View Full Version : putting 2 Detolfs together - anyone try it?

I was thinking that if you leave one glass wall off of a Detolf and put 2 together you can put PFs together such as Vader and Obi-wan. Anyone try it?

Also I'm looking for making the shelves in a Detolf adjustable. They could fit 3 PFs if you could just move the shelves.

Anyone do either of those? Does it work?

Dave - the way the wood base and top work on the Detolf (sticking out about 3/4 of an inch), there would be a gap between the glass sides. The Detolf may also be somewhat destabilized with only two glass panels supporting the whole thing (the door panel provides no real support). But don't know if others have experimented with this.

I know there's a tutorial somewhere out there on how to adjust detolf shelves. It involves removing/modding the side support bars and using zipties to secure them. Found it http://sideshowcollectors.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60352&highlight=adjustable+detolf

That mod thread is exactly the type of thing for this subforum. Some great ideas in there.

I've considered remaking the top & bottom of a Detolf as though it was almost three wide, so that 2 detolfs could make one 3 wide version, the 2 inner side panels would be turned 90o to create a new centre & back panel, This would just require new shelves making to go across the new width. I was going to make two of the "Super Detolfs" but the idea was killed as where I was going to put them was to short by 100mm. I have the drawing on my other PC will post. As far as changing shelf height I had this done for my 1:1 Endoskull to fit in a detolf we had to cut the old bars off and weld a new crossbar on for supporting the weight
http://sideshowcollectors.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21909&d=1263278376

The new shelves are aprox 20mm lower

not a great image but you should get the idea

if you've got a table saw, you can run the blade along a longer piece of wood that the glass walls would slide into.
so essentially you'd have a solid one piece of wood along the top and bottom of the display unit.

Another thought I had was to just get the wire frame remade with the shelves at different heights, as currently I have my 1:1 SW helmets in my detolfs they take 2 shelf spaces each waisting space,
the basic frame are only 6mm wire which is cheap enough, I just need someone to cut, weld the shelves & tap the ends. If I had the top shelf made to 20inch that would allow most SW helmets as Vader is 19" and allow me 3 shelves under, it's just a question do you make the shelves under even or make the bottom shelf lower?

I honestly think modding the Detolf in that way will seriously (like stated above) make the whole thing unstable . The top and bottom pieces of wood are notched so the glass panels fit inside and then secured at both end with the allen screws , making it "one solid piece" . The Detolfs are only $59.99 , cheap enough to experiment with . Dave you would be a brave man to try and mod it and i would love to see it done . I hope you achieve what you wanna do .

What i would do is try and shop for a bigger display case , you are gunna pay more $$$ though :hi5: GOOD LUCK MY FRIEND

there is a company called jysk that sells a "double detolf" style case. They are a chain and available in Canada and Europe. Not so sure about the US.

Here are older pics of mine:

so wanted to expand on space and reuse glass from the detolfs......so getting there slowly today -

Before -

After -

http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq215/tigerfeet101/DSC_0089.jpg

I knew it was going to be tight as when I measured it the height from floor to the wall shelf differed by a couple of CM's at each end but it just fits in..........

now to think where to put the stuff back.

oh and the bottom shelf all round is high enough to take the MK3 Bertie.....planning for ya..... :hi5:

the lighting was used on my hot toys but I never used it so this way they will be more useful now. _:yess:

Looks a lot better! Did you come up with this design, or is it some kind of kit? Doesn't look much like detolf anymore to me. Awesome!

Geil
02-26-2011, 02:32 PM
looks like repurpose of all the glass panels he already. I have seen these joints before and its a good idea but the long panels are already bending without anything on it I would really look into adding support oh and now you have no doors at all so dust bunnies are going to have full access :P

tigerfeet
02-26-2011, 04:23 PM
bring on the dust bunnies, means I get to take the stuff off to dust and play with them more ...

the shelfs are now loaded and haven't changed at all so alll good....I did do some calcs beforehand and worked out fine but yeah alot of glass. :panic:

oh and its my own design given the space limitations I had.....needed more space with the materials I had at hand and this kinda worked.

Geil
02-26-2011, 04:39 PM
Glass is not very flexible so it may not sag much more but will just break without much warning if stressed enough. Considering you having more space now I am sure you will get a lot more now ;)

darkagent
02-26-2011, 11:29 PM
Looks like the top piece of glass is already sagging.

tigerfeet
02-27-2011, 04:09 AM
it looks like that due to the shelf above of the floor not being even.....the top left corner of the unit only just fits under the shelf with no space where as the top right corner has prob an inch so it gives the impression that the shelf is dipping

That is perfect and not the hard to do. Will definitly reconsider this option for my new collection room. I especially like that ther is a shelve under the doubled Detolf. Maybe add a small double box at the top to install some lights and hide the electricity, but otherwise exactly what I was looking for. thanks for posting!:clap

Maglor suggested for me to post this here. A friend of mine in another forum named KiriK created this so he takes full credit.

This is his step by step tutorial:

Here's pictures of how he put it together

"I sawed off the edge of the detolf boards before putting them together":
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/kiririth/Room%20pics/2009-7-5011.jpg

"I drilled holes and used mending plates, bolts, nuts, and washers to hold the two pieces"
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/kiririth/Room%20pics/2009-7-5012.jpg

"Here's what the bottom side looks like"
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/kiririth/Room%20pics/2009-7-5020.jpg

And now putting in the frame for the Detolf
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/kiririth/Room%20pics/2009-7-5021.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/kiririth/Room%20pics/2009-7-5022.jpg

Add the glass sides, doors, and top pieces!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/kiririth/Room%20pics/2009-7-5023.jpg

Top bolted together just like the bottom pieces
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/kiririth/Room%20pics/2009-7-5025.jpg

See how small the gap is now between the doors in the front. I can barely stick my finger through whereas i could fit my whole hand into the original frame
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/kiririth/Room%20pics/2009-7-5027.jpg

Thanks to him I was able to pull mine off =) Enjoy
