Notice how they specifically do not say 'PERS' for the eyes, i wonder if it will be a different mechanism than the DX figures.

Also it says 'Bendable Figure body' I don't believe there is an actual body under the space suit. They are calling the space suit itself a 'new body' :monkey1

i think someone pointed out that there was a dial at the back of the head that allows side-to-side eye movement. for PERS u have much more eye articulation than that.

this looks like a real winner. the only thing i'm not so hot about is the seam on the helmet. i know it's to allow the giant head to fit inside, but it kinda spoils the design aesthetics.

in any case i'm still on the fence for this figure. i think it's excellent and i loved the movie. but have really overspent recently and need to be more disciplined.

Hot Toys packaging is never less than spectacular and I look forward to the first shots of the packaging every bit as much as those of the figures themselves.Ca nt WAIT to see what they done for the T-800 and Iron Man 2.It s the same school of thought as Major Matt Mason and Ideals Captain Action my favourite packaging of all-time.

I have to say that the packaging is brilliant in design - the retro feel is great- someone said Major Matt Mason - and that's a perfect analogy.

I also don't think the paint is too vibrant - the color on the movie characters was about the same it seems.

Wow, window boxes? Is this a first for Hot Toys? Certainly haven't had windows in any of the other Movie Masterpiece line, have they (without a sleeve or flap cover)? Those don't make the figures look like they are as good as the price tag, do they?

After I took it out it impressed me as a rather expensive novelty figure. The main body including tanks and breathing apparatus is a hard plastic with the tubes being hard, yet flexible. The arms and legs are a hard plastic at the ball joints, with a soft rubber sleeve to ankles and wrists. The elbows and knees have a ratcheted motion and use the usual ball jointed ankle, to hard plastic feet and soft plastic hands. Three sets all up. The fingers are flexible and aren't wired. You get a spare set of wrist ball joints. The gun is nicely painted.

Then we come to the head, and I had alot of fun just sitting there flicking its eyes from side to side. It's just ludicrous and made me laugh quite a few times. The jaw opens and the tongue can be pulled down, to where you can see it, and also moved from side to side. The head and neck are fixed, so it can only move at the base of the neck, which happens to be between the shoulders, meaning you only get slight forward tilting from it. There is no horizontal rotation. The visor is two piece, super clear and shiney plastic, and can be raised, according to the pics on the side of the box. At the moment I'm having a difficult time just getting the two lugs, of the helmet, positioned into their corresponding apertures. Only the front lug is fitting in on mine. The helmet has to be raised in order to allow the front section to move forward and up on its hinge. For what purpose is unknown to me, because the visor isn't able to stay open on its own.

It's a great little Martian. Hot toys, I feel, could have easily made the head have some rotation. There's not much room for movement inside the helmet. Even so, without the helmet it would be nice to have been able to give these some more character poses. At least they avoided problems with a loose upper neck joint, considering the enormity of it's bonce.

I only just got it and already I'm having fun.

They're small enough to invade anyone's space, and fit in.

Cheers for the low down Creech. It is surprising that the head can't turn, especially as it doesn't seem to have any conection to the articulated jaws or eyes.
But it still looks like a funny figure for the shelf, can't wait to see them in person.

creecher
01-21-2010, 05:12 AM
Yeah, thanks for pointing that out wookster.

I went back and had another prod at it and it's on a ball joint in between the shoulders, so there's 360 degree rotation. :duh What a duffus. While I was doing that the tongue fell out. It's just a ball that fits into a hole at the top of the neck stem. I'm having more fun than I thought. I tell you what, that ball joint is stiff. Can't help laughing at them eyes. They ought to have a mechanical device in there to do it. It just makes them so much more real when you flick that switch.

Well that wiped out some of what I said earlier, and makes this little guy a little winner in my book.

Well he's a winner to me.

The paint is overly brilliant, as compared to the movie, where the colours are more pastel and rainbow like, across their brows. At least if that bothers you you can have it repainted, which you shouldn't have to for the price, but I'm happy enough as it is.

The rubber sleeves and legs have a ridged pattern, where I see dust and dirt collecting, and it being harder to remove. I think they might be hard to maintain, so the discolouration of the rubber components may not match that of the body, over time. Wash your hands and wear your white gloves.

The eye mechanism has a little slackness between individual eyeball movements. You can see it when you operate the switch, but on rest it doesn't seem to interfere with the look. The switch itself needs some loosening up, and on mine, doesn't want to move all the way to one side, although a little force helps. It sticks when it's all the way to the left or right.

I can see the stop motion guys having a ball with these.

Darren Carnall
01-22-2010, 05:00 PM
i use various mixes of acrylics. Mostly the model ones that come in tiny glass jars, but occasional artists ones in tubes too. watered down or thinned with 'flow enhancer'. Also dry brushing, and washes wiped around and dabbed with my fingers to get whatever effects I'm after. (and I do this on my human faces too, all of them)

I agree completely, I'm sure people will make them look even better with a repaint, but they don't need it. Just very funny figures to mess with, they get a lot of comments from people who don't usually even notice my figures a bit like the Enterbay Bean did.

But I warn you, when handling the Ambassador there is a little 'glitter' transference from his robes, nothing major, but worth being aware off. My wife gave me a funny look yesterday as I had red glitter on forehead, I assured her it wasn't a Valentine gesture, but merely that I had been handling my Martian Ambassador... and no that is NOT a euphemism!

Well in that case I'm not going to ask anything about his helmet being too big.

I guess not many people picked these up, not many pictures were posted.

There are 2 or 3 threads around the forum so the pics are spread out a bit, I think I posted mine in the Ambassador thread.

Here's a couple anyway.

Just wanna say that not only the rubber is a weak link the laser gun as well. Specialy the topend is very fragil. It is thin plastic, do not even brush it, it will bend and fall off...:(

Here the oldschool version of the embassador. Which came out by the time hte movie was int he theaters:

The backpack was keeping batteries. If you push the button the head lights up and you can hear "ack ack ackackack ack aaack" and other lines :D

I think the could has easely done this in the new figure. The new tech would make this happen so simple.

I didn't even know these existed I am sorta new to collecting and after looking at current prices I am a bit discouraged but would still like to pick up a soldier. If anyone has any pointers were to pick one up for under 200$ (I know that's asking allot LOL) I would be grateful.

Yeah it is evil, but you have to get used to it. The after market prices are deep shiiiit. Do not pay them, at any circumstances...

I paid one year ago ~85bucks new.

Your a funny person. Hot Toys would never do that to us. But like the other person said I also did not know they made them.
