View Full Version : UNIVERSAL MONSTERS...WHO COLLECTS THEM ON THIS BOARD?

ALL RIGHT, OFFICIAL SOUNDOUT HERE. Who collects Universal Monsters on this site and what do you have? I officially collect everything Sideshow has unleashed. I have all of the 8" figures still carded, all of the 12" figures in the boxes, and all the 1/4 scale PFs (displayed) and the Ardeth Bust. The only items I don't buy are the Silver Screen variants. I like the color versions. But I am beginning to feel that there are not that many Uni-Mons out there. Perhaps we could make our own "Save the planet of the apes" type thread out of this? Also, does anyone have any information on any Universal announcements? Ardeth was announced quite a while back and since then, there has been nothing.

I am! I'm young, so I can't afford the PF or the busts, but I have collected most of the 8" figures (either as color or as SS), and I have a few of the 12" figures. I only get the 12" figures I want, and as of now, the only 1/6th scale characters Sideshow hasn't made yet that I would kill for, are a Claude Rains Phantom, and Colin Clive as Baron Henry Frankenstein.
Plus any true Universal fan can see that I'm a nut by looking at my Screenname!

Yes the Universal Monster fans are here! I've been collecting most all of it since the very first 8" figures, which I would liked to have seen a few more of. Let's hope there are more 12" figures on the way, but I will be happy to see any UM releases. I still have a lengthy want list, much similar to what has been posted by others. Keep going SS!

At one time I had all the regular 8" figures including the translucent Creature and Mutant. I also had an entire set of Little Big Heads. I ended up selling them all for space reasons. Space is also why I don't collect the PFs. I do have most of the 12" figures including the SSEs. I love the packaging for the SSEs with no plans on selling my 12" collection. I also have the Monster Legacy DVD gift set with the mini-busts. Anyone who doesn't have that should pick it up.

Of course I collect the Universal Monsters! I have been a huge monster fan since the age of about 7 or 8, which is about 39 years ago! I have most all of the Sideshow Universal and Classic monster items, including the LBH's, 8" figures, 12" figures and of course, the Premium Format figures and the Ardeth Bey is on the way. I have most of my original Aurora monster models from the late 60's and early 70's, and the Polar Lights reissues from a few years ago. I have many books on the Universal monsters and the actors in my library. At one time I had a near complete collection of Famous Monsters of Filmland, but sold them in the early 90's; I hope to recollect them one day. I have a bunch of other stuff, but not a huge collection. :frank :mummy :blackbat :rip

I have all the 1/9th scale carded color figures, and all the 1/6th scale color versions MOC or NRFB. I also have duplicates of most of the figures that I really have strong feelings for like Dracula, original Frankenstein's Monster and the Wolfman. I've done some kitbashes with these figures as well with a Nazi Frankenstein and Cossack Dracula among others. I love the Universal action figure lines. Haven't gotten any statues or busts yet, but maybe one day.

I have every 1/6 Uni Monster, including SSEs, MIB, but if I ever get my act together in regards to display cases, I'll open them all! I even have the Christmas Frankie and Drac; the only piece I don't have is the SSE Son of Frankenstein, that was limited to only 10 pieces. If the chance to get one at a decent price ever arises (yeah, right!), I'd like to get that one as well. I have Frankenstein's Monster, Dracula, and Wolf Man 1/4 PFs as well, the color versions. I had all the 8" carded UNIs as well, but sold them to concentrate on the 1/6 figures.

I also am a Uni Monster collector. :mummy
I started collecting Uni Monster stuff back in the 70's with the Remco 3 3/4 figures and the Mego figures. For some reason I just fell in love with the movies. Ever since then I've been adding to my collection.
Lucky for me I was a 1/6 figure collector also so when SS started doing 1/6 Monsters I of course started buying them and eventually the 1/4 figures as well. Now my collection spans from figures, masks, bed sheets:monkey4 , glasses, models, checks, posters, clothing...the list goes on.
I collect tons of other stuff but the Universal Monsters are always #1. :D

I actually got him last year at a very good price (less than what figures like Human Spike and Patient Zero have gone for) from one of the original winners, who is a board member but doesn't post very often. Keep looking for him, you never know when you just might get lucky like I did! And Thanks again to that board member for the great deal! :chew :chew :chew

Monster fan from way back(like, before a lot of you guys were born). Don't have every one, but I have made an effort to get at least 1 version of every character, and I have all the color 8"figures( the ones that started this madness). As time passes and opportunity arises, I acquire more...PS

I'm the kind of collector that gets bored of something and I move on to something else. For instance, I originally started collecting older monster figures from the 70's (Remco and Mego primarily). After aquiring what I could afford of these, I moved on to model kits. I have all of Horizon Uni monsters, some Screamin' and many others from different companies. I also collected VHS first then DVD horror movies. I usually went after the more obscure titles, preferably B&W. I also collected posters, lobby cards and many books of old horror movies and their stars. As far as SS goes, I have all 1/9 figs, most LBHs, all 12" figures (except that damn SSE Son Of Frankie) & most PFs. As of this very moment I'm collecting DVDs again & PFs.

I don't collect them right now - though I do have the 12 inch Dracula figure - but this is a line I want to delve into in the future. Maybe I'll have an opportunity to do that over the summer since I doubt I'll have many Buffy figures to get (if any), and there really aren't a lot of 12 inch figures coming out this year.

glad to see that there are still a few of us out there!!1 MOOOHOOOHHAHAHAHAHA!!! Here are a few pics of my collection. "It's a modest enough collection but it has the benefit of authenticity" to quote George Zucco from Universal's "The Mad Ghoul". What do you fellow monster fans think?
Oh, and for the record, I am only 36 so I don't quite yet fit into the 40 year old part of the "40 year old virgin". :D Having been married for 13 years this July and 2 sons as a result...not to mention a really hot wife:monkey5 ...pretty much excludes me from the rest of that adjective as well. Although I will confess to being a major geek. The rest of my collection is up at eternal collector's website. If you have a cool collection, I suggest joining that group as well. This is a line that I keep wanting to get (1:6) but can never find pieces at the right price.
I very nearly got the Invible Man/Ardeth Bay from the offer in the newsletter the other week but the code ran out the day before.
I will start it at some point.

I was born again as a "Monster Kid" at the impressionable age of 8 when the syndicated Shock Treatre packages debuted in New York in 1957, hosted by that "Cool Ghoul," Zacherley. I've been collecting monster memorabilia ever since, focusing primarily on the classic Universal films, with an emphasis on the Frankenstein Monster, in particular.
I like a lot of variety in my collection, and back in Sideshow Toy's UM heyday, they really delivered for me in that regard. Action Figures, Pozers, Polystone statues, Bobble-Heads, Little Big Heads, Shredders, Wrestlers, Key Chains, Shot Glasses, Monster Mountain, Halloween Buckets, whatever they produced, I happily bought.
The only Sideshow UM product I don't collect are the 12-inch and PF Silver Screen Editions, although I do have a SSE 12" Frankenstein's Monster. I also passed on the Holiday Dracula when it was originally offered for sale at SC's site — I thought it was over-priced at the time (D'oh! — nor do I have a Holiday Frankenstein's Monster.
I also have quite an array of merchandise from other manufacturers: Figures from Remco, Mego, Marx, Hasbro, Jaxx, X-Plus, and Funko; Calendar Masks from Don Post; Model kits from Aurora, Polar Lights, and Revell; Resin Kits; Busts from Cine Arts; Bobble-Heads from Forever; Kubricks and Bearbricks; Puppets; Environments and accessories from Hawthorne Village and Department 56; Musical snow-globes from Westland Gifts; An animated, singing (Monster Mash) Frankenstein's Monster and Bride from Gemmy; Stamp sets from the USPS; A Frankenstein's Monster Beer Stein from Anheuser-Busch/Ceramarte; Super-8 shorts, tapes and DVDs; Posters and prints and stills; Books; Candles; Magnets; Buttons; the list goes on.
As far as info on upcoming releases, there have been rumors of a PF wrapped Mummy for a while, a PF Gill Man is reportedly in the works, and more 1:1 busts are said to be planned. I'm now the same age as Bela Lugosi was when he appeared in Son of Frankenstein, and I really hope we eventually see "Old Ygor" produced as a 12-inch figure. There's a quartet of Karloff characters I'd love: "Hjalmar Poelzig" from The Black Cat, Janos Rukh from The Invisible Ray, "Edmond Bateman" from the Raven, and "Mord the Executioner" from The Tower of London.
Since a Colin Clive "Henry" seems doubtful due to rights issues, Ernest Thesiger's "Dr. Pretorious" and Basil Rathbone's "Wolf" would help fill the gap left by the absence of any of the "Men Who Made The Monsters." And we have got to have Lionel Atwill as "Inspector Krogh!" We need some women, too: Gloria Holden's "Countess Marya Zaleska from Dracula's Daughter, and Elsa Lanchester as "Mary Shelly" and Una O'Connor as "Minnie" from Bride of Frankenstein. Finally — I suspect I'm alone on this one (Okay, and with Una, too, I suppose) — but a PF figure of Charles Ogle's loopy incarnation of the monster from Edison's 1910 production of Frankenstein would be great, and a nice companion to the Vampyre.
And, Anton, your collection is very impressive, particularly your autographs. Is that a Chaney, Sr. behind your PF Phantom? Not an easy one to come by, to say the least. I've considered adding some autographs to my collection, and seeing yours is very inspiring.

It is indeed a Chaney Sr., and it was no easy task to obtain an authentic one, I can tell you that. I searched on and off for years before I actually saw one that was really a great example of his hand and from a dealer who had a reputation that was literally unheard of in the field. It was not cheap...but I had to have it. Whats really cool about it is that its on an old style introduction card that they used to send over with bottles of wine and what not back in the day. Matted out is an illustration of a man and a woman dancing and calligraphy that says "Social" as the letterhead. Only thing visible after the archival matte work is the actual signature. Here is a clearer shot. I just picked up a Henry Hull signed card and an Elsa Lanchester signed card and a Jonathan Frid signed 8 x10. My brother is an expert museum quality framing and matting expert. So, I often put him to work for me. Always happy to share my collection. Sounds like you have a terrific one yourself. Can I see some pics?

That's beautiful framework on that Chaney picture and autograph!
I also have an autographed Jonathan Frid pic, but it's an odd size (6x9) and I still have to get a frame for it. It's currently in my curio where I really can't admire it because it's amongst all my other DS stuff. It's signed JF and "Barnabas".

SO, Ardeth Bey is limited to only 100. Do you guys think the line will continue? If so, do you think they will all be as limited as Ardeth? Or do you think more popular characters like Bela Lugosi/Dracula and Karloff/Frankenstein Creature from the black lagoon will be more in quantities manufactured? I havent heard alot of Universal Announcements from SS lately. Anyone heard any rumors as to whats going to be offered up next? I am very glad to see that there are so many Universal Monster collectors on this board!

This is why I am currently dissapointed in Sideshow. They are spending way too much time on "More important" things like Star Wars, and even modern horror (to an extant), that they have currently turned their backs on what put them on the map in the first place!
Come on Sideshow? Where's our Claude Rains Phantom, or Baron Frankenstein (either Clive or Rathbone)?

Actually, that figure (10) is for the SILVER SCREEN EDITION SON OF FRANKENSTEIN; the Christmas Frankie number of 400 is accurate. There was a similar Dracula figure done the following year (red flannel pjs!), and then Sideshow stopped this practice. It's a shame, as I really wanted a Christmas Wolf Man to go with the other two! :D

Ahhh yes, the moving and house selling days. My last move was in 1999. I didn't have my things boxed up yet. As a result, the children of people who wound up purchasing the home went on a hey day at our home. The ragamuffins destroyed a gold anklet my wife had and opened a guitar case and put their grubby booger encrusted fingers all over the guitar inside. It was a gift for my father in law and had to be cleaned before we could give it to him. But the worst atrocity was that they touched my Aurora Monster Models and snapped my Mummy's snake off the base! I nearly had a heart attack. So, you are quite wise to have your goodies pre-boxed.
Thanks for the kind words about the collection. I love to share with fellow Universal Monster fans. When you get your stuff unboxed, though, I wanna see it. I wanna see it all!!!!!:chew

Finally got my Gillman (Creature from Black Lagoon). God, he's amazing! An incredible portrait by Oluf, and the bodysuit is astounding! Very well done. I think the $100 I paid is stepping over a bit, but I'm pretty happy overall. I may be compelled to accessorize him a bit more, but I won't be repainting this one. This is one of those rare figures that's perfect right out of the box.
Today was also huge because I got another Oluf creation in the mail at the same time!! My Knight Who Says Ni was a special deal Oluf offered me on a Knight he wasn't selling because the box was shot to hell. And it was. THe box is lousy with holes, bends, and all manner of defects. Doesn't matter to me, since I was going to open him no matter how nice the package was, so trearing it open was a no-brainer. But the real topper is Oluf was kind enough to sign the figure itself for me. He signed it on the base under the skirt. It sort of shimmers through the cloth a bit. I think I got an incredible deal!!! Great man. Great artist. I'll be his shill forever. Buy more of his stuff!!!

Great pics of the collection Anton! I too collect Universal Monsters and stated with the smaller Sideshow line. With their environmental styled bases they quickly brought to mind the classic Aurora kits from my youth.
I took the plunge into the 12 inch figures as well, but I've chosen to pass on the Silver Screen edition of all of the figures. Although beautifully rendered, I cannot affor the duplicity in my collection (and it smacks a little of double dipping). I would have bought them in the Silver Screen format if that was how they were originally introduced.
I still have to pick up Ardeth Bey, the Invisible Man, and the Hunchback to complete my 12" figures - but part of me doesn't want to do it, knowing that this is most likely end of the line - and when I finally buy them it will be bittersweet.
As far as the PF Universal line goes the only one I've purchased to date is the Phantom. Frankenstein looked a tad too 'Overstuffed" for my tastes. The Lugosi is beautiful, but I'm not that big of a Dracula fan. I am impressed with the Wolfman as well.
No 1:1 busts yet, but I am on the waiting list should one fall through the cracks.
