For those of you who have modded your Vader helmet, what is the concensus on the positioning peg in the helmet? Are we sanding/cutting it completely out, or are we leaving some of it standing?

If any of you/most of you/all of you are leaving any part of the peg in place, are you still using it to position the helmet, or is the re-positioning such that the peg no longer goes in it's hole?

Also, do you think superglue is overkill? Would some hot-glue do the trick?

Thanks!

i sanded the peg all the way down, you need to sand it off to get the helmet to sit right. and i only used 3 dabs of super glue but im sure you dont need to.

I just picked up this figure today. My first Star Wars 1/6th figure! It looks great in person. I don't think the pictures (although nice) do it justice. I fear I've started yet another 1/6 collection that's really going to hurt my wallet. Storm Troopers are next...

I just did the helmet mod for a couple of friends and they are sooo happy. QuiGonFishing, if you'd like, I can do the Vader Helmet mod for you for free. I've got the right tools. As a matter of fact, I'll do 3 helmet mods for fellow freaks for free (just 3, no more). Why, you may ask? Because I've had a great experience here with people helping me out and I would like to pay it forward. Besides, I'm good at doing this mod and super careful. LMK.

great pics, tyler!

Awesome pics tyler!

thanks for the kind words, guys.

btw, mine is an UNmodded figure. as some forummers have said, all it needs is the right angle to make the dome/helmet look great. i don't plan to do any mods too, out of fear of damaging the beautiful glossy paintwork---which is a major reason why vader looks so darn good.

having said that, those of u who have done the helmet mods, they definitely look sweet, keep up the great work!

Well, if you know what you are doing, there shouldn't be any damage done to the helmet when modding it.
Oh, and I like my Vader to look good from every angle. ;) But, to each his own, if you are happy the way it is, that's awesome. If it's not broken, why fix it, huh? :)

I got rid of all the ribbing inside my dome except for leaving a little of the back one. I did leave most of the peg there. I was going to grind it off, but just kept trying it back on his head to see how it was going. The main part of the peg I left alone, but I did grind off the little part that projects out a bit.

I'm happy with it, it holds it on secure, but I can also put the dome on crooked or wonky if I feel like it. Vader's dome is all over the place in ANH, so however you like it on there, enjoy it.

I asked this question several pages back about how much is actually being removed and I guess no one saw it quick enough before it was gone into the ethos:monkey2

Sooooooo, I would be all in for a brief tutorial or just a pic of the inside of the helmet to see what should stay and what should go:chew

Also, if your dome came with any scratches from the package, you can use Novus fine scratch remover #2. After that Use #1, Clean and Shine and it'll leave Vader's dome like new. That's what I use and it works great:

It is scary putting those boots back on:horror I bent the pegs in both boots the first time, I then had to straighten them out with a screwdriver and once I got them on I realized I put them on the wrong legs!!!! The third time I finally got it, but I won't be taking them off anytime in the near future.

here you go, all the modifications you need to make it perfect

Tutorial for the dome-mod, the chest-mod and the shoulderpadding-mod

1. making sit Chestbox straight
this is what I used for materials, the foam from the box itself :) and some tape that I had left from modelling
http://users.telenet.be/erikoo/Figures/VADER/foam.JPG
http://users.telenet.be/erikoo/Figures/VADER/foam%20chest.JPG

it looks good imo

http://users.telenet.be/erikoo/Figures/VADER/chest1.JPG

2. Padding shoulder armor
here I just took a piece of paper and folded it a few times and again taped it to the bottom of the shoulder amor
http://users.telenet.be/erikoo/Figures/VADER/shoulder.JPG
http://users.telenet.be/erikoo/Figures/VADER/shoulder1.JPG

3. Dome modification
Haven' took picture of this, but when you remove the dome, you will see "ribs" inside of the dome, just dremel those away!
Than you can put it on the head, but before you use the (super)glue know how you prefer it to sit on the head.

and here is the result of it all

Not knocking anyone who did the mod, but this is the reason I've yet to attempt it. While brow and below, it looks great, the top makes the helmet look a tad scrunched.

Yeah, where the dome sits relative to the mask from the factory is really nice I think, anywhere that seems like it needs to be lower, etc., is more a matter of needing more mass in those places, rather than changing location.

You know, depends on how low you position the helmet. I didn't go as low as Riko's mod. It all depends on how Vader looks to you in your head, on how you think it looks good to YOU. Check it out in these pictures:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v260/edidu/DSC01578.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v260/edidu/DSC01575.jpg

However, one of my friends who I helped with the mod, asked me to go low in order to completely cover the brows and get that evil look. Very McQuarrie looking. Sorry, I don't have pictures of that one.

zeiss: Sand paper will be really hard and will take you forever. Exacto knives don't work either since it's really hard plastic. I strongly recommend to buy or borrow a dremel. Sand paper won't let you get into those tight areas and you will also risk scratching the outside of your helmet. A dremel will be more precise. Check out this great customizer's review on the Stylus dremel. I use this dremel and I highly recommend it (bought it at Target):

http://www.angelfire.com/mech/jinsaotome/DremelStylus.html

If you don't want to buy a dremel right now, just send me your Vader's head and I'll do it for you. No charge. I'm in California.

Oh, and I didn't increase the flare of the helmet.

I think you can do most of what needs to be done with needlenose pliers. You may not be able to get it to sit as low as if you had a dremel, but you should be able to lower it a good bit.

i was over at a friend's place and noticed his Vader, much like many of the photos posted here had a very high helmet... mine is not modded yet sits very low... it was quite the difference comparing them in person. i wonder if this hints at a manufacturing issue rather than an intentional decision?

Vader's helmet actually sits quite high, and is longer. Most of the freaks are sacrificing correct height for appropriate length in the lower portion.

I don't know, but there are "ribs" inside of all the domes...so I cannot imagine that all of a sudden they adjusted those ribs inside all of the domes from now on...

Fact is, the dome sits to high to be movie accurate.

It is quite possible. Hasbro makes all kinds of running changes in Transformers when they are in production.

Tough judge for me, as far as quality, I'd say he's my favorite SSC figure of all, but as far as overall appeal, there are other characters that hold more value on an emotional level. Vader'd still be in top 5 in that regard, but I'm not sure I could call him number 1.

Nice picture. I'd rank Vader as one of my favorite all-time 1/6 figures, let alone just Sideshow.

For me, this Vader figure, along with the Utapau Trooper and the Stromtrooper, hit that high level of looking like men in suits instead of...sorry, guys...dolls with good outfits. Sideshow (and their collaborators Hot Toys) have achieved great success with the base bodys in creating looks for these figures that just have the armor and outfits hang well and allow for some great, natural looking posing.
There have been so many amazing shots in here of Vader in a variety of poses, and most of them really show this "realistic" quality off quite well...a job well done, Sideshow!

Fair enough, sometimes I forget about gems like Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi or Luke Skywalker Jedi Kinght as being some of my all time favorites. I also have a fondness for Qui-Gon too. I love that exclusive. But to me Vader is the promise/reason as to why I collected this line. Ok Palpatine is pretty cool too and the Stormtrooper. Ok, I can't choose. :sick

All I need now is a light up saber/ chestbox and wire through the cape and I'm done! Oh.. and I still need to paint both tusks so I'm aware of that ;)

But for some folks, that may not be enough to warrant getting it with their ANH's converted already. If I were a person content enough to repaint an ANH Vader to be ESB, I wouldn't likely spend another $120 for a few new hands and partial Anakin reveal, it'd take a hugely different and better figure that made me feel my converted custom wasn't good enough.

I've seen other people around her talking about tucking the rober under him and going for an ESB look.

WG commented that people would be wanting to undo their ANH-ESB conversions once the ESB figure came out, I was trying to say, I don't think the people who are making conversions want an ANH Vader at all and only bought the ANH figure because it's the first to come out and they weren't patient enough to just wait until ESB Vader was released.

I think someone has, I want to say I've seen posting's of a Vader with a light up chest box, not sure about the belt, but pretty sure I've seen a lit chest box.

While I applaud that, there are some uses of electronics that ultimately, I'd rather it not be done to keep cost down and in cases result in a better figure because it's not made to accommodate the electronics. Batteries only last so long, I'm not going to be bothered to turn the figures on often, a few times for photos and that's about it. Pieces where electronics actually would add to the actual display setting, then I care, like a spotlight over the Han in Carbonite wall would have been great, lights on Vader's chest, I'd use it a few times but ultimately it'd be money spent on a feature I rarely tap into.

Exactly, not sure how much of a markup there'd be, certainly now with Sideshow Vader we know what $120 gets us, if the option were $120 without lights and say $150 with, for Vader, I'd prefer to save the $30, I wouldn't get that much mileage out of the electronics on him. Yes there'd be the neat factor and it'd look cool, but since it's not an option right now and I can think logically, I know after a few photos of mine, I will never use that switch. I've turned the LEDs on my Predator like twice since I got it for some photos and that's it. If price is only affected $5-$10, that'd be ok to add it on, but if you're getting towards $15 and up, that's money wiser spent on other collectibles for me.

I'm still waiting for a replacement for my damaged Vader and it is taking to long already. I'm even considering canceling the replacement and asking for full refund and get the figure elsewhere and considering doing that with all my Sideshow items. Sideshow really dropped the ball this time. VERY DISAPPOINTING!

They're still backed up from SDCC. At least you're actually getting a replacement vs. having to just eat it if you'd gone through someone else.

That I don't understand, if the reason for sending it back is damage from shipping, Ex. owners should be allowed to keep the Ex. hand and just get sent a regular if necessary, it's not their fault the thing showed up broken and if the hand's fine, keep it, that way you still have an Ex. edition and get it replaced without concerns about how many are available for replacement.

Good point. I think it may have more to do with the yellow gold "exclusive" sticker on the box and the plastic bubble case that holds the exclusive hand. That's if they have to send the whole figure back. In my case, I just had to destroy the headsculpt/helmet and provide proof and they sent me a new head/helmet.

I don't really want to mod, rather futz it if any one has instructions how to remove all his gear safely that would be appreciated.
My stormtrooper heads are simply placed on the pegs & not pushed down, that also allows you to space out the body armour too so they don't look so squat in the upper torso (which is a big issue with these new body's I think)

Yeah, the Joker looks taller, but that's because he's placed a little bit more forward than Iron Man, so it's optical :D

I pieced together the SS Vader because I already bought so much stuff lately I could not afford to buy the whole figure at once. So I it was nice to be able to buy the parts separately and pay for it over two months time :o

Sideshow Darth Vader replacement finally arrived after more than a month. After the first problem with this figure, I was waiting for the replacement hoping it will be in perfect condition. It wasn't in perfect condition alas, but easily fixable though, and this was only because I kept certain parts from the damaged Vader (which I had to destroy).

The replacement Vader came with a broken ignited saber and the right belt box was unattached. I'm glad I have replacement for both, the saber was saved intentionally but the belt with boxes was among the destroyed parts but got out intact. so my new Vader is fixed with old Vader parts thus I'm not going to ask Sideshow for replacement parts.

As for the figure itself, it is impressive indeed. I like it a lot though I know the cod piece, belt boxes and chestbox could unglue at any time in the future being poorly attached. The next step will be to fix the dome to make it sit better but no flaring it yet.
