*****DISCLAIMER: This mail has no intention to bring down anyone, especially anyone who likes the film, especially the film makers, in case they are reaing this!!********

I read an article in a local movie magazine of mine and they claimed that one characteristic of this "40 year old Virgin" is to collect collectibles and face them day and night... something along that line... Not that being a virgin is a bad thing, but somehow I felt that the critics, perhaps not liking the film, has somehow protray toys collectors in a rather negative light.

I have personally NOT watch the film yet and wouldn't know if the director has such intention. I went on further to the film offical website and notice that there is a pic of the main character (the virgin) and shows some of his collections, they are displayed on top of his living room, not many though and I wonder if they are SS stuff.

I wonder who has actually watch the film and share your opinion on this.

We discussed this when the film came out - yes, there are many, many SSC items in the film, some featured.

In fact Chris did this cool flash page to show just how many -

SPOILERS:

The theme of the movie is sort of that collectors subliminate their sexual frustration through other means such as collecting and once you manage to "grow up" and have sex then you don't need your "toys" any more.

Despite this prejudice the film is mildly amusing and Carrell is definitely a comedian to watch as his career grows.

Yes, that is a pretty strong prejudice. I collect LOTR because I love LOTR. Sex has nothing to do with it. :wacky

Yeah, the collection is clearly intended to show that the main character is locked in a perpetual childlike state and is a byproduct of his complete inability to socialize. It certainly isn't portrayed in any positive light, except that you might get rich selling your stuff on ebay when you "grow up."

As for the film itself, I thought it was amusing in spots, but about 45 minutes too long. Through that last half hour it literally felt like it was never going to end.

I'm in my forties and once almost had sex and I still collect toys so I'm not sublimating anything hardly at all. So there.
I can't give you an absolute take on the filmmakers intent, and frankly I think half the time they are full of crap when they try to explain the "inner meaning" of there masterpieces anyway. This is not a deep and meaningful treatise on the human condition (trust me). It was done for belly laughs. And the movie is hilarious and I strongly recomend renting it and watching the deleted scenes. Some very funny stuff got left out. Plus the unrated edition has more profanity and pictures of porn star boobies than the theatrical release. Whats not to love?

I finally got around to buying it. I really liked it, very funny. Nice to see a few Sideshow boxes in the background.

That's pretty funny. LOL

Unless you were being serious, then you can disregard that comment.:sick

I am only thirty, and am married with three children (all created the old fashioned way). I pointed this out to friends who said that my collection and closet full of boxes reminded them of the 40 Year Old Virgin, but that didn't change their mind.

haha. yeah exactly.
Everytime I hear this reference from a friend I always just say "Thats funny cause i collect the same stuff except I get laid like a mutha. Maybe you should give it a shot cause its the new cool thing to do and it'll get you some luvin. Then when you find out its really just you, you can sell me all the stuff youve collected for cheap!" :joy
i thought the movie was a blast and surprisigly realistic. I was expecting it to be over the top (a la Anchorman which I loved) but Carrell the virgin could very well really exist.

Glad to read that. Now we know your not the Tom who's dating Katie Holmes.

I don't know about you guys but I really have gotten to the point of thinking the anti "geek" prejudice is sort of amusing. If someone can make themselves feel better by comparing me to a character in a movie farce, what the heck? Glad I could be of service. I have grown comfortable in my skin in my impending dotage, verile manly man though I remain. They will have to pry my Buffy action figures from my cold dead hands I tell you before I will relinquish my geeky hobbies.

And elwood49, I can truthfully say that I have had sex. Every now and again with someone else although traffics been slowing down lately.
I think we live in a world with very few 40 year old virgins even among the comic book and collectibles community. I think it's the fault of the internet. Anyone can get there hedges trimmed these days. Even if travel and fat chicks are involved. You need never be lonely again.

All comments made with tongue planted firmly in cheek and no offense to anyone intended including overweight one handed typists.

Okay tomandshell, that is untoppable. This thread has made my otherwise dull day. I hadn't expected a lot of yuks in the LotR forum (my stupid predjudice) but there are some right funny folks here. I should have been visiting before the 12" line was announced.

And this thread has officially earned a transfer to "Other" and is bordering on "Sandbox" material...

Thanks for all the comments, as a starter of this thread, I think I have enough good comments to watch the film, especially the UNRATED version to enjoy a good laugh....

Thanks once again...

I'm glad to see he won a Golden Globe for The Office. :banana

How cool would a 1:6 scale 40 Year-Old Virgin figure be? He could come with a 1:6 scale of a 1:6 scale MIB Steve Austin's boss.

It would be life imitating art imitating life... or something like that.

Haven't seen the film yet, but I plan to.

I love toys, I love sex, and get plenty of both (rare for a married guy!):banana
