I never really thought of JAWS as a horror flic, but I suppose it is.

06-21-2006, 06:45 PM
Well, being as JAWS is my favorite movie of all time...
And I have made several small, handmade Bruce sharks over the years...one of which I actually sent to Robert Mattey, the mechanical genius that made the sharks actually work in the movie....
Uh...YEAH!!!!
I got mine ordered and two thirds paid for now!
In fact, I have been told it was me (although I am not sure myself...) that was the call in to Sideshow asking about Terry Wurmser that got this whole 28" shark project going...(I'd LOVE it if this were true...but I can't prove it....but I did call in and ask about TW for a buddy's research project and it was about the right timeframe...)
So....
Yeah....
COLOR ME READY!
Although, all respects to Matt Fals and his very respectful and diligent work, which is great!...but...my shark is going to be VERY CUSTOMIZED! :monkey5
No details yet, until I get the 28" rascal in hand, but a total body, inch by inch repaint is an absolute, as is a complete re-toothing, and other small detail things. When I am finished, he will BE Bruce!
Trust me! I've waited 31 years for a decent body sculpt to revamp.
I'll savor this one! :D
My most anticipated "figure" ever! All else pales!
Thanks Sideshow!
Darklord Dave
06-21-2006, 07:14 PM
Les, it could very well be your call that set it off. Tom G. talks about it in one of the blogs. Apparently it was a call that alerted them that Terry Wurmser's dad was also Bruce's dad.

Hmmm....curious....
Maybe.
I just am not sure. I do know that is weird. :D
Anyway, hope this is one nice piece! Can't wait!
I like the newer base too. MUCH improved.
Although, the shark looks a bit different also. His head does anyway. Wonder if they reworked it some? He looks more like a real shark in the new shots with the newer base. Or could that be a different paintup???

I don't like the amount of human error they allowed in the piece, because the accuracy is affected. Hopefully it's really as accurate as possible in the end.

The only thing I find wrong with this piece is that the mid section of bruce is far to big compared to his head from the straight on shot. The Mouth could perhaps be a tad bigger also or it's just that the head needs to be wider. Otherwise it's a pretty perfect piece.
Not perfect and Just to compare how wide the head and mouth should be.

08-06-2006, 11:58 PM
Nice picture comparison. It does seem that the mouth is not as wide, but then again the SS shark doesn't have his mouth open as wide as those pictures. All in all, its still the first and only official Bruce JAWS shark maquette so its a must have for me.
I'm onboard for the exclusive right now but with all the new SS releases (Jabba, etc), I may have to cancel the exclusive and go for the regular from a dealer. I hate to lose those "drawings" but I live in CA and tax AND shipping is a killer for this piece. If I go thru a dealer I can save more than $80... which is another figure and then some.
Either way, I'll have Bruce.

Hey this is been around for awhile but is close to finally being released. It looks to be the end all be all of JAWS documentaries. THE SHARK IS STILL WORKING. The story behind it is very cool. Four friends decide to do a Doc. on JAWSFEST and before they knew it it exploded into something much bigger. Now even Chief Brody himself is narrating the film. This looks to be a must for JAWS fans out there. Heres the link.

I... sadly... had to cancel my exclusive due to funds this month... But I DID reorder him via FlexPay, with my first charge coming out this next month. So I should be getting him in 3 months.. Yeah, I got mine with Flexpay the first day it was announced, way back when, and they put off the last payment until now...I hope...but I am a bit confused about the remaining orders. I mean, I guess as long as you flex pay starting now, it lasts the needed months. I just am not sure whether that is the same release of it, or another round coming out later, or what.
If anyone got it paid for in full when they ordered it back in April or May or whenever it was, then I am wondering if they have gotten any shipping notices yet. My last flexpay is due now, supposedly then it will be shipped, within several days of that....or something. It's all a bit uncertain to me anyway. They may not have them yet.
As long as it comes out soon. :D

Relax. Breathe. Now, think...just how big a box do you reckon this shark Maq is coming in? it measures 28" by 14" not on the base unless it all has to be assembled somehow, then it's more model than maquette....so...a small refrigerator? a CRATE......"Honey, is this the car parts you ordered?"

Couldn't wait till I got home, so at least opened up the outer box, ended up with #200 of #250.
The blueprints are about 22 x 17 and there are 5 sheets, one kinda of a sketch with a lot of notes an a shark that looks like the size of the Spruce Goose and the other 4 are the usual blue prints.
Box looks nice, wish I had brought my camera to work.
plus they stuck in the new Sideshow catalogue as well.

I just got my shipping notice! Bruce will be here on Friday. 29 pounds!
Nope Bruce's fins are stationary, the bookshelf he sits on is a good 3 or 4 inches from the wall. A few of the pictures with the poster in the background didn't come out so well, with the age of the poster, fact I have yet to have it linen backed and the lighting, the poster comes out looking worn.
He is very big though and my wife and I are debating on getting him a pedestal or another bookshelf with a wider top.

it was announced shortly after the product reveal when they were updating the base that he indeed would be able to display in either direction.
But since I dont have mine yet, i cant confirm 100%
EDIT: found it
One more cool new feature of this base...
We made the nameplate a separate piece, so those of you who don't like it, don't have to display it. If you like it, you can choose which side of the base to mount it on. He can be face forward, sideways, or ass backwards... whatever you like!

You can display Jaws either way as the base has a set of grooves around the outside edges and the plaque fits into those grooves, so it can be displayed pretty much all around the base.
Bruce itself only fits one way into the watery stand, its a nice tight fit too, no wiggle room at all. The finish on the outside of Bruce is a little uneven, some areas are very smooth to the touch, others are a bit rough, like a fine grade of sandpaper, but nothing major. The eye's look a bit different then the photos, but can hardly tell the difference.
Think I am going to have to get a larger bookshelf or pedestal for him, I have the Macfarlane Jaws set as well, was hoping to somehow display that below Bruce.
I have quite a few sideshow statues from Lotr to Starwars and so far this is my favorite among them.

Yeah, I'm almost positive that is a dolphin. I've loved sharks forever (even had a pet shark at one point), and their shape is instantly recognizeable. That's not a shark.
Blueprints are nice, but really I have no place to display them, if someone had the room, they would frame up nicely, but my office walls are already taken up and I was lucky that the Jaws Poster fit in that corner.
I thought for a little bit about displaying it my theater room but Jaws wouldnt look right with Starwars and Lotr sideshow statues. I have a good size hallway leading to the theater room but it has my dvd's, books and other statue's taking up all the wall space and that doesn't even take into account of the framed movie posters up all over.
Good thing my wife loves me :)

I'm thinking about a display group for Jaws that will include the maquette w/ one of the blueprints hanging above it (professionally framed of course). I'd then like to get a PF or sculpted 1/4 Quint and get an original Jaws insert poster to go with that.
I like pdx's idea of having a tasteful grouping for my favorite movie series of all time. I'd have a LOTR area, Star Wars, Jaws, Indy, Alien, Terminator etc. all w/ artwork, statues, and a VERY minimalist/classy approach.
Gruson's display set up is very well done, I wish I had a room that I could work with like that.
We have an unfinshed third floor my wife and I are in the process of finshing and she mentioned at some point to make it into a collectable/library set up, but honestly I'd rather have a nice master bedroom with a corner soaking tub.
Came home early today, Jaws looks great here in the office, dog keeps looking at it though, maybe he thinks Bruce is gonna steal his dinner.

I weighed my base and shark on a regular home scale and the base is about 5 pounds and the shark is right at 10. So, 15 as a set. Box is large and heavy....
No lights in my base. Solid lucite or whatever that blue tinted stuff is.
Hope that helps.

Is the JAWS logo plate removable so you can put it on either side or is it in place permanently because the photos I'm seeing in here have it on different side than the official pictures.
There is a dual edged groove running around the edge of the base which allows you to use the display plaque pretty much anywhere on the base.

Thanks, I can't wait for Tuesday when I have him in hand. I don't know about anyone else in here, but I've been wanting an accurate full body item of Bruce for 13 years and my heart lit up when I saw Sideshow was going to make one. I love the McFarlane set, I was just disappointed they never did a full body shark, but now we have one, and from what I've seen in photos, a beautiful one. Was there a DVD of the production videos included?
figuremaster_les

No DVD Maulfan. Just those plans.
Yeah, that nameplate is a loose peice that has a caution breakable note on it, although I accidentally dropped mine and it bounced and all for ages it seemed and did not break. (I have NO idea what kind of stuff this thing is cast in!!!!) The nameplate sets into that 360 goove on the base anywhere you want to put it, sides, front, back, wherever. I sometimes put it under the mouth as that part faces me at my computer. But, mostly I leave it off. Looks more museum-like just as the shark. No tag. Just big fish. Seems even bigger without the tag to me.
Hope you other guys start getting them soon, as I really wanna see him in your personal displays now. Mine is so nondescript and non fancy...for now...
To see Bruce in a better display is now my biggest curiousity.
Not sure anyone has a nicer setup that Gruson's. But, it will be interesting to see!
Good luck guys! It'll be the biggest present you have ever opened, short of a car...:lol

I'll find out tomorrow, but I'm very anxious about this piece, is there anything that connects Bruce to the base or does he just rest on it, given his weight I've been worried all along how well the base could support him with such little surface area. He his separate from the base right, because Sideshow customer service told me he would be.

Yeah, he comes separate. The base has a nice, 1" rectangular post that has a metal rod inside it that protrudes up another inch. You thread that assembly into his belly and he slides down, neat as you please, onto a fine trimmed black felted top area of that wonderful, clear blue lucite post.
EXQUISITE base! You'll love it! No shaking or wobbling at all. Perfect.

Thanks for the info, I have no doubt I'll love everything about this piece, my only concern all along has been the ability to check out Bruce up close and personal off the base, and that the base supported him well, he has so many protruding pieces if he were to fall of the stand he'd lose teeth or fins somewhere along the way, can't wait til tomorrow, I think I'll have to open him up during lunch :)

Well if your wife leaves you over your collectibles, she may take half, but it won't be the half you care about cuz that's what drove her away and she'll want no part of it, there's the secret to winning in a divorce, just make all of your assets collectibles and then if she splits, you come out on top, king of the hill. (Not that I wish divorce on anyone, I like making jokes and just found this to be good material.)

I had a slight scare today, I had Bruce sent to my office so I'd be sure someone could sign for him, and FedEx has a standard drop off time at my company, and a FedEx truck came but it was regarding something else and no Bruce, which worried me. A few hours later a different truck came and apparently had vehicle troubles, but I have bruce now and I haven't had him out of the box too long, but right away, BEAUTIFUL, everything I could hope for, I am so pleased with him. Mat Falls, Terry Wermser, Anthony Mestas, and Tom Gilliland all deserve a very big thanks and congratulations on this piece. Not only is Bruce a great collectible, but a great love an care for his look has clearly gone into this and there could be no better a representation to capture his image in 3D form forever. I've wanted a "Bruce" great white for 13 years, and have attempted to make my own on several occassions and sought out any merchandise that would come close, and finally, I have one, and it's everything I've hoped for all these years.

It is an amazing piece, I feel it's true about every Sideshow piece, you have to see it in person to take in it's glory. In certain lighting, you'd swear it was the same texture/material as the movie robot, not a solid statue. If I had known it would be this amazing I would have paid twice it's price.
just got an email that Bruce will be on the way :) :) :) :) :) :)
