Right I have thought long about this and decided well what the chuffin eck I will do it.

I find that I do little bits and pieces and have no idea where to put them.
I don't want to start a new thread for just a couple of shots or a random question, so I thought I would stick all my randomness and oddness in one rambling chaotic constantly derailing thread.....


So to kick it all off....

Casting and painting.....

I have been getting in to casting and mould making in a big way. Loads of folks have given me advice and helped me out and I am so grateful.

I first started with a mould making two part drop of tackle called Siligum, fanchuffintastic stuff, but but more expensive than a trip out clothes shopping with the Mrs!

I was using resin plaster and doing a two part process. Resin plaster is amazing. its cheap and you can work into it really easily when you have just demoulded it.

But it is heavy and is rock hard when it totally dries and can be brittle if you are a heavy handed Goth from the west country.

so then I moved to resin.... what a chuffin mess, and silicon moulds.... totally disaster...

But after about 3 months wages, four pairs of ruined slacks and a couple of lost days due to toxic fume inhalation I made it through the other side...


Here are some of the products.

First up is the Hans Solo parade.
I love the Smuggler SS Sculpt, but the neck makes posing a bit wooden... so oft with his head.
next was painting... my word that is as tough as a weasel, but I will not give up.

I have been doing lots of experimenting with painting, washes undercoats, overcoats, trench coats and whileecioates, just trying to find what works best for me.

EDIT: So are those gloves just resin? Are they flexible at all, or will they not bend whatsoever?

They are resin. Now the draw back DUDE is as you say... they are ridged.
BUt I am waiting until I can get some more cash and then experiment and research into rubber ow er mrs!!

As for piloting the falcon... there can be only one... ANH all the way.

Well Dorgs, I have been thinking of how to reproduce the qualities of good 1/6 hands (just flexible enough to let an object into its grasp, but firm enough to keep it there until you remove it)...


I assume you are familiar with Sculpey brand clay? Well, apparently there is a flexible version that is somewhat rubbery, and can be mixed with regular Sculpey to produce varying hardnesses between entirely rigid normal Sculpey and very floppy flexible Sculpey.

If a mixture of the 2 Sculpey clays could be somehow pressed into a mold with great enough pressure, it is possible that the clay would pick up every detail of the mold, and, when baked, turn into a solid, semi-flexible hand...

I have yet to try this, as I have not seen flexible Sculpey in local stores and don't want to go through the hassle of ordering any. And of course I don't use Sculpey in general due to it's tendency to release carcinogenic gases when heated too much... but if I got some sort of outdoor oven rigged up, that would be safer...

Oh Dorgs, since I am indeed very much addicted to clones, and always looking to expand my army, do you think you would be willing to trade some cast chest armor and feet (and possibly some other clone parts if you've made any) for... say, a recast of a SS EpII helmet or two? I'd be willing to paint them! :D

PS if we traded these items, I would include the clone helmet(s) with the other item when I sent it, because I would be molding/casting both at the same time... and I know 2 helmets might not have the same value as all the chest/feet/other pieces, so I may be willing to send three! :lol

oh yeah, and the other item would remain a gift, as in it would be exempt from the trade, if such a transaction were ever to be executed between us...

Hey Dude! It took me the longest time to find the flexible Sculpey, but I actually found it in a hobby store that carried RPG stuff. It was actually by all the Citadel paints or whatever they paint those little guys with? I have not been able to find it anywhere else. :confused:

Is it possible to do a full mold then cut it in half and cast them then clean em up n stick em together with glue? if that makes sense.

If that doesn’t work for you here is what I did. I casted one holster at a time, and then once I poured the resin and it cured I pushed the cast out from the bottom. However I used a soft mold made by smooth-on. But if you still cast one at a time you could cut the mold on the back side of the holster and it should slide right out. I gave you and example with the gun. I used the one mold method for the gun and it worked. The reason there are two pour holes is, one is for an air vent so air isn’t trapped in the mold. well the cast is out on the visor.. turned out ok.. but as the statues are 1/7th the visor is a bit on the short arm side of not quite long enough.. i am sure I could get around it some how but I am just gonna live with it...well for a bit any way.

Lopie how do you get your smooth on casts so clean...when I cast I always get imperfect copies that have tiny little bumps and stuff

Witekite, Lopie uses a pressure pot for his resin I think. It stops you getting bubbles in the casts.

I am sorry I did not get back to u about what resin I use. I will post a pic in a mo!

I rigged a pressure pot that goes to 40 psi.

Hey Dorgs someone told me once to get less bubbles slowly pour it as a continous stream. Then tap the cast gently afterwards to let any bubbles rise to the top.

Nope that is a SS cast. Think I may do a mould of the Koto one. But when moulding and casting there is a shrinkage... so it would be smaller.

It looks pretty good on the SS 1 as is.

I used a koto head for my commander bacara cos it needed alot of building up on. Other than that i cant see where you'd use 1 m8. It would be easier to just cut the middle or the sides off a visor and extend another 1, then cast that maybe.

Your a genius anyway and im sure you'll make something your happy with :D

He's coming up on 84 next month and going strong! (I'm 39) The old dog!!!

Very proud of the old Hero, he was one of the few to survive the drop at Arnham, (Bridge too far) Spent time as a POW and then escaped. Walked for days towards the sound of battle assuming we were winning so that was were he aught to go, LOL daft bugger, I'd have hidden in a ditch and waited for it all to blow over!

Cheers guys. I would have finished the moulds today if I had not cooked the top shoulder pads... can not believe I ruined em! Ow well out with the plasticard.

I am attempting to mould the tiny straps that go from the belt to the holsters!! No chuffin idea if its gonna work.

We will know tomorrow evening I hope.

I will take a shot of everything that I have cast up so far later.

Next up once I have made the paladron thing is something much bigger!! LOL

Well this is what we have so far.

I have not had time to clean up the casts yet and there some fails but hey I don't want it all easy now!!

So the hands and guns seem to be ok. the pauldron is a pain bit ok, the holster are tricky but I dont need many.

I have also cast some imperial belt buckles and the rank markings to replace my hasbro ones.

If the mould go well today everything will be down to the last two piece of pauldron to make.

I have slapped some paint on to show up the detail, but everything will be repainted.

Looking good Dorgs, but I think you should cut the top parts of the pistols off and attatch them to some other pistol's grip... that way you can make only the gun (and not the hands, seems like it'd take less materials) and the SS hands can hold them...

tonights efforts. Tanks to chakaman I was abl to get the sizes for the bits that I cooked.

I have drawn one up and scaled it up 5% and 10% as the koto is 1/7th scale. But they look too big so I think I will try the same size at mo.

I have also cast the straps and buckle for the holsters but I have not hat time to clean it up much.

I got this 1/6 premade DID Metal and plastic Kettenkrad (mines got black seats) today from modellers loft and damm does he post stuff quick. Btw he's moving shop to Dorset or something so he's not posting anything from the 21st until the 29th of this month.

Im gonna dirty it up a bit, make a dio sometime and add a few soldier story guys to it. I love this thing the steering works and the tracks go up and down as well as round, and the detail on the engine etc under the flaps is awesome. Alot of peeps convert these for remote control use as its built for that in mind.

LOL it may all go really bad so I will post pics soon. Its a figure which has been done before... but not by me LOL. at the moment the mould is leak silicon all over the show and so I think I am gonna go to bed LOL.face the empty moulds and a loft of wasted expensive goo in the morning :(

Oh Dorgs, the silicone is not wasted. Trust me.

It is now simply filler for your next molds! The nice thing about silicone is that it sticks to and bonds with only itself, so if you mix up some silicone and pour it over something, but it doesn't quite make it over the top of the object, you can cut up failed molds and stick pieces of 'em in the outer edges of your new mold before it starts to set up, displacing it enough so that it rises a bit more. Add enough chunks, and, voila! The new mold now completely covers your object.

The chopped up chunks will meld seamlessly with the rest of the mold once it cures, as it will all be the same material (as long as you're using the same kind of silicone for the failed and new molds, but even if you didn't, it'll still work as pretty good filler), and as long as the failed mold chunks aren't too old, should hold up just the same as the rest of the mold. Only thing you have to watch out for are if the chunks are actually touching your object when you poke 'em in.

You can probably end up making a new mold with around 10% recycled silicone! On my most recent mold (which of course, was for the alien head I'm still too lazy to take pics of), I ran out of chunks and resorted to sticking in plastic knives from Wendy's and McDonald's over the years that I use to stir up silicone/resin (it took about 3, but along with the recycled chunks it displaced the mold just enough to cover the top of the head. Luckily, I accidentally bought Alumilite High Strength, which is so stretchy I could not cut it open with scissors, or even knives from my sculpting kit, and I had to saw into it for about 2 minutes with one of the sharpest steak knives I own... I swear, enough of that stuff could stop a bullet!)

Cbob lent me some bits odd his GG Bly and I got stuck in!.

With him ready for painting I then moved on the Commander Cody, with the help of Ryan and Hurricane. Hurricane is sending me the final bits I need and he will be up for painting and weathering.

Then EP3 buckets for all my troopers as I like many others bought clonobis of studiosunny.
(incidently I had massive problems with this ebay seller but the cheap clones make it worth while.)

Next up is EP2 buckets for the troopers (thanks to San) and I have to have a go at Captain Rex.

I also wanted to see if I could shrink jedi Luke head by multiple casting, but I can not see any difference yet. Also doing the same with Leia.

Also San sent me a hasbro jango head.

Now the idea with this is to create lots of variations on jango heads, bald, crew cut, mohawk but that will be an ongoing idea.

as far as the shrinking of the heads goes. have you tried the soaking them in acetone method, where they swell up and then contract smaller than the original. not sure of the exact details of doing this but i've read where it does work.

Wow... that's cheap!

I've saved about $75 getting my Medi commander for cheap ($70), my clonobi (new in box) I got for $60 shipped (saving about $30)... so I've saved about $105 on clones, but I paid the full price for my SS Ep II... so I guess if I had paid full price for the other 2, I basically got the SS EpII free!

Sometimes I think all the clonobis in the world will be gone soon, with everyone buying em up all the time... :dunno

I'll have to send you a package just so you can get sick Dorgs, then when you die your family will have to sell off your stuff, and I'll finally get my hands on your clone army! :mwaha

It depends on the head, and it only works on the soft rubbery head or they just crack and don't shrink at all. I have gotten it to work quite well on Hasbro Stormtrooper boots quite well though, it shrank and stiffened them up a lot.

If I do end up getting one I'm more then likely selling/trading off the head and sabers. That version reminds me too much of him with a mullet and I never really liked that hilt design. Plus I have two recast Jango heads someone sent me long ago, they are chuck full of cast holes though. I don't know weather to fill them or leave them as battle damage.

I still kick myself for never jumping on the Hastings deal, it was one of those getting paid the next day and then they were all sold. Oh well.

:lol jk, you're a good chap... I'm just jealous you ended up with a Commando bust, and you are so successful in everything... I mean, you can cast things with no discernable bubbles all the time, you can paint heads well too... (not to mention you built the freaking Milennium Falcon!)

Next up are the shoulder pads.

I have made rough moulds from the bust then cast then in resin plaster.

Then I am cutting into them and cleaning them up to make a second mould.

I tried my hand at head-painting, I'm pretty terrible at it... can't get my colors to blend, lots of paint slop, and it always gets too textured to look good... Use alot less water, it should be thinner but not runny. Try using a big brush and drop a few bits of that in a pot then add the same amount in paint, if you want it thinner use a bit more water, or thicker a bit more paint. The only time i ever use runny paint is for darkening something slightly whilst retaining the original colour underbeath.

Both the cast hands are great and the gun 1 is awesome dorgs, i really like those :D they'd do me m8 no need to make loose guns etc, of thats ok.

I should be miffed as im loosing 1 of my jobs in a few months but im trying to secure the new contract outside of the company when they build their new medical centre though. So im gonna have to tighten my belt a bit as well.

you can see it's a little too long when compared with the hands... if you look carefully you'll see that in the first pic (a pic of the actual model used in-game), the pistol is about exactly as long as the fore-arm plate... in the GG bust, the pistol seems to be as long as the forearm plate plus the actual hand... Here I've demonstrated by copying the pistol in each picture, then re-positioning it under the arm and drawing red lines to show how long it is in comparison...

Oh well i could make and sell figs i suppose, i have thought about selling some 1/6 guyver and judge dredd figures. I'll have to see how it goes work wise and if i get desperate. If i get real desperate i have a fair few figurs i can let go that i can live without until i find another job. I still have 1 more secure job but that only brings in a few hundred per month, that will cover my basics.

they are still really rough Kimo, but I am using quick setting resin and rotating the mould. they drilling ad dremeling, I am sure there is an easy way but I am still learning.

Mike is doing Sev as well and maybe all the different commando's. I think he must have cut his boss up cos i think ive seen him reselling it repainted on ebay.
