View Full Version : No new WWI figures.....?

Got to say these new Toy Fair announcements are pretty disappointing..
No new Bayonets & Barbed Wire figures any kind...?
If a re-done Red Baron with minor changes is the best they can come up with - then it feels like the Military lines are at end. Sorry but movie military like John Wayne doesn't cut it for me and neither does more Ermey figures.
Same can be said for their Universal Monsters line - no new announcements beyond Silver Screen editions of currently availiable 1/4 figures..
Seems Sideshow is moving more and more towards mainstream and Hollywood pop culture products and trends (c'mon - Chucky?! - again!) and leaves behind what truly made them make their mark as an innovative toy company in the first place in trying new lines and subject matter. I can respect business practice and momentum like the next person - but I've truly lost interest in them as a company at this point as far as personal tastes go.
WWI enthusiasts have very little options as far as 12" collecting - and now it seems even less.

I don't think we should give up hope on WW1 figures. Emrey may be the best selling figure but ALL of the pre 2005 'rank and file' troops have sold out. The FFL won't be around for much longer, I'm sure.
SST have said that the lines never close but 'rest a spell'. Hopefully, if we keep lobbying they will realise that there is a market for WW1 figures, which needs satisfying.
There are other 1/6 forums around, many members of which are constantly complaining that the leading company, in military 1/6 model circles, only seems to produce WW2 Germans ?.
Keep asking Sideshow when the next Bayonets and Barbed Wire figure is due -they might get the message.

Johnny Turk would be add something to the collection. Come on SST !!

Until Peter Jackson makes a WWI movie that Sideshow can license from, we have a long wait ahead...

I have posted something along these lines on the Peter Jackson web site.
I understand that there are a couple of WW1 war movies being made.
Will try to find more info and dropsubtle hints to SST.
One which I do recall is being directed by Paul Haggis, the 'Due South' Mountie actor.

I agree 100% with dopeybenny, I hope this is just a "rest" for a short time.

Tom said in chat that the military lines are "on hiatus". Unfortunately they just don't sell well it seems. They are a labor of love for the SSC guys, but it's difficult to justify the R&D expenses I guess.

Well thanks for sharing your thoughts and glad to know I'm not alone on this.
It's gotten to the point where I consider re-buying certain SST WWI figures and re-bashing them into something new....I've done it once with Wyatt Earp turned into a French Poilu and may consider some more.
While I do buy some WWII figures, with folks like DID raising the bar considerably, the SST Bayonets line still remains my favourite and most cherished, which is why the long wait and hiatus seems harder. It's purely selfish desire but one shared by many I'm sure.

I don't know. It smells like sell out to me.

Wouldn't it be funny if all those Civil War figures started singing "We are the World"?

Nice looking collection,
I've a 'B Sharpshooter', currently disguised as a WW1 French Trench Raider - nice scarf hiding his hair.
They really do look like they are attending a 'Revival of the Boys Bands' convention - 150 years on. Or are they the Village Peoples, long lost rivals !
OOps, my age is showing.

Though I'm a big SW and LOTR fan, SSC's Bayonets & Barbwire series is what first attracted me to the company. It's disappointing (but not disheartening) that no new WWI figs have been announced. It's such a great era with so many sources and possibilities to draw from.
I agree if we keep on harping on SSC, they'll get the message and start working on something.
That and get Peter Jackson to make an epic Great War film as many have already suggested.

It would be nice if we got some of Kubrick's Paths of Glory figs.
Col. Dax, Gen. Broulard, Gen. Mireau would be great but I hear Kubrick never released his film's licenses. Too bad

Hi all:
I haven't had a chance to buy the WW I figures though I'm sure i can find the ones I want. In the meantime, I think there's a growing interest in the period. There was a movie about the Christmas truce of 1914 which would've given us great figures of the early part of the war. This year is the 80th anniversary of Verdun, Tannanburg and the Somme. It would be great if Sideshow could put out some new figures (Pétain) a poilou with the kaki uniform, a WW I Russian or even rerelease the old one like the Stosstroops. Next year is the anniversary of Caparetto so some Italians- line infantry, Arditi, AustroHungarian, the Wuttemburg mountain infantrymen (i.e. Rommel's unit) would be so cool.

I, for one, would still like to see Sideshow do a Kaiser Bill.

The Kaiser? Interesting idea. As for WW1 movies, there is one on the way. It's called 'Flyboys' and deals with the Lafayette Escadrille. As an 'aerophile', I've been casually keeping track of it, mostly for the aircraft(several Nieuports, a Sopwith strutter and a pair of Dr.1's). From what I've seen, it should be interesting. I've also heard that there's a German film about Richthofen in the works, but details are lacking...PS
