So, my "dollies" (as Mark would say...lol) needed a home and quite a while ago, I got the bright idea to build a curio. A friend of mine has the skills and I've got some sweat equity and ideas. Basically, been taking it a Sunday at a time and we are getting closer to being finished.

Here's some details: 91 3/4" high, 48" wide, 20" deep. Will have 3/8" glass shelves that will be etched with Star Wars emblems. Door will be a sliding picture frame style door.

Today, we basically cut the grooves in the back for shelf support and also crafted a few wooden supports for the back.

Here's a picture of the front view (with 12" battle droid in bottom for scale":

Jabba's Throne and Han in Carbonite will be in the bottom :)

That is a beautiful piece of carpentry, Yodacappy. Your collection of ‘dollies’ is going to look marvellous in there. Looking forward to seeing the etched glass.

Thanks! It's been a long process but very much worth it. Next weekend we'll start on the door. :)

I have no idea what a Curio is but it looks friggin big and chuffin coo!
A perfect home for your dollies..... humm wonder if the Mrs will let me build one?.....

hummm, I think I have more chance of the Pope, or solving world peace or breathing underwater!!!

Yoda , when you get close to done, I would love to know how much $$ you have invested in this. Materials and how many hours you spent on it. It will be interesting to see how much you saved versus just buying one.

The work you guys have done so far looks excellent. Can't wait to see the final product.

Biggest problem was that I couldn't find one that was the size I wanted with the sliding door (and it wouldn't have the etched shelves either but that could have been done after the fact). I could generally find the right width and depth but not the height that wanted. It's been more time consuming than costly but worth it as I've learned a lot. The other issue was that one this size wouldn't really fit in the house in one piece so this one is collapsable and can be taken apart for moving. :)

A curio is nothing but a fancy word for a display case. She might would go for it since it's furniture!

No picture can do justice to the size of this thing. Put it this way, in a room with a wall 8 feet high and 10 feet wide, this thing would take up almost half the width of the wall and almost touch the ceiling! :)

Lol nah the only way I could build something that HUGE, is if I got hurried in in... With all my dollies.... Now there is an idea

Worked some more on this beast of a curio. Nothing really picture worthy but what we worked on was getting the door bearings into the picture frame door. We should have that figured out and have some progress in the next session.

It has been very interesting but one more out of necessity for storage and display reasons LOL. Once we get the door done then it's just a matter of finishing, staining, etc. and it'll be done. :yess:

I know, I had to get some curios and cabinets for my collection as well, but everything to be done before moving to the new house.

Looking really nice so far. I can't wait to see how you finish yours w/ etched glass.

My sliding glass curio/ display measures at 61 1/2" L x 20" W x 74" H. I thought mine was big.

91 3/4" high.......that's massive :eek

Yeah, we are actually building it so that it can be taken apart when I move (whenever that might happen) and will have to actually assemble it in the room because the hallway isn't wide enough to maneuver it!

Great day in the shop today.

First, we crafted a couple of wedges that will be used to conceal the parts in the bottom of the curio that enable it to be taken apart to move it.

Then we fabricated 10 guidance bearings from scratch (5 for the top and 5 for the bottom of the door) that will enable the door to be the sliding picture frame style.

Here is a picture of what one of those looks like:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/Guidance_bearing.jpg

And then those are screwed into the bottom of the door frame and the top of the door frame and looks like this:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/bottom_door.jpg

Next session (hopefully next Sunday) will be routing the inside of the door, measuring for glass and starting the preparation for the finishing steps!

The door was a MAJOR hurdle for us.

As a side project, my Star Wars room is currently getting a makeover in the way of me putting laminate flooring down Saturday. :)

When we planned it out, I measured the hallway and the door area, used a piece of cardboard as a mock model and realized there was no way that was going to happen so we figured out how to make it so that it will actually be assembled inside the room. The great part is that it can also be disassembled when the time comes for me to move!

I'm putting down laminate flooring today and hopefully moving everything back in if everything goes as planned.

Tomorrow will be more work on the curio! :thud:

Ok, so today we built the door frame and cut the recess for the glass to set in. A couple of hiccups that we'll have to work out but that should be done soon.

Next step, is ordering the glass and doing some etching. After that, just a matter of doing the finishing!

Here's a picture of the door (sliding picture frame style). The ladder is there for scale, it's a 5 foot ladder.

Almost met my goal on the flooring. I have one more row to do and a small closet, some touch up on painting and re-installing baseboards and then moving everything back in. Once I finish, I'll post a picture before I move everything back in and then take pics with everything moved in.

Today is curio day! Hopefully, we'll get the door squared away and then we'll take measurments for glass and start the finishing process.

Yeah, that's the nature of the beast but it got conquered!

As for today, we still have a minor issue with the door so we'll need another work session on it and then we'll start the finishing process. As for the curio, it was a GREAT day today. We fixed the issue with the door and I'm now shopping for glass! :clap

Once I get the glass bought, we'll break that beast back down and begin the finishing process: sanding, staining and sealing.

Started prepping it for the finishing stages today. Most likely 3 work sessions to go until complete. Next one will be in 2 weeks and that will be fitting the glass, taking it apart and sanding it and finally staining it. The last two sessions will be sealing it.

Should be some new pics next session!

Also, started planning out the Yoda's Hut display and the dimensions for it. I've got most, if not all, of the material except for the acrylic but the plan is in place and I'll be working on that while the curio is drying.

Okay, so starting off the day it became apparent that an adjustment would need to be made to the backing for the mirrors to fit and have room for the shelves.

Here's the mirrors that will be behind all the shelves and figures:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/Mirrors.jpg

And here's the test run of the fitting to the back of the curio ( I had to actually stand on a chair to get most of it in the picture!):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/Shelves.jpg

To make the adjustment we needed to make a run to the big box store and while we were there we found the right color stain! Also, we picked up the adhesive for the mirrors and the extra material to correct the alignment.

Here are the infamous 4 foot long, 20 inch deep shelves:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/Mirrors_fitted.jpg

Next weekend, we'll be doing the routing work, mounting the mirrors and then working on shelf supports. If we are able to do two days then we'll also get into sanding and HOPEFULLY, staining.

Great session today. Hold on to your socks!

First, just for barryo--the infamous can of stain:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/stain.jpg

Okay, so we re-cut the dados for the mirrors to fit between and that will support the back of the shelves to begin the day and that was a success. Due to weather, we were unable to attach the mirrors BUT the show did go on as there's more to do.

So we decided to get on with etching shelves despite the weather which got VERY adventurous to say the least.

First, we cut out the 8 symbols for the shelves (2 on each). As fate would have it, they are 12 inch versions of the symbols. So 12 inch symbols for 12 inch figures!

We accomplished this by using a Cricut machine:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/cricut.jpg

After that, I had the task of finding the center point of each halve of the shelf:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/etch_center.jpg

Then we applied the negative of the symbol to the shelf in the center of the half it belonged:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/neg_applied.jpg

In the next step of preparation, the rest of the shelf was taped off so that only the part we wanted etched would get sandblasted:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/neg_app_taped.jpg

Then it was placed on a stand for blasting!:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/etch_setup.jpg

Fully etched but still taped and after battling the rain, watching our canopy blow over our heads, etc:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/Etching_finished.jpg

And then the nerdgasm of seeing the shelf finished! :

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/Finished_shelf.jpg

Next session will be Saturday!

Oh and here's a sneak peek of the Yoda's Hut Environment display work materials:

Love the etched glass shelves. Even if this ends up costing more than a ready-made curio, it will be a display you can be proud of.

It's costing far less really. A ton of labor but one this size alone would run $2,500 easy. I've got just a touch over $1,000 in this one.

You are exactly right though, the shelves really make it a one of a kind, Star Wars piece. It's going to be great to get it in the house, get it assembled and stocked!

TY. Thought you'd get a kick out of that can of stain pic. :lol

We would have done the other shelves but the weather was crazy. Should be able to get those done this Saturday though.

The symbols idea is really amazing. I had no idea how all that worked but fortunately my friend knows what he's doing and has plenty of experience and is passing it along to me which I'm very grateful for.

Happy to say that I snuck in a work session this weekend and we finished etching the rest of the shelves. As soon as I get the pics, I'll post them up.

We finally got to work on the curio again! :yess:

I got a couple of pictures that I'll add to this post later on.

We glued the 5 mirror pieces to the backboard of the curio. The pictures really don't show the size of this thing.

Also, we worked on the corner shelf supports (finishing work) and also working on polishing aluminum support braces to a mirror finish. They are going to look very snazzy!

Next tentative date is the 14th and we'll install the shelf supports and hopefully after that breaking it down for sanding and prepping for the staining/sealing process! I really can't wait to get it done and get my collection in it!

Okay here's the WIP pics:

Applying the mirror adhesive:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-1949-1333645194509.jpg

The first mirror glued on (15 1/4 x 48 inches):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-5075-1333637989166.jpg

The second mirror added:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-5667-1333638032742.jpg

The whole thing:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-4692-1333645399478.jpg

Polishing the aluminum supports was a chore. First did some sanding with sand paper, then a course grade of steel wool followed by a fine grade of steel wool and then applying Brasso and rotary polishing. Doing 4 of these took virtually an entire afternoon as they are 4 feet in length.

Yodacappy

Plan today is to finish the aluminum supports and get them mounted along with the back shelf supports. Then to break it down and start sanding!

I think you guys will be interested in seeing exactly how it's broken down for portability.

Okay, this was a great day! Pretty much the last session prior to finishing.

First, here are the front corner shelf supports that we installed:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-2761-1335134569253.jpg

And here's the aluminum shelf supports that I've been polishing to an almost mirror finish:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-9759-1335134589037.jpg

Next, we re-attached the back of the curio (with all mirrors firmly in place and cured):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-19653-1335134610395.jpg

And a picture with a shelf and a Hasbro 12" figure:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-16828-1335134637626.jpg

Each shelf should hold about 30 figures so I'll have room for 120 along with Jabba, Han in Carbonite and a few figures in the bottom. :yess:

And finally, a picture of the back shelf supports that I sanded down and beveled edges:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-2889-1335134652698.jpg

Next session will be breaking it down (and I'll take pictures of each component) and a day of sanding. :thud:

Okay, this is last pictorial update before it's complete :panic:

Yesterday, we took it apart to do some woodfilling and sanding. I thought I'd take pictures of the components so you could see how it disassembles. Because of the size of the thing, this was a necessity. It will be put together in the Star Wars room and when the day comes for me to move, it'll be able to be taken apart and put back together at the new location.

You've already seen pictures of the door and the back with mirrors so I did not duplicate those. Here are the remaining pieces--

The bottom molding:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-2776-1337603027112.jpg

This will be screwed into the bottom when assembled

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-7275-1337603156057.jpg

The top:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-1640-1337603180590.jpg

The electronics inside the top (lights and cooling fan):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-4828-1337603209438.jpg

The bottom that will support Jabba (top piece is sanded plywood that fits into a recess that was routed out of the frame):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-4925-1337603246319.jpg

Top rail with joining mechanism (thing is uber strong!):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-6672-1337603286691.jpg

There are one on each side of the top rail and the bottom rail joining each to the sides in this fashion:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-6714-1337603327236.jpg

Side:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-930-1337603349711.jpg

Bottom rail:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-2778-1337603426203.jpg

All that's left now is to finish the sanding, do the staining and sealing and then installation!

So, we put the second coat of stain on today and I'm liking it! Still have to polyurethane before putting it together.

Meanwhile, project #2 began! So without further ado, here's the beginnings of the display for Yoda's Hut Environment!

So naturally there's the planning and drawing the highly technical blueprints:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-27969-1339980025546.jpg

After that, it was time to transfer the blueprints to the material (particle board for this one):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-2744-1339980097321.jpg

Part of the display is going to be a motorized lazy susan so we took a plain lazy susan and cut the groove for the drive belt:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/djohnson11/photobucket-4528-1339980128539.jpg

And here's the lazy susan in action!: (Click and turn head sideways--sorry)

And finally the footboards for the base were cut:

Going to be a while on the curio. Unfortunately, temperatures in the southern US aren't very conducive to poly sealing so we have to wait for it to cool down.

In the meantime, I'm still hashing out the bodysuits, researching the instruments to make sure I get those right, will work on the Yoda's Hut display and my latest project, working on my horror movie script.

Unfortunately, the only time we can do it is during the day. Pretty sure you meant 85 not 35...lol but just to give you an example, it won't get below 85 until about 9pm tonight and at 10 am it'll already be very close to 85. Summers are rough in Georgia, especially when you add in humidity of 70% plus once it actually cools off some.

Yeah, we have the farenheit deal going on. With the humidity, etc. it' really needs to be about 29 C or lower for it to have the right conditions for drying time here. At 35 C, the humidity is so thick here that it wouldn't ever dry.
