I personally don't mind the exclusives. They don't sell out super fast, and if you just order them right away then you've ensured you've got one waiting for you, and if you decide you don't want it later just cancel.
So far the only exclusive I've felt was worth the extra cost for the Sideshow price was Vlad. But I think offering more accesories to the die-hard collectors is a good idea.

I like the exclusives, but I think that they shouldn't be limited. I think that Sideshow should be the only ones that sell them and have a limit on how many you can buy (just like now) but not be limited to like 500 or 666 or 750. I missed out on the Hellboy because of it being so limited, but I do love geting bounus accessories.
So, I say, keep doing them.

Please never stop the exclusives. Leave them limited as well so collectors get a true sense of a collectible. You snooze you lose as far as ordering them. There is normally enough time from the time ordered to the sell out time.

I'm not one that really worries about collectibility since I open everything, but despite myself I think it's kind of cool to have an exclusive version that's slightly different than the widely released one. Of course this forces me to buy two so I can open one and have one for "collectibility.":p
But from SSC's point of view, the exclusives stir up interest, spur the collector mentality, get people talking about the exclusives, drive up secondary market prices which calls attention to their new product and also serves to "give a little something back to the fans" as they say is the real reason for the exclusives. I can't really see it ending anytime soon, and I foresee a time when every figure has a limited exclusive.
But that's just my opinion, Sideshow's opinion may vary.

I would still rather the figure be available in a non limited capacity and if an "exclusive" were to be offered let it be a seperate "accessory pack" type of offering with the extra head, weapons or whatever offered only thru Sideshow. I, too, missed out on the exclusive Hellboy. Granted, I was never a Hellboy fan, hell [pun intended] I wasn't even familiar with the character until Sideshow announced him. I thought he looked kind of cool and now, having seen the trailers, well, I really would've liked the cigar munching version.

Please keep the exclusives! Exclusives help reward the faithful. If you miss out, check in more often. Pre-order sooner.
I think there should be some more 750 - 1000 range exclusives, but with the 2 piece limit so people do not make massive orders of the exclusives to scalp them.

I think the main problems people seem to have with exclusives is that for 'international' people the shipping costs are quite high, or they prefer to order locally.
The first point is the main problem I personally have with them. Sideshow's shipping prices are pretty terrible. Killertoys.com can ship a Sideshow figure (provided it's worth under $50) for $12.95USD whilst Sideshow charge $35USD.
It would be great if Sideshow offered USPS international air as a shipping option, or they worked with their current supplier to get costs down.

I like the exclusives - and another good reason for Sideshow is to drive buyers to their site, rather than other on-line retailers.
BTW, anyone keeping track of these things? I was trying to remember - wasn't the Knight Who Says Ni really the first (although this was a Sideshow web exclusive like Jaws and Q, and not an extra accessory)? Others that I remember:
Freddy VS Jason
Spike
Faith
Vlad
Kroenen
Hellboy
Bond/Thunderball
Hewitt Leatherface
Van Helsing
Anna Valerious
X-files Scully, CSM and Mulder
Others?

I think that's all the exclusive accessory figures. I imagine human Willow will be the next one.
