Thank you... everyone!!

He's one of my faves on the shelf now and I'm glad you guys like him. Easy to paint too, very quick and painless!

And thanks Mike... I hope you do!! :rock (and keep a look out for pics in your PM box this weekend... :winkpumpk)

Whoo-hoo! I've been eagerly awaiting this one, conceptually it looked great in my mind's eye but the execution I was anxious about. I'm definitely glad I left it in your hands. As for the Yoda, I might just do that although looking at my collection the sudden urge to just box it all up and send on down is overwhelming...:lol

Dang it Josh, your work just amazes me. I love Yoda's fingernails. If I still had my Dead figures, I would surely be sending them to you man. Absolutely phenomonous!!! (Yes, phenomonous). :rock

DarkArtist81
02-06-2007, 04:07 AM
Wow, thanks guys!! :rock2

Yeah, Pix... the nails were tough to do... I didn't want them to look painted on yellow like the factory had done it so I painted them green and sent over that with several layers of watered down yellowish green until it had a look of something almost transparent but still thick. It was tough... but fun.

I also used this technique on another project that will be revealed in time... worked to great effect!

Thanks RW! Means a lot coming from a fellow artist. This one took me a while. The sculpt is so smooth it's hard to find something in the face to give it depth and not just one solid skin color.

Thanks guys!! It really does make me feel good to hear that from you guys... Really does. This repaint was hard as Hell to get to where I liked it. Looked at Routh forever to get the eyebrows right. And I might still have to retouch the eyes... I need a new brush though..

Most of the pictures didn't work out? What are you, Ansel Adams all of a sudden?

Josh, this is an amazing transformation. I see two things worth shouting about. One is the depth in the skin tone, which you've commented about.

The other is the placement of the irises. You've made some small adjustment, mostly I think in his right eye, that brings the likeness home. It's Routh. Wow.

Since you see something yet to retouch with a new brush -- tell us. What more do you plan to do?

Wow.... Thanks Gruff.... I think I just start to doubt myself when I see extreme closeups of my work... mostly when cropping these photos. The perfectionist in me wants to just fix every single thing until it's absolutely perfect in my mind.... The only problem is that it's impossible. Artists are always more critical of their own work, I guess... :lol

I really do appreciate the comments though. Les taught me a bunch of fantastic methods that I applied to this repaint and the eyes were the most tricky. Everything else was finished and taken care of... and the eyes took me the better half of an hour to finish. I just sat there and stared at pics of Routh until I thought I had it and left it alone.

I set them looking just a hair to the left... That coupled with the eyebrow placement really set off the likeness IMO and made this repaint work. I'm just thankful now that it's done and on the shelf... And thanks mainly in part to you, Gruff. Thanks again for helping me there....

DarkArtist81
02-17-2007, 05:00 PM
Well, it's time I let everyone in on this months biggest failure... my only one since Qui-Gon Ginn... and ironically from the same film. Darth Maul.

I thought I could really do the body tats and be ok... boy was I ever wrong. The body is all black and my mind can't seem to paint in reverse, so I attempted to paint the body all red and do the black design over the top of that. Well, in theory it worked fine... but there were complications anyhow.

I clearcoated the hell out of the body after painting and yet still it scratches and ruins my work. I tried to just be careful and still... scratches everywhere... So I decided to just touch up the face, add a little depth here and there and redo the eyes.... The body is just too much trouble to have to deal with and I don't think the reward will be all that spectacular anyway. At least not enough to go crazy over.... :banghead

I took a few pics moments ago... my "pre-show" pics as I like to call them... not very focused and very very dark... but I hate waiting...:lol

I know it's humbling, Josh, but I'm sure you learned a lot of great things in the attempt. In any case, your work on Maul's face is great! Thanks guys.... Yeah, this one was the toughest challenge I have yet faced.... And maybe if I can get a really nice bocy down the line I might attempt a retackle at this. I am happy with the face, even though I could not do the "looking up through the lids" on him... I tried... but this was the most menacing I could make him. Still looks like the most Placid and happy Maul I have ever seen... :lol

Josh, if I may be so bold to present a possible choice for Maul. I had mentioned in my customs thread that I had done up Metamorpho in a rather unorthodox manner. This may work for Maul as well but you would need to switch the body out for a Caucasion body. Then, using Sharpie color markers repaint the entire tattoo scheme. I'm sure it would be tougher than what I did but he doesn't scratch or scrape all that easily and I'm sure if clearcoted it would be even tougher. Just a thought my friend.
This is Metamorpho, everything but the head is Sharpie'd

That's a great idea!

I think it might be difficult to match the blacks and reds exactly to the head doing it this way, but it's still an interesting idea. I suppose it'd also be good to use sharpies for "touch-ups" on the scratched paint. Maybe you could show us how it turned out, even if it is a bit scratched up?

By the way, where's your Leggy? I'm eager to see what you did!!

Wow, thanks Les, Mark, Mikey... I very much appreciate that... on both Maul and Supes fronts.

As for Maul, I'd show the body, but I already scraped away nearly 85% of the paint in frustration, just to have it out of my sight and clean up the figure. Most of it came off very easily....

As for Legolas... he is coming... I've just been moving and haven't had time for much of anything. But I assure you he is on the way, my next personal project.... After that... Jabba.

Thanks man! Yeah, this one was really tough... But thanks to his body being skin tone and everything, it wasn't too hard to match the skin and face. If you get scratches, which I did.... they are hardly noticeable.

If only SSC had made a Red body. :monkey2

Maybe I could buy a Hellboy and steal his Body???? :monkey1

well i always thought about just straight spray painting a body red, then cutting mauls tats into paper and alligning them on the body and using it as a easy guide. i still might take on the project. but i have to say your work is inspiring.

Thanks guys!!! Really glad to see that you all like him... But again a lot of the credit is due to Jedi Mike and his never ending array of creative ideas. When he came to me with this one I was scared and intrigued... This kind of project pushes you forward as an artist, and I was glad to take it on.

I started out painting the body a base color and then sealing that several times. I then drew the tats on with pencil from the reference shots I had.. (which switched depending on how close he was to the camera...:lol

I then carefully painted the blue onto those areas and later came back with a lighter flesh tone to add some depth and fix a few lines that weren't quite straight enough. After that it was another few coats of seal and that's that.

And it would be nice to do a blown up arm... Didn't have an extra robot arm to use... :lol

That my friend is the Hot Toys Stoner head. Comes regular and sometimes deep camoflauge paint scheme. Easy to miss, but works great since it not only IS Biehn, it has the right hair that is easy to fit in HT USCM helmets, but it is HT, so it has the neck mount already attached, ready to go.
Makes one wonder why they went with that bushy haired Reese head for the Hicks figures when they had this....

Thanks guys! Yeah, I intended on the arm hair thing... but mostly because Les gave me the idea. Michael Biehn has some hairy arms! :D

I mixed up some light brown paint and got a thin brush... wiped most of the paint from the brush and lightly hit the arms where I wanted the hair to be. I then drybrushed the same color in any bare spots and that was it... instant hairy arm!

And for those wondering... that tattoo is screen accurate. Hicks SSN and everything. :lol

Not really sure that I get it...only use light brown?? But it looks like there are some very fine black hair lines.

Well, actually... you are right... I mixed the paint more in the middle of the blob than in the rest of the spots... so you get a few shades of brown all in one puddle...:lol

That way it comes out more random and in a way... more realistic. I do the same with hair on the head from time to time... let's you have more fun with it and give yourself up to those interesting variables that come with the technique.

I see you did a DarkArtist on your Hicks BDU's. What did you do specifically? Do some watered down paint on the attire, in place, or did you do all that before putting him together?
And combined with the armor weathering, he looks SO MUCH better!

Amazing difference. All I see now, on mine, is the unfinishment....he needs some DarkArtist treatment! SOON! :D

Thanks guys!!

To answer your question Les, I did paint the clothing to make it look a little more worn and in use. I used to wear BDU's on the boat in the Navy and my pants got very dirty even after one day of use. And funny enough, only in the spots not covered by my tool pouch or camel back. :lol

So for Hicks I took the same approach. I didn't soak the entire outfit, but did the same wash over the entire set of armor and on the exposed clothing. That way, under the armor you have "clean spots"... where dirt would never get through. It just looks more realistic to me that way.

And Ill.... no extra charge. ;)

Wow....thanks guys....

Seriously I just try my best to make it look realistic. And having been in the military I know our combat used equipment looks like Hell. It looks like it's been tossed around and used as oil rags... just harsh. It never looks pristine. So I wanted to bring that to life on my Marines. The armor, clothes, even the weapons.... all weathered to Hell and back.

That would be my custom Tom Hanks/Captain Miller from "Saving Private Ryan". And the Wolvie head is mine, too (as are about 5-6 others). :lol

So, I guess I'm the lucky dog. :monkey5

Damn straight I can make it look like that!! Evil as Hell!! :rock

All the projects are coming along wonderfully. the Hicks figures and armor are probably the best I've done for sure. The IrishJedi heads are gonna be stunning, I know it.... And Sith Anakin is gonna rock the house. :duff

Is that my Ash up there too? Second from the left above the Arnie head.

as always can't wait to see what comes next Josh :) (and thanks for the comment on my blog, if I didn't already say so)

Yes I sure did Hunky!! Thank you for doing such amazing stuff with Legolas and co. You have got me officially holding off on my repaint until I can get my grubby hands on one. :lol

Josh, are you at long last working off of a REAL table????
FINALLY!
Good for you. YOu got good lighting there too???
I see the Bond cup is still holding forth...

Finally my own table! :rock I have decent lighting, better than I did before... But I still need a lamp of my very own. And the Bond cup is my new brush holder, hoping some of that "Les-tastic" artistic luck rubs off on me. :D

Oh yeah! Tom Hanks is gonna rule, looks better and better with each new coat of paint. Can't wait to finish these out and ship em to you, give you something really cool to smile about. Won't be long now.

Ash is in the crowd too, looking for deadites.... I can't wait to have another crack at him... Haven't painted one since my early days.

I still want you to do my Ripley and I picked up an X3 Wolvie I'd like you to do as well. I'll let you finish with Hicks before we get to those though. Keep up the good work!! :rock

Ooooooo... I have and idea (and an extra Anakin head to work it on :D).

How about an evil Anakin mimicking the great pain job on the Unleashed ROTS Anakin. I have always thought that is really one of the great head sculpts and paintjobs. (yes, I am serious). :o

can't wait to see the clone

:rock:rock:rock:rock

Work should start on him soon too... still planning and gathering. Probably will watch the film again too, for some reason watching the movie helps me "get" the character a little better... the colors, the attitude...etc. Even though it is only a clone... still... I want this thing to be just right.

And Pix... whatever you want bro.. you know I am always there...:lol

Well, you do whatever you gotta do and take the time you feel it needs. I can't wait to see the work cause I know it's in some great hands. I appreciate you doing this of course :)

Rock on guys!! Thanks Josh, I'm just glad to get a chance to do the Clone. I don't get many opportunities to paint those..:lol

And Pix...I see what you mean... Anakin with ash streaking down his face and some cool bruises?? That would be pretty sweet... I love doing battle damage stuff. :rock

Exactly!!! Ghost Anakin should be here tomorrow. Once he is here I will put this other head (thank you cocoboloboy) in that package and send it back to you.
