Again Josh, you paint app is excelent....With anything you paint now, it seems to come out nearly perfect. You have definitely gotten a firm grip on your painting skills. Its a home run EVERY time now. Its pretty cool to see just how far you have come.:rock:rock:rock

Wow.....thanks to everyone who was so kind to leave words of encouragement and praise. I am still kind of in shock as to how it all came together. This figure was one I was very worried about messing up. He's my favorite 12 inch figure and because of that I did not want to destroy it. Lucky for me, Les had already done such a wonderful repaint... so at least I had an example to learn from.
I did things carefully and step by step until I was satisfied, and I think that it caused my skills to evolve a bit. I honestly still cannot believe I painted him. The eyes are my best yet, as is the hair... I seriously can not stop looking at him.
Thank you all... I hope my next paintjob is as great as this one was. :lol

Thank you so much Mikey..... I have really been trying hard to do the best I could on these and Supes was a big challenge. I mixed 3 or 4 different shades of blue for his eyes and I used them all to get the effect right. I'm really glad that you like him. It means a lot. Seriously.

That's the way I do it too! Sometimes the shades are so subtle, you're n ot sure if you're even doing anything until you get the pupil in! Awesome work!

I think you could go with Les' method for Bats' eyes. You know, with the white showing below the pupil. I've forgotten the word for it, but you know what I mean.

I think you are right on that one Mikey... I'm not very happy with the way the eyes turned out. I seriously think that the eyes are too far up on the head or something. I may have to do those over... And yeah, the "simpaku" (maybe the right spelling?) eyes would do this character a LOT more justice.
I need a new brush. I wore out my smallest tip painting Supes. :lol

You may not like this idea, but you could try to paint the whites of his eyes a little darker than usual, either with a mix in of taupe or just gray. His eyes are generally shadowed, and darkening the whites might tame them down a bit. I'm not sure about this, though. I did this to my Gamorrean, and it worked out pretty well, but there's a major difference betwen a guy dressed in a pig suit and a guy in a batsuit...
I wonder what Les thinks of this idea, too....

That's actually a good idea. I'll give it a shot tomorrow and repost pics.... it's just crazy enough to work.
I'm really not happy with the position of the eyes on the sculpt...waaaay too far up on the head IMO... At least the jaw was easy to work with.... very nice to paint.

Also today I painted Jason 7 a little bit.... just to try and move into the rest of my collection with the tweaks...

Today I finally got around to finishing that old Bespin Luke custom I'd had for the longest time.
The head is from Sovereign....kinda... it's a cast of one they made. The clothes are Hasbro, as is the belt (kinda obvious there). I used SSC Anakin's saber, being as it is the closest to Luke's Bespin blade.
The clothing was weathered and painted, using several shots from the film for reference. Such as....
http://photo-origin.tickle.com/image/147/1/5/O/147151305O354714789.jpg

I love weathering costumes.... on any scale really. It's fun and I get to cut stuff! :monkey5
Right now I am going through all of my old projects and doing anything I can. Kurgan is actually next on the to do list. I just bought a bit of mesh to use as armor skeleton... so that should help the process a bit.

To practice a little bit with the sculpey before tackling Kurgan again... I thought I would put those Bucks that I won to good use and attempt a zombie couple custom....
So I started the guys head, working mostly for wounds and bone structure. Will probably do a little more fine tuning tomorrow, sanding and etching fine lines.... I think I need to do something with the lips... maybe lose the entire bottom part or something....
Anyway....Here are pics so far....

I second the lip losing. In fact on my Tarman custom I cut the whole jaw off the head entirely and started sculpting from there so I could get the open slack jaw look.

Thanks a ton Les.... I HAVE been on a creative streak lately.. That trip to my future film school really jazzed me up and got the juices flowing again. I also got a nice tutorial from a friend and it's helped my skin tones and shading... so that has helped too.

awseome job on Kurgan. I think the scare on his head loosk sick now!! Your repaint make it looks much more like the Kurgan. The skin tones you used hightlight the contours of his face, which he has many, and SS paint app. failed to do. He doesn't have that "sickly" pale face anymore. 100% improvement on the product. I also like the paint around the mouth! Also the arm is a good idea. More flesh tone. The Clancy Brown likeness is much more apparent with the repaint!!!!
This pic best show off everything I like anbout your repaint!!!! The gray shading around the temple and forehead and scar all look great Josh. The shadowing under the eyes is also well done.

Thanks King! I'm growing with every repaint... I find new things that need fixing each time, things I do wrong and such... but the journey is a blast and I'm 100% happy with Kurgan. I might actually do a little tweaking on him, but overall.... very happy.
I get Jack Sparrow tomorrow and I will try to finish him this weekend, so expect pics as well. :D

You makin' me all misty eyed here! :D
But really, you are doing a great redo on this Jack Sparrow bro!
Love it.
I find it interesting that on the tat that's supplied with the figure, I assume it is at any rate, that it is the "real" one Johnny got with the sparrow pointing towards him, rather than away like in the first Pirates movie... The one in the movie was painted on, and after Johnny's son was born, he had a real one put there with the bird towards him. That's the tat in the second and third flicks now...
But, either way Your figure rocks my friend!
Terrific work!

Dude, hands down best Obi-Wan repaint EVER. Seriously awesome job. :chew
Dude, hands down best Obi-Wan repaint EVER. Seriously awesome job. :chew
Yeah Deke, he's got like 5 layers of color texturing in the beard, we went back and forth a bit on it... I'm sure he can describe it much better than i can but basically he repainted the hair eyebrows and beard to lighter shades of brown and blonde... and then we took a look at it and it was really good, but then I wanted more and asked him to use/blend reddish blonde highlight tints over that...
Josh said he used a technique he learned from the great Figuremaster Les to pop the beard with layers of blonde and reddish blonde tones and he hit it out of the park...
Anyway, Josh clear-sealed the head tonight and will post a few more pics tomorrow... he told me the pics he took today don't really capture the beard color texturing and it looks tons better in person...
Thanks Josh, I know it was very stressfull and challenging for you but you did a great job bro.. and you were a pleasure to work with!

You did an amazing job on Ps' Obi Wan Josh. I think its perfect. Literally, perfect!!!!:bow
DarkArtist81
09-19-2006, 04:07 AM
Thanks everyone!! It was stressful as Hell and I have a little less hair now for it.... but overall it was a nice experience. Paul kept me leveled and pushed me at every step to get the best work possible. And for that, half of this praise goes to him! :lol
I started with a red base, losing a lot of that dark brown to aid in shading it with his cheek. And then I added a blondish red drybrushed atop that, followed with another layer of almost pure blonde. Turned out that it was just too blonde at that moment, with just not enough to make it pop...
So using a technique from Les, I did a red wash on the beard... wiping with my fingers as he explained... And it really deepened the color and blended it very nicely. This was followed by another simple layer or blondish red to get even more depth. It was nearly perfect then, but we went over that a tiny bit more to add a few more layers.... and finally the clearcoat was added and that was that.
I've learned most of all that Obi's beard is tough to get right. In most pics it looked almost reddish brown, but if light caught it.... it looked almost blonde. So I had to do so tricky painting to try and capture both looks to try and get it to look right. It was hard.... but at least it's finished now.... :lol
Here it is with the flash so that you can see some of the layering.... even then it's washed out a little.... but it's there....

Your fleshtones, as always, are so natural and life-like. I know I've asked you this before but on your basecoat do you go with a darker, redder mix of flesh then add highlighting coats to a lighter shade? I'm always worried that if I make the basecoat too dark and red it will make it look like a sunburn.

Ok guys....painted my Obi-Wan last night... thought I would share it with you. I corrected Ewan's eye color as well... just to be "actor" accurate and not exactly character accurate...
The clothes took to the water treatment well, but beware the belt... it DOES stain the sash! Found out the hard way. Overall, I am Very very happy with him... just a great figure. The beard and hair look different in several of these pics and that is because of the lighting. Sometimes the red shows, sometimes the blond. Thanks a lot Chase... Hopefully tomorrow I can get some really nice daylight pics. Most of the ones I took today did not come out the way I wanted them to...
The eyes really sell it though.... they took a good while to get right...:D
Very nice Josh! The flesh tones are excellent and I see you used a similar but different color palate for the hair and beard and he looks terrific. :D
Btw, my now "famous" Josh repainted Obi head came today and I am still stunned by it. At first the hair and beard looked simple shades of light brown with no red in it at all, then in different sunlight it looked completely different, hair a bit darker and beard with blonde and reddish highlights. It's really trippy how the beard catches different lights and throws off different colors, sometimes blonder, other times light brown with reddish tones... in the shade almost brownish and in direct sunlight it almost appears fleshtoned, it's nuts I tell ya, NUTS! Like three different paintjobs in one, I am now calling like the "amazing miracle color changing Obi head!!!" :D
Thanks so much Josh, will have it mounted tomorrow, it is actually still a bit tacky so he is staring out an open window looking west towards the Pacific!

Hello everyone... I just wanted to come on here and give you guys an update. I know it's been quiet on the DA front for a week or so now...
I'm up to my neck in repaints and am working through them as we speak. I'm almost finished with a couple from Khev and Pickard as well as others... and I still haven't touched my Qui-Gon and Mace yet. But expect progress soon on that front.
My Dad's Tattoo shop is almost finished, so that is where I have been for most of this weekend... Trying to get the finishing touches on that. AND a guy I know on the F13 boards is paying me to put together a nice Jason costume for him, to look like Part 7's Jason. So, that is gonna keep me tied up for a good while.
But I'd say that all of this has put me behind about a week or so.... not too bad, but still. For those waiting.... I promise to get to work on them ASAP. And I should have them done in time for next Monday if I'm lucky.

Darkening the white stitching is also a big improvement.

Thanks T.O.M..... Yeah, the factory apps just did not show how nice the sculpt was, and the blood was not sufficient for my tastes either. I used a ton of reference to get it right, and thankfully it turned out good.

Damn son! That's good work! :chew
Criticism...MINOR one...look good at Samuel L Jackson's eyes. I notice he has a sort of ruddy quality to his eyes, not quite bloodshot, but with some noticable redness in the corners. Makes him look angrier too. But he has this. All the time.
Don't have any pics on hand, but look good and note this small detail. I do like the brightness of your painted whites though, so try not to lose that. Just add a light wash of clear gloss mixed with a small amount of red mixed with a bit brown, or with some Burnt Sienna, and let it pool more in the corners.
(be careful not to make him look like he's crying....SLJ doesn't cry! You hear me MOFOS! :lol )
Otherwise, EXCELLEMENTO! Perfectimundo!
Great skin tones! Hey, are those finger blends I see! :D
BTW, NOT a criticism of the sculpt, but...has anyone noticed how Mace looks a bit like Yul Brenner? in his facial expression?
DarkArtist81
10-10-2006, 04:48 PM
Thanks Les!! I was wondering how I could achieve that look! He always has those "Mega Pissed" slightly bloodshot eyes... I'll have to try that out and see if it works. Maybe I'll do the same to Jason as well.... probably work wonders.
And yeah, he DOES look like Yul Brenner!!!

I'm very happy... finally my workload has begun to lighten... I know I've been kinda quiet as of late. But my Halloween costume work is finished and I am starting on commissions as we speak as well as my own stuff...
Just got my Myers figure and am gonna resculpt his mask to get a more accurate Halloween look. When I get that finished I am gonna repaint the head to make it look better as well, with a proper flesh tone covered with white. I'm really excited to do this and hopefully it will work out well. If it does, I intend on getting a second Myers and making a custom H2 Myers as well. Blonde up the hair a little and dirty the mask a little... should be cool to achieve.
Anyway... expect more stuff soon guys!!!:chew

As I expected, it's not nearly as bad as you made it out to be. The hair, which you said was giving you trouble, looks great. And now that i see your eyes, I remember what a pain they were to paint. Small eyes are so difficult (that's why Watto was such a pleasure, big firiggin orbs!)

Thanks guys! When Mike first came to me with the idea I was a bit skeptical... not sure if it could work. But the more I work on it, the more I think it DOES work. He looks like an old man now, almost nothing like Ep III Obi.... Funny how a skin repaint and hair change could alter a sculpt so much.
I can't wait to see what he ends up looking like when I'm finished...:D

I think it looks amazing. I went out and got a Hasbro Obi ANH to swap clothing but they are too small on the SST Obi, so I went after a Masterpiece Anakin ROTJ Hasbro because its 13" and might make a better swap. I can't wait to get the piece back it looks better than I imagined! Oh and Josh, can't wait to see Aragorn because I think I might have found my next commission from you. ;)

Wow....Thanks a ton Mike! I'm very happy that you are digging the repaint efforts. I went back and forth on the skin tones, trying to find one that matched up to what I thought an aged Ep III Obi would have. And for this one, I think I chose wisely in going with blue instead of green eyes.
I also cannot wait to get finished with Aragorn as I am really getting exicited to see what he looks like.... :D

Thanks OrbitingX! I really appreciate the comments AND it's nice to see a new face around here! Welcome and glad you like my stuff....
Yeah, the chin was something I almost missed until I printed out a few pics... I then made some serious decisions about his facial growth pattern and thickness (which varied from scene to scene, really). I went with the slightly thicker facial hair in the end.. just looked better to me, and worked well with the sculpt.
As for the eyes, they were sorta tricky. It reminded me of Luke... Trying to find a way to get rid of the surprised look without making him look sleepy. I think it worked out well in the end... I can't wait to have lighter pics to show off a little bit...

Thanks guys!! Yeah, that first shot was it... and ironically the first I took! I love the pose as well.
Though none of them show the amount of paint work on the jacket and the clothes. Man... was that Jacket ever hard... I was able to sand the sheen off of it, but any more and it would be damaged and not look good.. so I took to drybrushing and washing... It worked nicely and gave the jacket an older look. Not as ancient as I would like it to look, but very nice. The inner vest was a lot of fun as in the film it looks nearly black from filth... so I did a lot of paint work there to darken it up. I also stole Mikey's idea and put in wire on the collar of the vest and jacket.
And thanks Pixle! That really makes me happy... It's fun for me to go back and look at my first pictures as well as the first pieces I did. Progress is always nice. :D
I hope to take some finished Obi shots for you guys, maybe borrow the clothes from another Obi just for pics... He ships out this Friday and he was nude, so I had to use Qui-Gon's robe for the pics... :rotfl

Couldn't agree more. If Sideshow hired DA, Figuremaster Les, CustomMikey and Hurricane it would increase the greatness of their figures by about 1000%. Les, I have one of Josh's pieces, and he does indeed do quality work.
It's thrilling to see what you, Josh, did with Aragorn. He looks wonderful. I agree about the beard, it certainly does change a bit. But I think going with the slightly thicker look was a wise decision, more matching with the sculpt itself. Can't wait to see some quality close-ups of your weathering.
I worry about sanding or otherwise distressing the clothing because it's bound to make it more prone to tearing or other problems down the line. I feel safer just trying to achieve the results exclusively in paint. I echo Les' sentiments about getting us into a room together. My guess is that this board is as close as we'll get to that. Sigh. Les, I don't know if you're that much older. What are you, mid-30's?
Question: Did you paint around the hair or pull it off to get at the face?
DarkArtist81
11-09-2006, 02:57 AM
Thanks guys! With this kind of support it's hard NOT to produce quality work...:lol
I agree with you there Les... I can't imagine if we all were together, our combined skills would be quite the formidible group. At least the two of us are close enough to one day meet up and gawk over each other's stuff! :D
And my fiance is trying to get a new camera... we probably will around wedding time... so maybe another half a year with the cheap one. I can't wait though.. it would be nice to not have to worry about blurry shots as much.
And Mikey... yeah, I echo your statement on the sanding. I realized that after a few seconds on the jacket and I think that's what stopped me. It's crazy how much that sheen still wants to stay on, no matter what you do. The rest of the outfit was easy... but that jacket was a job in and of itself.
And the hair, I didn't remove it... too scared to... I actually taped back the front strands and just held the sides out as I painted the skin tones. I then wen back and carefully did the hair inside that had been "skin toned". It was tricky... but worked in the end.
Still hammering down my skin tone issues as well.... I should be back to my old paint brand after this friday and I'll feel better about my stuff. But Aragorn turned out fantastic... couldn't be happier.

BUT, I ain't no spring chicken, not among you lot!... 45.
Yeah, I'd pay good money to see Josh's stuff in person. I may yet too, before too much longer.
If, one day, some mid-country set Con allows for some of us to meetup, consider it done!
As for sleep, DD! Man! I was up til 2am myself painting on my way behind work last night too! I NEVER get days off, and am still behind. Ask Pjam or Gruff (or some other members here) if patience with me is a virtue or not. I have to commend Josh and Mikey for getting it done faster than me, if indeed they do...because to do work like this, like Josh's, relatively fast, and of such good quality, is a blessing.
Anyway, just wait Josh, you get that camera, and GET YOU ONE OF THESE PHOTO TENTS (Ask Mikey!) and your workload will triple bro!
You're getting there on your skin tones. Don't let the criticisms get to you. Too red skin is sometimes a photo/lighting thing, or some other anomoly that you didn't account for.
My suggestion is to mix a nice midtone base skin, that you like, and that you KNOW photos well, then use it in mixes with the other shading colors. If you ever get YOUR color, some "perfect" skin base, and you need one for all race variations, then you can rock out your paints from a good, comfortable starting point. Just be careful about certain characters tans, or color variations.
Too often too, I see someone fall in love with a certain color paint, and use it over and over to their detriment. Stay with basics and with colors like Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna and other base tones so you can always shift an "incorrect" color easily with a single repair coat, rather than a total repaint.

Josh don't you ever sleep man?!?!? I know I don't but that's no excuse for you! :D
LOL! No, just getting up for work this morning... always check the boards before I drag myself through the door...:lol
Thanks for the tips Les... Yeah, the skin was killing me. I got used to a certain brand and ran out right in the middle of several clients repaints. I went to the store and they were out of my paint. So I had to get some stand by stuff and it was not what I was used to... It took a lot of mixing and remixing to get it right and that took a lot out of me... not to mention my time. But now I've got the hang of it again and should have my brand paint again this Friday... so crisis over.. I think.
I usually use Burnt Sienna and Warm Skin tone mixes, with a bit of light skin tone to even things out and give it more depth. And none of my figures tones match at all... At first I tried... but now the differences are fun to notice. Han might need to be lightened a bit sooner or later, he's looking a little rough compared to the newer guys...
It usually takes me about a week or two to finish a repaint, longer if I run into problems like I have lately. But most of the time it's smooth sailing...
The thing is.... I can pump out Obi-Wan's like no one's business... I've done so many now that it's second nature.
