And Sean, the entire face, mouth horns... everything was sculpted with Magic sculpt. The horns were just carefully painted to give them a realistic look. Your words pay me the greatest compliment, because I wanted them to look as real as possible. :rock

Well you pulled it off dude, I seriously was wondering like if you used some creature tooth or something, it's got that subtle gloss some natural stuff like that can get, the fading of colors and all, it's amazing. The tattoo work is spectacular but those forehead horns are just incredible what you accomplished there, draws my eyes everytime. Love to shoot this one for you sometime, could get some cool stuff with him in dark shadows where just the whites and horns show on the face, kinda like how Cameron painted highlights on some of the anatomy in ALIENS so in the dark you'd see those subtle lines.

Thanks guys! It was a quick thing to do, the head took a bit of time sculpting. Started out as Tom Cruise.. :lol

The character's name is Nergal (named after the Babylonian God of Pestilence). It's part of a series of figures I am doing, based on a story I am writing. The figure is still in work, needs a bit more polish... But it will come. Just put him on my shelf for now while I get more commission stuff done. :rock

Cool I think you are right and as for my place on the list... hey what can you do but await perfection ! :)

Something I am working on, an original figure... Here is a taste of him, still in work....

Thanks guys, It's been a busy week...

The lack of new pics is not an accident either, I am on the verge of unveiling a LARGE amount of completed heads that will be shipping soon. I've just been holding off, so that I could finish more and have more to show. So expect a good bunch of pics here in the coming days. I'm working hard to get as much done as possible for you all. So expect movement soon. :rock

I'm totally digging your latest creation. It looks like Tim Burton's take on Darth Maul with pure evil poured all over it. He looks like a demonic candy dealer who has candy that tastes so good, you trade your soul for it.

He looks like what a Buffy villain should've looked like.

He's awesome.

Thanks a million, Die! It was one of those customs that acted as an exorcism of sorts for me. I just dove headfirst into my pen and pencil art style and pulled this out. I've drawn so many monsters and villains for years, always loving that stark Burton-esque style that is very German Expressionist in tone. With great inspiration from Les to go ahead and get it done, I just went for it and didn't waste time planning.

Ironically, the sculpt only took me about an hour and a half and the clothing was only a couple of hours in itself. So it was done in a few fast days. From idea to figure. :rock

If Darth Maul had sex with Freddy Krueger and they somehow managed to produce a baby, and that baby was then possessed by a Demon.. it would look like that figure!!! Absolute Sickness man. Excellent work!

I can't tell for sure from the pics.. am I seeing things or does he have a beard with beads ala Jack Sparrow?

Tonight I finished the first of my Roys, which I believe to be Galactiboy's. Also finished Voorhees27's Myers head and am almost done with ObsoleteMan's also. Just needs hair on that one.

I am almost done with Vasquez, Tay's T-800. Done with Natrix's Sith Anakin, Vader's Bale, DK2K's Leia, Steve's Harry Potter, also close on a few Superman heads, two Wolverines, two Aragorn's, and am also close on sending out another Joker and nearing completion on a Rorschach and the second Roy... So... LOTS to show. Pics coming soon guys.

Next up... First is Equilibrium Bale, which doesn't do it justice either. One of my favorite repaints ever, lots of fun. Also up is the Hasbro Hoth Leia, this one was HARD... really tough to make her look human. But I think I did a decent job of translating that old sculpt. Brace yourself, when you see that head in person you're going to lose your ^^^^, no photo can really prepare you for the quality of Josh's or any of these custom artists' work that is apparent in hand. The real problem is most photos don't show the subtle work, and that's always what's the most impressive and makes things sing. I still haven't shot him that way, but I will, but the weathering on Michael Myers far surpasses what you'd think it is from photos, very detailed and realistic and clearly a lot of hard work put into it.

Thanks for all of the support guys... Sean is certainly right, that there are a lot of subtle details that wash out in photos (my bad ones that is :lol). :lol Thanks guys. That Hero Head has been painted by me 4 or 5 times so far, and I get better at it every time. It's a great sculpt, just a bit rough in areas. Paints like a dream though.

And DK2K, it is entirely possible. I can make ANY version of Arnold from T1, Army jacket version (which I have done twice), Police station scene (might be hard to find the shades though), or the end with the super damaged head.

Actually, the boots for his were the Terminator boots from Hot Toys. But I could fabricate those boots from boots available online.

Josh, I'm fairly new to your work and the stuff on your thread is amazing. I do have one question; I was wondering, when you create new sculpts, what do you use (resin brand etc) to create the headsculpt casts, and what manufacturer do you use for the molds themselves?

The reason I ask is that I have a Kane headsculpt from ALIEN which I think will be completed tomorrow to replace the 'Freddy Mercury' sculpt the Hot Toys figure comes with and coming to the US from England I'm not familiar with the casting and mold making materials / manufacturers available here, so I thought I may as well ask a master.

Best Regards, Space Jockey.

Do you already have your wire bundles and stuff?i have a few. i might try to find a different gauge. i havent decided yet. i'll hold some up to the pack after it is painted black to see if they look good.

so i got some acrylic paints in a bottle. im wondering if i can just paint with it as is or do i need to thin it out first.

Definitely thin it out a bit first. when you pull out the paint onto your plate or newspaper, or whatever you use... mix a small amount of water in with it. This will help with brushlines (after a few coats) and will elimate runs and textured surface. :rock

10-13-2008, 08:09 PM
The Jokers are progressing slow but steady. I'm working on the heads en masse right now, trying to do it all at once. Next I will do all of the vests together in one heap. It's the best way to get it done and stop procrastinating on it. Right now I am focusing on the Halloween/Roy/Jason stuff first to try and catch it during the season. Jokers will all go out before Christmas time/DVD release for sure. Hopefully faaaar sooner.

I have 5 of the shirts already, from BillyB... for those who paid. The next Joker I show will have that shirt on it, so you will see what it's about. But only those who have sent money will have that one. I still have to go through my records to know exactly who has already.

But lots coming...

And for those patiently waiting for your Michael figures, I want to show you why you're waiting and why it's worth it. Josh spares no time or effort on the details in this figure.

http://www.swmmedia.com/DA/MYERS/A.jpg

I can't believe how realistically he dirtied and wore out the heels of the jumpsuit, it's crazy at this scale.

http://www.swmmedia.com/DA/MYERS/B.jpg

Here you can see some of the weathering, both at a fabric level and at a coloring level, of the jumpsuit, just fantastic, very real-world, used looking, adds great authenticity and realism to it.

http://www.swmmedia.com/DA/MYERS/C.jpg

More weathering on the leg and some amazing mud and dirt work on the top side of the boots.

http://www.swmmedia.com/DA/MYERS/D.jpg

And not like most folks will ever see it, but he takes the time to properly wear out the bottoms of the boots too, just because it's realistic.

http://www.swmmedia.com/DA/MYERS/E.jpg

http://www.swmmedia.com/DA/MYERS/F.jpg

And lastly, the blood work on the hands and knife, first rate.

I understand the eagerness some of you may be feeling for this figure, but hopefully I've been able to alleviate that a bit showing you just how worth the waiting is.

And SEAN!! Dude... THANK YOU for those pics, It's amazing even to me to see the small things brought to a larger size. I work hard on the jumpsuits to give them as much detail and dirt as I possibly can. And getting my hands on those awesome Tamiya weathering sticks, that helped a lot. That's where I get that badass mud effect.

I just wanted him to look as real as possible, and any mechanics' coveralls are going to be filthy and WORN. So that's what I tried to do. I also LOVE those pics of Myers murdering Rambo, that was hilarious.... :lol

Tonight, to update you guys... I finished ALL of the Roy outer masks (the hoods), and one of the inner faces. Just need to do 5 more inner faces and dirty the clothing. The jumpsuits have already been sanded and given the proper holes.

I also got more casting supplies, so I am trying to make the masks I need.

That's why I jumped at ordering Josh's back when all he had was Blake's head for casting. Josh and I have had many a talk back and forth on Halloween and Michael Myers, and we both saw eye to eye on him and had the same enthusiasm for the character so I knew what I'd be getting in a figure made by him. Now I get to look at the figure and enjoy having an awesome piece from a good friend and can admire the hard work of a passionate fan.

DarkArtist81

Thanks man! It was a very obscure Jason figure to do, but looks pretty badass in the lineup. The mask was the thing I had the most clear shots of, and even though many mask makers tend to do the mask as if it weren't muddy or wet.... I wanted to replicate that look it had in the movie.

The clothes were tricky. I have seen some shots that show them badly damaged and such, but in the film you don't really see that. It just comes off as soaked clothing that looked like he was JUST buried. So I sanded it a good bit, put a few wear holes in it and sprayed the Hell out of it.

I have just always loved the look of this mask, it is the only one that has the straps attached UNDER the mask itself and not on top of it.

You know what you should do and what I think would look amazing? Replace the body with a larger one, something almost even twice the thickness, I think it would look awesome. It seems his clothes look tight on him in the movies, I would try this, pants and shirt!

I took my T2 T-800 big boy SS body and used it for my Myers custom (your sculpt) and it looks better, more beefed up. Just a suggestion, imo both Myers and Jason should look larger even if its not movie accurate.

Picture a Jason sculpt and mask on a Drago rubber body!

DarkArtist81
10-17-2008, 11:23 PM
Oh man, do I ever wish... That would be badass, not to mention optimal.

The only problem is that there is no readily available Big body out there. HT is closer, but it's too pricey. My customs would raise up to $200 a pop if I used them. All of the bodies I have seen, or that are available to get anywhere are just normal size.

I actually have to cheat a bit with my figures, using sweaters underneath shirts and such to bulk them up. Some company just needs to put out big bodies, for customizers like myself. We need them, especially for figures like these.

Oh totally but even just for fun, just to see what it would look like and not necessarily for sale. I would have tried it but the SS heads aren't compatible with the HT's rubber bodies.

Great job on Obi Josh. I have a feeling he will look a bit out of place once the Clones start shipping. He doesn't have a bit of weathering (except maybe the belt) and will look like an angel or something compaired to the dirty clothes. Definately looks better, like he as seen some action, which of course he did. :clap

Thanks guys. I just love bringing real wear and tear to characters who fight on the ground. Jedi are usually so clean and pristine, so I wanted to bring out some more of a tough element with Obi. To show that he fought right in there with the troops, shrapnel flying, robe burning. :rock

And Joe, the armor was EASIER to paint than the Medi. Thanks to it being solid and not soft, it took paint better and I could do more degrees of damage. I will even be going back to the hardcore areas and dremeling a bit to get some pitted blast marks and such. I love it, 100% better for customization than Medicom.

Hi Josh , this is probably way ahead of what your planning but with the new Friday the 13th on the way , sideshow loosing the license ,and the trailer just being shown everywhere I feel nows the time to ask.
Are you planning a custom figure for the new movie ? :monkey3:D

DarkArtist81
10-25-2008, 09:50 AM
To answer the question about Evil Dead 2 Ash, I DO have the head and Book of the Dead coming. I will be modifying the head to match ED2 and making a mold of both sides of the book so I can make a working book with actual pages inside. I still need the chainsaw though... but if I can't score one... I will just make one myself.

As for Jason, I AM working on a custom. I will have to have the coats made custom, as there are NO jackets out there close enough. Right now what is holding me back is the lack of facial reference. Once I get a shot of his actual face under that mask, it's DONE.

Well, I've done up a WIP Proto for pics... The head paint is almost done, just need eye tweaks and a few areas to be worked out... but the head is about there. The clothing was quickly tossed together. I will probably use the shirt, as it is pretty good. But the straps were just tossed on and the pants aren't the right color, and on top of that he is holding the wrong type of shottie... But... it's a WIP. I just wanted to share it with you guys...

I also finished a few PF repairs for some folks and thought I would post them up. Repaired a chip on the neckline and a broken wing on Cap, and a broken lip and mask wing on Wolvie...

Is it just me or does the head look a little out of scale (too large for this body)?

DarkArtist81

It's really just because of the standard Sideshow syndrome. I will probably have to use a HT body for this custom because of this. It's also because the shirt is so tight and the lack of a hand. Makes him look smaller than he really is.

I didn't foget. I just got sidetracked. I have some diffents things that age metals to oxidize it of burn it and whatever. I play to weather it and make it look very authentic after the final one is built. And now the UPDATE .....

Thanks,
Ryan

Ok. Here is the prototype almost finished. The leather glove came out a little small so I am re-working the pattern on that. Also my mini-fasteners will not be here till Tues or Weds so I can't fully rivet it together yet, but this was really just a pattern making test anyway. I am pleased with the way it turned out and can't wait to here Josh's re-action when he gets to slap one on his Freddy figue :D Anyway Here it is thus far.....
