INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, HURT LOCKER, UP, and DISTRICT 9 nominated for Best Picture = Awesome. Sam Rockwell snubbed Best Actor nomination = Travesty. There was no better single lead performance last year. Clooney or Freeman could have been left out instead. Oh well. There's always at least one huge "WTF?", I guess. I'll be pulling for Renner there all the way now.

HURT LOCKER & AVATAR both tied for most total noms at 9 each. Looks like HURT LOCKER has the momentum now.

I also think it's AWESOME that UP and District 9 are nominated for Best Picture. An animated film and a sci-fi film up for that award, who would have thought!? :rock

And although I don't think he'll win, very happy to see Renner nominated for best actor with the big guns!! :rock

WOW!! This is a though year for predictions!

I'm glad that IB, District 9 and Hurt locker got in...even tho...i don't care much for IB....it's still cool to see that the Academy think's it worthy of an Oscar.....

And I'm super glad that Jeremy Renner and Woody Harrilson, got a nom!!!

My vote goes to Christoph Waltz for sure!!! :rock

And it's really awkward to see that the girl from Twilight got a nomination too!

This year is gonna be fun!! I'm so glad there's not a lot of silly indie film that got nominated...like Slumdog.

There's a lot on this list I haven't seen -- though The Hurt Locker, Inglorious and District 9 are on my list for the near future.

The fact that Avatar was nominated for anything aside from technical and effects awards is a joke. Simplistic retread stories do not deserve Academy nominations.

As much as I love Rockwell's performance in Moon (and it's definitely a crime he's not nominated). Bridges was better and is a lock to win for his performance.

I love that Up is nominated for picture and animated. If I'm not mistaken that's a first since Beauty and the Beast no?

My picks in red. This really does seem to be the easiest Oscar predictions in recent memory. The only acting nod that's not a lock is between Streep and Bullock, but I think Bullock will get it for her comeback year. Other than that there is a very clear frontrunner in ever major category.

Hurt Locker while enjoyable is a simplistic story with average acting and probably the most over rated movie in years. I must have been watching a different movie.

Compare this to Mesrine and the powerhouse performance of Vincent Cassel. There is simply no comparision. This has been a poor year for movies IMO.

Average also. Its been a poor year overall for good movies. None of these should be mentioned in the same breath as The Godfather, Shawshank Redemtion, Saving Private Ryan, Schindlers List etc etc.

The writers strike has really hurt 2009. Hopefully 2010 will be better. In saying that I have lost all faith in the Oscars. How Daniel Day Lewis did not win for his portrayel of Bill the Butcher is mindblowing.

Christoph Waltz's opening scene (with his reasonable defense of antisemitism) grabbed me and in some ways the rest of the movie couldn't live up to it. I've seen Nazis portrayed as blindly obedient stooges or mad ranting lunatics, but watching a guy sit down and calmly express racist views that had clearly received some thoughtful consideration was far creepier. I had no idea who this actor was going into the film, but he was mesmerizing and stole the movie away from Brad Pitt. I'd give him an Oscar for that performance.

I also propose a drinking game where everybody takes a shot when someone on the Oscar telecast is forced to recite the full title of "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire."

Chris Waltz' Jew Hunter was both elegant and despicable. I looked forward to his demise minutes after he appeared on screen...until the final scene. The look on his face when he realized what was about to happen actually provoked a tinge of sadness in me. A million times more mercy than he deserved and yet, he pulled me into his head about how wrong it would have been for him.

Any actor who can pull that off with that type of character deserves the highest accolades, IMO.

A Best Picture for Inglorious Basterds would forever prevent it from living in the shadow of Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill. I'd love to see that happen. I think future generations who won't only see IB in the context of PF and KB will appreciate it even more than we do.

We watched the first half of Hurt Locker last night and will finish it tonight. So far I'm not feeling what all the hype was about. Its good, slightly better than Three Kings I'd say, but not Best Picture material. Of course all bets are off until the end. Hopefully it'll pick up but so far it just isn't the pressure cooker I was expecting.

Ponyo should have been nominated over Princess and the Frog but otherwise it looks like a pretty solid list of nominees this year. Lots of great films and performances.

Avatar will clean up.

If any movie beats The Hurt Locker for best picture it will be Up In The Air. Inglourious Basterds would be a long shot but it's the only other film that has more than one Best Picture win this awards season. Avatar has no shot. The awards count so far looks like this...

Best Picture Wins:
The Hurt Locker - 12
Up In The Air - 8
Inglourious Basterds - 3
Avatar - 2
Up - 1
Hunger - 1

Best Director Wins:
The Hurt Locker - 18
Up In The Air - 3
Inglourious Basterds - 2
Avatar - 1
Up - 1
Invictus - 1
Where The Wild Things Are - 1

Screenplay Wins:
Up In The Air - 13
Inglourious Basterds - 7
500 Days Of Summer - 6
A Serious Man - 3
The Fantastic Mr. Fox - 2
The Hurt Locker - 1
Up - 1
In The Loop - 1

Like I said in an earlier post. The only thing that is a race this year is between Bullock and Streep, with Carey Mulligan as the dark horse.

Unless you have some stake in it, try and let it go. The Oscars really don't mean that much, and winning one doesn't mean much either. Remember that no film is technically "better," it's all about preference. And movies that generally win these awards are those that strike a personal chord with the viewers; sentimental, fell-good types of films. If not for these types of movies, Spielberg may not have any awards. Avatar is one of those types, as was Titanic, as are other films that have been nominated. Never underestimate the power of a feel-good film (see Babe).

Nope. It's only 54.3% for the drama category, and only 1 (Slumdog) in the last 5 years. Throw in the fact that only 11 films have ever won best picture and didn't have an acting nod and that only 1 film in history that won both the PGA and DGA lost the best picture and I'd say it's great odds against it.

That's because if the Golden Globe winner for Drama doesn't get it then its usually the Golden Globe Best Picture for Comedy. Considering that The Hangover isn't an Oscar nominee then statistically speaking Avatar most certainly has more than a fair chance of winning.

I'm still hoping Basterds comes through with the come-from-behind win.

Show me a nominee that was released in 2010 and I'll call it the 2010 Oscars.

Gotta tell ya ... now that I think about it, I think 2010 is more appropriate.

The entire competition occurs in 2010 -- the films are nominated in 2010, voting occurs in 2010, lobbying occurs in 2010, and the awards ceremony occurs in 2010. The movies were released to the public in 2009 -- but not entered in the competition until 2010. The competition begins at nomination, and ends with awards ... all of which is encapsulated in 2010. Eligibility for the competition simply requires a 2009 release.

The fact that the Oscars itself calls it the 2010 Academy Awards seems to indicate that 2010 is right.

Actually, the formal name is The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences 82nd Awards. No year, probably because people tend to be confused when it comes to annual dating. Simply put, this is the awards show for films that were released in 2009, period.

The reason it takes place in the following calendar year is because it is logistically impossible to hold the awards ceremony within 1 week of the cut-off date for qualification (which is always December 25).

Well I think there is a difference in deep down caring and leaving your name in and if you win you win, if not who cares.

If I have the chance to put my name itno a drawing to win a million bucks, of course I am going to put my name into it, if I don't win who really cares. This is obviously a little less drastic but think the same principle applies for him. He has already won before.

i hope avatar doesnt win anything so losers would stop bashing it, movie is good but give it to the freaking hurt locker so people will stop crying over it.

Iron, you and some other keep talking about the haters bashing it. I don't know of many haters in this thread. Most have said they liked it or even loved it, but there were things about it they didn't like, or that they don't believe it should get best picture. That doesn't make them haters.

I don't think Hurt Locker was better then Avatar though, they are two very different genres. Hurt Locker was good but, i think people have too much faith in this movie, i thought it had a weak ending, and was some what short, or at least felt short.

I would say sadly, the only real blockbusters i enjoyed last year was Inglorious Basterds(well first 3/4 of it anyway) and Star Trek.

I personally would only rank Avatar above one film thats nominated this year. Blindside. It's not a bad film, but outside the tech it's not something I'd ever care to see again.

Avatar should nearly sweep the tech awards. Can't deny it's visual impact. But Best Picture? nope....not by a long shot. (but then, I'm still reeling over Crash getting best pic so anything can happen)

Im a huge GI Joe fan, but the movie I will never watch. They just used the Brand to try and sell it. Its a joke. How anyone could be entertained by such garbage is beyond me.

However, some polls are saying The Hurt Locker may win. I just bought the DVD, hope its lives up.

Yeah, I entered. I think there's going to be quite a lot of people vying for the top prize since this years Oscars are the easiest to predict in a very long time.

Much as I want to see the oscars recognising sci-fi/fantasy stuff (again after LOTR:ROTK) I'm indifferent about it this year. I don't care if Avatar gets Best Picture or not. The Dark Knight should have won last year and it didn't, usual story it wasn't even nominated - missed opportunity there. I think Avatar was a good, fun film with some serious stuff going on in it too but....I dunno, it didn't change my world. Neither did TDK but I seemed to enjoy it more, perhaps because we're all long-invested in Batman whereas Avatar is a newbie franchise. Maybe when I see how it stands up to multiple viewings my feelings will change.

Hurt Locker should lose because the producer guy was callin voters up and asking them to vote for the film.
Also, I heard the story was ripped off and the dude it's about is going to sue them or something and even has footage of actual stuff going on there.

I'd love Avatar to win as a final blow to all the haters lol
Or Basterds or D9!

I can understand people not thinking Avatar was the best piece of cinema like everrrrr, I am one such person, but can someone explain to me in one post why there are those who hate it? I've seen people disdainfully refer to fans as Avatards so I presume theres some venom there but I haven't kept up with the Avatar threads to find out how that happened.

tomandshell

Avatar got people excited about going to see 3-D movies on the big screen and paying a few dollars more for the experience. That is moving the industry forward in a new direction--look at how much Alice made this weekend. New records are going to be made because of 3-D ticket sales, and even more and more theaters are going to be in a mad rush to convert to digital projection and 3-D screens.

For the industry, Avatar pushed things forward into a promising financial upswing in the midst of a bad economy. The industry is going to want to recognize a film like that because it's reinforcing and supporting and expanding everything that Hollywood is scared of losing in the face of piracy and downloads. It got butts in seats and gave people a taste for more. That's why there's a good chance that they will give it Best Picture, because of what it means for the future of Hollywood.

But I hope Hurt Locker gets Best Director.

I think people love to Hate anything that gets to "big" or popular. I dont know if its just to make them feel different and cool, but its a common occurrence. I hope Avatar wins to piss off all the crybabies.

I'm suprised that people actually care so much who wins. Its not like they get an award as well. I can understand saying you want one or the other to win but to get so emotional about it and call people names and all the hate just seems kind of dumb to me. If I listed my top 20 favorite movies of all time I doubt more than 2-3 have won best picture so it really doesn't make much of a difference to me who wins. I hardly ever even watch the Oscars anyway.

That factors into it, consider the Titanic haters or conversely the Star Wars PT lovers. That going against the grain of popular opinion.

But I was just wondering what genuine reasons people have to hate Avatar as opposed to not liking it for the sake of being different.
