View Full Version : So, MAUL bust a disapointement ?????

Was reading some post of the people who received this Bust at SF..It seems the paint job on the eyes is a very big disapointment...I was wandering what people here think of this...Will we be more tolerant of the paint job because were the '' freaks'' ??? Just curious...
what is SF, and what did they not like about the eyes. can you post pics?
Arn't the eyes supposed to look exactly like the photos on SSC's website? I thought they updated those photos of the Maul bust from Prototype to Production pics. If so, why would they not look exactly like the pics?

I saw some pics of someone who got this in the Phillipines and it looked great. Won't know for sure until I get mine next week.
Looks like it is drawn out by the flash to me. Why would they make an assumption on such a small pic with a flash right smack in the middle of his forehead? get a macro shot?

They didn't put the blood shot effect on gthe outside edges. Not sure that would be an issue if I was getting it the rest of the detail looks amazing and the eyes on this haven't changed since we saw it at SDCC. Not sure what the shock is to some folks.

Going by those pictures, then I'd be gutted with this bust! :monkey2
Those eyes really lack a hell of a lot of detail. I'm sure I've seen better yes - human ones. They don't have that 'wet' look that eyes have.
For the price, I'd want them to better... but I'm a fussy :monkey3

That was my first thought on seeing the SS piece. At $600 it's a very nice piece, but I think glass eyes painted right would have been spot on. The current SS eyes in that pic look lifeless compared to the movie pic. I understand it's a bust and not Ray Park, but I think the eyes could have had more detail.
That said, it's still a piece I'd LOVE to have.

Just so you realize, the Maul photos that are on the product page on the Sideshow site:

were taken from the production sample, not the prototype. The eyes in those photos look to be the same as the eyes posted at the top of this thread - just without the glaring flash pointed right at them :duff

Judging by that one picture (posted by Shai), the eyes look pretty dead on this otherwise fantastic piece. Me too, I really miss the gloss on the eyes. I can understand that some people might be upset by this, since the eyes take up a lot of attention. It's hard to tell if there is gloss on the eyes, but glossy eyes and smaller pupils would have looked more realistic. Looking forward to see some more pictures, that might give a better idea.

I agree in theory, but the flash should reveal the almost "sun ray" lines coming from his eyes, SS's piece appears to be missing those.

There's *some* detail, but it isn't what you see in the movie. This is one of my pics:
Eye Detail (http://static.flickr.com/45/141633215_c735a0df40_b.jpg)
You can see the detail in the corner of the eye, but the iris is pretty much a straight gradiant. There is some gloss to it however, that gets a little lost in the photos.
I love the bust, and think it looks great, but I'm not going to tell other people how or when to spend their money.
I think in the context of the face, the eyes are just fine:

The earlier pictures were done indoors with a flash, but I think ended up fairly representitive of how the thing looks in person (it's especially tricky to get good pics where the skin texture shows up).
I feel like I've linked the photos in a million threads already. The other threads about the bust on this board should have links.

Not to mention the complaints are from those who don't even have the piece. Everyone who has received seems excitingly happy with it. Just like me. :chew The eyes on are not like the promo pic posted earlier in this thread. They are more like what we saw, in the movie, when Maul appeared after the hanger doors opened when he face Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. Comparing it with that close up scene, I can easily see the eyes are 95% spot on. I'm sure we will have that usual bunch of complainers, but I'm beyond happy with mine. :maul

This was taken with a light right over the bust, so shadow plays a part; and, the pic was taken below its eye level. I can see how it may look off though. Look at the other pics though, and its easy to see just how flawless this piece is. :)

That Maul bust really does look awesome. I'm betting that any problem with lack of detail with the eyes isn't really noticeable when viewed from a normal distance, and how many people who see this are going to be putting their nose up to it to get a good look. I know if anyone gets that close to my stuff they better be holding their breath to not breath on it or I'll smack 'em upside the head...once they are a safe distance from the item of course!

I'm surprised that people are disapointed with this Maul, when the pic that
everyone is comparing it to is a pre-production piece that looks closer to
being a custom job than a regular street release.
For being a production piece, these eyes are NICE!
I'm all for calling out a Co if they do shoddy work... but this instance isn't 1
of them. I suggest you all add a couple of layers of clear coat with a small
brush to get that glassy / watery eye look. That's the ONLY thing this piece needs.
Way to go sideshow.

Nice pics Rock, awesome addition to your collection.
After looking at lc's pics of the ardeth day bust I can see where a lot of the "lack of detail" on Maul complaints may be coming from. The eyes on ardeth are scary realistic looking. I mean this bust is so well done its creepy. The detail is just shockingly good.
OK back to Maul.
Ray Park probably had some pretty severe contacts to wear to achieve this Sith look. They aren't going to look like "normal" eyes, with a myriad of colors in them. There's red, there's yellow, like a sunburst almost, but simple, lacking the subtle color variances in the normal human eye. So the bust does look extremely accurate. I agree the colors in the first pic looked a little flat, giving the bust a sort of dead look to it. Probably flash or photo related. The skin texture is extremely well done though and is teh first thing I noticed abiout this bust and commented on here or somewhere else.
Unfortunately I'll never own this piece (my wife would kill me and my daughter would have serious nightmares) so I have to appreciate this one through pictures. As far as speculating on pictures, well I can only reiterate that some of us will never own this piece so its all we can do. I hope to see more pics of this one too.
So I hope those of you that got one of these are very satisfied and help those of us who can't get one for whatever reasons enjoy it through your collection photos.

This is the main reason I stayed away fro mthe 1:1 busts. I honestly have NO place to put them. I plan to move in the next year or so into a bigger house, but they still take up a lot of space and I limit my collection to ONE room with my big screen TV. Assume everything else plays out the same. Palps still trys to lure Anakin over, but because Qui Gon rules so much Anakin never falls. The war still happens, Palps still watches the Dooku/Anakin battle and Anakin still wins. Dooku is dealt with.
Mace/Palps fight still happens....Qui Gon trained Anakin does not save Palps....Palps dead. Sith done. :chew

OK This something that need to be clear in the minds of Star Wars fans EVERYWHERE:
The Jedi brought the force out of balance as much as the Sith. Thats why Anakin was needed because he simultaneously destroyed all Jedi and all Sith as well as creating the means for a new Jedi order.
It was a dirty job but someone had to do it.
Plus Quigon would have left the Jedi Order as soon as Yoda and Mace decided to be generals.
