I like acrylics.

Ditto. Acrylics are the way to go. Choose a thin paint, like Testors Acryl. Thick paints like Liquitex tend to glop into the details, muddying up the sculpt.

THe number of layers depends on whether you want to weather something or fully repaint it. As far as techniques, I like doing a wash in a dark color and then a bit of drybrushing in a lighter shade. Really brings out detail. If you are going to fully repaint from scratch, I highyl reccomend spraying a lyer of primer to cover up the original apps and give the paint a surface it will easily adhere to.

I started really customizing and painting after viewing Tony DiTerlizzi's page at RebelScum.com (http://www.rebelscum.com/tonymain.asp). That was my jumping off point. He's got a lot of great tips for painting. You should check him out!
