View Full Version : DarkArtist's Creations of DOOM!

Obi Wan always was a wiser man than most. Even Yoda.
Hence Qui-Gon's quote, about such. And, I have always thought he has a twinkle in his eye, not just a good guy, but one who understood much moe than he showed.
He was always willing to sacrifice. Not all of them did to the extent he did. He even gave his life (literally, and figureatively) for Luke, ie., for Anakin.
I have some trouble thinking of Obi Wan as evil, as he understands it more than many others did. I think he was too in control of himself to go over.
But, as a Padawan, yeah, he got mad at Maul. No doubt about it. That's about the only place a changeover to the Dark side could have realistically happened.
Older Obi-wan as evil though? Nah! Just a fun exercise and nothing more.
Good luck with it Josh. I am sure it will look cool though, whichever one you do. :D

Make a sith Qui-Gon, a sith who disgiused himself as a jedi to find the chosen one. Knowing what thw prophency really meant. He took him to the jedi temple to get permistion to train him knowing the council would say no. So he sacrificed himself for Sidious and they got someone real evil looking to kill him, so the jedi believe Maul was the sith lord. Knowing how much Obi-wan respectred his master, qui-gon's last words were to train the boy knowing that Obi-wan would fail anakin. Count Dooku was a sith who trained Qui-gon aswell.
At the end of ROTS i was hoping that qui-gon would be reveiled to actually be a sith. The phantom menace.

Sorry Ian. You lost me there. Aint no way a Sith would ever sacrifice himself. That contradicts the very core of what it means to be Sith.
Sorry Josh. :lol

And thanks AH for the comments on the Kurgan, I had to give him some love. That one was always a favorite of mine. And Pix Ghost Anakin pics that Maulfan took were too amazing to not use. :rock

I'm guessing the conehead is Ki Adi Mundi, if so I'm curious to see how that comes out! Alo intrigued by this dark Obi-Wan. Kind of an opposite of the Light Vader from the ROTJ Infinties story. So that's a pretty neat concept.

Thanks Xander... and yes, the conehead is Ki Adi Mundi. As for Obi Wan, that Vader from Infinities was an inspiration to that in a way. I thought if they can do it that way, I can try this opposite direction. I've sculpted some straggling hair on his head to take away the neat and tidy appearance and am putting together his clothing bit by bit. Will start painting on it soon, so keep an eye out. :D

It really does!! It's immediately recognizable as soon as the paint goes on. Insane.

It helps having the hair off too, there's no good way to accomplish the style of hair many of the men had in LOTR, and the way Sideshow does it works nice I think, but at times I think it distorts the size/shape of the face, so when you take off Faramir's hair, it helps him look thinner too, which is key.
Captain Faramir
07-09-2007, 11:22 PM
I can't wait to see what you do with it Josh! One of the things that impresses me most about the sculpt is the hair. I was dreading how they would pull it off, but they did a beautiful job--I can't say enough good things about that sculpt. It's a lot better when it's lighter, too. Faramir was a redhead, not blond nor brunette. It's really key to his look that he have the fairer skin and lighter hair. I'm easgerly awaiting photos of what people do with this!

Interesting job DarkArtist...you certainly gave him an attitude...those eyes are great.
On your photos...are the overt orange tones to them intentional? It's interesting but I'm curious how your Boromir looks under more "natural" lighting...
He looks cool though...
DarkArtist81
07-11-2007, 08:24 PM
Thanks for the comments guys... Yeah, the lighting kept coming up like that... so I kept trying new backgrounds. But no matter what I did, they came up yellow toned. I will try and take some nicer pics tomorrow, hopefully some of them will come out ok. If anything, soon I will be buying a better lamp so that should help out a lot.
Also to answer your question Xander, nothing done to the clothing, just good old fashioned "futzing". I did darken the leather bits on the belts and such, just to make it look more lived in and less new. Boromir being as he is, there was no need to do any heavy weathering.... which was nice.
Anyway, I did redo a few things on my Aragorn tonight, so I thought I would share that with you guys. Also a pic of the damn near finished Luke..

Hmmm... you don't say? I seem to remember a post about this by some concerned board member... now who could it have been? :lol
Quick question are you using any tungsten correction for your pictures... some of the shots are a bit yellow which is usually due to lightbulbs. You can get rid of it by changing the setting on your camera (if it has it) or of course getting non-tungsten bulbs.

Just thought I'd share this...
Josh made it over safe and sound yesterday, he's crashed out in the guest room right now, so I feel I can sneak in and post this before our hanging out continues...(He's here for a couple of days...)
He brought a boatload of his work with him. About ten figures or so. Let me tell you guys....his stuff, seen in person, ROCKS! :rock
His Russian girl from the Challenge, WICKED! Absolutely cool! Much cooler in person than in photos, and she looked cool in photos! She has so much character.
His Aragorn and Boromir...AWESOME! His Aragorn's eyes!!!...man, the fellow has worked hard and really done a superb job of making this guy just utterly kick some! Awesome stuff to see in hand!
His painted Shocktrooper...WOW! Those Medi figures kick serious a$$ anyway, but to see and hold one, after only having had Hasbro guys, and then as a Shock, well, let me tell you, there's nice old cars, and there's Ferraris, and that is one smoking Ferrari of a figure! His paint is superb!
His Zombie with the head dangling, too crazy man! You need to see it in person with it's soft, squishy brains...:lol
There's other stuff, and I hope to get pics of them all and some combo shots with some of mine (His Russian with my Chicks!), so hang loose for more cool stuff soon.
But yeah, guys, Josh is rocking! He is doing some utterly amazing work. Proud to know him and be able to see his growth as an artist in person. :D

Thanks a lot guys.... I know a lot of the other guys can echo my feelings on this sculpt (Miller), it's fantastic to paint... practically paints itself! :lol
I watched the movie and the bit I wanted to capture was in the beginning right after the Normandy landing. He was so filthy, but the thing I damn near forgot was that the top of his forehead was almost clean because of the helmet. He had this line on his forehead, so I included it. It's silly, but it's just that little touch that makes it all the more fun for me. :D
And Arnold, I have been wanting to paint that one for a loooong time. So it was a no brainer that I would attack it headfirst and go straight for the gore. I still have a touch or two to do, hair and a bit on the cheek cut to dim it down a bit. Got a lot of reference even though it was only in the film for a minute or so...

Thanks man.... Yeah, I can't wait to see what you do with Miller. It's one Hell of a fun sculpt to paint! :rock
And Terminator is about 80% done, going to do just a tad of an update to the less damaged side of the face. Add some light bruising and stuff. But the other side is pretty much finished. Used a lot of reference of both the arnold makeup and the animatronic head. I did bloody it up just a tad more, but I like doing that. :lol

Thanks a lot Wor-Gar! It means a lot man, really put a lot of effort into Miller. I wanted the cuts to look really painful and not really clean. It's a little more pronounced on my paint than in the film... but I like it. And now I am all set and ready for the parts to arrive next week so I can mount this sucker! I agree with Les, Josh, there's something eerily unsettling about seeing Obi-Wan so Dark Side after coming to love him for the honor and heroism he demonstrated on screen, but as Les said, that does make it all the more interesting a piece, and as far as execution, I think your approach is the best way to convert Old Ben to evil. Look forward to seeing more.

Glad you like it bro! I was painting the Obi and Batman Begins was on TV so I used that reference and did the hair base and the beard bits. It was serendipitous! WOW! Let me be the first to congratulate you Josh!
15 years ago, it took me nearly two years and tons of gathering and experimentation to do what you just did in what, a month or less! WOW!
How gathering times have changed for customizers!
How does it feel? To have an Indy? Great, no?
He looks super! Enjoy him dude! He rocks! :rock

that indy is awesome!!!! the amount of detail in there is unbelievable. fabulous work man! one thing - where the head neck meets the body... there is a gap there. not much can be done there eh? unless you give him a necklace or something (which he didn't wear)
outside of that (which is out of your control), the thing is PERFECT!!

That's just awesome, and it's amazing how much removing that gigantic zipper does to improve the appearance of the Relic Hunter jacket.

Again, to go from nothing to something so fast...from zero to sixty in one second.... is amazing! Next time you come over, BRING HIM! I want to get a good look at him and a shot next to mine! He is awesome! Love him, especially after the zipper removal. That is indeed absolute!
Quick minor accurizing thing, move the over the shoulder belt strap buckle to just about centered over the open shirt seam area. And, either paint those shirt snaps the same color as your shirt, or...if you are keeping his shirt open, remove them altogether. That will cinch it! And that's it!
Great job Josh! Just superb! KUDOS my man! :clap

Cool man... It's just been killing me lately. I thankfully have become a little faster at this, but still the backlog is getting to be pretty ridiculous. I am hoping to move at least half of it this week, but you never know...
I know that there are a lot of people waiting on stuff and I swear it is coming, should be big updates in the next few days. I got a lot of it done last night, McClain was just the tip of the iceberg. Skin work is tough stuff, usually takes at least 3 to 4 coats to get it the way I want it. Once that is done it is a cakewalk, but the skin is what holds me up. :lol

Thanks, Josh. It means a lot that you like it. Sorry to post on your personal thread but Les was "calling" me out. And thanks to everyone else who liked my Hans Gruber. It's the only one around that I know of. Maybe in all the world :)
OK, RECIPE quickly:
Headsculpt was a private OOAK commission. Suit is from the ToyPresident's Harry S. Truman. I did some alterations to slim it down a bit in the waist, sleeves and legs, ironed the lapels to bring the neckline low (80's style) and removed/resewed the buttons appropriately. Custom french blue shirt and maroon tie from ProjectARE. Walkie made from an BBI LAPD set (which I painted to exacting specifications), and the H&K P-7 is from Cy Girls accessories and was painted silver where needed.
A pretty simple figure once you have the parts. The walkie was perhaps the most detailed thing to do. Here's a compare between movie walkie and my little-tiny 1/6 walkie:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j306/Wor-Gar/walkiecompare-movieto1-6.jpg
My eyes hurt remembering trying to paint the little details every time I see this picture. :)

That's a good one... No, you guys have a right to be interested and want to know what is happening with the stuff you guys have sent me. It's totally understandable.
This week has been a bad one for painting stuff, my tire went flat and my account went about $350 negative because of a error on my part. I had to cancel my Rambo III and Asajj figures due to lack of funds.... So really haven't been as on the ball as I would like this week.
Tonight we should see some updates, and I hopefully should be mailing out some stuff to you guys this next Friday when I get paid...

Josh, sorry about the troubles you've run into, hopefully Asajj and John will find their way back to your collection at a later date. As for your work, I noticed in some of your collection images you added recently that Dark Obi-Wan was on a shelf, has he been completed or is it just their as you work on it? Very curious to see the final results on that piece, that's deffinately a fully artistic piece for you, I'm not fully up and up with EU Star Wars, but as far as I know, there is zero reference for what Obi-Wan gone evil is like, so curious to see what the first interpretation of that comes out like. Keep on rockin' dude, great stuff!!!

Thanks MaulFan.... I hope things get better too. And no word on Obi yet, he's actually just been "warming" my shelf. :lol
And I really appreciate the words about the piece. Most of the response has been shock, seeing as though Obi is one of the most respectable and honorable Jedi. But I got the idea a while back when I read an interview with Timothy Zahn about the writing of Heir to the Empire. He said that his initial idea was to make the Jorrus C'baoth character a Clone of Obi-Wan, only twisted and evil. My reaction to that image was pretty graphic in my mind, the possibility of a truly Evil version of Obi-Wan.
I forgot that idea for a few years until recently I was growing out my facial hair and thought I looked like Evil Obi. I then realized that it had to be made. So I gathered the parts, sculpted some strands of hair falling down on his head and started planning his new Evil look. I hope to maybe do a few more steps on it tonight or tomorrow... so keep an eye out. Just been so far behind and hadn't wanted to work on more of my stuff than other people's. But he is coming along slowly when I have the paint and don't want to waste it. :D

um don't worry josh.. things will get better.. always look on the brightside.. one thing I noticed from life is that things always get better.. no matter how bad they seem.. aslong as you have a good attitude about it..

GREAT job! And clever too. Makes me wonder, when is this in the saga timeline? If it were that is....between Eps III & IV?

Thanks Les.... Yeah, I would think it would be between III and IV. What if Obi would have fell into rage and despair at the death of the Order, perhaps if Yoda would have died as well. Losing himself to the darkness, he slaughters Anakin and Palpatine tries to take him under his wing but Obi flees the scene... He spends years trying to amass enough power to defeat Palpatine and end the evil, but sacrifices himself in the process. Hence the sadness in his eyes. :D

Totally with Les on this one Josh. It feels so wrong seeing my beloved Obi-Wan going wayward, but if it had to be done, I don't think you could beat this interpretation. Great work man! Interesting thing, his beard coloration reminds me of the Ducard from Batman you were working on, which ties back to Obi-Wan's master Qui-Gon, perhaps this is the trend for good Jedi gone bad.
If you were to find a point in Star Wars timeline for this to occurr, I could see it as an alternate path from when Mace and Yoda start to doubt Anakin, and Obi-Wan just giving them a bick "**** YOU!" with his lightsaber and totally turning out of anger for the pressure laid on him with Anakin.
"I did my best! I did my best! I did my ****in' best!" (points to anyone that can name where that quote comes from)

Thanks guys!! Obi was really a lot of fun, a nice break from the non stop "precision" repaints of characters. A chance to let loose and do whatever my mind wanted to do. It was a really great experience, probably the closest I will ever be to "playing around in Uncle George's sandbox". :lol
Here are some pics of my (finally) finished 84 Reese. It still needs for the pants to be fully worked up, but my printer is out of ink and that makes reference kinda a problem. Will try to get better pics tomorrow as the ones I took didn't really work out. I guess I will have to put the whole setup together with my lightbox and everything. Take pics of Obi and Reese. Good news for those waiting on Reese headpaints, I am almost done with all of them... Mine was the proto, hammer out all the details... So at least you guys will have a more refined product than my own.

Wicked take on Obi-wan, who would have thought he could look so evil. the Beard, nails and red obi lightsaber are quality. What could his sith name be?
Top notch Reese and Jack, always great look through your thread and find lots of new customs.

Wow Josh he looks better than the proto (of course)! :clap :rock :clap
as for Darth Austerus... I figure Obi was always known as a rigid stickler to rules.. I figured as a Sith he would be no different (which is quite a scary thought). Austerus is latin for rigid. One who adheres to the letter of the law.

Thanks man! It is well on the way, will be even better when finished...:rock
And NICE idea for Obi. I think I will use that name if it is ok with you... Really works. And totally in character with Obi-Wan. And as you said, pretty terrifying when you think of it. Obi sticking very carefully to Sith doctrines and techniques. I am sure he would pore over old Holycrons and soak up the knowledge of the Ancient Sith. He might have been even more impressive a Sith than Palpatine given the chance. Pretty scary stuff. :monkey1

I think that we should certainly stop asking for updates. Even in a 'joking' manner.
Josh has A LOT of work on his plate at the moment and has a majorly cool work ethic BUT...the dude is a newlywed and holding down a job and needs to have some time for a life not just painting heads.
Josh has got about 6 or 7 heads of mine and I know he'll get round to them eventually, I also know he'll do a top notch job when he does.
Like many of you I anxiously await updates just to see how cool my stuff is looking but the reality of the situation is that he's working as hard as he can. Would you want Josh to not do as bang up a job on your head through rushing? No, I thought not...
What I think may be cool, if Josh is willing to do it, and so that people can see just how much work he's got on, post a list of how much work he's got to do. You've also got to figure that each head takes hours to complete. It's not a quick job.
Just of my stuff Josh has got :-
Anakin Clone Wars
Ki Adi Mundi
Tinister Craig Sculpt
TPM Obi
Pulp Fiction Bruce Willis
True Romance Christian Slater
??????????????????? (Let those who know, know...)
So let's all just kick back and wait for the updates. The dude is an artist and you can't rush art!

You may be right. Experience has taught me to expect, at least, a month turn around on commissions from Josh. Sometimes it feels like you are sending these jobs into a black hole and after a while you get a little anxious.
Regarding rushing art, I wish someone would tell my professors to stop rushing my music composition. :p
