In person it looks great right out of the box.... but, due to the molding process, I see where the gap is just a bit to wide... I can't get over how great this fig is man..nice work!

Yeah man, i have been looking forward to this guy for a while... I really hate to do this, but I may have a spare body laying around because I am working on articulating the mandibles and being able to put the mask on it:) I have a nifty idea for it... I am just trying to find netting close to accurate...

The movie net is 2 inch diamonds, that would mean he would need 1/2 inch diamond netting...now finding that should be easy...maybe..haha:thud:

I have also sanded down the seam on the bio (which was terrible on mine as you can tell) and am working on repainting the bio before re-gluing the bio together. I might try to figure out adding the LED's before putting the head back together though too.

Dude! What did you use for the lenses? they look great.

As for the LEDs...here is my method:

I took a tiny drill bit and drilled out the wholes inside the "lights" leaving the ring...when I say tiny bit, I mean tiny! And I used an old school hand/finger drill. Then I drilled out the spot behind the laser from the inside of the helmet...so one led to fit right behind there and bingo...and since you have to repaint yours anyways, it will be good to put a few extra coats around the led so no light bleeds threw.

Thanks!

I just used some cheap roll up sunglass material that goes behind prescription glasses that I got after my last eye exam. I cut the lenses to size from that and glued it in place over the painted lenses.

What did you use for the LED's/power/switch?

I'll have mine next Thursday but I've seen it in person at a store. It looks better than I was expecting. I was thinking about recasting the armor in pewter, polishing up the details, adding real leather parts, and making a bio mask to fit the closed mandibles version. I saw the disassembled parts but does the lower leg armor come off or is it cast together?

I finished repainting the bio after sanding the seam down. I think it looks ok for my first attempt.

It is a little darker and dirtier but I was having a hard time trying to get it to look close to the armor color. I still need to glue it and fit it to the head.

Thoughts?

@natrix- First off, great job on that repaint. But, you can really tell where you sanded that seam down because there are some pretty noticeable scratches. If I may offer a piece of advice: At Wal Mart, they sale these fingernail buffing squares. They're soft and have 4 different surfaces to gradually sand and finish the surface down to a smooth finish AFTER you've sanded something down with a coarser grain of emery board.

I was having the same problem myself with customs, and saw my wife had one of those and tried it out. It works great for getting rid of the rough surface after sanding it down. Personally, I never use sand paper on the surface of a figure I'm customizing. Nail care products only. Figure how nice a woman's nails look after they sand and paint them, that's what lead me to start using that stuff.

And also, when I strip the paint off a fig, I use nail polish remover for acrylic nails with cotton balls/Q-tips.

Natrix
05-28-2011, 09:45 AM
The scratches aren't from the sanding, I put them there when I was weathering the paint and applying the wash on purpose. If they were there from the sanding, the wash would fill them in as dark scratches not lighter. I used different grits of sandpaper to get rid of the seam and that area was smooth when I was done but the rest of the bio isn't that smooth.

Natrix

Thanks to everyone that likes the repaint. I see a lot of people saying that they don't have the ability or talent to do some mods or painting. I am here to tell you, if I can do it so can you. You just have to go for it. I am by no means a professional modder or painter but you will never learn until you try. Just read how people are doing things, take you time and ask questions if you need help.

newbs barking orders

Why not? All I said was how I want to get mine so I can post pics of it in here. If you're going to jump my case either PM me or jump everyone else whose post is not a direct pic of a mod, or comment about it. My comment was in no way an attempt to spam your thread.

l don't know what his problem is. he is new and acting like he owns the place. can't stand new members who come here and start barking orders and act they have been here for some time and know how everything works. even if they meant no harm. you didn't say anything that should of gotten that response

I don't think he was really trying to be a douche, he's knew..

well he should know any thread ends up having unrelated discussion. so l will tell him now it happens every time. so yeah he was being a douche.

Please don't take it the wrong way, I was just trying to keep this thread going with mods & related comments. I feel your fustration with not having it in hand. Hopefully, you'll have it soon and post your mods pics here.:wave

just so you know you are being very rude. you are new so l will tell you. every single thread ends up with unrelated discussion, end of story. most of your thread will be about mods and stuff, but there will be some other chitchat. so the next time a couple members post that don't have much to do about mods, don't act and respond the way you did. if you are the king of threads then you should know this thread is also in the wrong section. it don't it should be in the Alien And Robots section. it should be in the Custom creations section. if all you want is custom pics and discussion.

Anyway. l am planning on taking my masked pred completely apart. i'm still not happy with mine. l already did the mask mod. l am tired of waiting for a company to satisfy me with a perfect pred. you know the old saying. "you want ____ done right you got to do it your self.". l think l will take him apart repaint him and get some real neeting and see what l can pull off.

Great work on the repaint on the bio, Natrix! :) I wouldn't sweat the color difference from the helmet to the armor because they weren't the same color in the film either.

Having watched the film again this weekend your weathering isn't too heavy, in fact from shot to shot in the film his bio gets cleaner or dirtier so yours is spot on depending on the scene. :)

I have an idea for the lenses, rather than trying to cut the lenses out of sunglasses I was thinking of taking some clear document protectors, cut the shape of the eyes out and glue them right over the painted lenses that are already in the figure.

This will give the same glass look as the clear reflective document protectors are going over something that's already black so it'll give me a nice mirrored appearance.

I'll try it and post pics.

Blade3327
05-30-2011, 01:09 PM
it's never that simple.:lol:lecture

:lecture Most of this will probably turn out to be discussion, whether it's about a mod or not. Not everyone has received their Predator figures and not everyone will mod them on account of how difficult the netting is to deal with. Besides the visor gap fix, we won't be seeing much else, save for a few courageous customizers looking to do a full repaint and such (like encline_designs).
It's not like sprig's post is totally off-topic, as most threads like this also get comments about people's experiences with the figure, which can sometimes relate to modding. Be glad we're still talking about the 1/4 Predator and not the new HT Superman :lol.

@encline_designs: We HAVE to know what kind of netting that is. It's a little big, true, but it looks great! How durable is it?
I was also thinking that a good diamond size would be like that of the HT AVP Predator net suits, since those were a little bigger than the newer HT nets. The only problem is AVP parts are pricey and you'd probably need multiples for full coverage.

Be glad we're still talking about the 1/4 Predator and not the new HT Superman :lol.

agreed.:lecture. l thought l would tell the original poster the way things work. whether he likes it or not. because this will go onto just pred discussion and if no one tells him that's what happens, he will not know any better and get upset and have a heart attack.

I didn't cut out the painted lenses either. I just glued the sun glass film I had over the painted lenses and that worked out fine.

Ahh, I gotcha.

Too bad there isn't a way, at least that I can think of at the moment, to simulate the compound eye look that his lenses have in the film.

l think l have something that will work. my dad had a special tape that is mirrored. it is actually a type of metal tape that is flexable like regular tape. it is used for helicopter blades. if l cut that to shape and stick it over the lenses l will then have chrome/mirrored lenses. which would be movie accurate. l might go over to his place tonight and see of he has some left.

That's a cool idea, I was actually referring to the very small grid pattern that is present in his lenses in the film, similar to the eyes of a bee.

I can't think of anything, that would scale properly at least, to simulate that.

does anyone know how to make molds. l really want to get into doing that.

example. the soft rubber armour on this pred. you can easily remake the armour in hard resin. l just don't know what products to use. l saw some vides on youtube. you make a solution and use a paint brush and brush it on to the object you want a mold. which would be the soft armour. once it drise you peel it off and you have a rubber copy of the armour. then you poor in some resin into the rubber mold. the guy said it was Smooth Cast 300 resin. then once that drise you pull the rubber mold off and you then have a hard resin armour reproduction. that would be awesome. then you just paint it and find a way to attach it. it would be easy l just dont know where to find that stuff.

I have a bagged sample product called Knead-A-Mold that us kit builders use if a resin part breaks or we want to cast a duplicate of something real quick.

They are little 1/4 jars like in the picture below(those jars are a bit larger than the ones I have)....they are just samples but it's enough to cast something to try it out. The stuff works great.

Now if you want to get super high tech and play with the big boys, then I can point you in the right direction to someone who does great casting work and may help you out.

So if you want, shoot me a PM with your address and I will send you out a sample so you can try it. And then if you like it, you can order some...it's up too you.

Damn, he looks amazing with quills! Those leather straps are also very cool. I'd be happy with the way he looks at this point, since it's the most accurate he can get while still looking factory-fresh.

Badvermin
06-12-2011, 02:51 PM
The quills are made out of a single plastic flower I bought at Micheal's yesterday for $1.25. I tore the little flowers off so I could get at the leftover plastic parts. The plastic was curved and was in the exact sizes I wanted for the face (small) and the arms/chest (large).

I used a tealight to slowly soften the plastic and very carefully stretched them into quill shapes with tweezers. I then used a razor to cut them to the appropriate length.

It was a pain, but it was well worth the time, it's hard to describe how huge of a difference it makes in person. I highly recommend it. The quills look very natural, but they don't show up in the photo very well. For example there are 16 new quills sticking out of the chest, but they photograph like all the rest.

Loving some of the customs in here. Great stuff.

I have a couple of points you screen accurate freaks may want to know though.

First, Steve Wang said on Facebook that the knee and elbow straps on the Pred are not supposed to be brown or simulated leather. They are black. He himself cut black cloth and applied them to the movie suit.

Second, the mesh look in the below shot is not on the mask lenses. What you see is a reflection in the lenses of the mesh over the a photography light used to diffuse that light so it wasn't as harsh as the light coming from our left side of the screen, making it look more like ambiant light instead of direct light. In photography this is called a 'Fill' light and is used to fill in areas that would othewise be totally in shadow. What you see is a reflection of the meshed Fill light that is giving the left side of his mask that soft illumination. There is no mesh on the lenses at all.

So the knee straps are black, but are the elbow straps brown?
Also, any ideas what to use for the lenses on the bio and where to get it?

SilentSurfer

Knees and elbows are the same. If either looks brown, it may just be that they're muddy.

I personally would not replace the lenses. I would gloss black them, and then go over them lightly with with Alclad II Chrome to give it a black chrome look.

Gotcha. So are you going to be doing a repaint of this figure?
That is something I would love to see!
Quick noob question - Ive never tried using an airbrush or doing a full repaint before, but Im planning to learn how to do both at some point.
Id just like to know how you would go about painting the little "dots" on this predator. Would you use an air brush or paint brush?
Is an air brush even capable of such small details?
Thanks.

No, there isn't. What's REFLECTING this time is probably the blinds on the trailer window. When looking for 'mesh' in the lenses, consider the light source and refelctive property of the lenses.

A good airbrush and a careful hand could do those dots. If you're just starting out though, I'd do them with a small brush and thinned black paint. Make sure your brush tip has a bead of paint on it though, or your dots will look too jagged.

Yes, I will eventually be painting my own open mouth version, but probably not soon.

I kinda like the look of the mesh on the lenses, but I will probably go with just some sort of reflected lense. Anybody know if there is suppose to be some sort of bottom panel for the shoulder cannon support. It looks kinda empty on the bottom and I was thinking of making a full or partial enclosure for it.

Steve Wang also made changes to the Cinemaquette statue that he didn't like about the regular design (like the scarring from the battle damage on the mask), but I think the deal with the mesh in the lenses is that they're partially transparent so if light hits them, or what-not, then you can see through them somewhat and the mesh is on the inside of the lenses. Kinda like how you can sometimes partially see someones eyes through their sunglasses. Anyone who has a HT P2, look at the lenses on the mask through a light and you'll see what I mean. They're smooth on the outside, partially transparent and have a mesh design on the inside.

well this is a cluster F up on everyones part then. if it really is a reflection. all the collectables have the mesh which then is not accurate. all the preds in the AVP movies have the mesh on them, and all the pred 1 and other pred collectables, even the SS pred Maquette has the mesh. obviously everyone making the AVP movies thought the mesh was part of the lenses, copying it from Predator 1. not sure who to believe here, but the mesh on the camera reflecting makes sense. anyway who cares, good thing the mesh looks cool in the lenses.

then added real leather ,bones and fabric, all the armor and metal was done with silvers and clear yellow and coppers, i added some small detail parts under the cannon where it was dead and hollow.
i even fixed that thumb by heating and v cutting it into shape.
here are just a few shots

This is actually a plan of mine - Use my Dremell to smooth the area out, cut and weather the necessary leather pieces (loin cloth, belt, custom-made leather pouch) and glue everything in place. Also going to add leather straps to the torso armor, and may try to do removable sandals.

So what's your plan? If ya got a good one I'll steal it and give ya all the credit :D

Did you have to drill out the original plastic lens part before putting on the real lens?

NECA netting?
Naw, the netting that I think would work is pond netting. I found some that's 1/4" mesh. Problem is that I've only found it online and the minimum order is 6' x 14' at around $45-46. Encline has the best netting it's just that the squares are too large.

Hey, look, Jack the Ripper got a hold of this one :lol:lol:lol
Hey, I was gentle.:panic:

When I posted that pic I hoped people would use it to see how easy this figure is to take apart.
SOME HEADS UP:
*the neck is one piece and glued to the body.
*the chest is hollow. That white piece you see in the front is the glued piece at the waist. It was used to hold in the netting.
*To remove the legs and torso there are 3 screws: one you can see when you lift up the skirt. The other two are at the waist. The loin cloth is glued to the waist, just pull it off and you'll see the screws. From there the legs just fall off as does the waist.

PS: if pics are needed just lmk.

But how do you know it will be the correct size?
1/4 could mean anything, right?

I mean the size of the squares could still be any size.

No, 1/4" means that the square opening is 1/4" all around. At least in the way I've been going around and looking for this net. I'm specifically asking if the squares are 1/4". And I've been measuring.

The netting should be closer to 3/16", but that's been a far more difficult task in finding and making it look not so thick. The netting encline used looks like it's 3/8." The style looks fantastic, it's just that the square is too big.

And actually I'm learning more about nets then I'll ever need to know. Just say, "quarter inch mesh" and they'll know what you're talking about. I guess on the other side of the pond you could say, "10mm mesh." That might be slightly too large.

I'll definitely post it up once I order it and get it. I wouldn't want people ordering it and it doesn't work. They've sent me a better picturethen what they have on their site, but I'm not convinced it will work yet. Something about where the netting crosses doesn't look right.

let me get the picture and I'll show you....

Yeah, the area where they cross is thicker than I would like, too.
Great find though. I wonder how hard it would be to make string netting from scratch? There must be some kind of device that could be built to make things easy.:dunno
I'll probably do some research on it soon.

I used brown leather 1mm thick round lace. I cut all the plasic rope from out the skulls and painted where I had cut.
The rope actually goes through the skulls now.
Small detail but I think it looks more accurate and cleaner now.

Some small additions and accessories update for my Preds...

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d29/JohnWPics/P1070958.jpg
I plan to paint the green parts gloss black, trim off the tiny spiny parts and use them as quills, should be fun.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d29/JohnWPics/P1070957.jpg
One of the skulls I ordered from Ashkanis, I know he didn't wear the human skulls around himself like that in the film but I still think it looks cool.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d29/JohnWPics/P1070948.jpg
Another skull. You can't really pick it up in the pic but I shot the open and closed mouth Pred's heads with a gloss clear coat, it didn't look slimy enough from the box.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d29/JohnWPics/P1070941.jpg
Added some moss and more parts from one of my 12" McFarlane Pred bases, I also redid the blood and added more.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d29/JohnWPics/P1070942.jpg
The custom LED bio from Ashkanis, much better than the stock bio that came with the figure which I have placed...

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d29/JohnWPics/P1070950.jpg
There. :)

Closer shot of the augmented blood.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d29/JohnWPics/P1070951.jpg
Just a shot of the open mouth, no changes other than the clear coat.

I will take more pics when I've added the quills.
