This is what you start up with
http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/8050/granas.jpg
This model of coffee table is unfortunately already discontinued in Canada. They still have the dining table which is similar and could be modified for an even bigger display case... (I picked up the table from the as is section for cheap already :D but usually its $300 incl 4 chairs) Well keep an eye for used as I found them being offered on craigslist quite often though many of them the glass top tend to be scratched up :(
So Figurefreak started lowering the magazine shelf which is as simple as cutting 4 measured cutouts into the legs with a dremel or similar tool
Added some kind of metal sheet on top of the shelf and closed up the sides with acrylic panels and finished if with a set of Ikea Dioder LED strip lights and VOILA... what a beauty!
http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/1959/displayn.jpg

I started mine but have yet to finish my MDF cover and acrylic sides. I am using HomeDepot insulation foam tape to close up most of the gaps to make it dustproof. My latest update.. I doubled the setup using now two of these !!!!!

it's his TDK setup you see up there but he just never created a separate thread for it so I decided this needs to be out there for others to see and follow. Mine is still the partially done MR MF setup:P

If you want to follow some instructions
read the thread starting from this page (http://sideshowcollectors.com/forums/showthread.php?t=91065&page=15) from ironed as he has his ideas and progress extremely well documented

Applying the idea to Ikea Vittsjo table by chillipep66
hey guys! took this great idea and applied it to the Vittsjo table. which is slightly smaller. but I have a Granas I scouted out on Kijiji that I will also be outfitting the way you all did. thanks so much for the idea! this is genius. heres the case, currently holding my godfather collection. quick no flash grain pics, sorry!

That's amazing stuff! Well done!

I'd probably end up putting stuff on it and messing up the display, tough. You know, the way you always leave stuff there "for a second" and ends up staying there for months?:gah: This is only for organized and disciplined people.

Yeah I was hoping this will encourage me to keep the coffee table clear but that has yet to work out at all :lol

Thanks to FigureFreaks again for his idea and sharing of it. Without it I would not know what to do with my Falcon and it probably just ends up collecting dust inside it's box but this is my glorious centerpiece though I wish I could rotate the Tumbler and Batpod out ones in a while as his setup is just awesome!

My newbie question of the day is:

What do you use to keep your Millenium falcon, bat mobile or any other large item in place so that it doesn't rattle if the table is bumped into, moved, etc?

Geil

I can only speak for myself but for the MR MF is it's SHEER WEIGHT!!! :lol Nothing is going to move that sucker.. The MF IS what keeps the table from moving or shaking at all! :D

…and I can say exactly the same thing of the Tumbler. :wink1: :lol

The table itself is also really heavy because of the weight of the glass. :)

I am so surprised so few go this route ?!
wireless lights tend to be non-strip style so very visible when used in this rather exposing table

Not a prob. I actually love the dioders. Whats the best route at hiding the cords and then having one going across the floor? Thats the only thing thats killing me.

Yeah that is the biggest issue usually. I have a rug going almost to the sofa so I will eventually just cut a whole into that rug to feed the wire through from the bottom

Hi there!
...and welcome to the club. :wave

It depends on the floor and what you have on the floor.
The diode cables are very tiny so I just pulled them trough one of the table tubes
and covered them with a small tape to the floor. :)

You can also pull them trough a small tube on the floor I guess.

Good luck! :wink1:

Question: what are the dimensions of both the dining table and coffee table? I fell in love with the batman display and i want to do the same to display in my living room. I found a really good price on a dining table but not sure if it will fit the tumbler and batpod. Any tips or advice would really help! Thanks!

Geil
05-24-2011, 02:33 PM
coffee table is l47" x w31" x h20" (based on a quick google search, result is from a persona ad so might not be 100% accurate)
dining table is length 57 1/2", width 30 3/4", height 29 1/2"
http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/40134347
Mind you the dining table shelf is mounted by screws so the mod will have to improvised differently than the coffee table which I have not attempted but I am sure it's just a matter of drilling a few holes instead.
The dining table is about the same footprint but is significantly higher so you really can't use is as a coffee table unless you start hacking away at the legs. I was going to use that one for the Star Wars setup eventually when I have the spave where I could benefit from the extra height to display more X-Wings but it would certainly stay along the wall as a dedicated display.

So i finally got a granas coffee table and now i'm ready to turn it into a display but would like some feedback on the best approach. I really like figurefreaks custom and would like to do something very similar. I understand that i have to drop the bottom shelf but how do i go about sealing it and making it dust free?

Geil
07-12-2011, 07:35 PM
Finally another member to follow! Can't believe this idea does not get picked up more often!
Dropping the shelf is a matter of cutting new cutouts in each leg and to make sure it is exactly the same height. I used a dremel with cutting disc to do it.
As for how to seal the case I have yet to do it so Figurefreak is the only one who actually executed it.
My theoretical approach:
Base:
- cut 1/2" MDF panel the size of the glass top
. cut out squares in the four corners to clear the legs
- route 1/8" wide groves close to the edge of each side 1/4" deep
- finish it with a few coats of black.
Side panels:
- cut 1/8" acrylic panels to fit the open sides (could use more $$ thicker panels for a more solid look, increase width of groove accordingly)
- exact width but taller by 3/4" so it can lean on the inside of the top edge of the frame
- slide it in the groove of the base
- insulation foam tape along the inside edge of the top frame for the acrylic panel to lean against and create a seal
- also use insulation foam to seal the gap between the frame top and the glass top
- apply insulation foam tape along the inside of each leg to flush against the acrylic panel to seal the sides and hold the panels in place
- not very strong structure and with my kid starting to walk I am going to have to figure out a way lock down the panels....

Hello there! :wave

That’s a very nice description Geil. :goodpost:

I still need to use some kind of insulation foam tape to make mine a little more dust free. Not much dust coming inn as is, but like to use some where the acryl rest on the shelf. I feel that will do it. Other than that it has survive small kids and pets… My cat tried to jump trough it …but he have learn. :rotfl

Glad to see that someone pick up this idea, I think it’s a great way to display something like this. Good luck to you Danielito. :yess:

:rotfl that is so hilarious :rotfl
yeah with the Millenium Falcon being so huge and possibility of the'89 Batmobil I am going back to my original setup of the TV being flanked by the vehicles. In the past I only had the Tumbler and Batmobil so it wasn't well balanced as a display but this will change with '89 :D Besides I miss the fact that I can stare at the Tumbler when I am watching TV

Hi jye318

Got your PM but figure I post my reply right here.
Maybe Figurefreaks and DarthMagnus could detail how they have finished off the side panels? My plans were in post#44 but I have yet to find time to actually do it myself :P
As for help to manipulate the material I am not sure where you are located but here in Canada HomeDepot cut wood and in our case MDF to your dimensions. They also carry acrylic in the door section and might do the same though not sure their blade would just rip it apart! Thinner panels you just use a cutting tool (which they also sell) to score the acrylic and then you can just break excess off over table edge
BTW welcome to the Granas group :lol

I have no experience to do any work like this, even my friend cut the legs for me, so please teach me how to do the side and I am happy with it, thanks for all the help guys!

I must have tried 4-5 times before I found one that had almost no major scratching in the middle of the glass... still had scratches but hairline mostly and 2 big ones but off centre so I took it... I remember the first one I went looking at was so bad and I still had to resist hard to convince myself to be patient cause I really wanted our setup ;)
oh one had loose legs and turns out the threaded bolt inside the leg cracked loose so you can't fix that easily either :P

Great work guys.

Just wondering if I missed it. Are you using the top or one of the sides to get "in" it, to update your display? And if one of the sides, how do you have the glass coming in and out.

Im actually thinking about getting the big table. For a dark gloomy Burton Bats dio. Nothing says going overboard on something like putting a dinning room table as a display piece.

I can only speak for myself, but I’m using the top glass to get inside it. :D

The side panels are made of acryl so to make it a little solid they “glued” together.
Not a permanent solution if you like to update the display from time to time, but it works for me. :wink1:

Ok going to need some help on this one. Got one today for 30.00 needed some cleaning and I can see what they meant by using a dremmel tool to make the exact holes for the hooks to go into. Now my question is how much of a distance did you guys have and if so do you have any close up pictures?

I'm debating on painting mine flat black. I'm a newbie so excuse my many questions. Where can I get metal sheets and if so do any of you guys have a template or measurements especially the measurements for the corner edges? I just want to make sure I don't screw this one up. thanks guys

I have yet to finish mine but I assume you are talking about the shelf? using MDF might be the cheapest way to go about it and easiest to work with. I even got my local Home depot to precut it for me for free as no way I can make a clean cut of this size on my own tablesaw. As for how low you want it to go most use the standing batman as reference so you are looking at about 13" but better doublecheck.

Geil can you give us the measurements of the MDF? I just found out what that was at home depot. Did you paint yours?

oh :P my Granas/everything project has been in stand still for a long while now so the MDF is cut and just leaning against the wall in the garage as bare as it comes. I can't guarantee the dimension to be correct as I have not test fitted it either so you are better off to get the measurements directly off your table to be sure :P
Mind you there is more work to be done. Just out of my head you still have to cut out the corners to fit through the legs. I was going to route in a track to secure the acrylic panels in but have not given it enough thought on how to actually do it though the router will likely take care of that. I think I got my rough idea worded out somewhere earlier in this thread :P Just been so long of doing nothing but diapers and feedings

Dropped the tray today and got the MDF on there. I'm debating if I should keep the 1inch mdf or switch to the 1/2 inch. I am liking the idea of making the groove that you mentioned Geil so 1 inch would do just i case, maybe. My god it was a pain in the *** to get the board to fit even though I measured it correctly.

Going to probably get started on painting it while its assembled. My next questions is how did you guys run the wiring?

Geil
09-11-2012, 05:58 PM
btw I received my set of 5050 RGB 300pcs 5m LED lights w power supply, controller and remote for like $35 shipped and I gotto say they are the way to go. the white is good and at brightest it is blinding but you have the ability to adjust the brightness so even better. This was a cheap set to test so I am going for another few with more functional remote as I am passing this set to Toys2 as he is in the mids of reno and needs these asap and me not so much :(
As for hiding the wires etc I imagine to just go through the inside of the legs (hmmm)
I like the groove idea but now think it might not be easily made as I have yet to find the right tool to do it with. At first I was thinking of using weatherstrip to set up the inside of the frame all around and then lean the panel against it to create the airtightness amd then use a few corner joints to lock them in place but now I am more likely to just use doublesided tape to tape them in place instead. In my case to access the inside I would have to remove the top anyways as my MR MF is just too big to go any other way so might as well continue to do that and hence me glueing down the side panels.
BTW I went scouring HD again and found some 1/4" wide aluminum tracks in silver so one could screw these into the MDF and then just place the panel in it to lock down the bottom without routing a groove. Might not look as sharp and would need painting but be easier

Kicker773
09-15-2012, 05:17 PM
Yep painting the frame Flat black and the board semi gloss so the light can reflect off of it.

Geil is right, my dimensions will not be same and neither will anyone else. Its not an 1inch off each corner. You have to take into account a fraction of an inch due to the frame. My suggestion, flip the table over with the legs attached and measure it upside down. Don't use the legs unattached and trace it because it won't fit. I didn't take that into consideration for this first one. I had to do some trimming. For the 2nd one I will learn from my mistakes.

Yeah I know the panels will fit. I already did the measurements and hopefully will go to this shop in my area that home depot guy told me to go visit. The bottom board is aligned with the top so no problems there. Its just a small part of the edge..I tried to sand it down a little. It helped just a little bit. But hopefully it will look good when its done.

Then I will take some two sided carpet tape cut it into 3/8" strips and stik the angle to the leg and shelf, then I can use it to stik the plexiglas to the angle for a nice finish. I like the carpet tape because it is thin and clear and you will not see it in the finish product.http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt41/ironed/Joker%20custom/Coffee%20table%20MOD/35e0e5a05a46693bd71e1bb9cc445a5e_zps563876c1.jpg

In my HD it's in the door and window section in the back. They also got some in the hardware (nuts and bolts) section but those are for actual structural support while the other ones are more decorative (but perfectly fine for our purpose)

ironed
09-22-2012, 05:14 PM
Hi Kicker not sure of the section but it was beside the flooring area and I just noticed it, it's all small stuff and it comes in three types silver, gold and black and about 5 or 6 different shapes all 8' long. I almost went with the black but though the silver would add a little class to the finish. I used a mini grinder with a zip cut blade this worked really nice because after the cut you could grind it for a nice square finish also I put the bottom on first so when you butt your ends if the side piece is not perfect you can hide it in the top under the angle framehttp://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt41/ironed/Joker%20custom/Coffee%20table%20MOD/edec16c99b3d7ecaa310b00867ab44aa_zpse9021054.jpg

Hi Geil I was looking at RGB LED's and that first one that you handed off to Eric did it come with the power adapter to plug in, and I was thinking about the corners under the display case and the wire connectors they have one for each corner so you can aim the lights down and horizontally if you want maybe both 2 and 2, or do you think the LED strip would bend like that. The connectors look like they have 4" to 5" of wire and that should work good?

Geil
09-22-2012, 06:42 PM
Hi ironed

The first set was a complete bundle with power supply. The LED strip comes with the matching connectors to the control module pre-soldered one on each end of the strip just like in the picture in the listing. Actually all pictures are pretty accurate of what I received.
I have not really thought it through but I guess the controller will have to be mounted near where the lights are as the wiring will not be long enough but most importantly the IR receiver will need to be visible for the remote to work. The LED strip itself is pretty flexible so I imagine you might be able to "curve" it around each corner without actually folding the strip. The same seller actually has this connector (http://www.ebay.ca/itm/10PCS-10mm-Width-Connector-Line-RGB-5050-Led-Strip-lights-No-Soldering-/160834870788?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2572815e04) that would be an easy solution

Man I was going to keep using my dioders for my coffeetable but now you got me thinking and some colours would look good on the MR MF too

Kicker773

I finally figured out the reason why my measurements were off. As you tighten the the ends the distance between the legs starts to go off.

I'm actually going the glass route. But I so want to find that angle thing. I went with a 1/2 inch mdf board and instead of spray I paint rolled it. Spray doesn't seem to stick very well.

I know the industrial adhesive can hold the top glass but would like something for the bottom support.

Need to also decide on what lighting...awaiting people's work before I plunge.

Geil
09-22-2012, 08:34 PM
I keep recommending 3M VHB exterior tape. The grey version can be easily found at HD and I would almost want to say if you were to use it along the entire length you will have fun trying to remove the glass afterwards. I use it to reattach decals to my car and I am telling you it won't come off voluntarily ;)

Hey guy at the glass shop said silicone for the edges, is that even possible?

Geil
09-26-2012, 01:52 PM
Well I am sure that's what they use to "glue" glass together but just the 3M exterior tape seem less messy and who know what the fumes you smell when applying this stuff do to you and more importantly to our toys
Just make sure you apply the tape in a warm environment and possibly go over it with a heat gun/hairdryer. Maybe even clamp it down for a day.

lamtsunfung
09-26-2012, 03:09 PM
Clear silicone is a good way to go for permanent glass installation. Fumes should not be an issue, and it's what is used on tubs, sinks, showers, etc.

Kicker773
09-26-2012, 04:08 PM
It's going to be permanent. I just don't want 1/4 thick inch glass falling on the bat pod and especially on the tumblers fins and antennas.

this is what I use for anything that needs to stay attached
As for your choice actually why 1/4" glass? 1/8 should be enough and I would spend the money on tempered glass instead. I know a lot of glass cases use even thinner than that closer to 1/16" The other alternative is certainly acrylic panels and what I will go for as I can process it myself. The beauty with this case is because you have a frame that is nice and thick there is plenty of room to hide any most flaws. I wouldn't even bother sanding the edges and there is plenty room for tolerance too. It's a whole different story when you don;t have a frame to hide stuff behind.
Keep in mind you will eventually have to move this thing around and glass especially 1/4" will weight this down a lot. It will stay scratch free easier but then acrylic is so much lighter and durable and possibly cheaper when compared to tempered glass

I know but I went with the glass close to the top part of it. Plus it is tempered. It will need to be heavy and to be able to stay put since we always have kids over. So it has to be sturdy. I asked a home depot guy about acrylics but the guy acted like he didn't know what I was talking about. If I knew I would have gone iron's route. But its already ordered so I will have to work with it. =T

Also if you notice as you tighten the screws on the top part the measurements start to go off wack. So a thick glass won't cause it to crack per say as get everything to line up

Are you going use a trim angle or stick it rite to the frame, and with the lower shelf installed + you tighten the screws it firms up nice and square.
Giel is rite with the trim I have some room to play, you will need some room for tape + trim or just tape, when mine was all tight I got an even 44" for the length and 28-3/16" for the width, and I had to cut about 3/16" off my 44" side panels for the trim angle.

This one might be tight to outsource. Table has been discontinued for a number of years and is big so you have to look for it locally used! And used you have to decide for yourself if a unit you find is good enough of condition and acceptable for conversion. I have gonna through many to find acceptable compromise as these were cheap to start with so most have not been taken care of and have scratches. All that without even laying a finger on customizing it :P

Cut some carpet tape @ 1/2"-14" stripshttp://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt41/ironed/Joker%20custom/Coffee%20table%20MOD/0d583e52b3a23301bd191b4a0896fb5e.jpg

The tape works great but you have to make sure you sand or file the ends of your angles smooth, the tape is thin with a strong hold. http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt41/ironed/Joker%20custom/Coffee%20table%20MOD/cb194413ebb21cd5cfc5f8d6314d1d35.jpg

Be careful with your placement "STICKY"http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt41/ironed/Joker%20custom/Coffee%20table%20MOD/3913483b3914850bdf7dcc701e84869f.jpg

The bottom angle is loose for now until I get the lights, the long pieces of angle will be fixed to the base, the shorter ends will be tacked into place so this can all be taken apart later if I want to. http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt41/ironed/Joker%20custom/Coffee%20table%20MOD/77bf1c4fb5a0ae70901b2f505de3fed7.jpg

don't forget the weatherstrip on the top frame to close that gap underneath the glass to prevent dust from entering

It's only a 2mm gap i will take a look and see what's available, there's a small black foam strip that you can peel and stick, and I can use it on the gap at the top of the plexiglass, your rite BLACK loves dust.:hi5:
