So... I guess you are not upping the amount of private messages? 100 is too low and a pain in the ***.:(
Yes, I know... too knew to be asking for this.

You can download your received and sent messages as a text file, and save them on your hard drive. Given that, I think 100 is enough.

if 100 is too low you need to get a life away from the computer..

Thank you for a nice and helpful alternative. Some fellow freaks like you answer in a positive way with no bitterness.
However....

I'm going to lower it to 10 for anyone who hasn't been here for 5 years.
I could use more space. 96% full as we speak. I think I emptied it 2 weeks ago. it does get old, especially if you're OCD like me and need to delete messages to make room but are on an iphone or work/public computer.
Edit: But probably once doubled to 200, within a year we'll be asking for 400.

Yep, and then you get 400 and someone wants 30000.

It's a question of database size. Perhaps when I have to add another server it could happen. Or start a tiered, paid membership.

I'd pay too, Dave. Would love to have more PM space. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v54/gruesam/Emoticons/116.gif
i wouldn't pay a dime. I'd rather donate my money to something more significant.

I feel that any type of "Paid membership" will hurt this forum considerably. It will pretty much cut memberships down drastically, regardless of the amount in question, and alienate any new members from joining and quite possibly the void will be filled by another forum(s). I've seen it happen a few times before with other forums that I've frequented in the past. Just my honest opinion.
There are exceptions, of course, but they are few.

i think he means people that pay get bonuses such as higher count PM options... but basic members would still be free with basic options.....

Yea, I'm just talking about the same thing Statue Forum does - you have to pay for privileges such as being able to buy and sell, sigs, higher PMs, etc. But the basic forum is still free.

and you'd probably have the whole new issue of members selling their accounts/privileges. it's pretty common in paid account situations. which is also a good way for an enterprising member to start an online ponzi scheme. just sayin'.

What's so important that you can't delete the bulk of PM's received and save those that you deem warrant it?
Some of you guys, have 100 messages in there ??? thats ridiculous.

I'd adhere to that...works great at SF.

Theres no such thing at SF and their forum is much bigger than here...

I get a lot of PMs and sometimes every day. And I usually don't delete them right away for one reason or another. It's a constant struggle to keep the number below 100 so it doesn't reject.
I just spent 15 minutes going through and deleting... and I still have 50 in there. I choose to not download them onto my HD- I want to be able to just hit Reply.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :lecture

It's definitely more convenient, I agree. It's pretty cool to go back and see who I've done trades, sales, etc., with and where the different pieces originally came from. It's my own private "feedback" page.

Shrug
It's free. No point in complaining about what you get for free. Just how I see it. If it was 25 or 50 or 75, I'd just make due.
It would be nice though if you do a lot of commerce to have a bit more space, but I guess email can work just as good too.
I will say this though, as a suggestion, if it was me, and it's not, but if it was me, I'd consider raising the limit for known public customizers and dealers. Maybe 150 or 175. It would probably help to keep some commerce issues from bleeding out into the public that might be best left private. I wouldn't chalk it up to adding a benefit just for dealers but helping to keep harmony in the forums over certain commerce conflicts.
Gekko
The only thing it would change, would be taking up more database space while the PM box fills up and spills over into the forums. If an artist isn't answering PMs, adding to the total number will only delay the inevitable. :(

^ That's true, and a good point. But with a bump, they also can't use it as an excuse or to strategically set up their PM boxes so that they don't have to answers people's questions.
It's one thing to not get it with a full box and not give an answer
It's another to get it and just not read it or read it and decide not to answer.
Gekko
I think an artist should keep their own tally anyway vs. relying on a PM box here. Yes, it's convenient, but could also be a nightmare. God forbid some horrible worm trounces through the forums and data is lost (highly unlikely but possible), or for some odd reason the artist gets banned, the artist still has hard copies of what they owe project-wise, and to whom. Keeping PMs limited also helps Dave by getting the bigger, questionable, custom projects off the board. It's really as easy as generating an Excel workbook with a sheet for each custom.

I am all for that Dave. All the basics would still be free, and people who want more PM space, or place to sell, etc. would pay an optional tiered fee. SF does this on the Buying/Selling end, and I think this is fine. You have a ton of expenses and many hours of love labour that goes into what you do, with rarely a pat on the back. It takes a lot of dedication and heart to do what you have started here.
Please introduce a tiered pay. I would love more PM space, and yes would even think of unlimited as an option.
Keep the 100 for free, maybe even the buy/sell (I am not sure on this, honestly I could go either way, would not bother me).
