So glad to hear from you Josh...

I know it's a rough pass but you will come out on top bro. I am sure.

Your place looks great ! I am glad to see you settling in.

I am sure you will be attacking your stuff next week. It's the way you are.

We are here for you.

You and your pieces are well worth the wait.

Glad to see you back.

I have next week off from school and have yet to find employment, so I will be painting all week to take my mind off of it. :lol

[/IMG]

I just noticed the Gator helmet and saw the Gainesville location. Are you at UF? My wife and I just graduated from there a couple of years ago. They do have a pretty good job placement thing at the student union. i'd check with them the company that hired me from school would sometimes setup with the union to go there and do interviews so if you missed the career fairs there are normally still companies coming you just have to be a little proactive about it.

If it's any encouragement a lot of companies do wait until l the last minute to make their hiring decisions. They seem to be oblivious to students concerns with time frames when it comes to hiring.

Also if you are at Santa Fe you can allways sneak into the career fairs and such on campus. when i was sent to recuirt there I'd always have one or two come to the booth and even once in a while students from UNF would drive all the way down.

Awesome displays and looks very very neat compared to my workspace!

Is it just a litte paint chip on the top on the tip of the nose? I've had two (normal) figures like that and I was able to get the paint close enough that it isn't noticeable unless you look extremley close at in direct light. So I think you could probably do it just fine since I paint like a toddler.

Got ya. Thnx guys. I think I can find some blood red close enough to do it myself.

Should be an easy fix Josh, the color is a dark brown color.. kinda reddish. So you can just dab it on there to fix it, smooth with your fingers. I did the same thing before, when I had my first PZ. I think that figure had that issue quite a bit. :lol

The Josh
03-16-2008, 02:32 PM
Cool! Will look for kind of a reddish/brown type color.

Cool! Will look for kind of a reddish/brown type color.

But remember the best way to match up the color is to mix your own colors. Obviously the closer from the bottle the better, but a straight out of the bottle match is near impossible I think.

Hey guys! I have LOTS to show now... busy week. I finally finished the first Joker custom, tons of work went into that one. The shirt was an odyssey all on it's own. Also finished the Rods, Bonds are almost there, Anakin, and my Two Face prototype is done except for his right eye.

I will be busy the rest of the week too, so those awaiting PM replies.. please be patient... I promise I will get back to you guys when I can. Just need to crank out these heads.

First, the regular heads... next post.. Joker.

Your Two-Face looks great. It was kinda hard to see all of the details in the burned side prior to painting, but of course you really made it look fantastic after painting it.

I still can't get over your Joker. It is great. I like how you even noticed he has a blueish suit jacket underneath the purple trench coat thingy. The only think I think needs to be changed is the pants need to be more purple (and pinstripes if you are feeling up to it).

Thanks guys! It means a lot to me, your feedback. Mikey, I especially appreciate the kind words. To be mentioned in the list of classic customizers like that is truly humbling. The Joker was one of the most fun figures I have ever made, and a challenge from start to finish.

I still wish the suit would have taken more of the dye. I had to dye it 3 times and still just got it looking greyish-purple. It was a pain. The problem is that most suits on the market are made from synthetic materials and don't take dye all that well. Thankfully the coat took. All Cotton there.

Dent is finally done now too, just finished the suit last night. So I should be revealing that as soon as I can snap some photos. :rock

Hello Da,

Great work on your Joker, very cool. I tried dying a few already made suits also and had no luck. I finally had to bite the bullet and sew them up myself. The clothes did not come perfect, but it alright for now.

Gotta ask though, where dd you get those gloved hands? I got some the other day but they looked to big for a sideshow body.

Anyways great work, and thanks for the headsculpt, without it, I wouldnt started that custom.

So check the commerce section... I'm going to have to sell some stuff QUICK if I want to keep my car. Please help me out if you can...

And if anyone wants a Joker figure, I will certainly lift my limit restrictions and make you one.

Les thought I should post these pics in Josh's thread. Its his Ledger Joker sculpt that Les painted for me (he owed me a free repaint so Josh graciously let Les do the honors, and Les told me just what an honor that was). He and I are both greatful for the opportunity. Now with Josh going to be working on some article's of the Joker's clothing for me, I am convinced no offically licensed Joker item will compair to these two's amazing tribute to Heath.

Damn, Les. You make me blush! I'm both proud and humbled. You guys do so much more varied work than I do. I'm happy being a painter and a kitbasher, but you and Josh actually sculpt and cast these days, and it's just astonishing.

I'm proud to be the first customizer on this board, but you and Josh are formidable, both together and seperately, and I'm so pleased you found each other, and that so many have joined us in this amazing hobby. I'm not sure I'd still be here if this community of customizers hadn't grown to include you both, and artists like Hurricane and Darren.

Even my Xbox 360 has betrayed me, 2 days ago I got the red ring of death and it doesn't work anymore. So yeah, life is crapping on me something fierce.

But I'm painting my A$$ off. Last night I finished a Ripley, Sidious, Faramir, 3 Jokers, Krycek, and others. I will be making severe headway on the Joker figs and the very very late projects on my shelf in the coming weeks. Lots to do. I'm trying to finish all of my headpaints, and won't be taking any more orders... I'm thinking that it's time to hang up my repainting duties. It's getting too far out of my control anymore and I can't really keep up with it.

But do not fret, I will be doing customs. FULL customs. 100% creative figures all my own. Hell, I might even sculpt. They will be offered here as well as online, and this thread will be a place for me to show my own repaints as well as a behind the scenes look into the making of the future DA creations.

Be prepared to be mystified by the strangeness of my future figures, many are in the works and will push the boundaries of good taste. :lol

But consider this my "retirement announcement"... I'm officially OUT of the repainting business.

Lots of great guys here who do it anyway, including Mikey. TONS of talent that can take up the slack.

I just want to thank all of those who have stuck with me this far, those who have helped me hone my skills to the level they are now. I'm eternally thankful to everyone here for making me the painter I am today. :duff

I totally understand where you are coming from by doing this. It's great that you used to offer commissions, but sometimes when you keep doing the same thing over and over you start to lose that certain interest in this hobby; this way, you can now focus on doing customs that you want to do as well as have much more time to put into them.

Although I do hope that if you decide to start sculpting, please sell recasts to us! :lol

Anyways, good luck Josh. I hope to see more amazing customs from you :rock

It saddens me to hear that you announced your "repainting" retirement but it is totally understandable. Life takes us through many ups and downs and there are so many different routes to choose from. I'll consider this just a detour and hope you will be back repainting in the future. This hobby is in your blood so you will need to every so often come back just for a repaint or two. If not for yourself, for us Freaks who need your customizing.

I look forward to receiving my customized Vampire Buffy and all her bloody tools. At least I know I'm one of the lucky ones to have one (or more) of your custom works.

I wish you the best of luck and will always be here to support you. I have learned a lot from you and have enjoyed watching you from the mere boy who asked Customikey many questions to the customizing guru you have now become.

Thanks, Josh, for not only sharing your work but sharing the how to with members on this board.

wow, quite a shock. i'd been seeing your work for a while but it never clicked that it was all darkartist stuff. when i realised, i was pretty taken aback that another great figure artist was out there. i absolutely love your work. i'm disappointed that you're quitting, but at the same time feel your relief and know it's a necessary thing. i hope at some point in the future, whether it be a year or 10 years down the line you have the time to resume commissions and it be on your terms, i.e. there isn't a feeling of pressure with each repaint.

in the mean time, i am uber excited about the upcoming customs after seeing your joker, moreso than any impending releases by any 1/6 company.

one last thing, the 3 custom artists i've had the pleasure to deal with have been 3 of the most amazing people i've met on these forums - talented, friendly, humble and so down-to-earth despite being godly in the art of figure painting. that is the most awesome quality to have so thanks for that josh (and les and darren)! your time is precious and you still gave it to deal with people patiently and with enthusiasm.

:lol

Love you, Josh. Cheers.

:lol That is freakin hilarious Mike... Love it. :rotfl

Thanks a million to everyone who has commented. It's really a hard decision to make, took me a few months to really decide what to do. I DO love the hobby and I doubt it will be the end for me, but it's just getting to be really hard to keep track of not only the stuff I already have, but what's what, where it needs to go, updating everyone and not screwing up the paint in the process... It's mind numbing. :google

I think that once my plate is clear and I'm able to have a job again... I can decide on how I want to move forward. Maybe eventually I can squeeze in 2 or 3 repaint commissions every two months, to still help everyone out and still be able to do repaints.

The biggest factor is simply the desire to make full customs of my own, to just let my mind go crazy and make some truly strange custom figures. And not be weighed down by the huge workload that I will never be fully done with. I have a million "in work" projects of my own that are just waiting for me to get to. Hell, I still haven't painted figures that have been on my shelf waiting for it for months. So I want more time to devote to that.

Creativity, as I once explained it to Les, is like a plastic cup of water... Every time you spend some of it on a head or whatever, a hole is punched into that cup. And once you have 60 holes punched, no matter how much creativity you have flowing, you can't keep that cup full enough to really have fun with your skills. You're always rushing against the clock to keep it full. And as you finish a head and patch up a hole in your figurative cup, another commission is made and another hole takes it's place.

I'm just looking to get a new cup.. :lol

You guys rule, thank you all for being so supportive and understanding during this rough time. No internet, being behind and now this.. I'm really honored to know you all. :bow

Great way to describe things Josh. It is tough when you're a creative person who gains so much by personally using your creativity as well as professionally. Sometimes, the very thing that is your outlet becomes a demon in your life, it no longer brings joy and freed but rather feels like a weight you can't get rid of. Like Michael Jordan said when he retired, the first time, when you don't have that drive anymore because of a situation, it's time to walk away. You have a great gift, but it's like a child and you're time doing business is like being a parent out on the road all the time. You need to spend time with your child now and nurture it. I for one look forward to watching your child grow up. Keep on rocking dude :rock

I do understand that one, Josh. And do remember your analogy well.
And, being tired, and really loaded down with repaints, has indeed slowed my own free time some, but you know what recently happened to me as a result of all this recent workload?

Something wonderful!

Sometime back, maybe only a few weeks ago now, but I can't tell, as I have been in such a deep paint routine for so long it seems...anyway, I learned something for myself that came unexpected.

While feeling overwhelmed with all I had yet to do, I sat here one day, down, tired, frustrated, and realized in the middle of one headpaint, that after all this "practice", just like you would at any sport or task or whatever, that I was improving. And it excited and stimulated my need to do even better.

But it does get tiring when one is down or needs rest from it. I would know also.

So I say, take time off. Focus on your wants, needs, thoughts, creative juices, let them flow. Do your own thing for a while. Because, I think, rather than a cup, which is a limited vessel with finite walls and a bottom, and can be filled, that we as creative people, are more like a faucet, or the water valve, over the cup, we control the flow. What keeps us down sometimes, is the knowledge that we are not the water. We are never the water. Our talent or skills or whatever is not the water, or creative source, that is the realm of someone, something else, God, to which we are not privy, but which we can only tap every now and then, and sometimes at a cost to us, especially if tapped daily for long periods of time.

But, we have the choice, be the valve that decides how much we can experience, or be the cup that simply holds the water.

Just slow the flow for a while, and let your cup, with it's holes, drain, and get your new cup.
My advice for the next phase, moderate your creative outflow, and simply, get a bigger cup! :D

You'll be back, swinging, and kicking some! In all new ways! :rock

And we will be all the prouder of you.

Absolutely. His Wizards return was about continuing to play the game he loved and to help boost a franchise he was investing time and money in. They were a young team and needed a veteran to bring some guidance and it can make a big difference. They're not the Bulls, but they're doing better today than they were pre-Mike.

Thanks a lot guys! Two Face was really just my thoughts on what the character should look like. I took the concept and ran with it.

I cut a head in half and sculpted the damage, cut a suit in half, dyed it and sewed it back together. I wanted him to be different on each side, but not too different. Two Face is still the dominant personality, not Harvey, so I went with more of the Evil side standing out. You can even see it in the damage on the face, the line isn't clean. The burned side has damage that creeps onto the undamaged side of Harveys' face.

I have some replacement guns coming for him though, I want more symmetry. :lol Might even get a ungloved hand for his right side.

So at last I will be able to share pics and empty out my PM box, as well as respond to some folks who have been waiting weeks for an answer from me. That's a good pick me up, makes me feel a good bit better. I miss the internet. :lol

Thank you all for the continuing support guys, and thank you for the great artistic explanation, Les. You hit it right on the money. I'm really just looking for another outlet.

And think of it this way guys, I will not be less of a force here or show less work. It will actually be a more active time for me, a brand new age of DA customs that will raise the bar of my craft and still be offered to you all for purchase. This is just the beginning of a new chapter.

But repaints will always be in my blood. So I expect that it won't end completely. :D

A new beginning is always good as long as you are happy.

More pics!

wow! tow face looks great. Stuff like the boot with knife vs the dress shoe and the two different guns really helps add to the split feeling. i really like those small touchs. and hey i was a little iffy with how the red and black would work vs the black and white but I got to say it really came out sharp and better than a black and white version in my opinion.

Very, very, nice work Josh!
They all rule, but yeah, I love seeing your original Two-face best. In fact, after all the comments, which I agree about, the boot, the off-kilter face scarring, etc., my favorite touch is that oh-so-casual shoe on his right foot! :D Something so relaxed and golf-club about it, it works in total contrast to the rest.

Great work on Palpy too. Love the area around the eyes. A real DA approach to him. Very nice!

DarkArtist81

Thanks guys! Yeah, the boot was one of those sudden artistic gems that come from nowhere. Like a flash of intuition, I knew what needed to be done. And I really love how it turned out.

As for the PM situation, that will be remedied very shortly. I am going to go through and answer them one at a time.

And Sean, yes that is my personal Sidious figure. I am going to do Palpatine soon enough as well. I really wanted him to look creepy. I only wish the sculpt was snarling or grinning, would have made it much more interesting to paint. :rock

Very cool. I like how you worked some dark into the cracks to highlight the skin texture, really helps when he's hooded. I was hoping he was part of your collection, my first thought when I saw it was that he'd make a great master to Sith Obi-Wan, the tones fit together very well.

Buttmunch

Nice job on Sidious, I love your take on him. Especially the darkening around the finger tips!

Two-Face is awesome! Love your take on him,but I have a suggestion or two. Definately use an ungloved right hand. I was going to keep this next one a secret for mine, but I think it is right up your alley. For the left hand, have it burnt and ungloved, and the lower three fingers melted/fused together. That would still leave his trigger finger free, but give him another creepy factor. That is at least what I plan on doing with mine.

Those Jokers look as great as always. Heck if you keep some of those earlier stop ones without Green hair, you could sell them as the "Nurse Joker" headsculpt. (if you have no idea what I said, check the pics on the Dark Knight thread). I would love to see your take on that :lol

PS Don't forget to send me your address when you get to my shirt PM.

I just wanted to re-say how awesome these Jokers are. Having mine in hand now, I just wanted to let everyone know that all of those smear lines are PAINTED individually. There is no natural folds or creases there to help figure out where they go. That is all skill on Josh's part because it really brings out an evil look and expression for the Joker. Still the best Ledger Joker sculpt out there, hands down.

Thanks guys! The smudge was inspiration from Les' take on the sculpt, I saw what he did and the gears started turning. You can see the progression, as I continue to tweak here and there on the painted heads. They will all be smudged I think, I really like it. But each will have a slightly different expression and cracks.

Buttmunch, thank you! It's true... This sculpt is nearly wrinkle free, it's quite a feat to create the cracks and wrinkles from paint alone. :lol

It's all about giving the illusion of depth and variance in tone. :rock

Ok, today I took some time off from commissions... just to ease my mind.. :lol

And I did something that many custom artists have done from time to time to rejuvenate the creative soul... I went "parts-diving" and made a quick custom. Something totally off the wall and made entirely of junk parts, stuff you will never use for anything important. And it was GREAT. I had a blast. And I think it really got me excited for the rest of my commission work, something I sorely needed.

What I am really proud of is the gun, I made that thing entirely out of odd parts of other guns and other random stuff. Oddly enough, the handle and base of the gun was originally a welder from a Colonial Marine figure.

So where is this weird custom figure you ask? Well, here is a peek at it. I'll post better pics tomorrow, and even show you his crazy alien sword. :joy

Yeah, I had an extra David Merrill sculpt I knew I wasn't going to use and decided to make a go with it on this one. :lol

And Zack, you are dead on the money... I was thinking some uber-militaristic alien race that just conquers planets with impunity. Something crazy scary like that.

I went with black skin, with vieny "cracks" in his face, almost like like he has Lava in his veins. I wanted a high contrast look, so I did the white tattoos on the neck and brows. Really just an intimidation thing this race does, almost like the samurai masks back in the day. Just something to make the enemy stop in his tracks for a moment, at least long enough to die. :rock

No, it was haired already. David Merrill from DID. I had one left over and didn't want to just make another SWAT Sam out of him, so I used it here. :lol

But the hair is decent enough, I just painted it black and drybrushed some red and white in there for accent.

And his crazy sword was an odd, yet fun piece. Made from a Tripod that came with the CSM from SSC, legs ripped off. I glued a McFarlane Jason Machete blade to the end and cut up a Buffy Hungamunga axe for the other blades. :lol

Thanks everyone! I'm really happy with Rorschach, my favorite custom of my career so far. A looooong time coming. Can't wait to try and tackle the Comedian. :rock

Tonight I will be showing pics of the upcoming Wesley sculpt (Spenser's), a Joker stand and my 2nd Joker custom (almost done)...

Thanks! Yours will be the next full figure made! This one goes out to Blake... already almost done with the next in line repainted head, for Great1. It's coming much faster now.

And the Wesley heads, tonight I finished the faces and hair on them. Only have to do the eyes tomorrow and they will be fully finished. :rock

Looks good, though the lighting is a bit yellow to get an accurate look at the repaint.

The eyes are nice off to the side like that and give him some personality. Nice job!

I can't wait to repaint this guy myself, though I'm thinking of ditching the assault gear and turning him into a different era Dead.

Thanks a lot man! Tomorrow I will take some daylight shots. My camera always seems to give my late night pics a yellowish hue... It's not that expensive. :lol

Better pics tomorrow. A NOT GREEN 805! :D

I can't wait to see more. I was really looking forward to your 805 repaint and you did not disappoint.

The pose, those eyes, and the bit of blood on his forehead give him the really nice personal DA touch. Me likee! :D

Thanks a lot... I had a blast with this one. I added little age spots on the top of his head, bruising around the injection site one his temple, LOTS of blood, and tried to do a lot of post mortem bruising around the damage. I imagined it as if his jaw was ripped off.

So I added the blood splatters and bruising everywhere. It was fun, and pretty damn quick to get done.

Today was Hell. I've been having huge problems with a guy lately. He paid me to make a set of zombies for him, he paid a few months ago and I started working on the stuff he sent. Later he decided to back out of the deal and requested his money back. I contacted him and asked for his PP address, he emailed me back a week later, angry. He said that I had not contacted him...

I responded again, saying that had already emailed him asking for the addy. I told him that I was sending him the money, and that I didn't appreciate him wasting my time on this commission.

I sent him back $40 of the $50 he paid, stating that I was charging a cancellation fee to reimburse me on the time lost as well as shipping for the items I had gotten for the commission.

He got pissed off and threatened legal action, saying that I was being unfair and not treating him right.

I'm at a loss, am I really wrong here? :banghead

That totally sucks! Sorry to hear about this.....I don't see anything wrong or unfair with you keeping $10 to cover your out of pocket expenses and wasted time. That's just good business sense.....^^^^ him...I can't believe he would threaten legal action for $10......I mean really it's going to cost him a lot more than that to take you to court. I wouldn't worry about...guy is just being a f'n douche.....and if he keeps bothering you, let me know and I"ll whip out my Kurgan sword.....GB will join me and will make it a true Kurgan celebration. :D

Dude that sucks, but in no way do I think you're in the wrong. It's not like he bought something off eBay from you and changed his mind, he comissioned work and you are entitled to some ammount for the work done, particularly if the reason of them backing out is simply not wanting it anymore and has nothing to do with opinion of the quality of your work. You were paid to do a job, made investments on your end to get it done and he stiffed you, 20% for your troubles isn't asking much to me, especially when you're probably still taking a good loss with that.

However, knowing the troubles you've gone through, it might make it easier on your life to just throw him the remainder of the money. In my opinion, avoiding extra aggrivation and possible legal action is well worth the few bucks remaining.

It was bound to happen eventually. That's the price you pay for dealing with the ^^^^heads of the internet.

imo, you did better than I would have in giving most of the guy's money back even after you started work.

I wouldn't be too concerned about some guy who backed out of a $50 deal threatening legal action over a matter of $10. :lol

It sounds as though you may have some serious legal troubles. I am not a lawyer, but I am willing to represent you in the case of Douchy McDoucherton vs. DarkArtist pro bono and assure you this man will never see that 10 dollars.

I don't think you are in the wrong, but it might be a good idea for future dealings to have a standard disclaimer (in case you don't already) up front stating that customs will be done when they are done and that if a person backs out there is a cancellation fee.

You might already have this, but it
