Looks like Arnie Kim could have done it. Still at least we can upgrade a lot of the Sideshow stuff now.

Agree, good but not great. Trevor's sculpt is still better, and I like Sideshow's idol pedestal better too.
Crap! How much is this going to cost me?!?
paulcarson
12-24-2010, 07:29 AM
Beats me why Sideshow / Hot Toys wouldn't use a Trevor Grove sculpt ? This could have been the ultimate 1/6 Indy. At the moment I'm thinking Raymond's custom is miles ahead of this.
I dunno, it may grow on me.

I think it looks grand.
It's got the map room outfit. The whip looks a lot better. The belts look wrong, but I'm not that up on it, I wanted to get an mfisher set anyways. I'm bummed that it comes with the idol base. I don't want that, and I don't want to pay for it.
It looks like the bag of sand, might actually be a bag of sand, and not a plastic sculpted piece. And I even see Abner's journal in there too.

Ray's is certainly amazing!!! But honestly I really think both are as good as one another

this is one of those times where i'm glad i held out on picking up a fig. like right now, i'm taking a huge gamble with the T2 line. i held out on buying arnold in hopes that HT will release a more 'complete' version of him down the line. if they don't, i might end up paying more than retail.
IMO, SSC did an ok job with their indy fig, but it wasn't good enough for me to pick up, hoping HT would take a crack at it. after these two teaser images, IMO, HT did an amazing job with this. i think the sculpt looks fantastic, however, the lighting might be throwing it off just a bit.
can't wait to see more pics...or better yet, can't wait for this sucka to be released.
RollingJ
12-24-2010, 07:59 AM
Wow, I really hope they do a better job on the Reeve sculpt. Need to see more angles but this one can't touch the Grove sculpt IMHO.
Very surprised to see the pedestal in there, but again, I think I prefer the SSC one.
Might have to pick up the shirt off eBay, but other than that my wallet is starting to breathe a sigh of relief!
Good, but Trevor's sculpt is MMMMMILES ahead!!!

I love the fact the pedstal is being inculded too cool!!!!!
Yeah from what I can see the HS isn't up to HT normal standrads. However, I belive it will get there. HT has way of improving sculpts along the way until it's really good.

Looks good. Nothing to ____ your pants over, imo. Trevors Sideshow sculpt is better.
Agreed, pity that such a nicer paint job and production quality will be put to a lesser portrait. The likeness is there, but, the expression is a bit TOO serious to me.

OPINIONS
-Trev's sculpt is a better overall representation of Indy.
-Paint apps look great on the portrait.
-Leather coat is decent but still glad I have a Sovereign jacket, it doesn't look quite like Indy's enough.
-Idol pedistal looks good and ought be plastic so overall cost isn't bad, and having not gotten Sideshow's, glad for its inclusion.
-Rest of the costume and accessories look good from the distant view.
-Might be the angle and lighting, but hat seems a bit off in that look.
-Whip looks nice, have to see how they handle it, if two like Sideshow where one can be posed and one more for sitting in the holster, or maybe just one that can be posed and easily and nicely coiled into the holster.
-Assuming he has PERS, it's nice to see that HT won't make all PERS heads with really open eyes for the PERS feature and will do what's right for the character.
At the moment, it seems like a self contained figure and won't need any outside parts other than the coat, at least for me, I'm not such a detail freak on Indy as to spot all the small things, just the bigger ones.

I'm pretty sure the headpiece is on the staff, I think the way it's laying on the table and the angle of the photo are making it look like a sharp point on the staff cuz we're seeing it at profile.

So far I think it looks great, definitely still on the purchase end for me and I like the HS personally. Besides, as others have said, just a prototype.
Besides what we see here, looks like there is something "ALIEN" themed in the background. Can't tell what the other figure is though.

Guys, do you really think that Sideshow 1/6 Indy without any mods is better than that or equivalent? :thud:
Must be on drugs... :peace
This one looks pretty good, but still I'm not happy with his face, it's still not Harrison. Ford has bad luck in 1/6, no one can make him right! :D Trevor too. That's sad.
Also, being not so hardcore Indy fan, I'm pretty disappointed with the Bedouin cloth set. :\ Can't see the Horus Talisman yet, hope that they'll put it there in the end. Otherwise that would be an EPIC FAIL. But I was expecting nazy soldier uniform and bazooka.
Agree with MaulFan, the eyes looks nice here, much more better than in the other DX line. Now I have big expectancies on the DC Jack Sparrow.
Wonder what do we have under his hat?...

Seems like I'd be more impressed with the sculpt if there was no PERS. I like his seriousness (something I thought was missing from Sideshow's) but nothing else about him makes me see Sideshow's as a lesser offering. I do wonder how it will look when it ships. They have a way of improving on prototypes.

Few shots about face. It's not perfect, but I think that it's not bad too. Don't forget that Ford here is very young, in the Grail he looks much more older, so don't tangle them both.

I'm underwhelmed at the moment, and I really wanted to be overwhelmed.
I'd have liked a second headsculpt instead of the Idol pedestal. The Map Room outfit isn't a very exciting addition.
Too early to really comment on the sculpt itself, without more angles and better lighting. I do like the earnest expression, though.
The quality will no doubt be apparent in hand, which will blow Sideshow (as good as that figure is) out of the water. And with the expected pricepoint, it had better be good!

It's cool that Sideshow is allowing Hot Toys to do a figure of Indy's stunt double!
Seriously though, all the people who have filed these boards up with Hot Toys threads I'm sorry to say that from first impressions this doesn't look to put the Sideshow Indy to shame; it does not look like Harrison Ford.

I'm pretty agree with you. I don't know why, but HT really afraid to give some expressions to their dolls faces. :(
I could be wrong, but I can mention only Leonidas screaming head in 2010. All other was like: "Mmmmm, I'm so boring standing on this shelf..." or "What's there, in the far distant???..." Still can't see Ezio head, he looks SO F DEAD! >< Good that he's under the hood...
Anyway, I would like to see Ford with his cheeky smile. And probable I'll never get it. :monkey2

Easy way to fix jacket texture:
1) mix some good matt varnish and wooden ash.
2) paint jacket with it.
3) get profit.

A lot if it is licensor approval. I read they made some great expressions for Tony Stark, but RDJ's people would only approve neutral sculpts.
But yes, I too wish the sculpts had more engaging expressions. All neutral is very boring.
I wish Indy was smirking. I wish Hans Landa was smirking.

It's not terrible but it's not good either as far as ford goes. It's a nice sculpt of fords stunt double. The rest of it looks good though I do like my custom map room outfit better. I will probably order it just to make sure but as of now this needs work.

The only thing I think they could "improve" is the coat, but other than a customized one, I don't think you'll ever get the right jacket, it has such a unique look to it.
I don't think the sculpt needs improving, just a better choice of expression, the one they chose is done very well though, it looks like an angry Ford.

Im glad its a serious expression. To be honest I was never crazy about he half smirk on Trevor's sculpt (even though it is a better likeness). It was a bit awkward, and made him look like he just farted or something.

Looks great to me... maybe the sculpt isn't as spot-on as what Trevor has done. But the final paint apps will crush what Sideshow gave us.
And when you consider the cost of upgrading a Sideshow figure (new body and repainted head) you're probably gonna end up in DX price territory.

Hmm, not as blown away as I was expecting to be. It's still very nice though. The jacket could definitely use some work, material looks a bit too shiny. A second headsculpt would be great, but only if they included a full second outfit (sans jacket) to go under the robe, otherwise it'd be a bit useless. You can't have Indy going commando in the maproom.

More, much more, man. ;) You'll need to get new body, pay for head repaint, buy Idol Env. from Beloq. It would be much more than DX. ;)

Head repaint alone could do that. If you got Indy at retail, that's about $90, a good repaint probably runs $50-$100, you're close to $200 just to fix the head on the figure, then there's the costuming fixes.

I was at least hoping to be blow away by something, i could care less about the map room stuff too...i just don't think that's "Indy" if he was displayed that way, i certainly oppose posing indy next to indy.

My first impressions looking at these initial pics of HT's Indy prototype is they've done a pretty nice job in capturing the look and feel of the Indy character. I'm sure there will be improvements. If I recall some folks were not impressed with the initial T-1000 likeness, but when the figure was released, the final sculpt turned out much better than the prototype.

We already got the Sideshow Indy which had it's plusses, now we're getting the HT Indy which has it's plusses. We have lots of custom parts out there.
The bottom line is, I think between Sideshow, customs and Hot Toys, all the parts are floating around for everyone to make themselves a Raiders Indy figure for their collection that is everything they could want it to be.

I have hopes the head sculpt will be improved. Everyone was saying how bad the Iron Man Mark 4 RDJ Head looked horrible, now that it is in hand the consensus seems to have shifted, I am sure this will be the same case with this figure.
I do think it looks better than Sideshows Indy figure. The difference between SS and HT is SS's prototypes look better than the actual figure, while HT's Prototypes look worse than their final product.
I will most likely wait and see, but the addition of the alter and Map room outfit make this one a strong contender for my money.

Looking at it again I noticed that the belt has a leather keeper instead of a metal one.. so his belt is more accurate for LC.. possibly TOD if it is long enough... I will never understand how companies land such an awesome license but fail to pay attention to details... you'd think there would be at least one serious Indy nerd over there that would QC these things before they go into production... in the end we do have more fodder for building up a very fine Indy figure... but right out of the box nobody has gotten it right... which to me, is part of the fun with this hobby.. I like building my figures to make them just right.. makes it a personal project...

Judging from the full display pic, it looks like you'll need a second body, head and full outfit minus the jacket (you could also get away with not having the gun belt and stuff under there). I would hate to see what the head and boots are going to go for on the secondary market. :thud:

Ultimately, there's usually something wrong with EVERY figure, be it inaccurracy or something not done as well as it could be. We might feel some figures we get are 100% right to us personally, but, with unbiased scrutiny, something can ALWAYS be found wrong.

Really a let down, to me. Don't get me wrong, it looks nice. But I don't give a crap about cardboard cheesy backgrounds, and those odd angular bases. And I think it's a big slap in the face to do another version of the pedestal when most of us who bought sideshows already got it to go wit him.
Then there is the headsculpt, which better get improved on..
And really? That's all they could come up with for accessories?
This was gonna be a sure buy for me.
Now, I'm seriously reconsidering. For the price it will fetch, I might just settle for my sideshow version.
I'll have to see more pics, but yeah, a bit of a let down for me.

Holy crap, Metal Gear? Wowee! But the more I look at Indy the more I like it, does it blow away Trev's sculpt? No. But I am not digging the fedora so much, I was hoping for a Chris Taylor type of hat situation. Oh well. Also I wish his nose was a little crooked like the Trevor sculpt which is accurate to Ford's actual likeness. This may require two purchases. Also to the douche ____ting on SS's Indy ON A SIDESHOW forum, you're sounding stupid. So stop. Merry Christmas to those that can be constructive and remember their wouldn't be a HT Indy without a SSC Indy! :lecture

agreed! I initially never bought the SS version. Not b/c I didnt want it, but b/c I never really new it existed haha but once I found out and saw all the extra things needed to do to make it "right" it was something I wasn't looking forward to. So luckily HT saved the day fir me when they announced the DX :D from the pics it's looks great, yea too clean and not enough Ford YET but we know HT if not more than usual, goes back and tweaks the sculpt. In my opinion, the Hot Toys version blows anything before it away, including every custom i have seen. Sideshow's has always been a bit underwhelming, including Trevor's sculpt. I have seen so many repaints of Trevor's head and not one looks as good in my eyes. The tailoring of Hot Toys outfit, the fabrics chosen all look fantastic. This is the Indiana Jones to get. I'm, reallywilling to bet it's a lot closer to what you see below than anything else:
- Hatted head with the top magnatized to reveal PERS
- Alternate Hatless Head
- Sculpted spare Hat
- Indiana Jones Outfit (standard)
- head scarf and robe (Ark extraction disguise) (i find it unlikely we get any other outfit, not prof outfit and ESPECIALLY not German disguise)
- real whip
- lots of different hands
- gloved hands
- shovel
-crate
-snake (s)
- Base with Fertility idol
I also don't think you will see any figure other than Iindy. Perhaps TOD Indy would be another non-dx release
Hahaha look! I told you so! and I had only one felow agree with me.
I'm surprised how much I don't love it so far. I probably would have if i did not already have my custom... which I think has a better ovrall everything thanks to the guys who worked on him.

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree. The outfit and tailoring yeah I would probably give the edge to HT but the likeness is not even in the same area code. If it improves I will get this beyond me placing an order if not I'm quite happy with my SS Indy figures cause they actually look like Ford.

The sculpt is obviously disappointing. HT can do a lot better, so hopefully the HS will be improved until it is released. But so far, SS's Indy is infinitely better, and with a repaint can be awesome.

I'm a bit torn personally.
I love that this comes with so much stuff -- especially the Arab Disguise with staff and headpiece! Even his little notepad.
I'm not very happy with some of the clothing for an HT product:
The belts are the wrong color here -- web and holster.
The jacket isn't quite what I was hoping (more like what I feared) -- it's better than Sidshows -- what IS good though most importantly, HT got the length right!!! So that makes up for some but the jacket still isn't "distressed" enough.
The sculpt I'm willing to wait on better pics to make the final call...but so far, yes, Trev's beats it hands down.
Yes, the shoes are more detailed but that white stripe bugs me. Look like dockers or deck shoes.
Maybe I'm back in the upgrade business after all.
Sovereign must be breathing a sigh of relief.

Guess I am in the minority here, but I think this figure looks amazing! Definitely will be getting one. This will be my first HT figure and I can't wait!
So, no Star Wars figures then? Can't say that I am not just a little relieved by that.
Not totally that impressed, especially with the head sculpt. HT have got better jobs done.

Hey WorGor.. the boots are actually perfect replicas of Aldens right out of the shoe box.. obviously the screen worn boots don't still have that lighter colored leather on the sole's edge.. but brand new they do.. just need to weather them up really good and you'll have perfect Indy boots... these even look better than the newlines in terms of accuracy....

I'm still getting the HT Indiana Jones. Been waiting a long time in order to get the right piece. I like the fig alot.

My criticisms aside, I will be getting this.
Worst case, I get Arab Indy with staff of RA and I can upgrade my SS Indy with the HT bits that don't show (jacket, shirt, etc).
So ultimately its a win-win.
I have a feeling the out-of-the-box figure will be better than these pictures.
And with PERS, maybe we can get a better look out of the sculpt. Maybe eyes slightly raised and determined looking.

No, I know they're accurate, just so new and clean that they don't look like Indy's. Once you weather them you won't see the stripe, so what's the point.
I just meant that it throws my eyes to that white stripe when I'm looking at the figure. Rather have filthy shoes.

12-24-2010, 10:42 AM
I've always wanted a really filthy, messed up INDY, like post truck chase...
So now, I can finally take the risk and do that with my SS Indy without feeling like if I screw up I have no other 'cleaner' Indy.
Of course, that would require 2 HT Indys (one for clean and one for Arab)... this is becoming like the T-1000 where you now need a second body, pants, bag, shoes, sculpt... :slap

With as much info thats out there on Indys gear theres no reason this shouldnt be HTs most accurate and lauded figure.

Then perhaps I wasn't talking about you, but if you want to take it personally, that's your beef.
I paid good money for Sideshow's figure, direct from them, based on prototype images that looked very nice. The production figure looked far away from what was originally solicited. It is well within my rights to complain about that.
I'm liking what I see so far. This might be my first Indiana Jones figure...kind of glad I didn't buy any of the SSC or Medicom ones now.

Looks alot like the Arnie Kim, he did a few years ago. I'm wondering if the hat comes off like on the Chris from Platoon with the extra hair. Also I think the idol stand is made of plastic like the Iron man lab robot, so the set may not be too expensive, maybe 169.99.

Thats the thing for me. If the likeness doesn't get better I just can't order this myself. Especially with what this will cost. Honestly, they're adding a idol piece I have from SS, map room (which I think the custom I have looks way better), basically the same items that the SS one came with, etc. The outfit I do think looks better so far but I think the Jacket needs to be closer to the Wolverine texture I think.

Love it, can't wait to buy it! Thanks for all the photos, especially the larger versions(wallpaper replaced).
It's Hot Toys.
Their final product is often way better than an initial sculpt.
Two examples:
The Rocky4 figure pics which looked like a cartoon Sly.
The final sculpt was awesome.
Bruce Lee's body which was ultra ripped. They have now released pics 6 months later of a much more natural body - and they are still working on improving.
Indy will look like Ford when he is released.

I am still befuddled over the decision to include the idol base... why ??? Sideshow's piece was all we needed... very goofy decision... a piece of the maproom floor would have made sense... or hell.. just more accessories... maybe his transit on a tripod for display with the maproom robe.. shovel, rope.. something... but another idol base... groan.... give us something new we can use.... again.. I am in no way jumping into this girlie pissing match over sideshow's Indy vs. HT's.. (which is really ridiculous... reading through here I have come to the conclusion that a number of you really need to step back and notice that this is nothing but a good thing for collectors... more choices mean better customs.. period... stop getting so bent over different opinions and be happy with the fact that we now have something more than the old 80's Kenner 12 inch and the Toys McCoy !!) .... but anyhoo.....

First thing i noticed of HT's Indy sculpt is the eyebrows... hmm...might be the lighting/camera...
As far as 1/6th scale Indy head sculpts goes... I still reckon Jim Maddox first Indy head is the best... even thought the sculpt is rough compare to today's standard but he definitely nailed it. All it needs is a good resculpting and fine tunning and get that HT treatment.

War, I am willing to waiger that this will be a hit for Hot Toys, just like the Terminator figures and Pirates figures. People always try and find fault in the beginning, especially this board. There also appears to be a huge loyalty to Trevor here, which is ok. So anything short of shrinking Harrison Ford down, would be a letdown. I looked into the customs thread and the only Indy that looks as good as if not better is the one with the shrunken down PF sculpt. Other than that, I honestly don't see anything that compares. I also feel that Hot Toys will alter this and tweak it some more which will make it even better.

Unless sales are exceptional, which I doubt. People are already dissatisfied. Wait until the price tag hits.
Yeah, thats the thing if they don't fix the sculpt (at least from my POV) then I just don't see this garnering more figures.
Yeah I see what you have had to say and I can see where you are coming from. I'm really happy with it, but I am sure they will improve it
I'm trying to be constructive. :lol It looks like a potentially great figure from what we've seen. I'm sure they will as well. I've never not seen them fix things so I have hope they will. Which is of course why I will be placing an order.

I like Sideshows sculpt and jacket look better, but everything else HT all the way.
I'll take awesome paint aps and a sculpt that looks like the character any day.

I don't usually get drawn into speculation threads but it's Indy and I can't resist. I don't think there is anything wrong with criticisms as long as HT get the message and improve him. This is clearly going to be an expensive figure and I will not part with my money unless the sculpt justifys it. Some have said that people always criticise at first, but I actually think first impressions are extremely useful. If I do not instantly recognise the likeness to be accurate then it needs to be tweaked. The mk IV Stark sculpt is still not 100% - the eyes are still wrong - but I think many have gotten used to it and accepted it's faults. I don't want to accept faults in such an iconic figure, so I think I is fair enough that we ask for better. Sorry for rambling! I was really excited for this and it currently doesn't look much better than the CM head :-(

Its not loyalty to Trevor. Its just that of all the sculptors we've seen take a crack at Ford he's been the one to nail it time after time. This sculpt right now from HT is just off. I'm not sure what it is but something isn't there. It appears they took Kim's sculpt and updated it a bit. Assuming HT does what has in the past I'm sure they'll fix it but will they be able to make it look like Ford that is the major question. With a character like Indy it has to look like Ford to order it.

And why is he wearing eyeliner? Looks like he's been taking fashion tips from Jack Sparrow...

Yup, if there's enough dissatisfaction with the sculpt, I could see Hot Toys redoing it.
I'll probably place a preorder to secure one and see what the final shipping figure looks like to decide to keep or not. Right now, I lean towards sticking with the Sideshow sculpt and picking up the shirt and belts from the HT figure, but if the sculpt is toned down to be less intense and more to my liking, I'll apply my Sovereign jacket to the HT figure. Possibilities to choose from, too early with this figure to know what path I'll be taking.

No eyeline, that's just the gap between the portrait and the PERS eyes.

Like I said at OSW, face needs work but I'll be waiting for the official release pictures before making the jump to on board for purchasing this beauty.

I am still befuddled over the decision to include the idol base... why ??? Sideshow's piece was all we needed... very goofy decision......
Not every one bought the Sideshow one. I didn't want that Bellog and wasn't going to pay that much just for the Idol base. You can always sell the Hot Toys base.

I like the Indiana franchise but I have never felt the need for a figure really. When I see those pictures I don't see 100% Harrison Ford, sorry. Everything else looks fantastic tho. So many accessories etc.
Never had a DX so hopefully with some work on the head sculpt this can change my mind.

Same here, and I imagine a lot of people who wanted the base couldn't pull the trigger on that Belloq.

That's what kept me from getting it, didn't want Belloq.

Mediocre, easy pass for me...
Anyone waxing poetically about this piece is just a crazed fan of the film that has been dying to see this as a HT piece. Meh...for those that love it, enjoy.
