When I compare this picture of the prototype from the side with pictures of Maulfan's figure, I wonder if the main difference between the two helmets is the angle of the dome. The prototype looks as though the helmet is tilted back, kinda like in Darthrazz's modified picture (though not quite as much).

Here are two other pictures of the prototype Vader from the side for comparison purposes. In all the pictures of the protoype Vader, the perspective is slightly different from the pictures that MF has provided, but I do think it is possible that the difference between the helmets may be merely due to the position of the dome on the figure...or maybe I just want to believe that because it can be easily fixed if that is the case :monkey3

Nit picking when it comes to Star Wars will never end ever...hell we all know that when you can buy a shirt that says "Han shot first", i know people had high hopes for this one being pretty canon to the film look so, the nitpicking and comparing to film stills makes sense..some people are more passionate about it then others and actually know the little things others do not but, in retrospect look how much nitpicking goes on in general about the movies alone, nevermind merchandise.

Since the dome came off, he can adjust it and take pics to see if a) it is possible and b) it looks good.

Have a few minutes before I step out again, so here's a quick response.

A) Not without serious customization, B) not without serious customization.

In order to change how the dome lays on the head, you'd have to

1) Trim away/off the peg inside the dome that goes into the head
2) Sand or some other way smooth out the glue spot on his nose area of the mask so when you move the dome what's showing doesn't look like crap
3) Possibly repaint the mask after you smooth out the glue to make it all blend right.
4) Find a way to keep the dome in place.

Might be a tad anoying to set the angle with that glue mark in the way..wonder if it can be removed easily, without damaging the surface.

zeiss
06-20-2009, 05:29 AM
If the dome is high enough so that the area with glue is showing, it will look like crap anyway, glue or no glue. It will be too high. Not only the angle must be changed, but the dome has to lay somewhat lower on the face to look good.

I agree with both, this is the best 12" mass production vader out there and it's a great piece. We should be happy that we even got one this great. If he doesn't meet your expectations simply don't buy it, there are alot more fans that will love to have yours and sideshow didnt produce the piece just for you.

It is sooo pity that there is no chance to swap medicom's head on sideshow Vader. ((( It's too small for him. Pity. I was planing to do it.

Also, I don't really like the cloth of his cloak, it looks cheap and toy-like. Medicom cloak looks more realistic and impressive.

Funny that. Medi only did the ROTJ head. So that's inaccurate and in total, considerably less appealing than Sideshow's with the straight dome (from recent pics, it only needs to be tilted as Hurricane suggested in the beginning). And, from MaulFan's pics, I saw a lining for the cloak that actually looks far superior and considerably more screen accurate than the cut piece of cloth with rusty chain that Medi used. I think, at this point, you guys are pulling a Gollum and fighting the inevitable. :lol

shipping a few weeks shy of a year.

Atcually if you count down from 06/15/09 the day the 18 day notices where sent out that woukld put it at arriving at the warehouse on Thursday 7/01/09
so it could start shipping next Thursdasy or Friday.

I'm pretty sure though they will at least start charging accounts at the end of next week.

I'm guessing with SDCC orders strating to ship on 07/17/09 they are going to want to get all of the Vaders shipped by 07/16/09

06-25-2009, 07:25 PM
Well Vader's armor isn't like a clone or Stormie, it's just one piece really. The chest armor is molded perfectly to the body of the figure, doesn't flop or anything, with the shoulder bells hanging off by a strip of cloth glue to the underside of them and the chest armor.

i called sideshow yesterday to ask them when they'd start charging ( i have a debit card ) and they said the should start around the 5th of July.

Sounds like a little more sturdy figure. Thanks

Has there ever been an explanation as to why Vader had one black tusk in ANH? Was it just a fault of the costume that nobody caught during filming? :huh

MaulFan
06-25-2009, 08:52 PM
I would think they had multiple helmets, so my guess is, it was an error but they shot too much with the error there before anyone picked up on it and just kept moving forward that way for continuity or something like that. It was almost an independent film, so a lot of things were because of budget and all. I even wonder if Vader's tunic was done that way just to avoid putting much work into his armor.

I think it has something to do with the entire helmet he wears being asymmetrical? :dunno :huh

I think it has something to do with the entire helmet he wears being asymmetrical? :dunno :huh

It was probably due to the checkerboard paintjob they had to add to the helmet.

shocktrooper_au

I believe the helmet was painted that way to break up the reflections it was casting and to create contrast on film

According to wilkipedea Star Wars cost 11 mil. to make. It didn't have the budget Lucas wanted, and he just didn't have the time to go back and fix alot of little inconsistencies. He had to let alot slide. So they most likely knew about it( asymetrical mask, tusks, effects, and even continuity issues) His deadline had to be be met.

This Weds would be 18 days for Vader , I would geuss a notice will go out sometime this week plus they start charging cards next Monday for SDCC so
I'm guessing they would want to get a jump on Vader so they don't have even more orders to charge for on top of SDCC next week.

Ankle articulation is what makes figures fall over. Thanks, but I'll keep the regular style boots.

My TDK Batman is posed without a stand and he remains balanced for indefinite periods of time. Feet that are flat on the ground independent of leg position enable a figure to remain stable. Shoe soles that are required to remain perpendicular to the legs at all times cause stability problems in all accounts unless a figure is standing at perfect attention.

:lecture Yep, if the ankle joints are done properly it definitely makes a figure more stable without the need of a stand. The Takara Bats is a good example of this.

Ankle articulation is what makes figures fall over. Thanks, but I'll keep the regular style boots.

Well, my HT batman still stands well without the stand, as long as you align the feets to remain perpendicular. It would have been cool to have vader's boot as such. But yes, the figure is too cool to let it pass :monkey5

Vader doesn't need any ankle movement, he just stands there. Except when Luke wifflebat his ass.

:rotfl:rotfl:rotfl it's like fighting using a platform shoes

Shoe soles that are required to remain perpendicular to the legs at all times cause stability problems in all accounts unless a figure is standing at perfect attention.

For some figures, something like the HT Batman's would be ideal, but would have to be perfect. My TDK Batman has strong ankles but my Begins Batman, from the TDK line, flops at the ankles like a dead fish.

Vader is BIG and HEAVY, the solid build of his boots is what keeps him upright and they do it very well, I've had him go hours and hours standing on his own without issue. I don't think even HT's ankle design or Takara's would support the weight of a figure like Vader.

For what little dynamic posing the legs on this Vader are capable of, I feel the boots are a non-issue and the fact that it can hold the poses it can get into on it's own supports them being done as they are.

Good Deal!!! Wonder if Memnoch was able to get his done too? Man I can't wait for this! I sold my Medicom Vader , Hasbro Sith Lords Pack and gave my
Electronic Vader to my nephew for this! From all of MaulFans great pictures I'd say Sideshows destroys them excpet for too an extent the old Kenner one
from 79' which was my my taste of 1:6 scale figures.

I tried calling yesterday but couldnt get through. Maybe Ill try now.

Well talked to Cathy and she said since they were gonna start charging today she couldn't push mine through. It should charge either today or tomorrow. Wish they would have picked up when I called twice yesterday, I could have had it charged.

I didn't talk to Cathy , but they would have been able to charge yesterday anyhow , they have to allow 24 hours from the time the notice was sent out.

I told the person I spoke with that I was using my Debit card and with it being the first of the month have rent ect.. going through which I really do and asked if they could charge me so they they get their money.

What difference does it make?

The reason I did it was I recently moved and had to change all of my CC mailing addresses as well as the shipping and billing addresses on the Sideshow web site. I've been waiting so long for this one I didn't want to leave anything to chance.... As far as getting mine any earlier then anyone else it shouldn't have any effect. I just wanted to be sure that my ducks were all lined up….

The ones charged today probably will ship sooner since the card has been charged the order moves now to shipping , plus I confirmed that Vader is in the warehouse .
I had mine charged because I use a debit card and wanted to make sure
SS secured the funds with rent , utilities ect going through at the same time.

I'm guessing mine will ship tonight or tomorrow .

Sometime today if not already , The SS website does take a few hours at least to update as far as orders being charged or shipping . Mine hasn't updated to item shipping soon yet altough its been at that status since 1:00 EST after calling them just doesn't show on the website yet.

Just got off the phone with SS. Had to call to have them charge Vader to my debit card as I didn't want to add the cost to my credit card so I would have room for Piett and/or Luke & Han. Cathy stated that they just started charging cards today and that mine should go out in the next 3-5 business days. So, I'm not so sure that calling will really speed up the process.

part of depends on when you call them to charge your account. If it was today you can most likely expect your orer to ship tonight or tomorrow. Everytime I've called to request expedited shipping or they charge my card it goes out within a day or two.

If your card is charged tonight or tomorrow I would expect it to ship by Friday , the 3 - 5 is a standard answer to allow enough time for your order to ship so they can cober themselves if there is a problem in shippig ect...

Most companies do that if you have something ship from them.

I think it depends on who you get when you call and how long you have been a customer and if your nice to them. I have a good repoire with a few CSR's and have been a customer of theres for 4 years and have close to 40 purchases through them.

They have the best customer service dept I have ever dealt with.

I think Sideshow should have gave us special packaging for this release, like Vader sitting in his tie advanced with the window on the box similar to the glass front on his ship.
