I remember biting the bullet and complaining when I bought anh vader exclusive unopened for $120. I had never paid that much for any figure. Hearing that he sells for $300 is overwhelming!

My predictions for most valuable/increased figures are vader ex, stormtrooper ex, aayla secura, Luke Jedi exclusive, lando ex, and old Ben ex. In that order. I think yoda is a fad and will fizzle down. Sorry.

FlyAndFight
03-11-2011, 06:39 PM
Ah get him already. He's worth it and its Yoda. You can get a regular for a bit less but thats about your only option other than waiting a while for ebay.

I know, I know... It's just that I've recently picked up quite a bit of other figures and the 1/6th funds are at their lowest. If Yoda can stick around for another month or so, I'll try to pick him up then.

"Judge me by my size, do you? Hmmmm? Hmm?"

:rotfl

Anyone who's on the fence should grab one now IMO. My buddy ordered a dozen for his LCS. They arrived end of last week and are almost gone. He stocks almost every SW 1/6 and that never happens. He's trying to get more from his SS rep but she couldn't guarantee anything.
You never know what will happen on the after market but I would play it safe on this one. I think a lot of people hibernate through the Clones and then turn up for the tried and true favorites.
Sideshow says Backordered, BBTS is pre-Sold Out. I don't think he'll go for Vader money but in a couple of months $80 shipped might look like a deal.

You make a good point. Yoda is definitely a major character and those collectors passing on the 2nd and 3rd tier figs will most probably snag the little green guy up.

Don't forget that you aren't just getting Yoda but also the log. That's a 12" scale environment pretty much thrown in for free. Yoda comes with everything included to make a nice little display.

Viking Playground has Yoda for about $73 shipped. I ordered it Friday night, and it arrived Monday morning. Quite frankly, that was amazing as I live on the other side of the country.

Here's my contribution to the pics. I tried to get the green as accurate as I could, and I think it's pretty darn close. It's probably a little bit richer of a color, as you can really tell by the brown robe, that it's a bit washed out.

http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/9826/closepo.jpg

Here's my slightly wonky eye. Really it's not noticeable considering how small Yoda is.

His color is better in hand, the pictures tend to look more saturated. SS also dirted him up a bit which is nice. That said though, he is still too dark to be honest.

Nice pic, King and great idea for that base.

Question to all: is there a trick to tying the belt back on?

Parts of the string seem to be hardened with paint and won't allow me to tie a knot.

I also have 'cracks' in the pleather at the line where the pouches are glued, cracks that show white when parted. Anyone else have this issue? I may have to check with SS for a replacement belt.

The hands and feet come off nice and easy and I'm pleased with everything else so far but this belt is really driving me crazy right now.

Are people really using the "log" to justify the price? :lol

I think the figure looks fine but I certainly don't think it's worth $80 bucks.

It's like a Hasbro 3 & 3/4 inch figure in size and articulation, with a swatch of fabrics. We should at the very least had gotten a second headsculpt, perhaps with eyes closed, as when he's concentrating on lifting the X-Wing from the swamp. I would have loved to have him displayed in that pose, one arm raised. Iconic for me.

Did it at least include a base? I guess the "log" fills in that function...

Will do. Actually, it's drying and waiting for finishing touches.. I snapped a few pictures.

This is going to be the base of it
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o176/d_jedi1/Yoda/P1110008.jpg
I cut two pieces of plexiglass 9.5" X 12", sanded and glued them together.
I decided how I wanted to place the "log" and marked it on the plexi. I painted the areas that will be water green.
After that, I cut some moss mat to fit and glued it down.
I used the glue liberally mixed with sand along the edges and leading out into the area for "water" and after that had set up a bit, I painted it dark brown.
This is essentially how it will look (I need to add my "water" to it)
Rear

Front
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o176/d_jedi1/Yoda/P1110018.jpg
The "log" is not yet permanently fastened as I'm waiting for everything currently in use to dry first as well as adding the "water".
I apologise for the lack of Yoda.. he's shipping from UrbanSamurai and hasn't arrived just yet.
At least he has a Slimy Mudhole to call home once he arrives. :wink1:

I used two of those injector looking tubes of two-part epoxy, the five minute kind. I poured a little brown paint into it and mixed it all up.
I poured and spread it quickly onto the base (which I had masking tape all around as a wall). Once that set up, I added accents with a couple of brown paints and coated the whole thing with "future" floor polish.

Just keep telling yourself that as you continue to live life with only a stinky brown and white snake :lol :1-1:

Although in reality I do agree that its not super amazing, but the nature of Sideshow exclusives are to be an item that is fun or cool for collectors, but not having it doesn't diminish the regular release in a significant way.

An orange snake is a great example in that it clearly is a nod to the more common snake found with the Kenner Yoda. So for some (like me) that is a very cool and desirable item, but for others they might not care either way.

Please dont get me wrong. There's nothing wrong with a "nod" to the past. Overall, This is a great marketing concept that works well with lesser known characters like bib fortuna/Kenner staff exclusive and hammerhead/Kenner blaster. (even though it was not exclusive)

However, this late in the game with the overall line, and the anticipation for such an iconic character like yoda, the orange snake is almost insulting. In addition, somewhat uncreative and on the cheap side. Only serious collectors even appreciate or are aware of the orange/brown snake variation of the original Kenner figure. Ok so that's why we have exclusives! If I dont like, it don't buy it! Gotcha. All 750 of you exclusive owners can sit back knowing that you have the leg up on the rest of us, can sell it for 3 times the amount any day...whatever.

:exactly::exactly: I think it's one of the best and creative exclusives SS has done with a SW 12" figure. It's not something that is a make-or-break item for the figure, but instead it's a small gift to those of us who had the Kenner Yoda growing up.

http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6016

Here is one of my posts from this five-year-old thread:

That is why I think the average consumer could be informed through proper advertising. The product description could highlight all the extra detail and workmanship that had to go into the figure. Statements that emphasize the design of a new articulated body and other innovative features could relate to the price increase. This product description could be listed where ever the figure is sold.

I would have NO problem buying Yoda with another figure. But what makes me concerned about "2-packs" is that I don't know if there will have to be compromises made to either figure because of a 2-pack price threshold. I'm not sure if a $100 2-pack is reasonable. If Anakin costs $55 because of additional accessories, I'm sure Yoda with a new articulated body would cost quite a bit more. And I don't want Dagobah Luke being sacrificed in quality. I hope to see him with a proper outfit (tank top included) and high quality facial sculpt that resembles Mark Hamill during those scenes. So he would cost $50 minimum.

OK, here's an idea for an appealing Yoda sold by himself:

How about multiple facial sculpts? Even as a puppet, Yoda was a VERY expressive character! If they released a Dagobah ESB Yoda, how about three or four different heads?

1) One neutral head with his classic look in ESB while sitting on a log.

2) One head with a concentrated expression, with eyes closed, while he lifts the X-Wing out of the water.

3) One where he has those 'evil' looking eyes and says "You will be, you will be..." in a deep menacing voice?

4) One with a surprised look (along with bugged eyes), like when he gets zapped by R2! Remember that?? Man, the ESB Yoda puppet's personality and realistic body language is heads and tails above any CGI character they made in the prequels. :Sigh: Aw, the memories...:angelsmil

No, it doesn't boil down to that. :lol Stop making up strawman arguments.

Yoda's body is basically no different than the Toy Biz Gollum body from 10 years ago that sold for like $10.

I think most people realize that things cost money, the difference is that reasonable people think $50 is "something" and not "nothing".

It pretty apparent however that many collectors are not reasonable consumers. Rather, people willing to splurge on these no matter what else in the world is going on.

Well, I don't know. I'm not going to complain about the cost in and of itself, but maybe the log could have been substituted for one or two alternate face sculpts?

I mean, it's a cool little mini-environment and the figure does look good with it - but in all fairness, any of us could have gotten a piece of driftwood or something if we really felt the need to have him sit on a log.

Meh, not really important I suppose. Maybe I can get a recast or repainted head down the road or something, with the eyes closed.

Oh, and it looks like I've got an ORANGE SNAKE coming! Elite status maintained! :)

I would still like to get a box, at some point, but I can wait. Maybe someone who is running out of room and is just going to throw it out anyway will just give it to me - hey, it happened with my Old Ben! (My first Sideshow figure, btw.)

I splruge. However, does anyone feel a little ripped off by the markup of this figure? Honestly, I appreciate higher end collectables hence I'm here. In all fairness, "Sideshows high end collectable yoda figure is not the best example of value and collector quality in this instance. I agree that the body is somewhat similar to a toy biz gollum. Ok,....but twisty ties and tape? one tray? lackluster repeated photo on the back of the box, wonky eye paint, dollar store plastic snake...production wise this figure is LAZY.

Stand corrected, We are not cheap, nor do we want something for nothing. It's the point. We are loyal and longtime collectors. We want value, and moreso, we want quality and consistency in the line. If you jack the prices up, please back it up with a little more care in quality.

I'm going to lay this off on gasoline prices so I dont get flamed in this forum. Wheeew! Everything is so expensive now! :)

I have to agree... the "mass market" company can sell figures for less money doesn't really work in that the units produced is far more than a total of 5,750. Also, I'm willing to bet that Toybiz or even larger companies like Hasbro have much more influence over the cost they pay for raw materials, labor, etc. Sideshow is small potatoes by comparison.

And of course, now that same Gollum would now cost more like $15-$17, is smaller, has less paint work; less accessories and no cloth outfit.

We got a $75 figure. :dunno

Yep, compared to what other 1/6 figures are going for Yoda is a solid value. I would agree that all figures MSRPs are more than they should be, but they do continue to sell despite the down economy :huh

I would say that Yoda for $75 feels better than the BL in casual wear (who shares a head sculpt with the suit version) for $155.

No ____! These cost money? Who knew? Point still stands when it comes to things we buy especially people want something for nothing.

Is $50 "something" or "nothing"? Thats the question. IMO $50 is still something and I would wager that if SSC still wanted to work hard enough to sell 5000 units of something that all those U.S. Grants would amount to "something" for their bottom line too.

Instead, they don't want to bother with the marketing aspect and instead would rather count on 1000 addicts to pay $75-$135 for something that would be $50-$80 if they made 5000 of them.

This is all a retreaded argument, and we probably don't need to do it again, just personally, I don't feel all those times that I gave SSC my hard earned $50 that I was somehow taking advantage of them. Thats BS.

Also, regarding Yoda, I mention Gollum because I think people give SSC way too much credit for "developing" a new body for Yoda, when if you look back at Justinluck's thread, I'm willing to bet you'll see a post from me that mentions the Gollum body and how they should just rip it off. Well, they took my advice so great, but lets not give them kudos and use it as a justification for price increase.

Of course $50 is something thats not my point. :slap I'm speaking to the fact people want say a Yoda or $50 everything he comes with and more for that price.

Higher ES just don't work anymore. Things just don't sell well enough to justify products have a 5k ES. So ES have to be smaller and we pay more. Thats the deal.

They did not take the gollum body and just rip it off. The Yoda body has more articulation than that. So they get praise for making a well made body for this character.

Almost 6,000 total Yodas...

I think they'll still sell out within the next 6 months like Vader.

I mean, after Vader, Yoda would seem to be the most popular little figure to get if you figure all those non-collectors who just want one little guy for their desk at work, etc.

or the manufacturing costs in yoda were so low that SSC doesn't mind carrying a 1000 or so until they sell (or dumping them to gohastings, etc).

I think the clothing costs are the most expensive thing for SSC to make, and Yoda is pretty simple and sparse.

galactiboy

Well the regular is already on backorder... so I'd guess it will sell out sooner than later.

Part of my savings is because I'm in CA and get hit with taxes to boot. So if Yoda is $85 + 8 tax + 10 ship = 103... I got mine on sale for 60 so that's $43 saved. BUT I also got a few other things so the shipping got amortized.

Ah, that makes perfect sense.

And Yoda trumps the Emperor as far as "must haves" go. Glad to see the little guy getting his due.

Ironically enough, while I easily passed on Yoda, I didn't want to miss out on the exclusive Emperor. :dunno

3-4 days. Then this yesterday:

Thank you very much for your patience. We just wanted to follow up and let you know that we are still working on your exchange for the damaged piece of your Yoda 1/6 Scale Figure. We apologize for this delay. Once we have received confirmation of when your replacement part will be available, we will contact you regarding the details of this exchange.

A full refund would be palatable if I got to keep the figure. I'd take a gift card too. A big one.

I think the clothing costs are the most expensive thing for SSC to make, and Yoda is pretty simple and sparse.

Hands down the most expensive part of Yoda was the body. Even, if they had straight up re-molded Gollum's body and used that, it STILL would've been the most expensive. They still would've had to make molds of Gollum's body, and that's a lot of steel molds for all those pieces.

The steel molds to make a figure are still the most expensive part of the production process. The reason Hot Toys figures are so expensive, and the reason why they always have such crisp paint apps is that they use steel molds to paint the heads. It's always accurate and always precise.

The plastic molded pieces are the most expensive part of any figure.

Ironically enough, while I easily passed on Yoda, I didn't want to miss out on the exclusive Emperor. :dunno

Had the exclusive Yoda been the "Force" face, there would be a lot more people belly-aching about missing out on the Ex.

Ex Head > anything.

On the left is a Doctor Who Cyberman made by Dapol in the late 80's. Not sure what that is on the other side though.

Fantastic little figure. Sideshow really does know how to make SW aliens. And the green color is perfectly fine.

Yep, that's exactly what I mentioned earlier in this thread. But I think that they could have kept the snake as the exclusive and simply have added the Force face to all releases and it would have probably made the cost more palatable to many.

I hate to say it, but the Bespin Luke looks pretty, well, toy-like compared to Yoda. Kind of lessens the impact. Sideshow has come a long way in the last couple years - some of their older figures don't hold up I guess.

That should make us all feel better about rising prices, at least.

Check Target (if you have one close to you) in the educational toy section they have bin displays of little plastic animals. Some of them are 1/6 scale and I imagine you could find a few reptiles to add to the diorama.

I can't recall the brand name off the top of my head, but they have good paint work and fit in with other 1/6 figures... I used one of the cats for my HT Hellboy figure:
