Good news guys! Tonight I got a lot of that middle ground work done on the skin tones of at least 10 heads tonight. That would be the dark lights in the cracks and crevices. It's coming along nicely, I think by the end of the week we should have at least 80% of the work on my table finished. :rock
And great news for those who missed out on the Spooktacular Subject 560 EX. I turned a regular into the EX with just a suit change and some major blood. Will post pics tomorrow. Waaaay too tired to do it now. :lol

Hey Josh, did you check out Spenser's Wesley?

Could you walk us through what you did to him?

That is a beautiful Predator, man!
Could you walk us through what you did to him?
Thanks! Yeah, I can do a quick walkthrough!
I put the figure together and first mixed a cream color to paint the base of the figure's skin tone. I painted the front torso, biceps and forearms, forehead and legs entirely cream. I then went over that with Burnt Sienna for the start of his spots, did a few layers here and there to get a nice dept. I came back with Burnt Umber for a few dark areas on his shoulders and back as well as the bottoms of the legs. Lastly I painted black dots from the dark to the light as the colors faded together. Lots of attention was paid to the chest and abs as well as the arms and legs to get a nice pattern as well as a good color fade.
I finished up by redoing the cream and brown markings on the brow and upper mouth area and painted the same layers as the body on the forehead, using Les' example as reference. I sealed the body and pulled on the net.
I painted the armor a goldish bronze and added some blue green corrosion in the grooves, blending it with black in areas to get a nice old look. I finished off with a quick highlight of bronze to make it pop.
Also did some layers on the hand and feet ridges, to try and match the reference I had... which was not much. :lol
But that was it. Took me two days and a lot of learning to get it done, but it was a nice break from skin tones. :rock

How does the repainted head work with the helmet? Is there a danger of damaging the paint job?

Thanks man! I really love my Predator, can't wait to tackle the Pred 2 Elder when it comes. As for the mask, it doesn't mess up the paint apps at all. That sealer works wonders, you have to come at it with something pretty harsh to damage it.
Tonight I finished my "Stairwell Fight" Bond, Almost finished a Wolverine for Venny and am coming ever closer to getting these Obi Wan heads finished and out of my sight. lol

Thanks a lot Paul, I had a blast working on that. I cut straps from the Aliens USCM ammo bags I had laying around and wasn't going to use, so I cut them and made suspenders for Bond, to match closely enough to the reference shots I had...

Thank you very much Master Marc. I used a gray suit from Ebay for the 560 and the stock pants. I just brushed light gray on the pants to get them light enough to work. I bloodied the hell out of the shirt and voila... close enough!!
That Craig would net a fortune on eBay!

As I posted in the "other" thread... You'll have to losethe belt... The Rules of Wearing A Suit state; it's either one or the other when it comes to belts and suspenders! James Bond kills, thrills and breaks hearts & the rules all the time, but those rules are definately sacred to him.
Love that custom though!

Hey DA, what ever happened to your origins Kurgan project?
Well, it's always something I think about. But really, it was just too big for me at the time. Still something I would like to accomplish, but maybe when I can sculpt a bit better. Kurgan deserves more. :lol

I know the feeling Glenn. Personally I use Model Master Acryl for all skin tones and such, I sometimes use the cheaper Apple Barrel stuff for hair and dirt (washes). And thanks for the praise man, from you that really means a LOT to me. :rock

Thanks man! Mulder was tough, but I am very happy with the results. The eyes really saved it in the end. The SSC sculpt is a little big on the lips and jawline.
As for the naked girl, that is Graduation Day Buffy. She is in work at the moment, only first coat on the hair and face. But should have something going here soon for her.

I got lucky finding that coat on Ebay. It is a Allied tank commander coat, bleached a bit, leather bits glued on and pins pushed in/cut/glued. I just noticed the chain is on the wrong arm, but I will fix that. I got the chain from a tub stopper from the grocery store. :lol

Thanks! And actually I do kinda prefer painting 1/4th scale PF's. You can do so much more detail work and it's a bit easier. And it is so very worth it in the end.
You can also have the most expressive eyes due to the fixed pose, you don't have to worry about restricting movement to make the eyes work for the pose.

Nope, but the water treatment really helped them look not so far apart. I think it's all about the clothing drying on the body that helps give it weight that really isn't there normally.

Beautiful Frankenstein, Josh! I love what you did. Really suits your style too.
I have one, and dyed the coat black, but never repainted him because I had this great Billiken Frankenstein model I loved, but eventually sold :monkey2 and regreat selling....but I never tried to repaint him like I wanted to.
Your's really captures the movie style. Love the hair and the dark contrasts between that and his skin. Really nice moves man!
Just for the record, I met Karloff's daughter at the Mad Model Party II in L.A. in 1995 (sponsored by early Sideshow I might add!) and got to tell her how much her dad's performances meant to me. I had just painted my Billiken kit and was full of the Karloff mystique. He was a great actor, and this figure is really nice in my opinion. It does need work, as it is one of SS first 12" figures, and again, your repaint is really evocative and haunting and improves the figure immeasurably.
Maybe one day, I will dig mine out and repaint him once more. Your figure compells that old feeling.
Great work!!! :rock

Thanks a bunch Les, and nice to hear your take on this subject. Karloff did such a great job in the first two films, bringing so much emotion to a (until the second film) non speaking role. And once he did Bride, he made you feel even MORE for the Monster. Really was one of the most amazing performances I have ever seen from any actor. I think that is why The Monster is so timeless, not to mention Jack Pierce and his great makeup, or James Whale's direction. The stars really aligned on those two films.
That's great to hear about your experience meeting his daughter, and I hope you do get to paint this figure. It was really a lot of fun. The sculpt really gave and the contrast worked fantastically. Painting the forehead alone made me giddy. I loved it!
I will be doing the same to the Phantom and Dracula when I get them. So be on the lookout for it. :D
Nope, but the water treatment really helped them look not so far apart. I think it's all about the clothing drying on the body that helps give it weight that really isn't there normally.
Can you tell me more about this, or post a link? Is there anything more to it than just hanging the clothes on the figure wet to get a proper drape?
Love the latest repaints! I'm reluctant to start modifying my Sideshow figures, as that's a rabbit hole I'm not sure I should go down...

Stunning Josh, simply stunning, I'd love to photograph this one for you some day, there's just so much potential for powerful images with the down and out look of bruising and tattering you've captured there. If I could afford it I'd have like 5 Lukes to catch the various stages from first arriving at Dagobah to "that's not true, that IMPOSSIBLE". Funny, now it's making me think of Liar Liar with Jim Carey, "What the hell are you doing?" "I'm kicking my ass, do you mind!" :lol

Hey Josh, figured I'd share this with you here since I know you check here often. I saw your comment about dying your HT Jack Sparrow coat, I'd advise against it, someone else tried it and it runied the material, the effect wasn't that great at all. I'd love to see HT Jack head with is eyes redone, that's the major flaw I see in the HT head and a little touch up would go a long way for bringing out the character.

Thanks Pix! I was just soooo happy to be done with him. Faramir is a tough character to paint. That sculpt just gave me Hell. But I attacked him while I was on a roll to be sure to do my best and I think I did. Now, to get some money and ship this baby out to you! :rock
And Sean, thanks for the tip... I will leave it alone then. Don't want to ruin the coat. I think that the skin tone is mostly there, I will touch up, redo the eyes and weather the outfit. Should be a pretty quick job actually, I might do that tonight.

Yeah DA, I was the one who posted about dying the coat. Not a good idea, After bleaching it and using color remover I tried to redye it and pretty much all the buttons fell off and a few got lost, as well as the lining completely fell out of one side. In the end for some reason using black dye the coat turned out almost the exact shade of brown I started with anyway. What I finally ended up doing was using chalk pastel mixed in a grey tone and working it into the coat, and stealing a few buttons from the Blackbeard figure. It worked alright and looks a tad more like the film version, but I don't recommend the dying part.
Here's the fixed and chalked up version

Thanks a lot Justin. This figure was a dream come true, even though I wasn't all too happy with the sculpt initially either. I love it now, great figure.
I finished another SSE figure today, Vampyre from Nosferatu. The jacket was a challenge. In the candlelit shots you can see the red still but in regular light and in person... it's very minimal. I took some liberties, but I wanted to make this Vampyre my own.

I'm pretty sure Josh and I have talked about this before and we do it differently, but I do head paints in layers, white first for the eyes, then do the iris and pupils, then a fleshy coat over the edge of skin just at the lower eye lids, then brown coat over the top edge for a lashes effect and highlight of shape, then I put down the skin layers.
Josh is about a billion times better though :rock

but how?:monkey2 I grab the smallest thinnest paint brush I have and no matter which way I do it, colors stray into areas they are not supposed to go. IF that wasn't bad enough my pupils and irises have different non-circular shapes. :lol

Thanks guys, I really am excited to see where it goes. I'm trying to find ways to make it more varied in color and not just look like a lump of pink flesh. It has several animal faces, so there are ways to give it more depth there. But so far it is great, looks pretty creepy on my table. :lol

It's time for disease and pustules my friend! This is an exercise in grotesque imagination, as much as your skills. Get to it! :lol
GORE IT UP! Blood, pus, bile, God knows what else! Make it/us suffer! :monkey4
And enjoy! :D

I also received my DA pack! And it is an outstanding job on the Obi head! And thanks for the exrta goodies jammed in there! You rock Josh!
One question, it doesn't fit flush on the neck post. Should I drill it out a bit more? Terrified, cause I don't want to **** it up!
Magnificent work!

Rock on!! Hell yeah bro, I just sent you a PM about that! Glad you liked it bro, I really wanted to make it special. :rock
And Mr Hat, hmmm.. So it's not fitting on the body? Crap. I must not have dremelled it far enough in. I'm still pretty new at that. Ok, here are a few solutions....
One, you can either dremel the inside a bit deeper... if you have one. If not, you might have to cut some of the neckpost off and glue it on. I have done that many times, works best on Dragon cause they do not have that spring in the neck, but SSC does and it is a pain to get around without ruining the neckpost. Which body are you using?

DA, I am using the sideshow body. Not to worry man, I can dremel it out a bit. Takes nothing away from the beauty it is!
And I have to agree with Venakin there! That Wolvy is beyond words. Utterly lifelike. And everytime I see the Supes repaint, I start jonesing for one of those bad boys!
PS - My wife finally commented on me getting my Obi head. She thinks you are an artist my friend! No comments about having to sleep with the head instead of her. High praise indeed!

:rock:rock:rock On the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Josh,
PM sent. Dag Backpack and Yoda arrived and on it's way to you priority mail with Bes Luke. You should get it Wed. Let me know when it arrives Bro.
No rush on this stuff during the busy holidays, was hoping to get it to you last week, but got totally f'd on shipping delays, so no rush... :D

Thanks a lot guys! Venny... NICE pics! I'm glad you got your stuff safe and sound. Wolverine and Snake look fantastic in your shots, as does Supes. Very nice my friend. :rock
And Mr Hat, thank you very much bro. Obi was a joy to paint and I am glad he was worth all the money and time waiting, I'm so glad it is in it's rightful place now.
And P!tu.... can't wait for the video bro!
Paul, can't wait to get Luke either. Should be a lot of fun to do that version of Luke, being so different from my own approach a few weeks ago. :chew

Cool Josh, actually we are doing a Luke that works BOTH as Dagobah and Final Battle Bes pre-blood, but I know whatcha mean, Bro.
It will be cool to see him as a DA Dagobah with lil' Yoda riding that backpack, we might have to paint that Yoda cane to look woody, looks very plastic... one thing though, and I HAVE to say it, the Hasblo Yoda sculpt is ACTUALLY QUITE GOOD! :chew
Anyway, I can't wait to see Luke's eyes reworked correctly, and that outfit weathered... I always thought the HS was excellent... :D

FANTASTIC news! You've been waiting for months, so I am very humbled by your patience bro. I think in the end, you will have the most progression of my work... From the old days when I was still kind of rough to my current work. You are probably the only one to really have a good mix of stuff from me back before anyone else did. Bannister Paul and Pixle are right up there too though, all my old school customers.. :lol
You guys are the best, thanks for always being there for me and putting up with all my shipping woes. :monkey2

By the way, I'm putting together a Terminator 1 figure similar to the one you were working on a while ago, and I was wondering what you used for the silver design on the leather section of the back of his coat.

I am with you there, Hasbro has their far share of bad looking Star Wars figures but I don't think they have done a bad Yoda. From the ESB figure to the Ultimate version for AOTC/ROTS the sculpts and accesories have been pretty nice.

Beleive me, my crappy picture doesn't do it justice. It's an amazing paint job.
I decided to put it on a Dragon base body... In person it seems a bit shorter and more accurate.

I got my heads yesterday. On my way home from school I stopped by the office to plop them on their bodies and, what can I say? Faramir looks noble, Han looks like a scoundrel, and Asajj looks like a dangerous sexy woman holding a zombie head.
I'll take pics Friday and post them.
Bravo Josh. :clap

:lol Don't worry... pics coming very soon. I'm about 80% done at the moment and am hoping to get it finished tonight. Just working on a top secret project at the moment that needs to be done ASAP. :D
Pics of some random stuff I am doing. More Anguish shots and an in work Buffy Zombie conversion...
Lots more is coming, been busy.. Still working on Anguish, another Anakin, Supes, Wolverine, Hanks, some Wesley heads and some Bonds... Only snag is that I am running low on skin tone and might actually run out before I get paid and can go and buy some. But I will cross that bridge when I get there. :lol
