View Full Version : Sideshow got me, I missed the Grey Hulk!

Being a huge fan of Pablo’s and Martins work it is with great sadness that today the 13th January 2006 I am without a Grey Hulk Exclusive. Sideshow in their kindness and wisdom (they obviously hate us Europeans) decided to put this absolutely fantastic sculpt from one of the best sculptors in the business at the timely hour of 4.00am (based on Azogs initial link). Now being of sound mind I was in bed resting for the day ahead after waiting till 12.00am just in case they decided to put up this marvellous sculpt. You see I mainly collect their Marvel line and mainly their exclusives. But was I given an opportunity NO I WASN’T. Instead in their kindness and wisdom they sent me an email giving me the Heads UP on an action figure of Aragorn. Now while some people maybe interested in action figures, I isn’t one of them. Sideshow in its wisdom decided to move the ordering days from Friday to Thursday nights. Hell why not have it on Wednesday knowing that most people work the next morning while most people have weekends off.
This is not the first time Sideshow has ****ed over its European and non-US buyers. I have the fantastic Predator on order but this is only being shipped from the US warehouse and not the EU one so as well as paying $999 I pay duty, Import taxes and possibly big shipping fees.
It’s about time the people in Sideshow realise that the US market is not their only market. How would the US collectors have felt if SS decided to put this up at 4.00am your time while you were asleep? IMO it shows a complete lack of understanding of how people feel. Why couldn’t they have at least put it up like the usual times of 12.00am?
Maybe Sideshow can have someone respond, but I’d doubt that they would have the courage to explain how they are treating us Europeans.
BTW This piece will cost $299 plus shipping for you guys (It’s made in China). But by the time Sideshow ship it to me it will have cost close to $400 between delivery and VAT.
( I estimate that I have bought $8,000 worth of stuff from SS with about the same on order, I deserve more respect).

Still a crazy time to put it up. And on a Thursday too. Why not Friday like normal. I ain't looking for an arguement with people. This thread is not about that. I want an explaination from SS why they have no respect for EU collectors.

It's always gonna be a bad time for somebody. Try living in Australia, at least you have a European warehouse! Completely agree with you though Bullseye, this piece means way more to me than that 12" doll - they should have given better info regarding the release of this piece.
However, it's great to see that SS has introduced such a low limited edition, and I'm very happy for all those that were lucky enough to snag one.
I'm a bit worried about the green exclusive though. I hope the edition size isn't too high on this one because many people who have ordered the grey, have also ordered the green. I can see them over-estimating the popularity and ES of this version, as I think many who have both may cancel the green later on, making it's value go downhill.

It does suck for you all I agree. Like you said RD it's gonna be bad for someone so why try to make a big change if it's still gonna piss or screw someone else.
As far as this or that 12" doll  give me the doll. :D

Ha! Ha! We'll see how many are actually kept. I'd bet 30+ are flipped. Statueforum has a ton of flippers as well as here. I flip too sometimes...to each his own. Most people flip at some point whether they intended to or not.

The proper way to do it was to post it up at 12.00am Greenwich time so most people have a chance not 3.00am greenwich time. If i had have know that the Green exclusive was going to be up at 3.00am i'd have gotten up to order it and then would have discovered there was a grey exclusive. Anyway no more comments from me on the matter. I just hope Sideshow thinks more about its collectors outside the US.
Martin I’d like to apologise for my outburst regarding the Grey Hulk. I should have realised that loosing a close friend/member of the family is much more significant than loosing out on a collectible. You know I’m a huge fan of your work and I am still happy that I got the green exclusive.
I would also like to apologise to my fellow forum members about my ‘letting off stream’. I don’t want to be seen as a whiner and I congratulate everyone who was lucky enough to pick up this marvellous piece.

You know it'll be flipped. LE 50...if it even remotely goes high people will flip even if not intending to. I'd have probably flipped if I got it. I'd be happy with the green and even happier with the green if I flipped the grey for a profit. You know the drill...
If you flipped me...you'd be taking a loss by the way. lol

I agree with Bullseye about at least letting us know he was going to be up for pre-order. Also, I agree about the Friday Newsletter now coming on Thursdays. How are we ever supposed to know how things work if they constantly keep changing what they tell us! How many of you logged on early to your Sideshow account and then your newsletter account for the Anakin (or was it Obi-Wan?) priority pre-order and set there refreshing your account page or newsletter page waiting for the link to turn up? Silly me, all I had to do was go to the home page for streamlined pre-order, but I followed the rules! Oh well, I guess "Collect for Life" means having to track down their product on the secondary market for the rest of your life!

I feel you Bullseye. Having the Exclusives shipped to Malaysia, I always expect to add another $150 to $200 on top of each statue for shipping and customs :( . But I have no problem so far on ordering the exclusives as long as I check in in time (Usually it's 2am here).
It is understandable that SS can't satisfy everyone on setting a universal timeframe that will make us all happy. But I was hoping of getting some form of notice on the grey hulk as well.

I don't see much merit in the complaints about the newsletter. It's been going up on Thursday for the last 2-3 weeks and at the same time I believe. So it's a persons duty to check SS site or their newsletter account a few times during Thursday or Friday depending on where your at in the world.

Good point with only 50 available ALOT of people missed out including those in the US. Wheather you were at home watching TV, sleeping, or at the bar. Just one of those things I guess.....
That's a good attitude to have though, I am also happy for those who got it.

Hey, I heard because of the demand and not giving people fair notice...Sideshow was going to increase the edition size..a la the Dr. Doom exclusive.
Wasn't that the point of the online newsletter to give everyone a fair chance? Has it been announced that the newsletter will show up at 10PM EST Thursday from now on? I've always thought it was supposed to be Friday sometime, but still don't know any set time.

The thing is these are so popular and so sought after because of the edition size. If it were the green that was 50 nobody would even be talking about the grey except to ***** that it's not green......

Yeah...I don't really care, but would just like to know if the newsletter is scheduled at a time or what? What's the point of the online newsletter that was supposed to give people an equal shot if you have no idea when it will show up anyway? Sounds about like the old method.

Well it's not that often that a piece will be going up on a Thursday evening. Most will still be done the regular way. If they had announced this piece in advance then the order process would have taken at least 2-3 hours.....

Not for only 50! It would probably still have sold out in only 30 to 45 minutes or so. The real problem is that the newsletter needs to go up at a preset, standard time so that everyone has a fair chance to get online and see it at the same time. That would then give everyone a fair chance at pre-orders like this.
As you might can tell, I'm not quite in as forgiving a mood as I was last night. The more I think about it, the more annoyed I get.

Count me on the missed out list and I'm in the US too. Had to go to bed early last night to prepare for a very early morning. I have to admit while I did expect a limited Grey exclusive I did not anticipate it to be so limited. Yeah, I would have ordered it if I had been one of the lucky ones, but I'm not going to beat myself up over it. Won't be the last time I miss out on something, I'm sure.
Guess, I'll be just as happy with my Green version. Will make my son happy anyway. He's our big Hulk fan and can't figure out why people want to paint Hulk grey, LOL
I was slightly confused too. When I placed my order this morning there was not a full pay option. There were 2 links for the flexpay option. This may be fixed now, but I would have preferred to ordered the full pay option. Guess flexpay may end up being better in the long run. Just confused about the apparent mixup.

Well its all news for me. I thought that Hulk we be going up the same time Aragorn was going up for sale. Just like with Skinner last week. I also thought it was odd there was no Prioity Pre Order for Hulk assuming the edition size would be High.
But for me it has become too much to deal these things. Its like I have to go on a treasure hunt to order these statues. And even with the set times, which suck being sold 10:00am pst or 1:00pm EST while I'm working with the rest of the world.
I guess I'm to blame and didn't read the so-called clues, but whatever. I'm kinda of pissed because I was interested in the piece but know I feel almost betrayed, odd.
Sideshow is very sneaky. Its just bad timing, with the whole "new" login for the news letter and the Prioirity ordering and now the grey hulk which I had no clue about because I trusted Sideshow to send me an email like with Aragorn to give me the heads up.
I imagine there must be alot of pissed people out there, but what can we do, complain, will it work, or cry like babies like I'm doing now. I think I will complain to them also. :crying :crying :crying :crying

I'm really sorry so many people are feeling sad about this, but you gotta realize that with such a TINY edition size this was really the only way to do it to keep scalpers away. If we had even hinted that we would be selling it and how small of an edition size it would be those scalpers would have been SWARMING and practically none of the collectors would have gotten one - plus, if a time had been announced for the gray hulk, it would have been sold out in a nano-second, nevermind 30 minutes or so. This method was just one more way to reward our customer base who loyally reads the Sideshow home page and scans the product pages with a fine-tooth comb.
We didn't announce the time for the Green Hulk versions because their edition sizes are both TBD for now. Oh, and the Skinner and the X3 maquettes went on sale Thursday night with the posting of the newsletter as well, not Friday morning... in most cases, everything except for the scheduled priority pre-orders will always go up for sale with the posting of the newsletter.
Again, I'm sorry you're feeling like we did this to you on purpose, but we really did put some thought behind it, and we can almost guarantee that no scalpers got one, at least take heart in that! (well, unless one of your fellow board members who got one decides to flip it of course :thwak)

I can tell you now that at least 50% of the people who got this are flippers. If i had a chance to get it there was no way i'd ever sell it. Your time for us Europeans was a disgrace IMO. I think it was an excellent way of doing it (and I'm not just saying that because I got one). With the previous newsletter method it wouldn't have been reasonable and there would definitely be justified complaints, but everyone had the chance to read the newsletter and listen to the podcast at the same time. And I really think this DID keep it from the scalpers as we've seen that it's mostly frequent posters here and at SF that got the piece.

Hey Dusty how about in the future if they are going to do something like the grey hulk again (i'll use the hulk as an example)I suggest that you guys put the green exclusive and regular on sale announced. When ever the exclusive sells out you could of announced a lottery contest in a special newsletter for a chance to order the exclusive using the contest form. Have a 12-24 hour window to enter and that's that. Winner's would be contacted if they had been selected with further instructions on how to get their order processed. This option gives everyone a fair chance as long as they entered. It just seems like a good option to think about for next time. What do you think?????

I'm a bit distressed. I didn't know about the Gray Hulk. Probably didn't get the hints, or perhaps I was just sleeping? The scalpers didn't get one, and I didn't get one as well. To me, it amounts to the same. And I'm not happy about it.

Like the first 50 to order the exclusive green would get a shot to order the 50 Grey. I think this would be a better way for the future. If the Green Exclusive was sold out before the morning too i would have really been pissed.
Well in this case, for the people here who missed it, actually the lack of
this piece being available on Ebay, will mean that they'll never get it.
Double-edged sword I know, but as one who missed this item and really
wanted it, I'm thinking there'll be a slim to none chance of me being
successful on the wait list, or getting this piece from a board member,
or on Ebay. This is the most I've ever been disappointed missing a statue.

I can tell you now that at least 50% of the people who got this are flippers. If i had a chance to get it there was no way i'd ever sell it. Your time for us Europeans was a disgrace IMO. But then again i'm only spending $10k on SS stuff maybe its not enough. Sorry to be so tough on you Dusty but someone has to listen to be give out.
No need to apologize, I learned long ago not to take things too much to heart in the passionate arena of collecting :) And I totally feel for you, but honestly, there would not be time that it was posted that would have been perfect. If we had gone 3-5 hours earlier, most people in the US would still be at work and we would get blasted for that - if we had gone later, it would be in the middle of the night for even more of a majority of people. Unfortunately there's just no winning when it comes to world times. :peace

This is a very interesting idea indeed - thanks for your constructive input Skary :) I will pass it along!

I would have had no idea about Hulk had I not listened to the podcast. I know that Pitchin lives in Europe and stayed up very late (and got one) just because of the hint in the podcast.
Hardcore folks would have known that the newsletter was up last Thursday at 7 PST, and known that Skinner and the X3 items began selling at that time, and known that this was a week after the Spider-Man preview--and should have known it might go up for sale. Expecting those things from my past Sideshow experience, and after having heard the clue in the podcast, I sat around for an hour refreshing the newsletter page, went straight for the Hulk and looked around for the special opportunity mentioned in the podcast. I believe that those hardcore nuts who followed the situation closely had a chance to get one based on the events of the past week or so. I know I wasn't the only one.
I actually created a thread alerting everybody to the situation after listening to the podcast (and hours before the preorder went up), but that has now been merged away, so people can no longer clearly see that some of us were indeed trying to get the word out yesterday afternoon and evening. We also began posting immediately when it went up, alerting folks to the situation. We did our best to get the word out!

Well, why such a tiny edition size for such a popular set of characters? Sideshow had to know this would be highly sought after!
...This method was just one more way to reward our customer base who loyally reads the Sideshow home page and scans the product pages with a fine-tooth comb.
So now, not only do we have to spend every pre-order day refreshing the newsletter page all evening until it appears, we have to slow down and read every product page very carefully and risk the pre-order selling out?
... in most cases, everything except for the scheduled priority pre-orders will always go up for sale with the posting of the newsletter.
Ok, fair enough. Set a standard time for the newsletter to be posted each and every week. It appears you are posting them about 6 or 7 PM PST each Thursday, so pick a time and make it a standard and let us know!
...but everyone had the chance to read the newsletter and listen to the podcast at the same time...
No they didn't!! Most of us were expecting the newsletter on Friday because that's when Sideshow has told us the newsletters will come out. We have had the occassional newsletter early on Thursday in the past, and just because the past couple of weeks it has come on Thursday, doesn't mean we should have automatically assumed it would always come on Thursday now! Are we now supposed to just sit there refreshing until it comes up? Whoo Hooo! Spooktacular all year long! I'm going to go buy stock in a keyboard company!!!!

I certainly don't think this is about collectors. I've faithfully followed the Marvel line since it's inception and was hoping to continue my exclusive streak. With an ES of 50, it's less about rewarding your customer base than trying to build buzz when they DO get flipped. Trying to avoid flippers? Please..with such an EXTREME ES of 50 you're COUNTING on people to flip it to generate press and build some credibility in the secondary market--where up until this point--prices have been languishing. With a more moderate ES, say 100-200, it still would've sold out AND collectors would have been satisfied. But like I said, it's all bout the buzz.
And then there's the notion that the newsletter will offer readers a fair shot at the item...
And perhaps Dusty is sincere, but it's in my nature to question authority.

In my eyes scalpers and flippers are different breeds. Scalpers buy with no intent whatsoever of keeping it. Flippers sometimes keep it but if the item rises in value they will consider flipping it to fund more collecting adventures. I said no "scalpers" got this piece, which is true - you guys have proven that most all of them went to faithful board members, which is a good thing IMO, whether they decide to flip later on or not!

I know its a no win situation but an edition size this low should of been done to The Beast Statue. I figure this Hulk and Spidey Statue is going to do well since both characters are among the most popular comic icons. And since there is no Priority pre-order for this I assume the exclusive Green will be high. But lets hope its kinda of low to make me feel better, I still like to cry about it. And I didn't cry when the upped the Doom Statue, but I wouldn't want to see the grey hulk go up. :mexwave

If there had been a precedent for that mechanism, I would agree. But that is not the precedent they have established. For months and months, Sideshow has emphatically told us that the newsletter is the best way to be informed of all upcoming exclusive offers. To then change that paradigm with no warning, and use the website as the means to announce an additional exclusive, was not the best decision, and I can certainly understand people being upset about it.

I missed the exclusive Obi figure.......o well it sucks but I'll get by, for those that dont collect the SW figures no big deal. To me it sucked but in no way did I blame Sideshow, you cant win them all.
I can't see how Sideshow could of done it any better than they did, for the past weeks its been appearing in our accounts Thursday nights or soon after the podcast was up. It just stands to reason that perhaps the newsletter will appear around the same time as before.
If they would of announced 50 gray hulks man every scalper in the world would of been there and hardly anybody from this forum or SF would of gotten one.
And to say that you know that 50% of those who got this are flippers is just wrong to say.
Grrrrr I better end this post before I offend a bunch of people but Sideshow is a collectible company and they make collectibles. Plain and simple.
I've never complained about the edition size (although I've questioned the wisdom of it). My main concern is that there is still no standard for a lot of these things (like when the newsletter is posted) and that is what ends up causing issues like this.

Indeed. This was the first time that something like this happened, and I hope also the last time. I am not complaining about the low ES, but about the way the information on this was spread.

I'm not angry at Sideshow because I missed the Gray Hulk, I'm annoyed at Sideshow because the newsletter came out earlier than we have been lead to believe it will be posted. :peace

Actually, at one point they did sell some of the rare pieces (after they were sold out) to UK customers only.
I was pretty upset because I was ready to order and could have gotten Maul and Stormtrooper but they would not ship to USA...<sigh>. They were gone in minutes.
It happens.
Reason I can Bull is because they are a American company I use to collect a lot of import music ect ect. So I know what it is like trying to get stuff from overseas. But I wouldnt be able to ask a company to change their pre ordering times because it conflicted with my overseas time. Because well that's their location and stuff they release is going to be based on their location not mine.

Sorry Viking but that's a very unfair comparison. You were made well aware of when the Obi-Wan exclusive was going up for pre-order (which, btw, I also missed and blame no one but myself), unlike the Hulk vs Spider-Man. If you were too slow, or unlucky enough to miss out, then there's not much you can do about it. At least you were given the opportunity.
The way I see it, I don't think anybody here is saying that the gray version needed to be announced at all, just that it would have been nice to know when the exclusive, in general, was going to be put up for sale. The early birds who are lucky enough to stumble upon the top secret gray version get a top piece but at least everyone had a fair chance.
And if you wanted to slow the mad rush and greedy scalpers, perhaps Sideshow could just state that the exclusive ES is TBD, as they are doing that a lot lately. Under these circumstances, I would feel that I was given an equal opportunity, no matter what time it was. And if I still missed out, would be completely gracious in defeat. :peace

To me I choose to stay up and wait a little while longer and I have to get up around 2am for work. I could of missed out on the Gray guy but I stayed up and kept checking my account for the newsletter because I wanted this bad. And it paid off. Didnt get much sleep but hey thats the price I paid.

I agree with some of you here. I hope this Gray Hulk experience sets some consistency on the newsletter.
I agree a set time for the letter to be posted is the best way to go about these things. Announce Hulk Vs Spidey to be available for preorder in the newsletter and include all links to all versions up front. It's bad enough to guess the distribution of the newsletter to then after that play scavenger hunt.
Either that or create a priority opportunity raffle order. Accept 500 orders and then choose 50 orders at random.
Whatever happens, let's not argue amongst each other about this. It's clear feelings are still hurt over the whole thing. The word "gray" may never be the same for some in here...

At the end of the podcast section advertising the upcoming preorder for Hulk vs. Spider-Man, they said this:
"The first webslingers to priority preorder the awesome battle diorama will be treated to a very special dilemma indeed. Eeny meany miney moe, we are not letting any more information go."
That sounded mysterious and interesting enough to me to stick around. A few of us did guess correctly what was going to happen.
I bet it's just the light up feature or grey hulk :D

True, and I caught that hint and highly anticipated more than one possible exclusive, but I did not anticipate the small edition size or the early arrival of the newsletter.

But it could get better; set a standard time for the newsletter to be posted each week, say 6PM PST. Then, everyone around the world would be able to login and read the newsletter at the same time and have the same chance. Even our collector friends overseas could wake up to read the newsletter and not have to stay up all night refreshing until it appeared!
I agree with you that a dedicated set time would be perfect. However, it's been going up right around the same time the last 2-3 weeks.
Why should i be mad at people who got theirs fair and square. Look, SS pulled a fast one and theres no ifs buts or maybes. When this was up to order it was 3.00am here. It was around 10.00pm in NYC etc. I even waited up till 12.00 (normal time for Newsletter) but nothing.
I'm saying be mad at those that will flip it or scalp it. They are to blame more than SS. Pulled a fast one? Give me a ******* break. They gave you clues in the pod cast if you took the time to look at SS site.
If there had been a precedent for that mechanism, I would agree. But that is not the precedent they have established. Viking how can you defend a 3.00am posting of this. I am a very reasonable person but i could never justify that time.
I can defend it real easy they put it up at the best time for everyone as has been said they are an American Company. So should SS meet your specific needs on time? Are you that special?
So becauce its an American based company the rest of us should be penalised.
Not penalised but you have to understand that the times they go up will fit more within the US time zones.

*sigh* Yes, you have discovered our secret - we are corporate b****rds who just like to torture our fanbase - we'll stop the cover-up charade as of now - no more contests just for the fun of it because we're in a good mood - and don't worry, we'll stop bothering you here on the boards too - your message has been received.

Seriously, I agree that this will be a great marketing tool. Look at the buzz it's generated here and at SF. People complained before about huge edition sizes and laughed at the "collectible" tag. Well, they instantly redeemed that reputation with this stunt. And it is a "stunt" but in a good way.
Aside from the time the newsletter went up, it couldn't have been more fair. And what time would be fair to every single collector on earth and be administratable for SSC? I understand that non-US collectors are put out by it, but that is the nature of the hobby - not everyone will be able to get one.
