View Full Version : General Washington in the house

11:07 am: Dogs bark; Washington has been delivered to my door. The only difference from the prototype is that his eyes are brown, not blue. I wonder if it's a historical correction. Did they find an obscure diary that mentioned his eye color?
Paint apps worriers take note: this is an absolutely beautiful paint job. Overall, a most impressive figure. Top notch. Wow.
Box has a foil sticker proclaiming this the Sideshow Exclusive figure.
Fedex didn't destroy it.

I just looked again at the newer prototype pics on the Sideshow site, and they have the brown eyes. I must say though, the photos, especially the portrait, are a huge disservice the the figure. You'd never guess how impressive it is. A great paint job on a very fine sculpt.
Whoever Tim Miller of Bad Egg Studios is, he's made a fine addition to Sideshow's catalog. Hope we'll see more from him.

Your exhuberence certainly has my pulse speeding up. So glad to hear that the necessary care has been taken with this outstanding rendition of the general. I hope the regulars are as good as the exclusives, that's the one I'll have to settle for.
Strange how some figures disappear from the site every now and then. Went looking for regular George and couldnt see him alongside the exclusive, but type in the search and there they are. Sweet.

Fortunately Erin is on the case at SS, she was more than friendly and I am sure she will get to the bottom of this. Thanks again for the great customer care Sideshow.

HI
I,ve been waiting for this figure since Moby ^^^^ was a minow. Hopefully it will arrive Saturday, since I live in Maryland. Is the quality as good as the Blackbeard figure? It seems Side Show went the extra mile on that one. If there are any photos available please post.
Thanks,

Love Washington and the sword solution is very creative. They have just a hilt that you can put in the scabbard so it looks like the sword is in there, plus there's the full sword and the extra ceremonial sword. Love the sliding telescope too. He's every bit as detailed as Blackbeard, although Pirates will always be cooler than Presidents.

Hey Bear, Congrats on the figure. Could you do me a favor and check the top of the headsculpt and see if there is a mold line running basically from ear to ear? I've seen pics of others received and one showed this nit-pick. Since he'll be wearing the hat 99.9% of the time, it's not biggie.

As you might guess, there is a molding seam there. However, the one in your picture seems to have been roughed up or badly joined. Mine isn't obvious unless you look for it. I wonder if the hat will eventually wear the paint down.
My only word of warning on this one is that the dawgone twisty-tie under the arms was used here, and you'll be loosening some of the tack-down stitching to get it out. On this particular figure's wardrobe, I'd have been happy to leave things tacked down. The twisty-tie criss-crosses under his pony tail, slips under his vest...oh, Michael Crawford's gonna let 'em hear it!
Other than that, no complaints. Interesting though, he has one (molded) spur. I never knew they wore one spur in that era. Hmmm.
Edit 1-13-06: There were two spurs. They're not molded on; they're detachable with real straps. One came off when I took him out of the box and I failed to notice. Found it this morning. The other one fits so snugly I thought it had been molded as part of the boot.

They must put the twisty on, then the clothes, twist it into the box and then stitch up and snap the clothes. They have to know how incredibly frustrating it is. Just sticking it to the imperialist running dogs I guess.

Just got mine yesterday and I haven't tried to take him out of the box. I am waiting for my acrylic case to be made. I am dreading the hated and dastardly twisties. Why not just have a slip form over the figure so you can take him in and out?
By the way he does look fabulous.

Mine should be here today...
They should take a page out of Medicom's book or even Drastic Plastic (remember them?) and put a tray over the bubble that holds everything in place. I can't wait to see the packaging for LOTR and SW. I imagine the coolness of it will help offset the pain of the price increase.

Hi all,
Just received the Washington figure. Great job on all aspects! Just a few observations; BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN REMOVING THE PARTIAL SWORD! IT IS VERY DELICATE.Also Old George seems to have faired better than his troops at the dinner table. Suprise!! a fat suite. The head scalped is PERFECT.
Now to the infamous dreaded twisty around the body. The good news is that it isn't as difficult to remove as on previous figures. Unsnap the vest and push the twisty out around the neck area.
Now all we need is a British General. I'd like to see a British foot soldier with the tall headgear(I don't know Rev. War jargin).
Oh yea, one more thing, Side Show also enclosed a second Chistmas with the order. A DVD of new products, figure from the Outter Limmits, two rubber wrist bans and a great keychain.
Take care,
:banana Brent :banana :banana

got mine today -- face sculpt is fantastic, and the paint ops really seem to be top notch -- loads of detail (wrinkles and such) still visible on the face -- plenty of detail in the hair. only hint of discord was that the paint around gw's pony tail has cracked above the ribbon, which is no huge deal i guess (anyone else experience this?)
outfit is nice -- wish the shirt ruffle on mine held up a bit better -- seems to be off-center and a bit too far down, but i guess i can play a bit with it... and the sleeves on the jacket seem a bit tight, but i can still pose him pretty well.
quite happy with him overall -- looks great on the shelf!!! love the expression more every time i look at him.
oh yeah, the sleeve says he comes with 2 maps --mine only had 1 -- did y'all's have 2?

Hm. Mine came (unadorned with 2nd X-mas keychains or DVDs), and I think he's superb. Did someone say something about only getting one spur? Mine has two. But only one map as well, yeah, I noticed that. Doesn;t really bother me, as he can't hold everything he comes with now, anyway.
I shant be removing the partial sword from the scabbard ever, methinks. A great idea, well executed. I don't mind the partial shirt thing here, as it was clearly done to improve the look of the figure, not just as a cost cutting measure. My only problem was with the rather shapeless and bulky (though well-made) cape. It envelopes him so much that naught but his head and feet can be seen! I added some wire to the bottom hem to give it some shape, but it doesn't have the same sort of hemwork as, say, Red Death, so the wire just sort of floats around in the cape. Oh well.
You know, G.W. was 6' 4" (my height), and if I had a gut like that, well, let's say I think his horse must've had a rough time of it.
He's posed with the spyglass (very cool) in one hand and the exclusive green-hilted sword (eh) in the other. The regular sword is laid at his feet on top of the one map. Classy. Very classy, indeed. Bring on John Adams, dammit!
I was going to sell him to help pay for the coming LOTR and SW push, but I've changed my mind. I'm to big a Rev. War fan to give him up!
I do wonder why they changed his eyes from blue to brown though. Anyone seen a painting of him lately and can tell us what color they are supposed to be?

I got mine yesterday and was quite pleased. The paint on the head sculpt is very good and I love the outfit. But I noticed something strange, when I pulled the inner box out of the outer shipping box, mine had been already opened. I then noticed that the tape securing the twisty tie to the cardboard had been ripped off previously. but I didn't have any problems with the figure.
But now I have a problem, I took him completely out and assembled him only to find soon after that he was missing a star on his right shoulder board. It didn't fall off and isn't in the package. So I'll now have to send him back for a replacement.
I'd like to know from anyone who has returned a figure, since the exclusive is sold out, will Sideshow replace the whole package with a exclusive or will they substitute a regular version of the figure in the same package? Also will they accept it since it was completely removed from the box?
I've never had to send get a replacement so I don't know how this goes. I hate to deal with this now because I'm in the middle of a move, but it hast to be done because of the 30 day limit.

I don't think you will have a problem Screamingmetal. I would email Sideshow first, and let them know of the problem and see how they want to handle it. If it is satisfactory to you they may just ask you to post back the jacket and send you a replacement. Once they know what the deal is, I wouldn't think the 30 day time limit would be negated. I guess they'll let you know if that is the case.
The only problem I have ever had was my SDCC Angel's pants fly wouldn't do up, as I am not good at sewing, and their service is so good, they sent me another pair, after which I returned the faulty item. They did ask for a pic of the problem, but I didn't have a camera. It was so much more convenient than sending and repacking a large article. Maybe they did it that way because it was an international transaction. Don't worry your be jake mate.

He has excellent paint ops and the facial sculpt is spot on! Costuming is fantastic and love the telescope. Green sword is perfectly done. One map and 2 spurs! Only complaint is that the regular sword was poorly cut and is slightly off, but I'll let it go. My box is double sealed, it may be because the exclusive and regular share the same box. Love this figure! Goes with my Lincoln and the 2 revolutionary figures. It is too bad that sideshow's military line is stalled, but the competition out there is really fierce.
Anybody know where I can get a 1/6 boat? What other figures would I need to get to do a diaroma of his Valley Forge /Delaware crossing? Fun!
Customikey
01-15-2006, 03:50 PM
I was thinking about the crossing, actually. Not sure where to get the boat, but I'd want to get a few more American Rev. Soldiers, and then put their costumes on other characters, like the WWI soldiers or even face figures like Platoon in order to get variance in the boat. G.W. would look odd riding in the boat with a gaggle of clones.
On that note, has anyone else noticed that the Rev. War American looks exactly like the Nude Male Art S. Buck, only with hair?

:D The revolutionary soldiers all look like George Bush which would be rather ironic and funny. Yeah, I was thinking of other faces in the mix. Wonder if there are carded costumes from other companies for 12" revolutionary soldiers? Probably 5-6 figures would be enough. Boat will be near impossible to find I think.

Earlier, when I brought up the dang twisty-tie, I mentioned being unsure how much I wanted to cut the threads that held the jacket tacked in place for shipment. I've got him displayed now, and found that I did want to free the side of the jacket that the sword is on, so that I could place the blue ribbon better.
My wife looked at him next to Lincoln and said, odd to see them together like that. That's all she said. Like she knew them, just didn't think they hung out. I guess they're pretty lifelike.
As for Screamingmetal's problem and returning an exclusive, I did that with my exclusive Spike because I was unhappy with the paint. Sideshow CC said I must return the whole thing and assured me I'd get an exclusive back. Well, I eventually got an excellent Spike and a pair of the exclusive hands, but that seems to have been a sheer miracle and the box doesn't have the tray for the exclusive version; it has no compartment to hold the extra hands.
If you return that extra sword, my bet is you'll never see one again. If my Washington was missing a star, I'd ask for a star and glue it on myself...or drape him in the cape and forget it. Particularly if you like the paint job you've got.

OH NO!!! At the moment my General Washington is missing in action. :sick The tracking claims he was delivered but can't find him anywhere! Of course the fact he was supposedly felivered after 11:30  doesn't bode too well either. No neighbors seem to have received him and if they did they didn't bring him back.
Now for the really bad part, I called FedEx, they said they'll notify the area FedEx Home on Tuesday and they'll get back to me 24-48 hours after that! :banghead Mine is the exclusive...I hope I get another exclusive...

Yeah, that's what I'm worried about. I currently have him displayed with his cloak on and it works, but I would like to have the option of displaying him without. I was thinking of buying the coat parted out but it's too early for that. Also, the epaulets on mine don't look all that great, they've been cut a little unevenly so I'd like a whole new coat. I'll send an email to SSC and ask them if they can just send me the star which I doubt. If I do end up sending the figure back for a replacement, it will be sans exclusive sword no matter what they say. I just won't chance it. They can send me back a whole regular version that has been checked out to not be missing any stars or has crappy epaulets and I'd be happy.
I also removed the stitching holding the coat down and he looks better then he did strait out of the box (I did this just before I noticed he's missing a star). Mine was stitched up with his jacket fitting crocked so I had to do it.

I've had similar problems with FedEx in the past. Did you call your local branch... the location where you have to pick stuff up in person? A few times, I've had them mark a package as delievered only to find it was actually waiting at the pick-up station. The website didn't have information for me, I had to actually speak with a local representative.
This one in a long line of problems I've has with FedEx but I have to admit UPS and DHL are no better.
Keep investigating. I really hope it shows up.

Sorry for the double post....I was just wondering, what do you guys think of the "fat suit"? It just seems a little too fat for my tastes, maybe because I'm used to picturing the soldiers starving and freezing in Valley Forge...maybe it was just because washington was eating all the food! :wacky
Most importantly, how are you displaying it? I found that putting the stand around his waist pushes the sides in making the stomach bulge horribly. I finally settled on putting the stand up the back of his jacket and vest, which unfotunately causes the jacket to bulge in the back.
P.S. On a relatively unrelated note...I visited the Hall of Presidents at Disney World yesterday...they need to hire some sideshow sculptors.
P.P.S When Sideshow makes the line of Presidents, I want Andrew Jackson to have a pistol.

I don't mind the fat suit at all - he looks like a slightly pudgy 60 year old man. Ignoring the fact that the conditions of Valley Forge were greatly exaggerated over the years, George was never starving during his life.
I don't use stands to display any figure unless I absolutely have to, and with George it looks like he'll remain standing on his own without it. In other words, I haven't tried to use the stand.

LOL Well sounds like Georgie was a bit pudgy. The fat suit still looks a little weird to me...maybe I'm just not used to chubby actio *ahem* collectibles. Or maybe it just that Washington looks thin in paintings, but then...when the president says, "Take off about twenty pounds" you don't say no. The body "fat" seems ideal for a Benjamin Franklin. Of course we'd need ALOT more for Howard Taft. :naughty

The fat suit is too big. I was amazed when I opened the box. It's like an entirely different figure then the one pictured on the SSC sight. Washington wasn't ever terribly overweight even long after his tenure as commander of the armies. He was nearly always described as a striking figure. The fat suit is wonderfully stupid on this figure. Sculpt is very nice though.

That's a shame. It's too bad that the gun and the sword are more popular than the parchment and the quill. But it makes sense that a hobby revolving around action figures would not be receptive to characters that only fought with their minds.
I guess that rules out Professor X and Jean Grey. :lol

I understand. Recent studies have shown that sarcasm is more addictive than crack, heroin, and cigarettes combined.

That reminds me ... have any of you seen the new crime ****ysis that 20/20 did a few weeks back? They have now determined that prostitutes make more money than drug dealers. Yeah, I know, I know. Hard to believe. But apparently it all comes down to one major advantage that prostitutes have over dealers. Drug dealers have a finite supply of product. Prostitutes can just wash their crack and sell it again ... :lol
What were we talking about again? -----> :monkey3
P.S. I can't believe the censoring program edited out a-n-a-l-y-s-i-s. Sure, it was only there for effect after the final punchline, but sheesh (:google).

I was actually wondering how they made more money, until I got to the punchline and realized I'd heard it before. I guess there's a plus side to being enough of a space cadet that the same joke can work more than once.
