Congrats Josh, on all fronts (except the, er hmm, Game. But I'm a Giants fan so NO mercy from me Bro. :lol) Truth is it could have gone either Way.

But to receive a Cane Vader, that figure has to be the sickest figure on the Planet, there simply is NOTHING like it.

Congrats Bro, on your new home and figs...

and Sean, you are a good man, my Man.

Now on to "other stuff" right Josh? :D

Thanks a lot Sean! I mostly did work on his face and armor... In the face, I really wanted the area around his eyes to be darker as well as the areas on the side of his head where the spikes are. I just wanted him to be a bit more grizzled and such.

It was a lot of fun in the end. I'm really happy with the results. :rock

Yeah, I hear ya but the sculpt is fairly decent I think, and it actually has more articulation than the Med Yoda, but let's face it, it ain't no Med Yoda. :lol

Josh,

As always, nice work. Not only did you capture the perfect menacing facial expression on that Predator, you also captured a bada** stance.

I absolutely love the innocence in Luke's face. You really captured the moment of a young boy's Jedi training.

And last, but not least, I'm very pleased with Buffy's new zombified look.
Excellent! :clap

Luke's expression really does look innocent in those shots.

The eye work and placement really tone down the suprized look that him and Jedi Luke suffer from in their factory paint apps.(and the lack of that crappy white dot that makes the pupils look uneven and just weird)

Awesome work on the pred as well Josh

Thanks a lot guys... I hate that damn white dot too. Les and I have gone over that many times in our discussion... how the White dot just keeps popping up, even though you would think that it would have been phased out ages ago... :lol

I do want to revisit the Elder down the road, just to repaint his body, hands and feet.... So that will be a nice project when the time comes. Luke was fun, I really wanted to do the more hopeful version of the character. Pre-Vader fight, pre-burdened by the weight of his parental heritage.. In comparison to my own Bespin Luke, I wanted him to look miles apart from it... and I am glad to see that I somewhat achieved that goal.

Buffy was just fun, plain and simple. I just hacked her up, sculpted a bit... and went to town. It was just FUN. :rock

More coming soon, this weekend is all about the PAINT! :chew

Great recolor of this set! Having held that head in person, I can say, the color correction got it dead on! Better lighting with that.
And the colors of the "dyed" clothing looks about right. Tricky blue that shirt is, but the rest looks just right. Looks like standard Rit Purple to me.

Good luck with this set Josh. Will be a nice one to see actually finished.

Awesome job Great1!! Yeah, the color is just right...looks fantastic. The pinstripes on the pants will be problematic, but I might just use a ruler and freehand them or something... hard to strip color from an existing pinstripe suit and then dye it purple without losing the stripes.

But it is coming along, just waiting on suit sets...

Haven't been able to browse all the pages, but you have some great work here. It is cool to see the beginning and the stages you have progressed thru to your current state. I am starting into the bashing scene, and looking to do my own painting and sculpting work; Seeing your work from the start to now definitely helps me see what I can do in the future.

Thanks guys... Moxie, I know EXACTLY how you feel. When I first arrived, Customikey was the king of all repaints here and I was in awe of his work. Daily I would come and see what he could do, every single time... just amazed at what was possible.

It all started out innocently enough with a desire to fix my figures and make them look more real.... Now it is a huge business for me and more importantly, a creative outlet.

You should go with it and just let it happen, you will not regret picking up the brush. :rock

And Josh, sadly... I haven't even been able to start on Obi yet. I have a couple of items that have been on my shelf for months that need IMMEDIATE attention. But, you Clone is just about ready... putting the final touches on him tomorrow. And I will get started on Obi as well, just at least get his hair glued on and the base coat for the skin finished.

Just busy busy busy around here... :lol

Thank YOU Venny, for being so nice and for having the guts to go for it. Art lives within us all, and our personalities come out in our work as we progress in skill. The Anakin you have on your shelf is a small piece of me, something that helped me to oust inner demons.

In your work, you will find therapy, joy and mental exercise. It's really an experience quite it's own, especially once you delve into 100% creative, non portrait work.

I am very excited to see you going down this path and cannot wait to see where it takes you. Welcome aboard Venny. :duff

Looks sweet! But I only count 11 heads, where is #12?

And the more I see your Joker, the more I actually just like the outfit he is in now. Kinda like Batman's protosuit, he hasn't quite fine-tuned his likes to his suit yet. The photoshopped image shows though you have all of the right pieces just waiting to be dyed. When (if) you do the pinstriping, I'd be interesting in knowing how to do it for mine as well.

Thanks for the compliments on the photoshop image guys! I had some spare time and just couldn't wait to see the results on Josh's Joker.

I didn't do the pinstripes on purpose because it would have been a little on the ticky side to get them to look natural since there is so many waves in the pants.

Nice to see you will be attempting the pinstripes Josh, will you also be doing the hexagon pattern on his shirt?

Don't sweat the Yoda Bro! Please! If its giving you hell. Maybe weather the outfit, do the cane. I like the sculpt, just the paint apps seemed light/faded in color and I wanted the eyes to pop better. Maybe drybrush a few layers on it to get the color toned correctly and just repaint the eyes. :D Easy peasy.

And remember some sweat on Luke. Btw, I love what you did with my Luke. I also want to use him for eventual Vader battle poses but I think that look will also be ideal. He was still innocent then too. Not yet a Jedi.

Cool Paul. I actually just finally got the skin tone on Yoda done, and I am very happy with the results. So he will be done today! And I can add the sweat to Luke for sure, since I have yet to do any gloss on the eyes yet. And I can finish this set TODAY! :rock

Woo-Hoo! :woo

:chew:chew:chew

Take some pics Bro! It will be the definitive and ONLY 1:6 Custom DA Dagobah Luke. And it will kick unparalleled ass as a Besbin Luke too!

Yeah, baby!

PS: I stole some nice pebbles from the new Loft Building across the street (garden bed) so I'm ready to rock! :rock

Oh yeah bro, I have it in hand.. Just got done ordering the rest of the clothing. On suits alone, for the 3 figures I am doing so far... the price for parts alone was about $250 total! :google

Can I ask where you are ordering the suits from? I have some customs that need good (not Ken doll which is in abundance at Target/TRU) mens' suits.

Love love love Luke Bro. :D

I couldn't ask for more, amazing work, it is SO Mark it rocks. The eye fix and expression makes a HUGE difference.... You brought him to life. and I love the shot composition.

But Yoda looks WAAAY too dark to me Bro, ESB Yoda that is. I should have articulated this to you better so I'll take the hit on this. Maybe its the pics but I've always seen him in my mind's eye like this...

More of a ming green or a patina green I guess. Much lighter. Can we closer match this color tone? Please Bro?

It's cool... I just redid the tones a bit.. I don't have pastels, not really happy with the grainy texture it gives a portrait. But Yoda is a very hard color to get right, the color is an odd one. :lol

I did a bit of a lightening rework, let me know if I am close.

That Shock Trooper looks amazing. I like the official one that was done, but I like the one you painted up alot more, think its the battle damage look that it has....especially on the visor. ST's have been my favorite of all the clones, with only Commander Bly ahead of them.

Josh, I was just wondering what brand of paints you use? I have a ton of Citadel paints and brushes, which is supposed to be used for painting WH 40K miniatures. Do you use this brand of paints and brushes? Or do you mainly just airbrush stuff?

DarkArtist81
02-19-2008, 11:15 PM
I usually use whatever brushes I can use really, as long as they work for acrylic paint. For paints I am pretty much a die hard Model Master Acryl user. I sometimes use the cheap wal mart paint, but mostly for dirt and grime since it dries chalky. Never really had any experience with the Citadel paint, is it enamel or Acrylic?

Thanks guys! Yeah, my Master Chief and I designed the look together. It used to be a black tail with a knight painted there. Years ago they had red bloodstripes on a grey tail but you could only make the "show bird" look good. The regular planes in the squadron would look pretty plain in comparison. So we came together and thought up a design with combat grey down the body of the jet, on the top, Combat grey verticle stabilizers with either red or light grey stripes. And after 9/11 we designed the american flag decal with the black knights around it. Pretty cool experience.. here are some pics.

Awesome Two-Face! Man! You are giving me serious thoughts about getting my 1939 one done sooner than later!
But seriously, that is too cool. You ARE gonna mold and cast that I hope!?
(You really should make your own original zombies too! I mean, your own LINE of Zombies! Not like anyone owns the names or properties! Just generic Zombies....food for thought....)

Anyway, great stuff!
And love the plane art too Josh. I remember you telling me about that on one of our visits. Cool to see it.

(And I liked Top Gun. Wasn't NUTS about it, but saw it at the theatre in an air base town, Savannah, GA, when it came out and loved the experience of seeing it! So 80's and so cool! See...I LOVED the 80's! Best time of my life! I was in art college, the music ruled, and it wasn't so damn grim and black and downer and all then, but was upbeat. LOVED that decade! My favorite BY FAR of any I've lived so far. :rock )

The head for Two face is from a just released Dragon figure, Rudolf Mertens. I sawed it nearly in half, filled the head with Sculpey and began carving away. So far I am finding that I was heavily influenced by Tim Sale's rendition of the character, with that almost sinewy look to the burnt side. Like the acid had splashed and burned as it dripped down his face, causing the wound to have lines gouged out... almost like rivers drawn on a map. And of course, the bulging eyeball. :lol

I AM going to mold this sucker too, so expect that down the line. AND I am also going to make my very own zombies that will be casted and available eventually, my own little line of madmen that I can sell wherever.. :rock

Hey Josh I got a question for ya. How do you bake heads like Two-Face where you are adding to an already existing sculpt? Like what temperature, what do you put it on, etc. etc.

I tried two times before, one never cooked and the other overcooked. You seem to have it down though.

Well, first thing.. When you are sculpting onto the old head, you have to really press it on there. Make sure it's rubbed on the best you can, so that it kinda bonds with the plastic when you bake it. I bake my heads at 260 degrees, on a pizza plate or tinfoil. Usually for about 14-15 minutes. After that it should be pretty solid.

Love the Tomcat design, Josh. Too bad they've retired those birds.

Yeah, I miss my Tomcats... :monkey2

And good news on the Anakin, it is almost done! All that it needs are the eyes, I was actually just going to contact you and ask again what eyes you wanted. I seem to have lost that record, and I wanted to be sure on it. I think it was the Sith eyes with the tears, but I wanted to be 100% before I did them.

Good thing is, that the eyes will be a quick job. So it will be ready very very shortly. :rock

Thanks man, I wanted to show the structure of the burnt side. Just so everyone could see how it would look, I took great care to be sure that the burned side matched the facial dynamics of the other side. Bone structure and eye placement, all that good stuff. :duff

That Shocktrooper looks great! The color seems a bit too dark to be film accurate, but I like it better. In those shots it almost looks like he was painted with blood. That to me just screams DA's work if nothing else. I do think it makes the Shocktrooper more sinister looking.

holy crap , thats awesome !! :rock

Yes it is. :rock

Understatement at the least... but oh so true !

Thank you EVERYONE... for not only keeping this thread alive but for also being so cool to post pics of these recent projects.

I also want to let everyone know I am still alive and well, just insanely busy. I'm looking for work and not finding it, trying to get things hooked up at the house and still finishing up this semester of school... so it's rough. :lol

As for those awaiting paint projects, know that this weekend I am confined at the house and will be devoting my first normal weekend to you guys. So I will be painting my butt off for all of you and hopefully have a full Joker to show off very soon as well. Thank you all. You guys are the best. :duff

We are here for you Josh ! Hope all is well and works out for you.

Looking forward to your completed Joker as well as one of my own !

Hey Michael,
I waited 3 months and just got my stuff last week. And I was one of the first to ever commission work from Josh so please exercise patience my friend and you will be rewarded. Josh will take care of you. Plus he had to move and is not linked online yet.

I'm sure he'll get back to soon, so try to give him a break.

Conan, I doubt very much its because he's ignoring you

If you expect the figures or repaints within a 2 month turn around (and youve not had a confirmed correspondant saying you will get a 2 month turn around) then your probably in for a bit of a shock

Darkartist is probably like a few of the customisers on these boards with a 6 - 12 month turnaround, I know at least 2 other customisers who are in this situation

Given the quality and expertise of Darkartist I very much doubt he can do normal turn arounds in anything less than 6 months

He is that much in demand

I may have misread the situation, and if I have then I apologise for butting my nose in.

But it wont be a case of him ignoring you, knowing the work and the way he has dealt with clients in the past on these boards it wont be a case of him taking your money and swindling you, so dont worry

and Im sure once he has read your post he will contact you

either to refund your money or explain the situation

1) He hasn't had much access to the internet since he moved and they are wiring their new house.

2) When working with customizers patience is usually the best policy. I know guys who have been waiting on custom projects for far longer than 2 months. I myself am working with a custom (not from Josh) that thus far has taken 15 months.

Yeah, Conan, as a fellow customizer, I had to step in and say something on his behalf here...
He has had a lot happen in the last few months, got married last year, starting college again, and now, moving to a new home and all that comes with that.
Like the guys say, customizing is a long term business. Anyone who knows us knows this. It is not to say we don't feel it though, and hate it when we run behind.

I can say, as one who has many customers waiting still for stuff, some even a year or so now, that if you can give him the time he needs to get back online, and to you, he will! :rock We look after our folks!

You will be well treated! He is the best! He cares.
Trust me on this.

Josh is a stand up guy, and given all his recent things going on in his life give him some time.

And like some have mentioned, 2 months isnt that long to wait at all. I am going on a year with a custom project.

Patience is the best way to go when it comes to customizing.

I agree with everyone that has stepped in and spoken for Josh. He's been very busy in his personal life as well as in his professional customizing life. Just be patient. I'm going on four months waiting for my custom figure but I'm being very patient 'cause I know it's going to turn out awesome. Every so often, Josh will throw you a bone and take of pic of the work-in-progress. The entire process takes time... Again, just be patient.

Josh is well worth the wait. I had a few things painted by him last year, and now he has a few more items from me. His work is outstanding, so give him time. You won't be disappointed.

Josh is A1 class ! Give him time. This is his side job and hobby. Not his main source of income.

But his work is great. He is a great guy. And he is will always hook you up.

Thanks a lot guys.. I've been working with Conan for a while, and I think he is just gonna cancel his orders. It's ok though, I understand. I've been more behind this past month than I have been in a long long time. But good news is coming right up...

I'm getting closer to being finished with a LOT of work. All the Serlings, Bonds, and a long awaited custom Buffy Zombie are nearing completion. Also working on a BUNCH of other items, so should be done very soon.

I have next week off from school and have yet to find employment, so I will be painting all week to take my mind off of it. :lol

Here are a few pics of the works in progress and a return to my backbreaking original paint table...
