I am making the other version seen in this picture also, and will have pics of it up soon

Here is the prototype I made.

There were a few minor issues with it that had to be fixed.

1. It was to dark....Solved.

2. The shoulder pads needed to be wider....Solved.

3. My model has a really bad porn mustache....Still there.

Thank You,

The shoulder pads keep giving me a hard time, first they were to small now they seem a little big, what do you think, should I just keep the shoulder pads the size they are?

The figure is a 21st Century Toys super soldier body so it has narrower shoulders than any Hasbro or normal Ultimate Soldier bodies they shouldn't look monstrous on a anything except mabee one of those slim True Types. But the character doesn't seem to call for something really slim.

That outfit is going to look great! Super job!

Vivisect
01-17-2010, 09:32 PM
I'm glad you all like it.

I ended up going with the leather instead of suede since the way the prop costume looks it was turning out to be hard to mimic with suede. The props suede seemed to be seriously weathered and matted in places, and the different suede's I was using kept just looking fuzzy or to clean and uniform in color.

I have a lot of really good Ultrasuede that you cant tell is fake unless you see the back, the edges or of coarse smell it (since it wont really have a scent), but that would have required hemming all around every edge so it didn't fray, and at that point it would not have looked right because the actual costume is mostly just cut suede/leather with very little stitching on the entire costume.

So I dug through some bags of mats and and came across a leather jacket that was the right color, had thin leather, was a little bit beat up and roughed up, and seems to match good, and best of all comes weathered the natural way.:D

I was curious to see it with a Weequay head so I did this real quick.

Its the head of one of Dorgmals that has hair.

The part that hangs below the belt on the one in the pictures is a bit longer than it should be, but I thought I would leave it a bit long so you guys can trim it to the length you want once you have it on a body and set up the way you want it. with all the different body styles and such Id rather leave it a bit to long than to short. I'm also gonna be modding the shoulder pads a bit so they do not stick out as far.

Well I got an update, this one is pretty much done, I fixed the shoulders and finished the belt, I had to sculpt the buckle as the piece in the pictures from earlier is the only one I can find and since it's the perfect size and shape, I thought I'd look into casting it before I drilled holes in it, though that may be a while since I've never cast anything before and therfore dont have the supplies for that right now. When I can make that happen I would send along replacements if there wanted.

I wanted to have the the first 2 complete including gauntlets, but I chipped a tooth last night and instead of working on anything I spent the night curled up on the sofa crying and whining about dentists and the what the hell the restaurant could possibly have put in my spaghetti that would chip a tooth.:horror

Well I thought I'd post a pic of the assembly line.

http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/2323/dscf5553.jpg

Ive had a small delay, as my sewing machine has been being really uncooperative for the last 2 days for me and for me and my wife, though its been much worse for her since I always have to a lot by hand anyhow. But not to fear I have a loaner machine coming tomorrow that is a much better one than mine.

The upside to my machine starting to conk out is that my wife has finally agreed it would be worth it for us to get a really nice professional machine since we would use the hell out if it.:banana
It may seem strange for a grown man to get excited over a getting a sewing machine, but I am a little strange.:monkey5 Anyhow it also means I pull off much higher quality, do tiny hems, work with leather easier and much less hand work.

Almost forgot the picture of the 2 completed ones that are about ready to ship to Chakaman and Dorgmal.

http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/4422/dscf5565.jpg

The finished ones are studded and I have pulled thread through the padded sections to pull the sections together to make it look more like the reference pics with out bulking it up to much.

They look fantastic Vivisect.

Thank you.

The unfinished ones are yours, galactiboys and mine.

I've made enough studs to make about 20 more and got the patterns filed away and every thing else I need to make more should anyone else be interested any time in the future.

Vivisect
01-25-2010, 06:18 AM
I made more progress than I thought I would last tonight / this mourning, so now I have 3 of them complete, and a forth just needs studs.

http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/7128/dscf5572z.jpg

The bottom part on the one to the left was shaped a bit but is still longer than it should be so it will still need a trim, the rest are being left alone for people to trim and shape themselves.

Also I finally found Back shots of the prop costume and found that it does not have studs on the back at all so I've stopped adding them.

Well I my loaner sewing machine didn't get here till late last night and I had a good part of the day to work
on stuff so I worked on the bits the that didn't require a sewing machine and completed chest piece #4.

http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/2793/dscf5584r.jpg

I decided since I had some time I would experiment with the model piece I used as a belt buckle on the prototype
since that was my original choice for the belt buckle since it was almost perfect, but I could only find 1, and I didn't
want to drill the holes till I looked into options for duplicating it.

So my first try worked out good, I just made a simple push mold into a piece of Sculpy and baked it. Then just
pushed a small ball of sculpy into the mold using a damp paper towel to wipe the mold first so the Sculpy doesn't
stick and it worked perfectly

The one on the belt is the one I sculped completly by hand, the gray plastic one is from the proto type belt, and
the others are pretty much exact duplicates of the gray one, though it is hard to tell from the picture they did
come out dished like the gray one.

http://i739.photobucket.com/albums/xx39/William_Mayers_III/Weequay%20Custom%20Outfit/DSCF5588.jpg

Im actually glad I didnt send any out with the scupted one now since I like the new one so much better. I had lots
of time with not much to do so I made about 15 of these plus I spent some time making enough of both types of
studs to make about 20 of these outfits.

I am drilling out the buckles now, and will give them and all the studs there paint jobs shortly.

Now that I got a sewing machine again I will be getting caught up on the 2 tan quilted tunics for Dorgmal and
Chakaman tonight, and should be done with those by tonight or tomorrow at the latest.

Is it just me or do those unfinished belt buckles look like pancakes.:D

A very sharp one.:rotf

Actually 3 different size drill bits and its done by hand to get to the size needed and close to the edge with out breaking it,
it takes only like a minute a buckle since I made them pretty thin and I've done like 15 of them now.

Is there anything you cant do??:D

Well I took a little break from working on the outfits because when I got home there was a package in the mail
from the Snow Corporation (thanks again Dorgmal :D), so I decided to do a little head painting for a change of
pace and get my self a proper model for this outfit put together.

I scrounged up a brown pair of boots that I thought looked a bit better with this than the black ones I was using,
and finally got around to opening a Hasbro Tatooine Luke that I've had sitting around for at least 12 years just
to steal his pants, since they were the best match I had on hand :lol, and as a bonus I also found he came with
a pair of binoculars.

I'm glad everyone likes it, and of course the head courtesy of the Snow Corp is better
than anyone could hope for, its even better when its in your hands as pictures just
don't do it justice.

I still gotta make, or get a hold of better pants, boots and a shirt but that can wait till
I get other people their stuff. Some of the colors of this stuff are a pain to get right
since they are different depending what pictures you look at, like the pants look tan
in movie shots but it 's just the lighting, since the prop pant were a lighter off white.

The filmed shots of the Weeqauy's look darker than they are and loose there bit of red
tint because of the lighting, so I like to use well lit prop shots for colors of clothes and
paint, then whatever lighting you display things under tends to makes them look right.

Here are the shots I used for the head colors in case anyone wants them, though the
flash made mine look redder in my picture.

This is the Skiff Master mask, I think the bone was added when they reused it for the
Max Rebo band member for the S.E. of version of ROTJ or for one of the prequels as
apparently this mask was used in every film since ROTJ.

http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/3182/weequaymask.jpg

This is the mask from the guy who wore this costume, they are basically the identical
except for the braids.

with the ones I have yet to make, to improve them.

The final bit I added was the large and small working pouches to the sides of the belt and are removable.

This is the skiff master tunic I did for Chakaman and Dorgmal. I found that I couldnt hem the neck
properly as it was getting to thick and breaking needles on the machine, and even with the part
I got hemmed on one, it looked to thick and weird. So I had to improvise on the neck, and do
something keep it from fraying and give it a cleaner edge.

http://i739.photobucket.com/albums/xx39/William_Mayers_III/Weequay%20Skiff%20Master%20Tunic/DSCF5634.jpg

I figure the skiff master tunic will look much better one its been given a wash of paint to darken
up where its stitched, and given a bit of weathering. I've left it to you to decide how much
weathering you want to give it.

that is interested In a Weequay outfit just send me a PM.

The set consists of the main leather body armor, padded in the front and back, leather gauntlets
and belt with 2 removable working leather pouches that open and can be fastened shut, not
that I could think of anything to stick in them but I always liked it when tiny pouches work.:D

I would just like to point out that the boots, pants, white shirt and obviously the figure itself
would not be included:monkey5.

Anyhow, If any one needs anything in particular made send me a PM with a reference picture,
it doesn't necessarily have to be Star Wars related (I used to do a lot of WWII stuff years ago),
I'm up for doing any custom clothing and such in trade for interesting bits and whatnot, or cash,
and in that case I'd definitely try and keep the price low but this stuff can be very time consuming
so its hard to do to much of this stuff just for fun (not to mention my wife would murder me:horror),
anyhow PM me and we can work something out.

Heres a link to all the Pictures of this from prototype to finished Version
http://s739.photobucket.com/albums/xx39/William_Mayers_III/Weequay%20Custom%20Outfit/

The piece in the from and back that hangs below the belt can be trimmed to fit whatever
figure body is being used, I leave it a little long just to be safe.

I'm working on a bunch more of these right now as I got 5 already ordered including yours,
which should be done in a day or 2. Then I gotta check for pruneface cape material, I
already had the stuff for the vest.

I actually just made about 20 of the tiny pouches because I thought they would be perfect
for my Jawas to replace the molded Hasbro stuff they came with.:D

galactiboy
02-02-2010, 07:24 AM
Well... if you've got some extra pouches (or can make more) let me know... I'm trying to upgrade some jawas as well. Are you able to make the full bandoliers?

Vivisect
02-02-2010, 07:41 AM
I was actually thinking about making a bunch of various sized bandolier's loaded with pouches in a few different color leathers, thats one of the things I used to make a ton of, years ago for 1/6 scale military figures, though most of them were cloth. Leather is a bit easier because usually one out of every few small cloth pouches usually comes apart when turning it inside out, also for leather the flaps don't need to be hemmed because it doesn't fray.

Ill let let you know when I get some going.

San_Holo

I would be up for some pouches/banoliers for the Hasbro Jawas if you get round to it as well.

cool, ill probably get on that soon, I thinking of definitely doing Jawa and Tusken raider versions, and any thing else that comes my way.

I'll keep you all updated.

I'm also in deciding on a way to start cataloging the stuff I'm doing so people that are interested can see stuff Ive already done, since I can always remake things even years later because I keep all the patterns I make along with instructions I make for myself, and file them for future use. If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

galactiboy
02-02-2010, 08:36 AM
You could start your own thread in the custom section... showcasing past and present work; as well as updating with new project/commissions.

Vivisect
02-02-2010, 08:47 AM
I thought of that but then every thing gets all spread out with people posting and such then it would get hard to find anything.

I also thought of using the my blog (I hate that term) as sort of a catalog but that doesn't seem any good either.

I could start a normal thread like you suggest and keep editing the first post to add links to the post of the completed versions of individual items, or add the links to the blog, then have a link to the list in my signature (well not really a link since they don't seem to work anymore) anyhow the trying to think of a good way is making my head hurt.:lol

galactiboy
02-02-2010, 08:54 AM
That's usually the best way to do it... your thread will get knocked down; but you will be seen by the widest number of members.

You could always start one in here as well if you are just wanting to focus on SW figures. And threads don't get buried quite so quickly here :lol

I tend to agree Bill, I would just start your own thread in this section.

looking good. what color mix you guys using?

On the head, I used a mix of burnt sienna and burnt umber. I then sprayed dullcoat sealer on it.

The hair is just cotton thread twisted into braids. I placed a dab of superglue on them so they would stay tight. I then painted them black, sealed it with dullcoat and then added the lighter colors to make it more movie accurate. Another coat of dullcoat was added. Once the paint dried on the braids, I hit the ends with a hammer so they would split a bit.

:horror, I hope they were not glued to the head when started swinging that hammer around.:lol

I painted head black, then then very dark brown on most, then a few layers of dry brushing using burnt sienna that has been tinted darker in different shades, then a final coat of clear acrylic glaze that I slightly water down to get a very weak satin finish

When I did that I originally tried to make the shoulders separate pieces and then attach them but with the
combination of leather, padding and backing fabric being so thick it lead to me breaking my machine, but it
was a cheap machine and I needed a better one anyhow.:D Sadly now that those are already sent, the
machine I'm using now can sew through 8 layers of fairly thick leather without flinching.

The shoulder parts seem to hold there shape pretty good when the hooks are used as I have them up as far
into the arm pit as could get without restricting arm movement. It also helps get the shoulder parts wet and use
rubber bands or twist ties (preferably the thick rubber coated one that come with Hasbro 12" figs) and clamp
down it to arms and around the chest up by the armpits till they dry. I actually did this to both of them before
shipping, but they probably flattened out during shipping. Anyhow I hope this help when you finish him up.

Ive made a couple changes to this bunch, Ive added stitching around the neck, and the
back side of the padded area is done a little neater, on the first batch I didn't hem square
patch of cloth the padding is stuffed in and it had the tendency to fray...badly.:monkey3

:horror Amazing figures! I remember as a kid Weequay was always my favoirate to play with, but he has the silly hands that one went one way and the other went the other to hold the vibro ax better. I always wished I could move the wrist so he could hold other weapons better. Whenever I get some money I'll deffinally be contacting some people about some parts.

As for the vibro ax, once I get my show done on Saturday I may try my hand at one. I've always loved the look of them and think I may know how to do one now. I'll see what I can come up with for everyones projects.

Well there's been a slight delay in the next batch, as the Jawa
slave labor in my sweatshop revolted.:horror

http://www.sonyinsider.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/star-wars-galaxies-jawas-450x337.jpg

Okay..its all lies, my wife made me help her clean the house and
list some crap on eBay like my Mezco 12" Evil Monkey (Ill miss
his evil stare), so apparently I'm the slave labor in the sweat
shop.:D

But all is well again and the ones already ordered will go out on
Tuesday instead of Monday.

Anyhow someone that was getting one of these asked about
getting pants and a shirt, and since I have been meaning to
do that for myself anyhow, I got a start on that. Then I ran
into problems as I haven't made 1:6 scale pants in like 8 years
since I have always tried to avoid doing them as much as
possible because getting the crotch area to look right can
sometimes be a pain in the a$$.

So I go to dig through my old patterns and find out they have
vanished, which was disappointing because they were not ones
I made, but from a 1:6 scale WWII pattern book I used to have.:monkey2
So I had to make a new pattern and I think the pants I did with
it came out ok and I just need to tweak a few things on it.

Anyhow here are the first 2 pairs I did to go with a Weequay
outfit, they look white in the picture but are actually the same
beige as the prop costume, the only good place in the house
to take pictures at night has florescent lights, or I gotta use
the flash, they both seem to show any light color as white.
Though my digital camera likes to do to much of its own
thinking instead of just excepting whats in front of it as
correct, and I had my fill of fighting with electronics to
make them cooperate back with my Nintendo.:lol

I made these a tad bit baggy like the costume pants, but
tightening up pant legs is a 2 min fix if they seem to loose.
Kit Fisto was a cheap eBay purchase and is waiting for me
to start making some sets of full Jedi gear.

I had some WIP shots of the studs I never put up, but since this is the most tedious part of these
so I thought I would post them.

The pyramid shaped ones are made of sculpy and the small round spikes are just model sprue pieces
that have been ground to shape. There are more of the pyrimid one as I need 2 for the chest and
2 for the bigger pouch and only 2 round ones for the chest.

http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/2209/dscf6652.jpg

This is after getting a few coats of bronze acrylic paint I mix up. I paint tiny stuff like this on
parchment paper used for baking because the paper wont rip when I pull them off and I wont
have bits of paper stuck to them, but it still soaks in paint so their not sitting in a puddle of
paint when I go to the next step of throwing a gunmetal wash on them.

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/1407/dscf6659h.jpg

These are the finished ones that have had a wash or 2 of gunmetal then 2 coats of
acrylic gloss glaze though a lot of the pyramid one in this batch were repainted cause
they didn't turn out right because the tip and edges should have more bronze showing
through since I am trying to make them look tarnished.

http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/3963/dscf6661d.jpg

Then when I'm ready to use them I match them up by size and the finish because
the tend to vary a tad bit.

The other thing I tried was wax paper and that works great cause the paint wont
stick at all but it doesnt absorb extra paint and water from doing washes.

I just finished a batch of shirts and pants and thought I would post pics.

I still have to do a quick finishing job on the fronts of the shirts and add a closure. I made the shirt with an open
front so it would be easy to put on the figure since some peoples heads are most likely firmly glued in place and
didn't want that to be an issue. I also figured since the prop shirt had a an opening at the neck even if it didn't go
all the way down the shirt, this would be behind the leather armor anyhow. Now that i think about it, I did all this
work on the shirts for ony like 10% of it to be seen.:lol

http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/7990/dscf6674.jpg

The bottom pair on the pile has been tea stained since I though the pants were still a bit to light, though its hard
to tell from the pics the top 2 pairs are the same color and a bit lighter than the bottom pair.

http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/6285/dscf6673g.jpg

This stuff is made of cotton so it dyes easy and permanently, so if anyone wants their shirts with a blue tint, just
put a drop or 2 of blue acrylic paint in a glass of water (not needed but you can add salt to help set it color), dunk
them in , sqeeze them out and rinse under cold water, using hot will set the color better but can suck if it was to
dark as it will be harder to lighten back up, repeat till you get them the color you want.

It is just an African American Dragon body... although I'm using Twisting Toys hands as they have a bit more character than the Dragon ones.

You can see the original head in the background on top of my part bins :lol And his name evidently was Roscoe. Although he's well covered so a Caucasian body would work just as well as long as you painted the wrists and neck area.

cool. thanks GB. I have a nude Dragon but think the chest is a bit too big. I'll probably file the chest down to see if it looks better. Did you shape the leather chest piece? can you wet it to shape it so it will retain it's shape? It all seems to fit really nice.
The TT hands work really nice too. Might have to pick some of those up as well. Also what pants are you using?

Did you shape the leather chest piece? can you wet it to shape it so it will retain it's shape? It all seems to fit really nice.

:horror WARNING :horror

It should fit and lay right the way it is, but if you still
feel it needs shaping be very careful when wetting it to
use cold water and not to soak it in water for long. It is
very sturdy but there are a few parts of it that are glued
or reinforced with glue, with something similar to super
glue that bonds leather extremely well, but dont know
what long exposure to hot or warm water will do to it.

Heres whats glued so you will know.

The studs

The leather circles the studs are on

The shoulder pads tiny straps may or may not be glued
or reinforces with glue (the first batch was sewn but it
took a hell of a lot longer and caused a few ruined parts)

The part behind the studs and same part in back are
sewn but reinforce with glue and to help it hold shape.

If any studs do fall off make sure to use a tooth pick
and put only a tiny bit of glue, because any access
that squeezes out will soak into the leather and turn
it almost black, and this is instant and unfixable.

Anyhow I just wanted to let you guys know these
things just in case.:D

Ryan1982
02-22-2010, 11:26 PM
Haha. Thanks for the warning Bill. After I posted that I thought about the parts that were glued and how they would respond to water as well as the leather itself and how it would respond to being exposed to water. I've managed to shape it a little without water just folding the leather in certain places a little.
Love the outfit by the way Bill. Very good stuff man! Cant wait to see what else you are able to come up with for other figures.

Yeah, not sure how long it will be... but it was one of the WIP items they showed during last years SDCC.

Sideshow is finally moving into non-standard body figures... so its pretty exciting to see what they will be able to do. I had a 2nd Gammy, but traded him to another member as the thought of another 8 hours of painting was not very appealing :lol

The prop shirt in the film was white, it looks different colors in some shots due to lighting so it is really a matter of personal preference.

This is the costume used in the film.

This shows a bunch of shot and how the color looks different depending on the lighting.
The bottom middle pic looks like its got a blue tint which is where Kenner got it from.
Also the pant look much darker in some shots, which it why I made the a bit darker.

I wanted to let people that have gotten a Weequay set with the shirt,
that I forgot to let them know that the shirts are a little stiff because
of the fabric I used to try and match the weave of the prop shirt.I did
soak some with some fabric softener and that helped a lot, but what I
forgot to tell people was that if it still seams stiff to try carefully turning
it inside out and rubbing the inside with a little sandpaper, particularly
the sleeves.

I likely wont be using this fabric for much more than the Weequay shirt
since its the only thing I see it matching so any other shirts I do for
other stuff will not have this little issue.

Already taken care of, now that I am over the whole food poisoning thing I'm back to workin on stuff.

I always thought of Weequay's shirt was blue because of the Kenner figure.

Thats because Hasbro though it was blue because they used to just go by one picture, two if they are lucky.
Lighting makes a huge difference on how colors look. I have no problem with people wanting it blue, its just
up to peoples personal preference.

galactiboy
03-03-2010, 12:59 PM

Bill any suggestions for making brown clothing look faded? I have some hobbit clothing I'm trying to weather.

Someone suggested soaking it in watered down white acrylic. I really didn't see much change. I'm scared to use bleach.

Vivisect
03-04-2010, 07:25 AM
I would try lightly dry brushing it with pretty much dry acrylic paint, then rub of any access with with a piece of paper towel after its dry. Or leave it in the sun for a few days or under one of those tube UV lights meant for reptile tanks, (found that out by accident), or a black light will fade stuff fast (A floresent one not a screw in one). Also you could try it not watering down the paint as much and wait till it drys completely on its own then rinse it out, use hot water as it will set the color in better.

Ryan1982
03-04-2010, 12:04 PM
chalk pastels work really well too. just shave some of the chalk off with an exacto knife and apply with a thick bristle paint brush. just work it into the clothes and it'll give you a good faded weathered look.

That's awesome Mark, if you don't mind, at your convenience, of course. I have time, I'm still waiting to get a AA HT TT base body for my Weequay. I can't wait to put this guy together. YOu both really helped me on this one. Thank you.

BTW, I'd really suggest saving yourself some money and buying a Dragon. Really good articulation is wasted on a character like Weequay and the regular AA true-types are hard to come by.

You could get a slim, but it would be to small. Get a Dragon, they're like $10.

I think the size of the head works better with a Buck or Dragon as well.

I thought so too, I thought the wider shoulders would offset the head size, mabee with it being a
bald head it doesn't seem as big. Marks looks great and that's on a slim I think.

I'm looking forward to making a Jedi out of my other head.

i thought the head would be WAY too big for a slim, but that pic looks great. maybe my head is bigger for some reason?

I think the shoulder pads on the armor help a little too because the stick out a little.

:lol :lol :naughty

The head is a bit oversized... but once on a body seems to balance out fairly well.

I am surprised though that Marks is on a slim... I really would not have thought that would work. But still the Dragons are about a 1/3 cost... just need to swap the hands as they look really dated. I used Twisting Toyz so in total with body and hands I was out around $12.50.

Well firstly let me say Prog.. your head looks fine! Not to big LOL.

I think my one looks smaller than most :( but trust me it is no smaller than any one else's LOL...

Whats the difference?

Well mine is on a TT Afro slim body... because I love em. The other difference is mine has no neck. I hacked the neck off so I could pose the head in different positions.

ow and I love my Weequay

They will be done very soon along with some of the other stuff I have been working on. I've pretty much just gotta make the belts for the batch I am finishing up, and having to make more belt buckles has delayed things a bit.

Sorry for the late post but I finally found a body for my Weequay. I still need to attach the braids and I'm not really happy with the face color. With the Gamorrean Guards coming soon, I'm anxiously wanting to add him to my collection. Great job on the costume Vivisect and Dorg's thanks again for the boots.

Ah, small hope when I saw this thread bumped that Viv had returned.

Was watching ROTJ last night and seeing Weequay reminded me of what a killer job he did on the clothing.
