Weathered Kenner droids

So I got tired waiting on Sideshow to make some droids so I decided to take the Kenner/Hasbro droids and spruce them up a bit. I gotta say they werent bad to start but very clean, besides R5D4..I made him dirtier and will post pics later of him. Wow they look great. Sorry for the slow reply. As for the wires. I just stripped some electric cable and used that. You just have to drill some small holes.

Looks easy!! Looks easy!! Oww no much harder than it looks. I sort professional advice, hired an electrician, wrote to the local council. I then had a health and safety inspector come round, had to fill in loads of forms and disclaimers.
Once I had drilled the holes, another man from the council came round and checked the holes were deep enough and complied to EU Standards. I then had to fill some more forms in, take a set of 8x10 colour glossy photographs which had to be sent to George Lucas himself.

Then the electrician came round, ow he was a character, the tails he could tell, any way thats another story. As it was after hours I had to pay the special emergency call out fee to the electrician (Collin was his name, nice chap). So he cut me the four pieces of electrical wire for the legs,drank two cups of tea and went home.

The next day the man from the council was back, with another tall man with a clip board who did not say much. They inspected the wires that the electrician, Collin, nice chap, had cut the night before, only to find the he had cut one 0.4mm to long! So yes you guessed it, I had to call, Collin, the electrician out again to recut some new wire. He stayed even longer this time and eat one of my rather fine cakes and had two cups of tea and talked about his over weight sister a lot. I also noticed he had a mustache which I did not notice when he came round before!

Finally the wires and holes had been approved and I could insert the four wires, I can not tell you how excited I was.
I had purchased all the necessary safety gear, gloves, goggles, hard hat and flame proof boiler suit.

I had also took the added precaution of alerting all the emergency services that I would be inserting the wires at 11.04 am on sunday.

Sunday arrived and my knees where not to steady! But after a large schooner of sherry and a few warming up exercises I was ready.
11.03.... I had disconnected the phone, taped up all the windows and doors. Drew the curtains and sent the cat to stay at my mothers 893 miles away....

11.03 and 58 seconds, gloves on, visor down ear defenders on oxygen mask in place... I began the wire insertion procedure. I left nothing to chance I had done countless dummy runs and been over it in my head thousands of times... There was no margin for error.........

By 13.00 on sunday, the four wires were securely in place. Mission accomplished. It looked fantastic. I then went and had a little lie down for a few minutes before my doctors check up.
He referred me to the specialist, a Dr Forgnose, nice chap, could not understand a word he said, think he was Scottish. He gave me a full examination plus an internal, don't know why he did that! Said I good physical health.

I just had to wait for the man from the council to pop round and sign the job off, fill out another two forms, a questionnaire and make sure I displayed a warning triangle every time i got the droid out.




So in answer to your question Jackpot, yep it very easy.

Please please feel free to ask me any more questions and next time I will try to make it a little more detailed and add pictures.


Incidentally, I have since then been doing evening classes to become an approve R2 D2 wire inserter and inspector. And I am prod to say I have my certificate after the 3 year BTEC course, so if any one wants me to do their R2 D2 then no problem. But please don't ask me to do R5 or R6 units, thats a whole other course and I don't think I am ready for it yet.


Can not wait to see the pics guys.

This 1 isnt quite R2-Q5 cos i went with silver instead of gold/bronze. I used red ink on his eye lenses to make them stand out more.

I tell you what the R2-Q5 took forever to gloss. I started doing it yesterday afternoon, gave it a few coats of black spray, let it dry for a few hours, then started painting it. Since last night and all today ive been glossing it :lol

R5 only took about 2hrs to do, i done it in washes it goes on smooth and easy but you have to do alot of coats.

Yeah i sprayed primed them black. Then i gave em several washes of a mix of brown/gold/black. Then i put em on and gave them a slight touch up again.

Im messing with my droids again their just too dirty :lol

I made em out of polymer clay ages age, I made loads but I can only find one now!!

I used mainly brown and gold, with a smidge of black, they look brown in the picture but their more browny bronze.

I just picked up a few astromechs off of ebay and am going to have a go at re-painting them.

To be honest, I doubt Sideshow could do better than these after they are "weathered" like this. good stuff.

I want to paint one up but I dont know which one to do. I love R5-A2,but I would like to do something different. Wedges R5-D2 is ok but too similar to R5-D4.

Also Dorgmal, a note on your Jawas. If you trim the frills on the end of their sleeves a bit they look much better. IMO the frilly threads are waay too long for the scale.

Make some most prob m8, get some 1/6 german ammo pouches or something and stick em on a bit of leather strapping kinda ting. I repainted mine and the pantywhiff is still there, but i can live with it for now.

Started work on one of my other droids and realized why I make everything look weathered up and old and rusty.... Cos I am pants at painting and have the the shakes LOL

its R3-T2 which escaped from a crew of pirates that were based in Mos Eisley. They used to torture and abuse the little droid for many years. The unit was programmed to both enhance and sabotage hyperdrive systems. R3-T2 was also equipped with an increased memory capacity that made it different from standard R3 units. It is assumed his original clear dome, a striking characteristic of standard R3 units, was replaced by the dome of a standard R2 unit. I really want to do an R3 with a clear dome but have no more droids to use... oh well.

still got to weather it up, but I love tatooine droids.

This is the next one I am working on, but loads of fiddley widdley painting to do on him.
He is R2-A5 he is specifically for my Sandtrooper Squad. icknamed Ayfive, was a white-and-green R2-series astromech droid manufactured by Industrial Automaton.
Ayfive was programmed by the Galactic Empire for combat communications, and was used to acquire targeting data for Imperial starfighter pilots and gunnery systems. Ayfive was assigned to the stormtrooper squads searching for R2-D2 and C-3PO on Tatooine.

I just got my first droid (R2-A6) in the mail today, I must say for about $12 you CANNOT do much better. These Hasbro droids are of good quality. They look like $50.00 figures. I have 3 more (R2, R5 and another A6) coming in the mail and cannot wait to do some painting and weathering.

Like others have said, repainting these guys could be addictive!:D

LOL I wish, I only have one and a half gonks left, all 22 others have been given away but I did sell a couple.As for the Astromechs, I have have eight and I love them all. The only one I am not too keen on is the green R2, I am trying just to focus on ANH. I wish I could get hold of more LOL.
The ultimate droid would be an R3. But thats gonna be tough.

The Hasbro Mouse Droid is a tad large, but still serviceable. I think the biggest issue is its just a hunk of plastic as-is. I think with some paint it would look cool.

Ah i forgot to say i might also gonna extend the handle bar thingys on the saddle as well. I was gonna use some nails or screws for a solid base and then sculpt round them with milliput. I friggin love milliput i used it to make my custom Jason's hockey mask among other things.

As promised some pics of R5-M2. R5-M2 was an astromech droid owned by Shawn Valdez, a Rebel Alliance officer stationed at Echo Base. Though normally programmed to plan sublight tactical courses, R5-M2 was utilized during the Battle of Hoth to plot evacuation routes from the base. I know he's not a Tatooine droid but I like him, and I am sure he will become useful when I get on to Hoth dios.

It was the 1st few layers of red over the white so it was kinda pinkish, he is red now :lol

The actual story behind the pink R2 was that it was done for a little girl named Katie Johnson. Her father started the 501st Garrison that goes and does charity work and stuff. She developed brain cancer and she wanted a pink astromech so someone built her one. LFL and Hasbro made one called R2 KT and the proceeds went to childrens charities.
Unfortunately Katie passed away.

Ive done alot of charity work myself over the years, i used to be in the Sealed knot reenactment society for about 5yrs, and they do it for charity. The Sealed Knot is the biggest re-enactment society in Europe.

If sideshow makes an R2...they will squeeze everybit of life out of that sculpt as possible..so you will see a ton of droids....just like the clones. But I agree, get the hasbro...I would be hardpressed to get a sideshow one now if they came out with it..it would have to have a lightup feature for me to get it to be honest.

I did answer u though, i used a 2mm drill bit. I dont know what type of wire u will use. Best bet is to compare the drill bit size to the exposed part of the wire that will go in the hole. I drilled mine slightly smaller, then tried the wire, then made it a bit bigger til it was tight but went in with a bit of nudging.

Here is my first attempt. No major repaints yet (still waiting for my droids to arrive in the post), but just some space grime weathering on R2-A6. I also added the wires on the bottom of the feet, I think that really makes the figure stand out. Here are a few pictures...

Here is a closeup of the wire. It is some spare audio speaker wire that I had left over. I really like the color so I do not think I am going to paint it. What do you think??

Well, my droids arrived in the post today. I think I am going to do R2-B1. He was the blue and yellow one from Episode 1. Epsiode 1 sucks, but I always thought that droid was cool.

Now I just have to figure out where to start.:D I guess thats the fun part.

Soon..im trying to get started on my next R2 but I cant get into my freakin shop! We had this crazy rain that was like 3 feet deep in the side yard and one of the boards of the floor spiked up and is blocking the door so I cant get in.. lol All my paints are in there and tools (which is why i havent started my diorama yet either) So I am going cat burglar this week and cutting the glass in the window to get in. Once I get the droid done I will post pics. My R4K5

Well, I started my first repaint. I am doing R2-B1 from Episode 1. You want to talk about a "labor of love", these guys are going to take me a while. Here is a VERY rough WIP picture..

I painted a base coat of flat white last night. Today I am working on the yellow details. I just threw some blue on there to see how many coats I am going to have to do to get the right color.

anyways, I sure am enjoying this even though it is tedious.

Nice one and its great to see WIP I love shots like that. Also its great to have a record of what you have done.

While painting mine, other folks have given me advice and help and I have learnt through trial and error.

Tips:
1: if you are gonna do a complete repaint- spray the whole droid in white car primer. very light coats. (this preserves detail and give a great surface to paint on.

2: Mask areas that require sharp edges, either with masking tape or scotch tape. I don't do that as much as I should.

3: a good brush, No.2 with long bristles, that way it holds a good about of paint and you can get long straight lines.

4: what ever paint you use, acrylics or games workshop, water it down and do lots of coats, that way you can get a flat finish.

5: If you are painting the dome, dont forget you can pull all three of its eyes out with a pair of pliers :)
