I'm not certain I will get the new Vader actually. I do not have it preordered. I have an old Hurricane ESB Vader that holds up pretty well, lights and all. Not sure I need a third. I want some parts, that's all at the moment. But, maybe in-hand pictures will change my mind.

What do you mean, if you rebuy that body you will be unhappy?

I personally love Vader's scale to Luke. Vader would scare the hell out of me if i was luke and had to face him in a fight. His height and presence is perfect 4 me truly scary opponent for luke. I'm realy glad he didnt change his size much if any.

Ah. I didn't know you had a Hurricane. You weren't one of the the ones that waited 4 years, were you?

I owned a KP body when King posted his pics. I thought it looked great , and followed suit like everyone else, but I just didn't like it in hand. The boots made the legs looked squat and the arms a bit stubby. Basically, every time i see a pic I think it looks brilliant and have been persuaded to buy another, but I feel like if I did I'd regret it.

Nope. I actually had it made about a year or so before I joined the boards -- in the dark ages of 2004. It took about 5 months and was Glenn's first official commissioned Vader with the light-up functions. He consequently made a career out of it. It means a lot to me because it was his first (second really because he built the proto for himself).

Hi guys,

I have (finally after waiting to long) a ANH Vader on it's way to me. Very excited about him cause it already has the custom cape with it.

My question, do i need the tunic?

Second, where can i get the right hasbro helmet? Saw an electronic talking vader somewhere, but i know i'm supposed to get the ultimate villain version.

Any help would be appriciated.

I don't know why by i am major in the star wars figs these days. Own a couple, but most my collection is indy although i started out with star wars. This hobby is expensive, but awesome.

Thanks guys and gals,

Best,

Robert

To your first question, the production tunic will likely not match the custom cape, so it won't look as good. Especially in pictures. So I would get a custom tunic as well.

To your second question, the Electronic talking Vader and the Ultimate Villain Vader domes are both from the same mould, so either would work.

TheFiend
01-12-2014, 08:47 AM
Oh, and just so you know (in case you didn't) the KP is shorter than the stock body. In fact, as far as height goes, he may be perfect. It's just some of the ANH armor is big on the body. This bothers me hut may not bother you. Wor-Gar posted a few pics of his in the KP a page or two back.

I can always make a body suit underneath since im a seamstress and very good at body suits and not a stranger of using epoxie. and since ankle extendors for ht work with kaustik plastik then if i need to add height i can.

Groovy34

has anyone done him using the hot toys body from preditor the black guy i forget his name since it doesn't matter skin tone of body

Wor-Gar
01-14-2014, 11:48 AM
Someone tried I believe and had trouble with the Vader chest armor fitting over the HT chest. Also, the biceps/forearms may be problematic for the undersuit. That suit is very tight on the KP02 as it is.

galactiboy
01-14-2014, 01:01 PM
Yeah, there was some problem with the Noland body... I had planned on using that before I settled back on the KP02.

As far as all of the possible bodies to use the KP02 really seems ideal for the ANH Vader mod and I didn't have any issues with the body suit not fitting. Although I am wonder if the boots on the ROTJ would look better than the monstorous ANH ones?

I just swapped my ANH vader over to the kpo3a body. I swapped out the neck connector from the ss stock figure that connected to his head and converted it over to the kpo3awhat a improvement he looks much more accurate with the height issue.

I know that cotsworld collectibles will have some in stock in about a couple of weeks. but I think the kpo3a worked just fine the gloves snapped in with just a little pressure and I swapped out the neck joint connector from the original darth vader ss stock body. and cut out the rubber neck part as it was to thick. I had to cut parts of the sleeves off as they were longer then his arms that part sucked but had to be done.

I would love to see more photos of your Vader, GG. Did Vader's head not fit onto the KP03 neck without cutting some of the rubber material? The neck looks similar to the KP02's so I find that surprising. I've been thinking of picking up that KP03 to see its leaner build will make poseability better on Vader, as well as make the arms look less wonky.

I took them from the new ESB/ROTJ Vader set I received Monday. The body on that turned out to be too tall and it arrived with a broken tusk, so I thought I'd bust out the old Vader and upgrade some of its parts.

Oh, I'm keeping both! I didn't spend $250 on the new Vader just for those few pieces to upgrade my old one. I just put them on just to see how it'd look.

TheFiend
01-16-2014, 08:09 AM
Ok, I was about to say..:lol

Anyway, I'll be selling mine. I don't know if Im going to part it out as pieces or the whole thing. I will be keeping the suit. I made the cape and tunic but they were one of the first ones I made so they're fairly crude but look just hanging on the figure. The body has been modified but it's reversible.

I really love it. Bulky as he's supposed to be!
The cape looks a bit strange...is it because it touches the ground so the weight is not keep him down properly or can be futzed?

It's because the new Vader is not much shorter than the ANH Vader, so the bottom of the cape goes past the feet. It does drape better because it's made of thinner material and isn't lined, but I'm definitely gonna have to find a customized cape for a permanent solution.

That's probably the scariest part. I just slowly pulled using pressure, and wiggled it back and forth slightly. You'll eventually hear the glue crack underneath and you know you're on your way. I kept thinking i was going to break one of the sides of the dome

I've seen somebody ask about this before. Someone from Sideshow said that when you place the order, it estimates the shipping for each individual item on the order, but the final order will be the true shipping cost for the order of multiple figure stands. You might want to call the customer service department and ask them about it on Monday.

Correct. I ordered stands some time back and the shipping price was all funky like that too. One call and it was straightened out.

I don't know if this is the proper forum for this question but... I was comparing my ANH to the ESB Vaders and I just now realized that my ANH has two left feet/boots. I contacted SS about it and they were going to have the returns department contact me in the next few days. What do you think the chances are that they have a replacement part after all of this time?

My boots won't stay attatched at all anymore. The only thing I can think of is when I switched it over to the KP for that short time the ankle hole were smaller and wore down the boot pegs so now they won't fit into the legs. Any idea on what else I can use or modification that will remedy this problem?

An easy fix would be to wrap a layer of masking/painters tape around the peg to thicken it up a bit.

Here's two quick shots of my Vader with my Marmit/SS/HT bashed Stormie.

I picked up the ROTJ cape and cut the clasp from 9 links to 4 links. The material of the Star Wars cape is not that different from the ROTJ cape. He still has the original tunic on. I don't want to use the ROTJ tunic mainly because of the pleats.

Thanks man. That's one thing I love about Darth in Star Wars - he wasn't really refined. Sometimes his clasp showed, sometimes not. Same with his helmet. Sometimes the helmet was over the collar, sometimes not. Hell his dome changed positions from scene to scene. So there's lots of display options.

Yeah Marmits are hard to beat - especially with help from SS and HT parts.

I just missed that Darth auction too. He showed on my search results, I clicked the link and it was already gone. Highlander1 was quick on the draw.

I scored the new ROTJ helmet and thought I’d try it out on the Star Wars Vader. I like the more pronounced flare of the ROTJ dome, but I also like the widow’s peak and overall fit of the Star Wars one. There’s definitely pros and cons about both. It’s also really hard to photograph this guy.

What do you guys think? Any of you guys put the new dome on the old Darth?

I’m feeling the same way…the only thing the new one has going for it is the flare. I know it’s supposed to be from ROTJ, but neither dome seems to be accurate to its movie.

The new ROTJ dome reminds me a lot of their Star Wars PF Vader. That dome was good, but still off. What’s the matter with these people!? Kenner did a fantastic job back in ’79 for their 12” Darth. In 19-freakin-79!!

Why can’t SS digitally scan the important key parts of a figure!? I’ve always been under the impression Marmit did just that. And that was 14 years ago!

It's on my figure in the pictures above and on page 714. I like the new cape a lot. The tailoring is a big improvement. It's made up of multiple pieces and that let's it drape more naturally. I think the original costume was tailored in the same way.

I think that the ANH mask sculpt has a lot to do with this - it's definitely the superior sculpt and when coupled with the Hasbro dome, it's a much better looking helmet than the new SS ROTJ sculpt. (ANH with Hasbro dome on the left, SS ROTJ on the right)

See right there by itself the Hasbro dome looks great as far as the flare. It definitely reminds me of the shot below. I think a lot of Darth's look has to do with how the mask, shoulder armor and cape work together. How the mask sits and is positioned with the rest of the costume.

I also think that the thickness of the leading edges on the Hasbro dome are representative of what was seen on the real ANH dome. Here's some photos of the ACTUAL screen used helmet being worn in the late 70's by Kermit Eller. (Kermit Eller was an employee at Don Post Studios who was chosen by Lucasfilm to wear the screen used costume at public appearances / publicity. It was Kermit Eller in the suit at the Manns Chinese Theater ceremony for the Hollywood walk of fame hand and footprints for C-3PO, R2 and Vader. He was also wearing the costume for the academy awards presentations when John Mollo won the Oscar for best costume design). Tucked underneath the armor. I'm guessing that Kermit Eller's neck wasn't as long as Dave Prowse's or his head wasn't as tall. LOL. Either that or this is the first time he put the costume on and he didn't quite get it on properly.

Yes, I think we all know how the neck of the mask should be sitting on top of the armour. The reason I posted those 3 pics of Kermit Eller wearing the screen used mask is because they show very clearly just how thick the leading edges of the dome were.

Wor-Gar
03-05-2014, 11:54 AM
No, I posted those about the way the helmet hides the brow ridge actually, not the neck (I know that was improper dressing). Seems like alot of people like to show that brow ridge.

That’s cool. I didn’t know it was him at the Manns Chinese Theater thing. I’ve wondered who’s wearing the costume for all those TV appearances. I wonder if that was Kermit with Wolfman Jack – I think on The Midnight Special – and on that awesome episode of the Donny and Marie show?

The Hasbro dome is growing on me more and more. Your picture above is the best I’ve seen it look. The thickness looks great and it does have a nice swoosh and flare. Crazy or not, something in the back of my head though is still saying, “Don’t contaminate your Sideshow Darth with a Hasbro toy piece”.

The plastic SS used is too thin and cut too sharp. Ideally I want a dome that has the thick, gnarly and asymmetrical goodness that made the helmet what we love. The dome and the way it was positioned really gave him that pissed off look that SS just can’t duplicate.

Quick question – why in the world is your nice mask not on the original Star Wars body? Blasphemy my good man.

I agree Alex. I think the Sideshow ANH mask with Hasbro dome works very well on the new ROTJ figure. Here's mine:

Yeah, that looks excellent. I should be receiving lforignos cape/tunic set before this weekend. So I plan to do Alex's body mod this weekend as well.

Hey Alex,

Yes, it was Kermit Eller in the costume in all of those TV appearances that you mentioned. Interestingly, Kermit Eller has worn the costume more times and for much longer than Dave Prowse ever wore it. He can tell you every little bit about the intricacies of the suit - even 30+ years after wearing it.

I may revert back to ANH Vader in the end. I'm just a sucker for the lights on the chestbox and belt. The only reason I put the ANH mask onto the new ROTJ body is because I felt that the ROTJ mask is too small and as I already mentioned, I don't think the sculpt is as accurate as what they did on the ANH mask. I was lucky to score a brand new, unopened electronic talking Hasbro Vader so the dome that I got was mint without any scratches / marks on it. The amount of gloss on the Hasbro plastic looks just right and matches up with the way the ANH dome looks in a lot of scenes so I wasn't fussed about repainting it at all.

I’m thinking of sanding out a bald spot in the top back of the mask. So it would kind of be like the half mask from the costume. Just to help the angle of the dome a bit and lowering the flange some. It’s a last resort and just a thought. Anyone tried this?

If it works then the angle of the dome’s dangle will be inversely proportional to the missing meat of the mask. :lecture

It cost me a small fortune, but i did the switch. My anh chestplate straps broke when pulled off vaders head to use the hasbro dome. I saw the chestpiece on evilbay and took it. Very hapy with it although the lights are not attached. The belt it too big.

Yes, Vader's on the KP02. It's short because, compared to the SSC stock body, it's a bit shorter at 13 1/2". A few guys here have done the same thing, which is what got me to do it in the first place.

Also, those troopers were only put on Sideshow's newer armored Prometheus bodies that I picked up from Toy Anxiety since the ones they originally came with were too floppy to stand on their own. I also reshaped the chest armor in at the sides so they fit better, but I don't think you can tell from that photo.

Oh, those may be the helmets that came with the Han and Luke set (held in place by a rubber knob connected to the neck post). That's why they're on the shiny side.

I received my lforigno set yesterday. Very nice stuff. I can't wait to get started on the body mod now. I'm still waiting for one last piece. I was actually thinking about fixing my ANH Vader up and selling him, but now I don't know so much...
The new Vader is a fine figure no doubt (aside from inaccuracies) but the mask on the ANH is much better, along with the suit. Plus, there is just something about the ANH Vader that I love. I really have to give this some thought. I know some people have been mixing it up with the belt/chest box etc. but I just can't. It doesn't feel right. I think the chest box that came with the first Vader is pretty close to the one in ANH. So if I sell it it will be one complete package, no mixing. One thing is for sure though, after I am done with all my mods one of them HAS to go.
Will give this much thought....

I might shorten gloves. Also, I'd like to get the light-up belt just to try it on ANH. Both belts are inaccurate anyway so it doesn't matter much.

To fend off the next question: ANH should have two smaller round green lights (not rectangular) and a larger red light.

The original suit had two rectangular green pieces on the belt. SS did a pretty accurate job on the original Star Wars belt and chest box.

My bad calling them round, they are square there, smaller but square. But I would not say SS made them accurate to ANH, I think SS made them generic so they could reuse if necessary for ESB/ROTJ.

Let me rephrase "pretty" with "fairly" accurate. :) Stuff like the coin slots and the white/silver belt buckle are a bit big against the black boxes. I guess I'm more forgiving on those parts.

Yeah it seems like there isn't much difference in SS's first or second belt. I don't have the new one though. It would be cool to try out the new belt on the old Darth.

I would love to get one for a decent price. It makes me cry when I see the price asked for the tunic and the new light-up stuff. This was a deal.

Yours looks like mine now, Fiend. We need to fix the bunch-up of the tunic (robes) on the shoulders I think -- mine has the same. I'm thinking of folding the material over -- like in half -- to see if that calms it down; if now I may cut the material, narrowing it where it crosses over the shoulder. Lance said that material cuts very easily without leaving frayed edges. Just use a sharp scissor.

Also, what do you think about shortening the gloves? Some have cut a ring or two off the bottom of the glove. I haven't had the balls to do this yet, but its another thing I'm considering.

Thanks man. I didn't paint the head personally, I had it commissioned by Skiman. I didn't do a body swap, I only padded his body a bit to give him some heft. I love him, he's one of my favorites. Still need the damn robe that came with him though. That will bother me forever until I find it.

Yeah, there is still some fine tuning to do, the robes being one of them. I was thinking of doing the same as you, folding them. I took some pics of the cut up body. I remember looking down on all the cut up parts and thinking ' what have I done.' :lol Before this mod I only took out the lower midsection and put the body back together. It was slightly over 13 1/2" so the height was good, but he was ill proportioned. Bad. Now, I'm very happy with the body.I did the same thing Adam did to his, - I cut a portion out of the midsection, reglued it, cut sections out out of both arm and legs, then reglued those. It took me over 3 hours from stripping the figure to reclothing him.
As far as the gloves, I'm not sure. I planned on shortening them but they don't look bad like I thought they would. Ill give it a few days to let it sink in. Plus, they're accurate as far as I can tell, right? I was looking at props and a few screen grabs and I count 12 big rings with 2 tiny ones on each end. I thought someone posted a screen grab a while ago showing that the SSC gloves were too long though....

Well if 12 is correct, I count 13 on our gloves. Hmmmmm.... tempting. I'm like you, in hand it looks fine, but the gloves are admittedly a tad longish. Depends on the pose. I have his hands at his sides and it looks OK. But put his hands up and the gloves suddenly look almost elbow length -- nice evening gloves, Darth.

I have so many gloves that came with Darth surely cutting down one pair isn't too bad, right? :)

TheFiend

I just counted the rings on the right saber holding hand and it has 12, I counted 13 on the left fist. I didn't count the other hands. The gloves on 501st Legion site have 13. Now, IM only counting the big rings, not the smaller strips on both ends of the rings if that makes sense.

Wor-Gar
03-09-2014, 09:47 PM

just a noobish question guys.. what is the prefferd storage location on figures with lots of leather such as vader here? i live in a place thats humid most of the time..i was planning on placing my figs in a airconditioned room due to humidity at day time but we only open air conditions at night hahaha is it bad to put vader in a room that changes temperature? or should i place him outside where humidity is constant? thanks!

Well, I wouldn't say my house stays exactly the same temperature at all times so I don't think it will be a problem. I wouldn't suggest keeping it in a consistently humid area.

With all the hype surrounding the current SSC release, I had actually pulled the trigger on it...then canceled my order.

I just picked up the ANH version; something about it just speaks to me more and I think it'll look better with my Marmit stormtroopers. When it arrives I'll lower the helmet and get a new cape and tunic set; I don't think the height will bother me that much, but if so that's a mod for the future, not like there isn't a wealth of information in this thread.

I think I made the right call.

I just got my partial ANH Vader yesterday. I'm going to change the body to a KP02, are there any differences on the KP02B and KP02C bodies or are they exactly the same?

It's too bad SS didn't have this when they were designing their vaders. Even the Medi helmet sits better.

Vertically-tiled? I don't understand that chart.

That's because they misspelled "tilted".

You're overthinking, I just look at the pictures. :lol

I would guess he/she means slanted, is that a good english word? I found the picture via google, I have no idea if the person writing has english as a mother tounge. The picture was originally for The Prop Den, I guess many Vader aficionados hang out there.

Here is another picture:

Edit: Thorne is smarter than I am. I didn't even read it as tiled lower down, it says tilt in the fist paragraph. :)

Somewhere in these 723 pages it must have been posted...which Hasbro dome exactly is being used for the ANH Vader mods? I received my ANH Vader and love this piece...lowered the helmet some over the brow and it really improves the look, although I haven't messed with changing the rear angle yet. I'd like to try a Hasbro dome but don't know which model everyone's using...is the "Anakin to Vader", "12 inch Electronic Vader", "Ultimate Villain" ...? Thanks in advance. That's what I get for showing up late to the party.

The 12 inch electronic Vader and the Ultimate Villain Vader are the correct dome.

I don't have any hard facts, but since I just got mine which was a partial set and arrived only with the Hasbro dome I (speed) read the entire thread and the consensus seem to be that all the Hasbro Vaders, electronic, ultimate and Kenobi 2-pack or whatever have the same dome. The one to avoid is the Anakin to Vader since that one has a smaller dome. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

BTW us smarter guys has it set so there are only 181 pages, not that it makes it any easier to locate posts.. :lol

Edit: Too slow on the typing again. :slap

Thanks everyone...I wound up ordering a 12" electronic Vader for the dome, didn't cost much so I'll give it a shot.

I lowered the stock helmet on mine and it looked okay, but after I dremeled out the back ridge on the interior of the helmet...it was like magic. The angle and depth changed and the figure looks really outstanding now. I'm going to try a Hasbro helmet to see if it makes a big difference to my eyes.

At any rate...except for the lack of ankle articulation, I like everything about this model better than the ESB version, due to nostalgia and personal taste, mostly. The ankles aren't a big deal as I really only need him to stand around looming over stormtroopers.

The 12 inch electronic Vader and the Ultimate Villain Vader are the correct dome.

Thanks, I got the 12 inch electronic Vader dome and after short work...wowed again. It was almost a tough call, because when adjusted properly the stock dome actually looks fantastic, but I think the forward view is best served by the Hasbro dome.

I got into 1/6 solely for stormtroopers, but displaying them with ANH Vader really sets it all off.

I'll post photos at some point, I think I'll get a custom cape first to finish it off.

Hi guys,

I have a quick question about the dome mod.

I have an old Hasbro Electronic Vader so that means I have the dome to use for the Sideshow Vader.

I tried just before to pull the Sideshow dome off but it looks like its stuck on there pretty well.

How easy is it meant to be to take the dome off the Sideshow Vader?

Also I have read on here that you have to dremel the prongs that are on the inside of the Hasbro dome so it fits on the Sideshow Vaders head.

I don't have a dremel and I've heard they are pretty expensive. Is there a cheaper alternative I can use to remove the prongs inside the dome and smooth it out like the dremel does?

I'm a bit of a noob with customizing so thought I would ask here as this place seems to be the best on the internet for advice from what I have been told.

Cheers. :)

Well, the Vader helmet isnt MEANT to be easy to take off. Its a supposed to be permanent and Its affixed with glue. What you need to do is take a firm grip of the dome and wiggle or rock back and forth until you hear the glue underneath crack. It may take a little time so be patient.
Good luck. :)

A Dremel or I should say a similar rotary tool that doesn't have the Dremel name on it could be had super cheap under $20 and it's a very handy tool to have.
