I think Sideshow should have gave us special packaging for this release, like Vader sitting in his tie advanced with the window on the box similar to the glass front on his ship.

Cool idea but probably another exspense that would have increased the price.

I'm just happy Vader is finally here and ready to ship!

Thanks for posting Lawrence! Any thoughts/review on your figure? Are the joints tight, paint work clean, etc?

Joints are tight unlike the recent Stormtrooper, very clean paint work, the material used for the cape is thin unlike Hottoys Original batman which is too thick. Helmet and armor has no visible scratches and it is quite glossy.

Sideshow really outdo themselves this time.

Got mine yesterday. My local distributor for SSC, people at SimplyToys were kind enough to send the order to my home.

The joints are tight and I am really please that the helmet is rotatable. I thought Vader is great as a stand alone figure. However, he doesn't fit in well with the rest of the 1/6th scale collection. The Stormtrooper's height could barely reach his shoulders... he is way too tall, an inch shorter would have been great.

I think to be scaled properly he should be about 1 inch taller than a Stormtrooper. But if its between a smidge to tall or to short I'd prefer too tall.

I am a much happier person after seeing this screen shot.:D

MaulFan
07-02-2009, 01:59 PM
Yes, Vader is roughly 1/4 inch too tall, minimal in the end, and like others have said, better to be on the too tall side than shorter. I'm sure Vader will stand out more too because he's probably the best scale to other figure heights being on a custom body where we're used to other figures only having a slight difference in height amongst each other. Most of the entire Sideshow Star Wars line is the same height with Lukes and the females being smaller, but now we've got Vader seeming out of place because we're not used to such a range. Like I said, he's a smidge too tall, but it's more the dramatic contrast we're not used to seeing that makes him feel too big than his actual height.

MaulFan
07-02-2009, 02:00 PM
I actually really like that he is MASSIVE. I just hope they are all that way. Not just ANH.

Should be, I don't imagine them using a different body for the others, and even if there are changes to the dome on future figures, it won't be change that add or take away height to him.

Puay
07-02-2009, 02:01 PM
I think to be scaled properly he should be about 1 inch taller than a Stormtrooper. But if its between a smidge to tall or to short I'd prefer too tall.

I think many fans would love to pose him in the duel with Old Ben. Vader is so massive that Old Ben seems... strung.:(

this is how i plan to display Vader....in a duel with old ben.

One point I did like to highlight. I had previously displayed Old Ben holding the Light Saber with both hands on a stand with a smaller base(not the standard Sideshow stand) when the figure could easily be toppled, the Light Saber broke. Do take extra care when you do this pose for Vader, I could see that happening too. :)

From what I see and read, nothing, I was worried for folks that'd I'd be boisting the tight joints and find out that it was my sample that had them and the shipped figures wouldn't but even that sounds to have been the same.

So, the only difference I can spot is I had mine in hand a month earlier.

Thanks for sharing, he looks amazing! Lord Vader definitely needs some ironing though...NOOOOOOOOOO way he'd walk around with a cape like that! :lol

Thanks. His cape really needs to be steamed or ironed. Not sure which would be best.

That's one downside to Vaders and Batmans and such, or even some largely robed characters, there's no real good way to box the capes and such without some wrinkling happening.

Got my Exclusive this morning. Well, he sure is big. I think he's actually too big! Most characters eyes come to his chin in the movies, but even the tops of Trooper helmets only come to the figure's shoulder. He's supposed to be taller than most, but I can't help but picture the WWE wrestler Big Show under the costume. And the forearms are too long like the Snow Bunny Padme, and the gloves look like oven mitts.

Other than that, he's cool. He was going to be the deciding factor in whether or not I continue my Star Wars line, but I think I will actually be discontinuing it as of now. Long wait just to decide to terminate that line in my collection. It takes up too much space, costs too much to keep up with, and will never end with all the character they can do. Bye bye, Star Wars Exclusives. Hello eBay! Want some rare Exclusives, find them on eBay from SilentSurfer this coming week, including Vader Ex, here.

Glad I waited to sell my Medicom Jedi Vader. That will now be my only Star Wars representation. Pound for pound I think it's a better figure. The only problem was the scale issue, but with nothing else in the line, it won't matter.

It comes with the chain.

Correct. I won't speak on someone else's behalf since the capes may vary in the chain and all, but my experience with the cape on mine, you can achieve that look, but it's a TIGHT pinch against the mask and doesn't really look right either, and for 90% of ANH you didn't see it so it's ok that it's best left under the mask. I was too concerned that the chain would rub against and subsequently scratch the mask to have it out.

Just guessing, but I think fenixfox probably worked to get the chain out and visible like that and had it snug against the mask.

It's up to each collector what you want to do, I'm sure some will cut the chain and add their own so it shows, me personally, I prefer the safe, more film accurrate look for ANH by keeping it tucked away under his mask, matches the film and keeps the mask in good condition.

just got a chance to open up my Vader...no words can come close to describe just how awesome he is, he just to the top spot of favorite figure in my collection even beating the Hot Toys Mark III. everything is just perfect in my eyes no flaws whatsoever. last year at SDCC seeing him in person i was just excited that we were finally getting him, but now having him in hand i just cant stop smiling. but now the tough part begins on where to place him in my collection...next to Anakin or with the rest of the episode IV crew, oh decisions decisions

Looks awesome, since I saw this at CC last year I've been hoping the tunic would go under the armor as I wanted to pose him ESB style (although there are other differences), ANH I have covered by the PF. As is, I came within 50 yards of my Vader today; I had it sent to work, which was closed and called off UPS. I tried the after hours will-call at the main office; however, they "couldn't let me have the package until an delivery attempt has been made", isn't bureaucracy great, (sigh) just have to wait till monday.

He does have a lot of valid criticisms, and it sounds like he received a factory dud with all the blemishes (no reason to think a lot of them are flawed). But I agree with the score. For the points he made, it sounds like it should be a C or thereabouts. Poor scoring IMO.

Plus it seems as though the responsible thing would've been to wait until the replacement arrived to give his final score.

How invisible do you want the support to be. I'm not sure where you'd find one, but you could use like a clear plastic box that's like 2 inches high give or take to stand Antilles on.

Basically, support under Antilles is what you need, no figure arm is strong enough to support the weight of another figure, so if he's standing on something to support his weight, you'll be set.

How pliable is his dome? Will the boil and shape trick work like people did to the stormtrooper's armor?

Not really, I think if you tried to widen it, the overall shape would be changed and not for the better. The Stormtrooper was about reshaping the armor, but it doesn't require extra material to take that shape, just a bend, but with Vader's dome, you'd need more material, to stretch it almost like silly putty, not just reshape.

Run a small metal rod up his back, into his suit and across the length of his arm?

Thats what I was thinking. Clear boxes, as MaulFan suggested, would be a bit more visual than I have in mind... What gauge wire should I use and should I anchor it to the body?

You, know, in that shot his forearm actually does look properly long, doesn't it.

I think Dave's photo makes the height differences seem a bit greater than it really is.

This shot was taken from like 4 feet away so there's no camera distortion, the top of Leis' head almost comes to halfway up Vader's chest armor.

http://www.swmmedia.com/SIDESHOW/STARWARS/ANHVADER/44.jpg

Yes he's taller than the film photo, but not as much, as I've said before, I'd say Vader's about 1/4 inch taller compared to other SSC Star Wars figures, than Prowse in the costume was to the characters on screen.

Plus Vader should be pointing at Leia's nose - not her chin as in Dave's photo - which adds to the height illusion.

I know it's not Praji in the photo, I'm saying in my photo, Leia compared to Praji as figures matches very well to how Carrie Fisher lines up with the officer in the movie photo. Vader's tall, but Leia is fine compared to other figures.

Great review and pics Dave! I too am an "old fart" with a similar Star Wars history. Not to sound overly dramatic, but Star Wars has been a big part of my life since '77. I had other interest before then (Planet of the Apes, Star Trek, James Bond, etc) but none that consumed my young mind quite like Star Wars. I've been an avid fan and collector ever since and this Vader is like a dream come true to me. I too had (and still have) the Kenner 12" Vader...man have we come a long way since then!

Depending on your shelving, you could do it like magicians do and have a clear horizontal rod supporting Antilles attached to the background wall that would disappear when looking at him head on. A clear box hes standing on would be the easiest, though.

I'm racking my brain now on how I want him set up. With other Anakin figures? With Obi-Wan? With Stormie? This is why I like 1/6 scale as opposed to Premium Formats. Options on displays.

Leia does look about perfect to the Officer and Stormies. I'm sure vader's height can be adjusted -- if you really want to -- by simply bending the knees slightly to bring him down a tad, OR for the more experienced customizer you could probably cut his leg-pegs a bit so his shins slide deeper down into his boots. There's no articulation anyway so it works much the same way the HT Sparrow would... unless there really is feet inside those boots then I guess a cut-and-reglue situation in needed.

I personally am hoping to bring his head forward more -- if at all possible -- to close the gap between shoulders and dome and also lower him that little bit. Not certain that will work though given the neck plug design.

Best of luck, but I pretty much had the mask as flush to the shoulders as possible in my photos, it's pretty much right up against the shoulder armor.

I know, wishful thinking I'm sure. But I need to take a good look at the neck adaptor to see... there might be a way to adjust it with some surgery. Maybe. If not, I have one more trick idea up my sleeve which might solve the dome to shoulder gap. Again, maybe.

Any idea if the legs have "feet" or could one shave down the shin to adjust height?

I don't think feet, I imagine they're like Hot Toys. As far as shaving, the knee joint is right at the opening of the boot, any lowering of the leg further into the boot will kill the knee articulation.

Ah, OK, good to know. That was the problem with Sparrow as well -- can only lower him so far before you sacrifice articulation for height.

Truly the best option is just bending the knees a bit. It's simple, it works, and the robes hide the cheat.

MaulFan

That, or if you use the display stand, you can probably spread his legs wider to achive it too and be well hidden by the cape.

I've seen some customizers that will chop out a section of a figures thigh to adjust the height. If done in the center the piece can be dremmeled out, reglued and no one need be the wiser.

My only concern would be potentially throwing of the proportions. Sideshow seems to have done a nice job with getting the body (while huge) to have good internal consistency, I wouldn't want to jack that up.

Dave, good review!

Curious about that funny Hasbro dome shot you took -- does that dome actually work as a possible substitute?

To actually try and get it to work you'd have to cut off the pin in the Hasbro helmet. They both attach by pins, but the placement is different, so it's impossible to get the Hasbro dome to sit right with the pin still in place.

But the Hasbro dome has a lot more problems and is further away from an accurate ANH dome than the SSC one ever could be.

I find the "a little short for a Stormtrooper" comment interesting when the regular office is probably 2-3 inches taller than all the Stormies :lol I wonder if shorter folks were used for Stormies to enhance the appearance of Vader or just coincidence.
