Very nice Mikey!!! Good to see Jack too, seriously one of the best I ever did. :D

Cool to see him in a good home.

Very cool mikey... and Josh, that Jack of yours is simply phenomenal brother, seriously amazing work... I think it may be the best work you've done (yet), it is a masterwork up there with any EVER done and I mean that, it's beautiful.

... I also met JD a few weeks ago at a photoshoot at my cousin's studio here in Hollywood, VERY nice guy...

Wow guys... Seriously I appreciate every word. That Jack was a labor of love, I was very sad to see it go. maybe one day I can do another one, as I now know techniques that could make it even better.

The clothing was the most fun, as I just love weathering. :D

Well, it was seriously so complex I can hardly remember...

I do remember that I soaked the shirt and sash in a coffee cup full of watered down brown paint, very watered down, almost like dark tea. I then wringed them out and layed them out to dry. The pants I soaked in regular water, as well as the vest. I took all of the belts and "leather" parts and drybrushed them with varying shades of brown to get a more realistic look, and did the same to the boots. I did a lighter mix of brown for this, to show up and make it look a bit more dirty.

The face I did like always, just did the fleshtone, painted the eyes and facial hair. I did a few layers on the hair, dark brown as the base and lighter brown on top to give it more depth. I then drybrushed a little off-white on the headband to get that "out in the sun" faded look....

And voila... instant Jack! :lol

Not a problem.... Model Master Acrylic, Warm Skin Tone and Light Skin Tone. Use varying shades of those two, ending with a mixture of them both... Works wonders....

Nice Jedi Mike. I saw that you had posted these pics at RS and wondered if that was a Josh paintjob (way to go Josh!). I was wondering though, why did you decide to go with the Kenner robe? Have you tried the Sideshow Obi-Wan robes?

figuremaster_les
12-06-2006, 09:09 AM
Actually Jedi Mike, I am with you on using the Hasbro ObiWan robes for this figure!
I have my own custom Ep IV Obi Wan, and that Hasbro robe has that all-important old Obi-Wan pointy hood, and it looks great too, so I can see why you would use it. All the SS hood tops droop some, like the movies they are from of course, but in Ep IV, and I would think a 3.5, I think the point is totally appropo. Looks super!

That's my two cents at any rate.

Great paint Josh. But, you know that! :D

...that Hasbro robe has that all-important old Obi-Wan pointy hood, and it looks great too, so I can see why you would use it.....

Yeah thats what I figured. I guess since Anakin's force ghost was a strictly hood down kinda guy it would be OK for my force-ghost Anakin kit bash to be posed with his Sideshow hood instead of the Masterpiece Anakin robe.

Again DA that really is an awesome headsculpt and kudos to Jedi Mike for coming up with such a creative kit-bash alternative. :duff

The Mike
12-06-2006, 09:25 AM
Thanks everyone but DA is really the one who gets the kudos here, the paintjob is amazing, its greatness doesn't even come off in photos. I can't wait to begin our next project together. As for the hood, the only thing about the Hasbro hood I didn't like is that its too light, ANH Obi should have a darker robe but I did like the point and the SSC hoods can do that but in all reality the point is amazingly large...I decided to stick with this one and I absolutely love it. ROTS Obi is boxed up right now because I'm in the middle of a move but I'll take it out this weekend and post side by sides. Oh and Josh, please PM me your info again so we can get the next one up and running. :rock

That costume is actually not too bad - I did a body swap on the weekend throwing the whole thing on a sideshow body - even without a repaint the hasbro obi-wan ep 1 head and costume look pretty good. I used the Obi Ep 2 or 3 hasbro boots instead though - they look pretty similar to the boots on the SSC PF Ep 1 Obi-Wan. when I get some time I'll improve the paint on the headsculpt but its a fairly easy custom :)

Also wanted to express my joy at the coming Maul figure.... And post a few pictures of what I plan to do to him!!! He will be getting the full body tattoo treatment, minus the hands... as he is wearing gloves... But it is going to look fantastic... trust me. I cannot wait to do it. :D

Thanks TF.... My Mother was an artist herself and if not for her guidance I probably would have never become the man I am today, especially where art is concerned.

Thanks again.... And I can't wait to paint Maul. Though I'll probably leave his head as is... except for the eyes... :D

That second to last pic shows Maul with gloves on so the lack of bare hands isn't that much of a problem now huh? I guess you could always paint some of the extra Jedi hands though. Can't wait to see the results!

And BM... Thanks for the idea.... It can work either way, but I think I have the extra hands to do it.. I really don't swap hands all that much... So I have lots of options... :D

Well, first BM.... No, Mace isn't that short... His knees were bent a little underneath that cloak, so he looks shorter than he truly is.

One thing Josh, you so need to pick up sack head Jason. Though he doesn't really fit in with his hokey mask counterparts, its a great figure and the sculpt by Dooley is fantastic. Plus its the firt time we were introduced to Jason on screen.

DarkArtist81
12-09-2006, 11:04 PM
Thanks guys! Yeah, the look for QG in my mind was specific... A very calm look of a Jedi Master facing things head on and living in the moment. This time I think I captured that feeling... much better than my first attempt.

And I totally agree Chase! I NEED that SackHead Jason, he is sorely missed from my Jason line-up. One day when I have the money I will get him... But sadly I never have the cash when I think about it.

Thanks guys!! I am really excited about working on it. And cool that you met Hugh, Mikey! He's always been such a nice guy and one of the best people to meet if you are a fan. I've never heard a bad word about him, and that's rare with actors of his talent and stardom.

Yeah, I'm pretty limited on the Medicom's as well... if this one weren't so cheap I probably wouldn't have gotten it. But for just about 10 bucks more than an Aragorn... no big deal. As for Jack, I plan on one day getting myself another one. As that section of my shelf looks lonely for not having him... :lol

And thanks Chase... I hope it turns out good... Medicom's are a pain to paint for some odd reason... :D

I have to apologize to Josh.
I have been remiss in posting some heads that he reworked for me.
I had planned to get them posted as soon as I got them back, but... well my wife accepted the package and didn't tell me it arrived for a few days. At that point I had already packed up most of my parts and bodies to make a little more room for the Holidays. Then her computer got a virus that has virtually destroyed it and I can't find the batteries to my camera. But I have started reassembling some and hope to get pix of these great pieces posted this week.

Yeah, that is a killer... I mean... I'm sure we could always try and group them together and without big boxes... But it would get pretty expensive. I'd be down though... Not too big a deal, as long as it's not $100 to ship a small box... :lol

Thanks Paul. These past few months have been a time of severe growth in my art. Thanks mainly in part to Les and all of his help. It's due to him and the talks we have had that I have been able to do these past few works... I'm grateful to have him as a friend and a mentor.

To see your abilities come so far, so fast....I can't take that kind of credit, you are the one doing the doing. Give yourself a pat on the back for just having the raw talent to be able to learn so much so fast.
I've had 40 years. You've been doing this for what, a year? Two? And now, THIS!
You are one super artist yourself and you show it.

Wow guys.... you guys are great... :o

I sometimes cannot believe it's only been a year since I picked up the brushes and started painting. Mikey's work got me started and his tips got me rolling and trying new things. And I did a lot of trial and error, doing my best to put out decent product. And somehow, over time... with the help of my fellow artists... It's really come together. I'm just so happy that I've come to this point. Thanks to everyone, my customers most of all... Les and Mikey... And especially Abstract for giving the chance to work on another Sith Anakin.

Takes a brave man to send his collectibles off to be burned! :lol

Here's hoping the next year will be as spectacular as the first!! :duff

Oh yeah, it's the most draining thing I have ever tried to tackle. Originally I was tipped off to try and paint the red on the figure over the black, but my mind can't wrap around it. So now I painted the entire body red and will do the black on top of that.... hopefully it's easier.

One thing is for certain, it's a ***** to paint. But I will stay vigilant and see what I can accomplish. :D

rabidwolverine21
01-01-2007, 04:53 PM
I did the red body over black also, the advice i have for you is, i was testing the use of a sharpe, it works real well to outline the tatoos, then you can paint over it and it looks real good, the problem i had with mine was my primer clogged and crusted up on the body, about that time i realy realy was frustrated so i broke it, luckily someone was able to save me by offering me his body after he replaced it.

Sorry to hear about the frustrations though... I've certainly been there.. Never tossed a figure... but I've been pretty pissed off, that's for sure. My first Anakin repaint comes to mind. I did about 7 layers of paint on the face trying to get the right skin tone... It was pure Hell. :monkey4

Meeting of Minds...

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k203/DarkArtist81/LesAndI1.jpg

In the shot above, in our last minutes before I left... we made sure and represented as many people as we could... Shai in the background, Les and I, AbstractHarmony's Sith Anakin, Bannister's Dracula kit and my gift to Les... Jason 6.

But to fully explain the visit, I would have to start from the beginning.... I drove out to the Figuremaster Lair from FL and arrived in his hometown around lunch, got lost... was redirected and had a fun time attempting to park in front of his house....

Once I arrived, we shook hands and enjoyed the moment... having actually met for the first time. (always shocking to meet the people behind the avatars)

I came inside and was introduced to his folks and learned that his mother made insanely good cornbread... We exchanged our loot and I showed him my work for the first time... Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Wolverine, Maul and the Wolf kit. We took a breather for a moment and I prepared to enter the most insanely awesome room, filled with more custom magic than I could possible have been expecting....

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k203/DarkArtist81/Batman1939.jpg

I saw it all... The amazing 1939 Batman set... which I have to say looks even more fantastic and inspiring than in pictures, especially that Joker. It's really a magnificent piece... so much that my eyes were just drawn to that psychotic gaze.

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k203/DarkArtist81/Aliens1.jpg

The Aliens section drew me in instantly as well.... To see that magnificent Hicks, Ripley and Vasquez in person was really worth the trip in and of itself. Again, even more jaw-droppingly spectacular when you hold it in your hands.

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k203/DarkArtist81/AlienVsPredator1.jpg

The actual Aliens themselves were so kickass as well, just the subtle work done on every inch of them... magnificent.

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k203/DarkArtist81/Vaderandhimself1.jpg

His Star Wars area was even more shocking... standing my Anakin next to his was amazing to me and taught me a lot without Les even having to say a word. Luke and those spot on eyes, his custom Darth Vaders, Obi-Wan's and so many more that I cannot even begin to go into....

PART 2

After I was done gawking and drooling all over myself, we took a short trip to Wal-Mart for supplies... where I rode alongside Les in the LES-Mobile.... :rotfl

We dug through box after box and folder after folder before finally becoming exausted and just sitting down to talk for a bit. Which for Les and I, becomes a few hours...:lol

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k203/DarkArtist81/GoodLord1.jpg

We watched some of his old videos he did during his younger days and at last... at 4 am.... I went and crashed in the guest bed....

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k203/DarkArtist81/MeandtheWorm2.jpg

The next morning we talked shop for a bit and he gave me a few pointers on stuff I hadn't known... And I prepared to leave.... It was sad to go after spending just that one day, and I know that I still did not see everything that could be seen or said everything that could have been said... But I left with a feeling of artistic growth and overflowing with inspiration.

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k203/DarkArtist81/JT005a.jpg

Les is a great friend and I am honored to have been able to spend time with him and his parents for that one day, It's not everyday that painters get together and share their love for this hobby we so lovingly go after, nor talk about the very livelyhood that puts food on our tables and toys on our shelves. It was great to have that chance, hang out with a mentor and a friend of mine....

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k203/DarkArtist81/JT004.jpg

It will not be the last trip and hopefully one day more of the Freaks can get together and share the magic....

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k203/DarkArtist81/JT010.jpg

Again, Super huge thanks to Les for letting this all come together and for taking the time out of his insane schedule to have me. You rule man! :bow

I Remember one of your first custom Josh (if not your first).Medieval Ash....it was awesome but not as incredible as the ones your doing nowadays. And I think as a custom artist you are the one that has grown the most in the last year on this board...Those new customs of yours are just breathtaking...now you only need to make eyes as good as Les and you'll be The Master.

Yeah, it's slightly unfinished... Should be a tad darker... But yes, his hair is dark Brown and not black.... Just looks black when he is sweating heavily. Still going to do a dark wash on the hair to give it a some more depth. :D

That's looking much better Josh.
I remember you brought him over, but he was just skin and grey hair, flat...
This is so much more detailed. Love the facial marks and moles and bits. SO much more organic and "real". That's more like it. You did that some with your Wolverine too. It's the flaws that make it work, not the perfection.

Eyes...ok....just less than two weeks!!!...I'll be down...next lesson....eyes! Your's are getting much better though. Each head's (person's) is it's own problems and solutions.

Thanks Les! Yeah, I have to agree on the skin tone thing. It's the little stuff that makes it really pop and seem more realistic. The moles and grooves in the skin, really fun to paint... especially the Obi sculpt, LOTS of cool stuff in that one! I really enjoyed painting it....

And I cannot wait for your arrival! It's going to be very cool.... I revamped the room to make sure you had some stuff to look at and not just an almost empty space. I hope to have a lot more painted too, so that should be nice. Thanks again Les...:rock

Great stuff as always Josh. One thing that's worth mentioning to everyone else is that when he painted my Anakin and Obi-Wan UPS actually mailed my figures to the wrong house! Thankfully the old lady who received them gave me a call which led to me sending a frantic PM to Josh asking that he retrieve them before the old lady, her grandkids, dog, whatever decided to "play" with them (I assumed the package was just delivered to the wrong house on Josh's street.)

Well I think it turned out that the lady actually lived more than half an hour away from Josh but he cancelled his plans to drive out to get them *that very night*. I had no idea until he had already picked them up.

I think it's a fascinating concept, Josh! I'd love to see the next one take a step back from ANH, and show us Ewan still with some color in his hair, but obviously heading toward Guiness Gray.

I wonder if, when SSC finally gives us an ANH Ben, he'd look anything like Ewan with his hair done Ep III style. It's amazing how much their faces look alike, and this really sort of bares that out.

These two I did were commissions... One for JediMike and another for Mfoga. But both entirely different in how they were achieved.

I just love painting gory figures, always makes it a little more fun and you can play around a bit. With this one I wanted a very fresh looking Zombie, that perhaps... with his being in the hospital, had access to quite a bit of available "meals". I wanted his shoes to look as if he had drug them through puddles of blood and gore as he shambled his way room to room, making his rounds and feeding on the bed ridden patients.

Also thought it would be interesting to pose him with the syringe... as if the human side of him did not want to let go of what he once was. He probably has no idea what it is or what it's used for, but he holds on because it is HIS.

Probably overthinking things... but still a lot of fun.

Thanks Joseph! That is exactly what I was going for! The sculpt of the hands and face had bones and veins popping everywhere, as if he was dried up a bit... So I wanted to heighten that effect. And he was in a hospital so you KNOW he had plenty of stuff around to slosh around in... :lol

If Patient Zero wasn't so rare/valuable I'd have loved to see you repaint him. Who knows, it could have even increased in value from it.

Your Subject 5 also looks fantastic. Any chance of more pics of him (or point me in the direction of where they are)? I can't wait for more of these guys (and your repaints of them). I have all 4 right now and I must say they look even better in a group. Having the docs with/without coat also helps keep them from looking the same. I have one with the syringe and the other holding the scalpal too (fits between index and middle finger of left hand).

Just awesome job Josh.

I think you brought much more life to the character. Were as before, he was a pale faced, emotionless, "life"less corpse, your paint job has brought more suffering to him.

With the eyes now painted in, it gives him much more sorrowful look.

Instead of looking like a mindless zombie he looks like he is truly in agony and pain.

IMHO, this is my favorite repaint you have done on a figure. Its not that you just touched up a bad paint app, but you totally changed the complexity of the character.

Awesome job Josh!!!

I completely agree. The thing is we are starting to sound like art-geeks more than collectors now :lol I for one am really into Sideshow's Dead storyline and this repaint really adds a lot of depth to it. Fantastic job. Beyond words.

Ok guys... Les just left and I thought I would post the story while it was still fresh in my mind... So here is his visit and FX con trip from my point of view... :D

It all started with the FM getting a little lost and us meeting in town at Target to lead him towards my house. Ocala can be a little confusing for a newcomer, I know.... I had similiar problems when I first moved here... It's damn near Labyrinth-esque. :lol

Upon arrival I showed off my very small collection room and work area. Les was excited and seemed to still be blown away by it, so that's all that matters. Still a very small collection in comparison to his own...

We talked shop and I showed him some work in progress stuff (top secret) :monkey1, and my fiance made us dinner. We started having this very deep conversation involving everything from our painting experiences to Egyptology and the history of the world in general. It was a marathon of ideas and theories that would have driven Einstein insane... But what a great conversation it was.

We prepared ourselves for the Con the next day, directions and all that... and hit the sack.

The next morning was a breeze, we got up and ready in a little over a half hour and were out the door and on the road towards Orlando.... :rock

We arrived at the Convention center earlier than we thought and got a very nice parking spot, started our walk to acquire our tickets and enter "geek heaven".... :lol

Not the same bed I hope! :lol

And Les looks very suspicious in that photo. :lol :lol

Once we actually got inside, it was nice and calm. We were among maybe 100 other people that had early admission and I started following the whirlwind that was Les as he whipped me from booth to booth looking for figure fodder and cool stuff. Funny thing was, as we were walking around, trying to milk that early hour for all it was worth... we got close to a tattoo booth and met for a moment (even though I hardly recognized him) Andrew Bryniarski from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake/prequel (Leatherface) was laying down getting a tat and said a few words to us for a moment... very cool guy, but as hardcore as you would expect. Below is the only picture I could snag of the guy... kinda blurry and far away...

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k203/DarkArtist81/DSCN1736.jpg

We were at the end of our swag hunt and the rest of the crowd was slowly trickling in the door... So we decided to see what was happening with the honored guests... And walked right smack into Lance Henrickson. He noticed that I wanted to talk to him as I was tapping Les and trying to get him to notice and called us over.... We talked about SSC and the custom Bishop that Les had made and various other things.... It was just cooler than words, hanging out with Lance....

We went ahead and got into his line to get an autograph and got our photos signed by Lance... And another cool conversation with the man... He thanked me for coming and getting an autograph even after talking already with him and wished me well... It was great... I love the "Josh, Help!" bit on the sig...

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k203/DarkArtist81/DSCN1761.jpg

I left his line and IMMEDIATELY got into line for Michael Biehn... We waited for a while, because he was a little late.. And as Lance's died down he went to step away for a moment for a breather and saw me in line again. He pointed out to me and asked if I was getting the full "Aliens" treatment and going for Michael's auto too, I nodded and laughed... as if to say "You KNOW it!". Lance laughed and gave me the ok... Funny moment.

Michael showed up finally, a little scruffy and partied out... he had shades on and smelled like he JUST left the bar. Hilarious guy!! We talked about Aliens and Terminator for a bit and I touched on the desire to see Grindhouse, which he was obviously excited about too. Took a picture and got the auto...

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k203/DarkArtist81/DSCN1763.jpg

The show really started when Les made his way up to Michael and started talking about the Hicks he repainted, in which Michael replied with this hilarious retort about making him look "good" again... Killed everyone around them both... Lance included... Everyone was laughing..

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k203/DarkArtist81/DSCN1733.jpg

We left and started checking the rest of the show out, jumping from booth to booth in a frenzy of activity... spending my cash FAST. We wanted to get to my car and drop off our swag/jackets and made our way to the doors... And lo and behold... Ray Park walks in through the doors.. And to Les' credit, he noticed and told me to turn around. And since I had met Ray at one point for his autograph I just blurted out..."Ray!" Thankfully it wasn't loud or obnoxious, or I would have died of embarrassment. But Ray was very cool, stopping to shake our hands and asking about our say so far even though he really had to make his way to the autograph booth... Oddly enough, the only pic I got gave him "Sith eyes"

After those moments, the rest of the day just blurred together in a cornucopia of meetings and shop talk, figures and celebs... It's very hard to put it all into words... I really just had a good time, none of the people I met rubbed me the wrong way or made me feel like a wierdo... It was great.

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k203/DarkArtist81/DSCN1749.jpg

We saw a lot of ladies, met a ton of people, spent what little fundage we had and just soaked in the day.... I wish you all could have been there to witness the craziness and the fun...

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k203/DarkArtist81/DSCN1744.jpg

We talked a little comic greatness with Matt Wagner (pic above), Les sharing his 1939 Batman love with the comics legend. We met some of the 501st guys, first time for Les... not for me. Great guys though, very nice and they love to take funny photos with Geeks like us....:lol

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k203/DarkArtist81/DSCN1750.jpg

Lastly, before I left I visited Paul Carsen's booth and drooled over his artwork... most of it inspired by the things I love so much... And I could not help but buy the BSG montage he worked on... Great work, I highly highly recommend him!

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k203/DarkArtist81/DSCN1753.jpg

That was the end of the show, not much else to tell... Les and I went home, talking about it all the way and sharing our own individual moments... We stopped and did some Hobby Lobby shopping and scoured video stores for a copy of ALIENS with the cast commentary on it... :lol

We spoke briefly with Customikey before my stupid phone died and took a moment to relax our weary bones...

At the end of the night we had a few beers, sat back sat back and watched ALIENS, listening to the guys we had just met joke about themselves and the this great film that they were lucky enough to work on.... It was a great end to a cool weekend... :rock

I met Andrew in November and had a blast chatting with about Black Label Society, the local biker chapter, transylvania (his latest project is Dracula) and a myriad of horror stuff. He was sat in between Robert Englund and Ari Lehman and we talked crap between the four of us for about an hour.

Later that night Ari & Andrew both attended a local rock show joining the band on stage for 'Die, Die my Darling' by the Misfits.

To say that I was impressed at how much these guys could put away is an understatement.

Quality blokes...

Met Lance last year too. He was very cool (although jet-lagged).

To follow up on my trip to Josh's and to the FX show, I need to post some of the better shots I got of Josh's amazing collection, including many of his already famous repaints.
This was delayed due to my Mom having had some health troubles after my arrival home Sunday, yesterday and today, so it has taken me this long to download the extra pics. (Sorry Josh :o )

I will refrain from naming what is what, as most of you know what they are anyway, and defer to Josh the chance to tell more detail about them...
But, I felt that the trip was not complete without this tale in images.

Like I said in my own FX story, I arrived at his home on Friday night, the 26th, but it was Sunday morning the 28th before we slowed down after the show and he let me go around and take some better shots of his stuff. It was all amazing. He let me keep my bags in there while I stayed, so I would go in and out of his display room, and never without a look around at all this....

So, here are the first five shots I really like (To be continued....)

Thanks again Josh. Your stuff was GREAT!
You need to post some pics of your sketches sometime too. Everyone needs to see Clocktower and your other buddies, and your calendars...after all, "You can always get another Josh!" :lol

Thanks for everything man... :rock

I love the pics as well, much better than most of the ones I was able to take. :D
