If you don't have one, your next investment should be in a $35 Stinger shop-vac from Home Depot. You should hold items that require heavy dremeling, like your Jason masks, in front of the hose with the vac running while you grind, so the dust is sucked away (and still wear a mask while doing it).

Resin dust will really make you sick.

Lord yes! I do ALL my dremeling outside! And let the wind blow the dust away from me. If I recall, when I worked at the Zoo, we drilled and ground a lot of resins for statuary, that is similar to many of the resins we use and get for these heads. The smells often remind me of those days. Anyway, I remember reading how the dust from this stuff can give you lung cancer, or other fibroses problems related to like Asbestos damage, since the lungs cannot dissolve the plastic particulate matter. BE CAREFUL JOSH!
Ventilate and keep it out of the house!

Listen to Gruff! Gruff is wise!

Thanks guys! Yeah, Les.... The TV was sadly my idea... I have no priorities it seems.. :lol

Ans Ashton... YES... that is indeed our man John... smoking cigarettes.. begging for me to finish him. The Bond head is at his feet, finished, gloating at John... They are a loud pair. :rock

And Gruff, that is a good idea... My Wife made me move my Dremel operations out from the lawn and into the back porch. It's screened in, so I still get air... but that stuff gets everywhere. I will certainly have to look into that. Those Jasons create quite a pile. And I really need to get a dust mask.

I think it's wicked cool how you are filling these gaps for folks Josh. I know having my own in hand Jason 6 you did, or redid, for me, is one of the highlight figures of my set. Your attention to details, especially on these evil dudes, is stellar stuff!
I am tempted to get one of your new ones myself.

Thanks man! I used to own a Cemetery Gates H2 Warlock mask and I based this custom mainly on the intel I got from owning it. The hair was something I wanted to get right, I dremeled into the head deep so that the hair would be slick like it was in H2 and I also wanted those wisps on the sides.

Even put the "6 shots" in his chest for good measure. :rock

Factory paint in the middle.

Thanks for the shots, Les! It was awesome to see you and to hang out. I will treasure my Jackal as well... Thank you so much for that, it really stunned me and my Wife loved it. :rock

I'll post pics for the guys here soon.

Our talks this weekend were really profound, and got me thinking about my art style. It's a reflection of who I am and what I have gone through. Many bad things happened to me throughout my life and I think that my personality and my artwork has to shine bright to peer through the dark haze. My work is stark and linear, a reflection of my early artwork and a look into the vault where I lock away my painful emotions.

Sadly, not much of my figure work really lets me get that out... some do.. but not most of it. I really want to pursue some canvas, to paint again. And once I DO catch up, I hope to do more original works.

Hanging out with Les is less about learning technical skills and more about analyzing what it means to be an artist and a customizer... not to mention just spending time with a friend. Our conversations span from love's lost, film, classic artwork, history, psychology and the stresses that only 100 heads on your table can bring. :lol

I am thankful to have him as a friend and thankful to my customers for allowing me to take this weekend off from my mountain of work.

As always, a trip to his house rejuvenates me and puts me back on track artistically... so those awaiting work... prepare to be dazzled. :rock

Shots incoming, expect pics tomorrow!

Wow! Les made that? That looks like something you would make but not him! A little "out of the box" for Les :lol

It IS! And that is why he gave it to me... he said.."This belongs with the Darkartist." He said that it was really something he didn't do often, horror customs, and that it seemed a bit like something that he was meant to get back from the person who commissioned it... just so he could give it to me.

Great repaints Josh. :rock:rock
SnakeSucker's head looks kinda sad in that pic where he is far away but the other shots make him look menacing. One thing though, for the HT's Joker when you added the pink below the eyes (something that all HT figures lack), it kinda makes his eyes look bloodshot, a simple fix I'm sure.

Anyone have photos of the concept Joker? I've never heard of it before

And just checking, did you get my payment for the Rorschach figure I sent a while back? Never got a response, and want to make sure it got to you

I've never been before, but they were getting ready for it when I was there this past weekend. I looked online and saw that they have a lot of New Line horror icons show up there, along with the classic Universal monsters. Sounds like a blast, and right up your alley. :D

Jeez, the concept Joker is horrific looking. Would have been interesting if they went that route... but might have been hard to emote through that kind of a face.

Seems like they toned it down by adding some Joker color to it.

Seems like they toned it down by adding some Joker color to it.

They did a little more to tone it down, if you look at the eyes, there is a bit of scarring underneath the left also the scarring looks to completely cover the upper lips and is very uneven and is completed with multiple gashes making the cuts look much more violent. Also no lip paint so they'd be open and fixed wounds....The pupils look almost black as if he was wearing Alienesque contacts and therefore continuing the black eerie look of the facial structure. I like the blue suit over the white and standard tie although matching the tie would be difficult. I can't tell if the smear on the collar looks like blood smear as if the scars were consistently bleeding or bleed when he got angry emotional, etc or if those are the splashes of color to make him more clowny.

Got my Leia head in the mail this week.

This repaint is simply amazing! So much better than I imagined it would be. Now I just need to get Jabba and Salacious repainted and I will be set. :)

Here's the only good pic I could get of Leia. More pics later if I can get some good light and the cats allow it.

You on a Leia roll ? :monkey3

That's awesome Shropt! I'm so glad you FINALLY got her... She was a lot of fun, and she looks badass mounted. :rock

And Fingaz... Rorschach is coming. I went to see Les this weekend and am at his place as we speak. I finished cleaning up the casting and dremeled it... the body is done and it just needs the paint and the weathering... so either I will have it done tomorrow night when I get home or Monday after class.

Sweet love it when Josh posts pics !

I also touched up my HT Wolf today when it arrived.. just a bit more color on the head itself and spots here and there... also a dark wash on the mask and steel drybrushing...

Indeed! When Joker got close to shipping, I started to think about what goodies I had laying around from other figures and finally, I found good use for the cue from T-800, it doesn't really work for him, but great for Joker, hell even the cigar stub from T-800 can be used, "I'm only burning my half," it's a fun figure for adding random weapons and things from other figures to.

I was tempted to buy Les' custom, but what I'm really after is the Colloseum armor, especially with his cleaned up beard and everything, just the image that sticks in my head. A 1/6 version of the guy he fights solo the first time with the tigers and everything would be sweet too with the mask he has.

Josh a quick question for ya. I've got the yellow AOTC Commander coming. What do I need to get to make him look pretty beat up like the ones you did for me. Since its already painted with the color markings I'm gonna try this one. I'll see how bad I can muck it up. :lol I'll leave the all white one to you for the markings we talked about on the phone.

I could have sworn I was one of the first 3 for the Myers sculpt  well I guess not then.

Small suggestion, if I may say so. You might want to soften the definite of the white embossing around the eyes where they wrap around the nose. I had the mask myself once and always had it burnt in my mind from the movies, most of the time, the shadows really only showed embossing around the cheek bone area and the higher, brow point but not much around the eyes. Just a small thing, still look stellar regardless. Look forward to seeing how you handle the costume.

I must have written it down wrong... I will do yours then, as the last of the three. I'll go ahead and cast Ian's head and get started on that, but I really want to get those three haired and finished tomorrow.

And Sean... I see exactly what you mean now! I was using the Mcfarlane figure as reference, just looked up shots on Google and I see exactly what you mean. I will modify it a bit with Magic sculpt before making the mold. :rock

Funny you say that, as it was always something that bothered me with the McFarlane.

Interestingly, I knew Ghost Face before Michael Myers, Scream and Silence of the Lambs were the first horror movies I'd ever seen, I was just the right timing when Scream came out, stuck with me instantly and I loved the look of the Ghost Face mask, used to sketch it in class when my mind wandered, often haha, and got the mask. I've been a big kid for quite some time so when I wanted to be Ghost Face for Halloween, the costume for my height was too snug, my mom made me one all her own, it was more accurrate and everything, I loved it, had so much fun running around dressed up like that. Then when I first saw Halloween, fell in love with Michael's look for probably the same reasons, which is natural since GF is based off Michael's core elements, simplicity, bold shadow spots for eerie reveals. Michael's better though, and of course being a force of nature more than just a man makes him more intriguing as well, and scream never had a G vs. E like Loomis and Michael, they had their Laurie Strode but no Loomis styled character, which fit with their villain type, but is still an element that makes Halloween awesome.

DarkArtist81
08-31-2008, 11:00 PM
I was really into the first Scream as well, being such a huge Halloween fan... it was a natural fit. And I loved the writing and how it was structured, not to mention the amazing costume. It really stays in your mind, very simple... but still scary.

I've ALWAYS wanted a good figure of it, and desperately have been trying to get it done. Figured I would stay on the horror kick and get it done. :rock

MaulFan
08-31-2008, 11:02 PM
I'm glad you're taking initiative on it.

McFarlane's was acceptable for lack of options, but between the pose, the off details of the mask, and the almost Force Unleashed flow to the costume, it just doesn't feel like all that good of a representation. I find the McF's hood clings too tight to the head, which was a flaw with the store bought costume, my homemade hood hung perfectly. The mask face is so much more powerful when it's really lost in a sea of black, McF's hugs it so close on the sides, takes some of the effect away.

DarkArtist81
08-31-2008, 11:05 PM
I agree... the hood in the Mcf was waaay too small for my liking too, and I didn't like the pose either.

I'm really excited about doing the costume, I really want to make it look as good as I possibly can. Should be a very cool addition to my Horror lineup.

Also the mcfarlane figure has a sash around it's waist, not film accurate. In the film the gown just flowed from head to feet. The sash's hanging from the arms are wrong as well.

The Spencer doll is a better reference if you have it.

I used co-run Moviemaniacs.net and I can tell you that Mcfarlane did not have the license to scream. The figure is based on a store bought unlicensed version of the costume. The first wave did include a mini scream poster but when Dimension films got wind of it they issued and cease and desist order.

Mcfarlane was forced to replace the poster with a generic photo of the figure.

I also finished a "quickie" head... I had this old Mace Windu sculpt laying around and wanted to do something with it, so I added hair to it and made a Jules from Pulp Fiction. I just slapped it on that body really quick before making a mold of it, just to show you guys. Even the paint is sloppy, just a quick base coat and hair color to show what it will look like. If anybody does want a cast or a painted cast, just let me know. They will certainly be available. Even full figures if desired.

Well, I'm sure whatever you come up with will work out, just got my gears turning when I saw the mask free floating there, I started thinking what if that got glued to a hood like comes with Takara Batman.

Awesome. All I know is that if you sell the Ghost Face figures I am buying one.
I am actually building up that many different horror characters I have barely any room left !. I am thinking of picking one Jason and one Freddy and selling the rest.
It will be hard but theres not much I can do. Its what actually stopped me from ordering both of your awesome Jasons.

My cousin who says all this collecting is stupid yesterday said as I was looking at your Myers , and I quote " Now thats cool ".
He never says anything like that !. :lol:rock

That sounds like an awesome idea. This will be a tough one to tackle I would imagine. I would be worried about the mask weighing down or coming off if its simply glued on to fabric. Maybe I'm being paranoid.
Either way I know Josh will make this awesome :rock

Thanks a lot guys! Yeah... LOTS of work here. Sean, you are on to something there. I might do a cast and try that on a hood somewhere.. see if it's feasible at all. I worry about it possibly coming off with wear, but it might be able to work. I'll give it a good test. :rock

And Obsolete... Yours is NEXT! :D

Whoohoo! One of the first Rorschachs. The Jules looks great - judging from the recast on eBay, your sculpted hair is much much better.

Having seen that head for so long as Mace Windu, I can't look at it without seeing that part and thinking, "Hand me my lightsaber, it's the one that says 'Bad Mother ^^^^er' on it."

I did some more torso work on Maximus, some minor stuff... base coats and the like. Will take a break from that to do more heads and such the rest of this week... But thought I would share. :D

The sculpt was a private commission done by Andy Bergholtz.

Thanks guys! Yeah, as Banny said... the Maximus was sculpted by Andy B. Really amazing statue too, I'm LOVING painting it.

And thanks for the praise for Jules, I just got so tired of painting that crappy head that Diver4 on Ebay offers... just had to do something about that. Now if I could just find a decent Travolta sculpt to alter, we'd be set. :lol
