Stupid parents are more often than not... unfortunately...
I'm sure this kind of things happen a lot, we just don't hear about them as much...

You think protective services is a better place for the kid to be? They've assessed the situation. The best place for the kid is with his mother. Father out of commission. Poor kid is going through enough. Let him be with his mum.
