even worse for Jews in the Holocaust.
Once you registrated, the government owns you. Do you want to be owned by the government and be told what you have to do? Wouldn't you rather have the choice on what you would like to do with your powers?
I think both sides have valid points, it boils down to what is important to you personally and what you have to gain or lose from registration.

This sort of sums up why a character like Captain America knows the consequences of what registration leads to. He was there fighting during that era.

A question about Kingdom Come/ Civil War similarities was asked at the Civil War panel at Comic Con, but Joe Q. looked at the guy like he was crazy and said he didn't see any similarities. I've never read Kingdom Come before, but apparently you're not alone in thinking this. What similarities are there?
SolidLiquidFox
08-04-2006, 06:30 PM
Kingdom Come basically is a story set in the future of the DC Universe where the classic heroes have retired and a new breed of heroes has taken over. The new heroes are more violent and have very little regard for protecting the public. If innocent folks get hurt during a battle with the bad guys so be it.
The event that sets off Kingdom Come is Captain Atom being torn open by Parasite in a clear gesture of overkill by a group of "heroes". Captain Atom's radiation killed most of Kansas and a good part of the mid western United States. This can be argued to be parallel to the Civil War destruction of the city with all the innocent people. There is also the picking of sides by heroes that side with Superman's Justice League and those that side with Batman's group.
Superman's group, similar to Civil War's registration side, arrests the heroes that are deemed dangerous while Batman's side knows that approach will lead to a disaster (which it does). Joe Quesada denying any similarities is ridiculous.

1.) There is a Mike Turner varinat cover for each one (1-3 so far) and a sketch cover (Black and white) of that variant cover. Also, for issue number 3 there is an Ed McGuinnes variant cover.
2.) I have both the regular and the directors cut of #1, and I only flipped through the directors cut, but it seems as if all it has is extra interviews and pictures of the original sketches.
3.) I'll have to get back to you on the list of all that's out so far, or mabe someone else can chime in with the complete list, but off the top of my head (including road to civil war) Amazing Spidey 528-534, Fantastic Four 536-539, New Avenegrs 22-23, Civil War 1-3, X Factor 8-9, Two issues of thunderbolts, one issue of cable and deadpool, she hulk #8, wolverine #42-44, civil war x-men #1, young avengers and runaways #1, and New Avengers illumanati.

Yeah, Kingdom Come is perhaps the highlight of Alex Ross' career in my opinion.
My advise on variant covers: do not worry about them. You can never keep up and the art for them is usually found on the hardcovers. The Director's Cuts are a good way to pick up a meatier version of a popular #1 issue instead of a second printing or a variant cover.

While I doubt the death is going to be Captain America or Iron Man, do you guys think either of them or both of them will end up dying in the end? I think Cap could, not sure about Iron Man though. Cap seems more like the guy to " die for the cause" than Iron Man.

In regards to Civil War #4, Joe Quesada has said "Thor kicks some major ass and one of Marvel’s biggest characters has a bad day!"..............www.newsarama.com is where the quote was taken from.
The biggest character thing might possibly mean anyone of the super heros that grow in size, not necessarily popularity. Millar has a knack for killing Giant oversized characters. Maybe Thor flies through Goliath's chest or something.
I for one am not upset with the delay. It has been stated that it is for quality reasons. They do not want a fill-in artist on a project of this magnitude. But even if they are re-writing it, so long as it has quality, I am still there.

Yeah, I'm not too sore about the lateness either. As long as it remains as kickass as it has been so far I am a happy camper. This series has pushed buttons amongst fans that haven't been pushed in a long time. People are debating in comic shops all around the country, groups in every city DIVIDED right down the middle. It's what makes this story so realistic and fun to read. You can see where both sides come from, no matter where your allegiances lie.
I side with Cap on this one, though. Secret Identities are a big part of being a hero, and when you are one of the guys on the street.... you need to be able to escape it and not have your villains attacking your grandmother. Plus, I don't agree with anything that is FORCED upon someone, no matter how good it may be. When people lose their freedom of choice, I draw the line. Nothing like that should ever be controlled by the government. And not to mention that the military would start to use the superheroes as assets in their own silly oil wars.... and that is a truly scary thing to fathom.

Really? I thought House of M wasn't too bad. My only beef with civil war is that after #3, schedule of releases isn't keeping up. :( That just means I have to wait longer to see Thor put a lightning bolt through someone's chest. Any mark my words, spider-man will turn on iron man before the end.

Once you registrated, the government owns you. Do you want to be owned by the government and be told what you have to do? Wouldn't you rather have the choice on what you would like to do with your powers?
I think both sides have valid points, it boils down to what is important to you personally and what you have to gain or lose from registration.
Hey Duckgoo, I know what you're saying, but we "register" for a social security number so that the goverment can take our money and spread it around for the "good of all". We're "registering" when we send in our taxes, telling the IRS everything about our income, place we live, etc when we pay our taxes (again, for the "good of all").
So I suppose if all the anti-registration people would also say that it'd be okay for people who don't want to register with/pay to Social Security because they'll provide for their own retirement that would be a little more consistent. And if people who want to provide for their own medical care don't want to contribute to any kind of medicare or national health care they should be allowed to opt-out and go their own way, unemcumbered by the government telling them what they should or shouldn't do with their lives. You could say that having to register for those things hurts your family by hurting you financially when the goverment takes your money from you.
Really I just like to point out when people are being hypocritical. I find that people want us to register for certain things that suit their fancy (i.e. political ideology) and not to register for things that don't (i.e. liberals want people to have to register guns, fly a plane, drive a car, pay taxes be part of social security and contribute to national health care all things that give up individual freedoms, but registering for anything that sets an individual apart, even one that could commit mass murder on an epic scale with a thought, that's unacceptable. Conservatives, on the other hand, want people to have to register for the Selective Service, pilot's licenses, driver's licenses, etc. want the gov't to tell scientists what stem cell lines they can use, want the gov't to limit abortion and birth control and to limit what we see on the public TV airwaves (murder and violence OK, a bare breast? call the FCC!!!!! :rotfl )

I don't think your example of social security registration is valid.
The superheroes have to register because they are different than the rest of America. It's like saying if you are middle eastern in the US, you have to register. If you are non-middle eastern, then you don't have to register.
Once the government starts to treat a group of people different, then our democracy falls apart.
Why do you think Captain America is anti-registration.
These superheroes didn't have a choice with their superpowers, they can't just turn them off. Take mutants for example.
I understand that superheroes are capable of massive destruction, but they are also capable of massive good.

Since we already register in a way with Social Security, firearms, etc. It would make perfect sense for those with special abilities to registar them. If people can blow up things with their mind is it OK to let them go about blowing up people or things as they wish? It would only serve as a saftey percaution to regular people. Not every special person would have to be a government agent. I just think the registration would help prevent more events like the one in Civil War #1.
Although I can totally see Captain America's viewpoint.
I wonder if we the readers will have any influence on the outcome of the war. For example, the issue of Batman where the readers could call a number if they wanted Robin to live and a differnent number if they wanted to die. I think it would be interesting to see where the majority of the readers will actually side with.

The racial comparison is not valid in the case of all the heroes that rely on a weapon, ring, hammer, amulet, etc that either gives them their power, or enhances it, an item they CHOOSE to use.
I know the argument is about registering the hero themselves, but what about registration of the items of power for those that wield them, and have no other source of power? In those cases it's nothing like race at all, in cases of a hero carrying/wearing/wielding a potentiall deadly item/weapon, it's a CHOICE.
Captain America CHOOSES to carry around a shield that can be a deadly weapon or a way to defend himself. He shouldn't have to register the shield, but I should have to register a gun which is also a deadly weapon but also a potential way to defend myself should I be attacked?
Thor carries a hammer and many other superheroes CHOOSE to carry items that can cause great destruction.
yeah, some of those guys have powers beyond just the items, but what of everyday ordinary people that choose to be superheroes because the create a suit of armor, find a ring or amulet/carry/wield some magical powerful item? They choose it, it isn't like race at all.
How is it democratic that someone who is like anyone else can find an amulet/put on or inherit a ring, carry a shield or hammer, etc. that gives them immense powers that they can use on a whim, but if I choose to legally buy a gun I should have to tell the government all about myself and register?

This weapons registration aspect is interesting. I can buy swords off Ebay and I don't have to register swords which can hurt/kill people, but I have to register guns which do the same thing. If I invent a lightsaber, would I have to register it? Current laws would say no.
I would say if you choose to use a suit of armor, ring, amulet, or magical item to power yourself, then you should have to register those items. But you don't have to register yourself. Anyone can use these items for destruction (with some exceptions of course). In reality, I think the government would confiscate these weapons for public safety and develop them for military uses. So registering these weapons would be a moot point.

The problem with Iron Man's side in this is he's allied himself with so many evil people it's hard to take him seriously. The Thunderbolts hunting down heroes, and he approves? Deadpool too? Come on.
Not to mention SHIELD. Brian Bendis(the architect of this whole thing) has spent the last two years making this current SHIELD administration out to be evil, corrupt, and brutal in the pages of New Avengers alone. They mind-raped Spider-man just a few issues ago. Hell, the SHIELD agents responsible for enforcing this law call themselves "Cape Killers,"* which is hardly an endorsement of their objectivity or rationality. When SHIELD told Cap about the law, they attacked him unprovoked, BEFORE the law was even enacted.
Whereas all the characters who are defined by their notions of honor and nobility joined Cap's side, or at least declined to join Iron Man's side(Namor, Black Panther, Cap, Luke Cage, Black Bolt, Dr Strange, Hercules, Nick Fury). Just not Thor, for now.
I don't see how Iron Man's side is going to come out of this as heroes.
*Plus that "cape killers" thing is stupid anyway. How many characters in the Marvel Universe wear capes? Thor, Sentry, Scarlet Witch, Ultron, Adam Warlock(not exactly in their jurisdiction), Dr Strange? Maybe one or two others. However the 3000 remaining heroes don't. Stupid Bendis.

Another way I see things is like this. With Spider-Man, he has always done his job for free. Now the government is making heroes register. So why not register (like any law abiding hero would do) AND get PAID for it. Peter has never been the billionaire like Stark or Bruce Wayne are. Besides Aunt May and Mary Jane have been attacked and kidnapped so many times even before Spider-Man's identity was known. In the movies alone MJ has been attack or kidnapped 3 times and 2 for Aunt May. There saftey isn't going to be changing that much.

At the end of the day, both sides are right and both sides are wrong.

SO........what if you were born with that power?
Hey Viking, the point was made to address my post specifically concerning those that were not born with a power, but that relied on some potentially deadly item that they chose to wield.
Those born with a power is a different issue and I guess I can see both sides of that. What I can't see is why someone would say it's unfair to make a hero who uses a gun register, but then say that ordinary citizens should have to register their guns (and BTW,don't own a gun and never will).
I also don't know that I understand what Duckgoo means by saying that a hero that used an item should register the item, but not themselves. So heroes should anonymously send in a form saying "hey, I've got a suit of armor that fires missiles, lasers and leaves me nearly invulnerable, see ya!!!" That doesn't help very much, while a law abiding citizen who wants a pistol for target practice needs to reveal their name, address, and what gun they bought to the gov't. Doesn't seem right. Of course the answer would be to stop gun registration altogether. Then I'd be on the side of the anti-registration forces. So as soon as Cap comes out against gun registration I'm joining him!

I said that if you had "a suit of armor that fires missiles, lasers and leaves me nearly invulnerable", then the government will take it from you and use it for military applications. Which leaves the issue of registration a moot point. The government would be crazy to let you keep such a thing, forget registration!!! They will probably put you in Area 51 and help them develop more weapons of mass destruction.

You're using real world hypotheticals to deal with a "real" comic world issue. We're dealing with a world where such suits exist and where the gov't only requires you to register, they're not taking Tony's suit away from him. As it's a comic world based on our own, unless we read otherwise, the basic laws of our land exist in this comic one.
But lets compare real to comic worlds. How is it democratic (a world you like to use), that someone (in the comic book world) with a lot of money can create a weapon, or build a suit and be free to use that weapon or suit as they see fit with no need to tell the gov't who they are, and what they have, someone who might apparently be using it for "good" but who could have a criminal record, while at the same time you seemingly believe that a law abiding people in the "real world" must register themselves with the goverment if they want a handgun? Why is it okay for someone in the comic book world, maybe someone with bi-polar disorder who has a history of not taking their medication, to stumble across a ring that gives them immense power, and play "hero" without having to register, but a stable, law abiding citizen should be required to register a handgun?
I don't follow the logic.

Just got that issue of Wizard in the mail today. Haven't read it all yet, but I did read the Mighty Avengers preview. For anyone who doesn't usually get Wizard, I'd deffinately recommend picking this issue up. Oh, and the Brian Bendis interview was interesting. (It might not be Tony behind the Iron Man suit in the Mighty Avengers)

Hey dudes, can anybody help me find a really detailed summary of the past issues? I can't find any really good synopses of the story so far--is there a place with all the details?

Go to www.uncannyxmen.net and then look under issue summaries in the issue information section. These guys do an actual summary, not a review. It really is a great site.

If not Tony in this suit, who? Maybe Tony Stark will be the Iron Man in the "New Avengers" on-going. The Mighty Avengers shoulda been Caps Avengers though. Let the New Avengers be Starks.
Also, read where Clint Barton(Hawkeye) was going to be a part of or maybe lead a new group after the fallout from Civil War. Someone said maybe the Champions or something to that matter.

If not Tony in this suit, who?
It wasn't a statement, and was most likely just to stir up the theories. Although I have to admit, after reading these civil war issues, I wouldn't mind seeing Tony Stark out of the suit. He's been gettin' way to annoying IMO.

Thanks Mith, that site helped a lot. All I gotta say is, I'm with Captain America 100%. I really hope the X-men join him soon; this whole thing is exactly what they are fighting against! I know they want to be neutral for now, but they can't forever if that dang Iron Man has his way. It treats superheroes like some want to treat mutants--dangerous freaks that need to be leashed up like animals and made to fetch slippers for bureaucrats and lobbyists. Captain is suddenly my favorite hero of all. I hope he pulls this together and becomes the icon of civic virtue he was meant to be!

Maybe Peter Parker will fully be Tony's puppet then. Whoever is in the suit, if not Tony, if Tony lives through all of this, they will probably truly be a puppet to Stark.
Cannot wait for number 4 to come out. Just read a review of Cable and Deadpool and found out who actually killed someone, but not who died.

Yup, just finished Cable and Deadpool #2, great read. This comic is just pure fun. But yeah, the death thing is in there like you said.
