Here's my in work Joker. Now remember... this is not finished and is more a classic style Joker with a bit of Nolan stylings. I WILL be doing a Ledger Joker soon as well, but this will be my practice. :D

You seem to incorporate elements from almost every Joker I can think of in that one head! It looks like a cross between the Nicholson one and the new DK one, as well as odes to so many others including the Batman Dead End one. VERY COOL! :rock

:lol Yeah... it was just crazy this holiday and really put me in a rough spot. Damn Hobby Lobby has to be so far away.
Also, some news on the horizon.... I am going to be starting college here on January 7th, so repaints might have to shut down completely for a while. I can do whole figure requests or special projects if you guys contact me first... But I think my repainting days might be over for at least 6 months to a year until I figure out my schedule and how hectic things might be.
I DO have some surprises up my sleeves for the coming months though, and I know you guys will be excited to see them when the time comes. But to dedicate myself to original work I know I will have to focus on that and stop taking as many repaints.
So bear with me guys, things are going to get tight for me here... But I will keep you informed.

Good luck Josh, I finished college a couple years ago and couldn't wait to be done. I'm glad for what I learned in my art classes, but I never had the type of mind to absorb and enjoy subjects I had no interest in, which was everything else haha. I lay this down not to upset but to make you think a bit more. Most degrees are worthless now. I grew up with the notion that graduating from a University with a bachelors of something is infinitely better than not...well that's just plain bull. As a person who has been there and done that and is quite frankly a little bit jaded at the world and it's crappy politics, I say choose the "right" degree. In the end you have to do it for the right reasons but you also have to live with yourself and the time you may have "wasted"
Learning is obviously never a waste but the money you dump into the deep pockets of the already stinkingly rich Deans and administrators is, especially when you don't get a fiscal return on your investment. You know how people are always saying "if only I knew what I know now then" well I am telling you now- get an accounting degree or something profitable and usable. I know a lot of students starting out have the romantic notion that the major they have chosen is the best thing for them and money isn't all that important in the end....well it is. With a better job you can have more time off to do the things you want, like be with your family and more money to live comfortably.
The soapbox is now clear. Anyone else care to take the podium?:D
I just re-read my post and wanted to add, I really didn't mean to imply that getting a degree in history or any other field is a waste of your time or effort. What I was saying just to keep beating the point to death is that, if I could go back I would choose to do things differently I think.
DarkArtist81
12-27-2007, 05:10 AM
I see your point Rory... But for me.. A desk job is what I am getting away from now, any degree that deals with numbers like accounting or business would be death to me... simply because I struggle so much with Math. Hence my checkbook. :lol
It has taken me around 8 years to decide on a topic of study, many instances of flip flopping back and forth from subject to subject and I'll tell you why I went this route. I was originally going to go for Graphic Design, but the competitiveness of the field and the amount of GD grads who do not get work really worried me... Especially now that I am starting to try and start a family. Art was my passion and I attempted many times to go that way, but something told me that it would not work out.
The way I see it, I will always have my art. I can still pursue a career artistically, I will continue to create figures and still bring my portfolio to conventions and hope to one day get Sideshow to just hire me already.. ;)
But for now, this path seems right to me.. And I think that I can make this work and do good things with that degree. But then again that's just me.

The most important thing is to do what you love, even if it hardly pays at all. My Dad is an actor, and for years we hardly had any money, no car, and a really small house. Still, he knew that the most important thing was getting a solid education--it's saved us time and again. Now we actually aren't much better off than that, but you'll never find a happier man because he does what he loves, loves what he does, and has a wife and seven children who love him more than anything. All the other stuff about security and luxury really doesn't matter at all compared to that--a whole and happy family can happen even with no money at all.

The way I look at it, you like customizing. That's your passion. Get a degree where you can make good money even if it isn't a career that "lights your fire". That way you won't have to worry about cash but can still do the things you enjoy the most. My 2 cents anyway.

I appreciate all the kind comments guys. It should all work out in time, I think that once I am at least in school I will be able to refocus if necessary. Biggest thing is just to find something that I can do day to day and still handle bills and such. :lol
But, back to the art... Tonight I did a few things... Since I am so low on paints, I did some sculpting. I got a head that looks enough like Heath Ledger for me to make a decent Dark Knight Joker head for a custom.. So I gave it my best shot.. still needs fine tune work.. but I think I did a decent job. Also did some Zombie wound work to Vamp Buffy. Also posting some pics of the finished Red Skull I did for Metaphorge...

Thanks a ton Mooncat! It was a hard find, that is for sure... I had to track down a head that was close enough to work for me, and after that point.. it was just diving head first into the sculpting duties to try and get it as close as possible to Heath as the Joker. I really can't wait to paint him up and hopefully by the end of this month I should have him cast as well.
Tonight I actually finished my other Joker custom, a vision of what the Joker would look like if envisioned by myself. I will be tackling other Batman Rogues and eventually Batman himself with my own take on each of the characters.
So here he is, My Joker. Only unfinished area would be that I have a vest coming for him and will do something more with the hands too....

These 3 pics say it all. If anyone here has ever seen the Batman Beyond movie, Return of the Joker, Bruce Wayne breaks it down like this. He says there were a lot of villains in his time but there was only one that truely scared even the Batman. The Clown Prince of Crime himself, and I think you have captured the spirit, maybe even the soul of the Joker.
Needless to say but great job.

You did an INCREDIBLE job on the face! (And BTW, it is varied from the DK Joker in that Ledger's eyes are so dark brown, and your's are more sinisterish to me...but I digress...), he is obviously a variant on the DK theme though...and what a nice job it is!

:lol Yep, Batty from the end of Blade Runner. I recently re-watched the film and was just hit right in the face by Rutger's performance, especially at the end of the film. Such a magnificent character and death scene. Reminded me why I love that film so much.
As for Ledger, it's coming... just slowly. I am still in desperate need of the suit and parts, that are coming eventually. And put the painting on hold to get done with all of these commissions before starting back on personal projects. But it should get moving here sooner or later. Thanks a lot bro. I knew it was going to you, and I really wanted it to be special. Wait until you see the eyes in hand... That paint I used really made it look insane, like it was still wet long after it dried. I'm still amazed at it, really hope I can replicate that. :lol

Great work Josh, Love your clones. That is a tough pattern and I respect your job on it.
And I am working on that same Hanks head now, for the first time, so your paint is a great resource for me. Tremendous job you did on it. That is one amazing sculpt. Just astonishing really. A bit intimidating to paint too. I mean, you HAVE to live up to that sculpt.

Last night the tragic death of Heath Ledger struck me hard. I was in a dark mood all night, dealing with the loss of an up and coming actor whom I deeply respected. When I sat down to paint last night, I really couldn't even force myself to lift my brush.
I saw a slew of heads before me and just didn't feel it happening. And then I saw my own Ledger Joker head, already attached to a body, staring back at me. I knew what had to be done. In tribute to Heath, I was determined to finish the paint up and honor him with something positive in this dark time....
So here it is... My tribute to Heath...Dark Knight Joker. (the clothes are temporary, just place holders for now.)

I think you and I, as well as the other artists around here are in a fortunate position to have our art as an outlet for our feelings, I can't imagine having to feel things and face situations helpless to deal with it. At least we can pick up our brush or our camera or mouse and create and let go of it all and take ourselves away from our ills.
Once again, great paint job Josh, you turned a non Ledger sculpt into Heath Joker most beautifully. Given the right lighting to match TDK, I'd swear you'd fight to figure out if that's a figure or him.
Great work for a great actor!

Well done Bro.
I couldn't work (write) yesterday either, my mind kept wandering to Heath, never got more than a half scene done all day. Today is not much better. Seems like this was at least good therapy as your mind was focused.
I think it's difficult for many to comprehend what I'm saying, but other Artists may understand. It's not just about being distracted or shocked by the tragic news, it's about constantly being drawn to the inner soul of a fellow gifted Artist I respect in my Industry, and about the creative light that was extinguished in HIS Art more than anything else...
Anyway, Congrats Josh. I think I know where your head was at.

You are so right on the money Paul, that was exactly where I was at last night and most of today... I just kept thinking about it. It was coming from a mutual artistic respect. He chose roles that I too would have chosen, for the most part, and was just torn apart to hear of his passing. I had lots of respect for him and was looking forward to watching his career blossom here in the coming years. This bit of therapy helped me get through a bit of that, and also to honor him...
Roy, I really appreciate the kind words bro. I mean that. It's humbling... I just try to help everyone as I too would like to be helped... It's just my nature. Thank you for being so cool back in kind. :duff
And thanks to everyone who commented, this is one I am really proud of.. And when the time comes, I will let you guys know what will be done as far as casting and such...

Things will slow down a bit in a few weeks though, I'm moving... Most of my collection is going into storage and I will only do a small amount of paint work weekly... But that will only be for about a month and we should be out of Therese' parents house and into our own place. :duff
Awesome news Josh, so does this include "other" WIP Commishes?

If you still plan on going for teaching, make sure your certification is good no matter where you move. I know that is way down the line, but it is a pain if you don't think about it in advance.

Josh, if you come up to Mass, we'll have to meet up, we can start a little shop up here, you do the work and I'll run the website and images :rock

Today, as I was doing other head work... I finished a long standing project, something that I will be offering for sale in the commerce forum. Connery Bond. The hands are not yet painted to match, so ignore them. :lol

No, I have sent 2 emails and have yet to hear a thing. I don't know what the Hell is going on anymore, I really don't know what to think. :monkey2
And Josh! You will be happy to know that the Shock is almost done.. So you will have it very very soon. I can't wait to get it to you!

Are those light lines supposed to make the hair look transparent, like it's the top of his head you can see?

The hairline is to simulate the transparent effect of a normal hairline. Something I learned from Les. :rock

I'd give them a call dude, sometimes emails don't go through or they can look up a status for you, I was in the dark about my Power Loader til I called and the girl I spoke with gave me the 411.

I'll give them a call... if anything it might shed some light on it.
Last time I got a response, they were trying to say that I was in the wrong because my billing address is my old address and not my current one. I tried to explain that my current address was temporary, so I didn't change it. My shipping address has been updated for a long time at SSC, so I didn't expect it. She told me she was trying to get UPS to locate the package and reroute it to me, but that was in early January... :monkey2

Hey, Josh. I posted comments yesterday but were lost when the site went down.
I just wanted to congratulate you on your Connery Bond. He looks dashing and you managed to capture his essence perfectly.
Congrats on your move and hopefully, you'll be back on track with your commissions soon. I'd love to see more close-up pics of Anguish before you send him home.
In the meantime, I'll wait patiently for Vampire Buffy.

Hello everyone... Update here.. And the reason why I am sooo incredibly behind. For those that do not know yet, I am moving... only a few towns over, but moving nonetheless. So those awaiting shipments or commissions, know that it is coming... but will be a bit delayed.
Also, the financial situation is bearing down on me. Thanks to full time College classes, and consequently not enough working hours, I only make about $150 every two weeks now. At least until the GI Bill and Financial Aid start rolling in... so that is SEVERELY straining my spending. And the reason I have been selling so much... Just to be able to afford the last things I had coming from SSC this month and the bills... So it's been a close one. And with commissions drying up, it also hurts.
That said, as far behind as I am... I don't want to add too much and put everyone in a long holding pattern. :monkey2
But good news on the horizon... Once we move, the costs will be lower and I will not be working on Wednesday anymore, so that will open up more painting time and get me done with this pile of stuff and sent out to all of you, my kind and patient customers... :bow
And news also on the Joker head front... It's coming very very soon. I will be posting the details in the next few days, and it will be a limited run.. 10-12... So those who are interested, start keeping an eye out in the commerce thread for it.
Thank you, everyone, for your continued support and understanding in this... It really is important to me. I want everyone to be happy and not have to wait 5 months on top of already waiting 8 months for a figure to ship from the company...
Oh Boy. Moving...
All the Best wishes with that Josh. :D

Man thats a pretty intense shot of your boxes! I swear (IMO) the boxes are just as exciting as the figures that come in them, well Hot Toys anyway! :D

Good luck with the move Josh, I know it can be very stressful and is never fun. Atleast it usually means that you will get to try something new with your figure display though.
Since I have the next few days off work, I will be watching the board like a hawk waiting for one of those Joker heads :lol

Just don't forget to put all of your collectibles in the car and not the moving van. Especially those PFs. I moved last year, not to far as well, but didn't dare trust the collectibles to the moving van. I seatbelted them in the car next to me. Hope all goes well in the move and that nothing is damaged in the process.
And please, let me know when you decided on casting that Heath Joker head.

Oh yeah, I can't wait for that day... For now I only have my P2 Elder, Legend statue and Vader/Obi Wan on the shelf... I miss my stuff. :monkey2
But on to happier news....Today was THE day to be in the DA house. I arrived at work today, hungover and downtrodden... My favorite team lost the most important game of the year yesterday and I was feeling it (still wore my Pats hat anyway, to prove my dedication :D). And as the mail lady came in, holding a box from the UK.
It was my ROTS Hurricane Vader, a prize of my collection. Something, as a fellow customizer, I am honored to have amongst my repainted figs. After drooling over that for a few hours and trying to work... I got home to my in laws house and what is there waiting for me?? A gift from Sean (Maulfan himself)!!
My very own Ben Kenobi. After SSC lost mine and wouldn't replace it... He very kindly offered up his extra to me, out of the kindness of his heart. And to recieve it today, after our mutual team lost the game... was a nice pick up. So here are a few shots, Cane Vader fresh out of the box and a futzed Obi...
Obi will be repainted soon, too... just have to do some catchup with commissions before I can devote myself to that.
