Here is what i did:

1. Padding the undersuit with tissue (only the hips and legs).
2. Ironing the robe and cape.
3. took a leathermilk and gave the whole undersuit, belt, boots and gloves a shine.
4. Hemet mod: 1. sanding the inside of the dome clear. 2. heating up the dome and widened the flares. Put the dome back in the right (movielike) position.

Did nothing to rise the shoulderarmor yet.

Spiker:

1. What did you use to "heat up" the dome?

2. How much flare would you say you added? Did it feel like a tweak or some pretty descent stretching required?

3. Was there any damage? do you feel the need to repaint the helmet after the mod?

Thanks!

Ok :vader

1. First i used a hairdryer but the process was too slow for my taste. So i boiled some water and put the dome in for about a minute.

2. There was some decent strechting required i added flare as long until i thought its right (used ref photos from ANH to compare).

3. There was some damage: The color began to get wrinkly a bit. So i used polish to make it smooth and shiny again (simple car-polish). Same i used on my 1:1 helmet. But i stopped at a point as i realized that i matched the ANH look perfectly by not making it supershiny. That look has to be not too flat and not too shiny.

okay guys, I just received my Darth Vader and it is good looking aight :)

EDIT: I JUST removed the dome, and it was A ^^^^^ removing it, daaaaamn
Since I cannot find my Dremel for now, I am gonna try to fix the box chest sitting more straight by padding the stomach area underneath his jump suit

EDIT2: I just did all the mods EXCEPT the dome mod, still can't find my dremel :)

but here a small step by step:
1. making sit Chestbox straight
this is what I used for materials, the foam from the box itself :) and some tape that I had left from modelling
http://users.telenet.be/erikoo/Figures/VADER/foam.JPG
http://users.telenet.be/erikoo/Figures/VADER/foam%20chest.JPG

it looks good imo

http://users.telenet.be/erikoo/Figures/VADER/chest1.JPG

2. Padding shoulder armor
here I just took a piece of paper and folded it a few times and again taped it to the bottom of the shoulder amor

3. Dome modification

This is my first post, and I wanted to share some pics of my Vader, naturally.

I've repainted the grey parts of the face and armor with the same paints I used to paint my life-size Vader. Out of the box it just looked too clean for my taste, so I painted over the grey and added some of the smudges and beat-up right tusk silver that makes the ANH helmet unique and look so well lived in.

I also modded the dome today. What a massive difference it makes, especially in pictures where the lens tends to make the helmet look even smaller than it is when it's placed higher on the head.

Here are some before and afters of the dome mod;

Just for fun, here he is standing in front of my life-sized (I know it's not screen-accurate) Vader;

This before and after says it all. Excellent work (and I must say, I was skeptical when I read that you repainted the silver/gray to achieve a more roughed up look, but the final product is outstanding. I think you nailed that ANH look!):

Does anyone know where I can buy just the head form ? I was doing the helmet mod and in the centre on the neck part it somehow got a dent in....must of warm it up too much and it hit something and dented....if anyone knows then let me know !!! Thanks...

P.S. For ppl who want to remove the helmet for the mod when u pull then pull upwards...not left or right but up...it came off quite quick when I did that...pulling any other way just makes it more risky and longer...

Actually, if he is leaning right forward, you would see LESS gap, not more. The more he leans forward, the less of his eyes you would see because the helmet would come over the eyes. You would see more gap if he was leaning backwards a bit.

I don't know. I always assumed you guys were right about this, but now I'm gonna have to research this a bit more before I commit to making any mod on my Vader. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'll try to find some clean reference pics from Episode IV before I do anything else. Then I'll have a friend who is a wizard in mathematics calculate exactly the distances in all relevant areas of the neck and face mask. I'll decide what to do then.

Darren Carnall

oh sorry. I assumed you were talking about the gap at the back between the dome and his shoulders.

Oh! No I was talking eyes/helmet only. As far as the distance between the base of the helmet and the shoulders, I believe this can easily be corrected by padding the shoulders, something which many have done already.

But thanks for your attention.

It's taken in a kinda grainy Michael Mann quality :)
But whenever I have the chance, I will take decent photos, but meanwhile, here is my modded Vader.

I HATE (yes I use that word) the unmodified dome, I have tons of pictures from "out of the box" figure, and its not bad of course, but it is just so obvious that its not screen accurate, and that the dome SHOULD sit lower!

So I did the dome-mod, the chest-mod and the shoulderpadding-mod and here is the result

Thanks, funny thing is that i just removed any support in the dome completley and left the mask alone. Then i adjusted the eye and eyebrow-level and put it down in the neck as far as possible. Pretty simple.

Oh, and is there a best way to get the dome off to begin with?

I boiled water, put the water in a cup and then put the dome in for about 1 Minute. Just a little too long as my paint did get some bubbles which i had to sand off (then used some polish to get the shine back).

My dome was glued at 4 points. I used a srewdriver to loose it very gentle.

Working and waiting for this work week to end in anticipation of the long-awaited dark lord's arrival up north here and...to my great surprise, he arrived a day early!

Just a quick shot of him out of the box and in all his glory...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2614/3773364601_2699b55259_o.jpg

What can I say that hasn't been said a zillion times in here already...

....this figure is really impressive. It was actually fun and interesting to futz with...I enjoyed taking stuff off to see how he is put together and of course to make some adjustments. Granted, I haven't gone the extra parsec some folks have....just a light iron on the fabric pieces and adjusting the armor/chest plate/belt etc...for me, that's all he needs.

As many have observed....he's big! He towers over the other figures...looking perfecting imposing. Although he features tight joints and stands well unassisted, I'm using the stand to avoid any accidental falls...

The only "issue" I had is the helmet wasn't glued on...but that's actually an advantage for me...it allows for putting the helmet firmly and properly in place...and it stays just fine without any glue.

The Dark Lord was a long time coming for this collection...but man, he turned out really well. Great job, Sideshow! Looking forward to getting some fun shots of him over the weekend...

I still just love the redish tint on the lens,(when the sun hits it it's best) i thought for sure the final product would be missing it.

The only thing I don't like about the tunic under the armor on this figure is without a paint job, I don't like the excessive ammount of silver showing.

I like that either the tunic or paint job broke up the silver with some black here and there.

I used to think that before I did the mod. But because I felt confident about doing it, I decided to give it a try and see why everyone else who had modded it, where now so happy with the results. Now I see pictures with the "prince charming hair cut" dome and can't believe how I could've been OK with that helmet. But, to each their own. If you think it's not broken, then why fix it. :)

Ok guys...since I'm lazy and don't want to comb through 100 pages of post. Can someone tell me how this mod is done?

Here's what I would like to know:

Are you guys breaking the peg in the helmet to get it off?

In the boiling process, are you guys keeping it in the water 10 secs or less?

Are you just glueing the helmet in place after you get it reset?

I get the shoulder armor mod and the chest box mod. I'm primarily interested in what to watch out for and what to do to get the helmet modded.

noncence imo, especially if you know what you are doing, you should do it.

Many said it, pictures say it, I have seen it with my own eyes, the difference between an unmodded and a modded one is day and night!

+ when they showed the protoytpe on the convention last year, (there are pictures posted here from me) than you see that they had the dome RIGHT on the prototype.
So now they haven't, maybe something got confused in the production thus having a slightly inaccurate dome-placing.

Mod it, and you will enjoy it even more

Here all all the mods described, except for flaring of the helmet (imo, not neccessary, the helmet is good as it is, it is just to high sitting, that's all imo)

I apologise for the crappy quality (2 megapixel) (whenever I have the chance, I will take decent photos)
But meanwhile, here is my modded Vader.

I HATE (yes I use that word) the unmodified dome, here there are tons of pictures from "out of the box" figure, and its not bad of course, but it is just so obvious that its not screen accurate, and that the dome SHOULD sit lower!

Here a small step by step:
1. making sit Chestbox straight
this is what I used for materials, the foam from the box itself :) and some tape that I had left from modelling
http://users.telenet.be/erikoo/Figures/VADER/foam.JPG
http://users.telenet.be/erikoo/Figures/VADER/foam%20chest.JPG

it looks good imo
http://users.telenet.be/erikoo/Figures/VADER/chest.JPG
http://users.telenet.be/erikoo/Figures/VADER/chest1.JPG

2. Padding shoulder armor
here I just took a piece of paper and folded it a few times and again taped it to the bottom of the shoulder amor
http://users.telenet.be/erikoo/Figures/VADER/shoulder.JPG
http://users.telenet.be/erikoo/Figures/VADER/shoulder1.JPG

3. Dome modification
Haven' took picture of this, but when you remove the dome, you will see "ribs" inside of the dome, just dremel those away!
Than you can put it on the head, but before you use the (super)glue know how you prefer it to sit on the head.

Riko
08-01-2009, 01:00 AM
So I did the dome-mod, the chest-mod and the shoulderpadding-mod and here is the result

cerealkeller
08-01-2009, 04:08 AM
All I did was remove the head, grasp the helmet with one hand and use pliers to pull the mask down. Be careful but you will here a snap, don't worry it's just the glue. After that, it's trimming away at the supports under the helmet with an exacto or dremmel. Takes awhile, but I like the results.

Got a chance between weekend chores today to enjoy this figure a bit...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2572/3779868014_767c884bfe_o.jpg

Sideshow really outdid themselves with this one...the materials used, the construction, the overall look...it's all just great.

It's been interesting following the thread and how some folks feel compelled to add their own modifications to this figure and they're looking pretty good....but for me, just the usual redress/futz and I think he looks just fine.

I've enjoyed collecting Sideshow's line of Star Wars figures since they acquired the license and while they've all been pretty decent figures for the most part, every once and a while, one comes along and pushes all the right buttons...gets the nostalgic feelings going ( I actually threw in the ANH DVD and watched a few Vader scenes while looking/futzing with this figure) and also pushes the line into a new level of quality. This Vader is one of those figures...it's that good.

I'll get a lot of enjoyment out of this figure...and it's great to see many others in this forum are too....bravo, Sideshow...bravo!

I think that was made to look exactly like the props... versus what the ideal version would look like. Could be wrong, but as knowledgable as Gino is I don't think he'd unintentionally have a sloppy paint job.

Exactamundo.

The screen used ANH helmet and armor were actually brush painted, not spray painted. They weren't spray painted until ESB.
You can see the brush strokes very clearly in the gunmetal areas.

Here's the problem, though. I can't stand it when everyone gets in line to say how great someone's customization/mod/paintjob/custom sculpt is when its perfectly obvious to any fan that the end product isn't quite up to snuff. Personally, I haven't seen anyone's mod in this thread that I didn't think looked very nice, but I'd much rather have honest REAL feedback on these projects. Because if you don't think it looks right, guess what? I might be able to use the review to make some changes and improve the work.

I'm not saying that anyone needs to be or should be rude or tell someone that they are a talentless hack, but I'd much rather read "I can see you did a lot of work on this, but here are the areas that aren't quite blowing up my skirt...":lol. I'd like to think we're all big enough to take some constructive criticism

everyone is entitled to their opinion, and like yourself, i too would prefer honesty... i mean, what is the point of posting a custom if not to share ideas? i think the thing to keep in mind is that "beauty is in the eye f the beholder" and no artist ever makes everyone happy... that really isn't the point of art and never should be.

Wow! I got a replacement head for Vader (a serious scratch on the right side of his dome), and the head looks like it was dropped and kicked across the floor. Thanks. Hopefully they will wake up and send me a Vader finally.

A replacement head would be better than to send back the whole figure. I also asked for them just to send a new codpiece with belt and chestbox with straps to replace mine but they insisted I have to destroy the figure... and till now I only have Vader parts at my house... I could make a nice soup of them.:banghead

Well, yeah, it sucks, but let me personally state that I love this figure and think it is the best 1/6th Vader available on the market, and it will be tough to beat.

The scratch across the side of his helmet on mine is not horrible, but is noticeable on the clean shiny surface of his dome. It is the only real flaw and I assume it was caused during shipment in the packaging. I am now considering having the helmet fixed and painted by a pro. I will NOT give him back!

galactiboy
08-04-2009, 09:33 AM
Have to agree with you on it being the best 1/6 (mass produced) Vader out there. I never bothered with the Hasbro ones, but have owned both Medicom versions. And while the Medicom Vaders are great figures... this is just a more impressive overall package.

Les Walker

Amongst all the work I am doing, I am gonna post a part 2 video of my SS Vader (Pt 1 was just opening the box...) and a Part 3, since I have been thinking of making mine into an Empire Vader. We'll see.

Sorry to hear of woes regarding the figure though. Mine, thanks again to Maulfan for being able to even have one, almost has to be an Empire one, since I am pretty happy with my custom New Hope guy. And the SS helm is more of an Empire shape to it.

I think, just removed and repositioned helm is enough. All this heating up and widening may damage the coating. Anyone know what SS uses to coat the plastic parts with? It is not an acrylic I don't think. It is nice stuff, hard, brittle when it dries, hence the cracks. Acrylic won't usually crack like that. Probably a plastic based high gloss paint. Be careful with the helms and shin guards too.

Riko
08-04-2009, 10:46 AM
as good this figure is, it seems SS made a mess in mass production and are not at the same level as Hot Toys.

Look at all those call backs and flaws here. Even on mine there is a (very tiny though) paint error on the dome

I'd say the issues here are pretty minor and not the norm considering all the parts involved... majority of the issues being scratches (which are hard to avoid on a glossy black surface) and the high points (the tusks) getting damaged in transit.

Well, I posted this in the Customs section, but this looks like a better place to put it.

My goal here is an ESB Vader, as screen accurate as possible:

I painted the lenses, obviously. Painted the collar armor and shoulder pads, and added a new chain.

I used a Hasbro Darth Vader suit to make ESB/ROTJ accurate gloves. Not 100% satisfied, but I think they look good.

Here are the gloves on the figure:

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc198/mrfusion1138/JMKscustomESBDarthVader67.jpg

The chest box is a recast of the Kaiyodo 1/6 Vader kit (nearly impossible to find!). I attached the Sideshow straps to the back and painted it.

Well, I wrote to Sideshow to ask if I could get a replacement chest box for my Vader since it had this weird dark spot on the green button. They said they had to send me a whole new Vader and to send the other one back. I really didn't want to because of some of the helmet horror stories I've read on here, but I went ahead and risked it. Now, I have a helmet with these odd 'cuts' on the front. I assume this is not normal? Not seeing it on anyone else's domes...

I'm fortunate enough to own the Exclusive in MIB condition and the Regular that I have on display . The Helmet on the Regular dos have a few blimishes but its not worth sending back.

I think this figure is awsome both MIB and displayed .

Ditto. I used to be like that, but then realized life is to short to have it in a box.

Is that an extra Vader you have, or are you just too impatient to wait for SST to release their ESB version?

Both. Neither Ben or I got the exclusive. I am hoping Sideshow will release a ROTJ version after this one.

I open all my figures, but I recognize that some just look beautiful in the box as well. I totally get displaying MIB. Enjoy your figs, man! If enjoying means MIB, opened and plaed with, or bashed with a hammer then nailed to the ceiling. Enjoy!

Is Wiring the cape an easy job?
That would be awesome on the ESB version

I've fixed the dome recently, so better pics are coming.

Wiring the cape is not hard, just tedious to feed it through all that material. If anyone wants it done, I'll be glad to do it for $15. :naughty

Let me start off by saying that this figure blew me away. As soon as i pulled back the magnetic flap and saw him staring back at me I was in awe. All I can say is if ever there was a figure that was worth a year wait it was this guy. After some futzing and adding some padding here and there, it looks like Vader stepped right off the screen and onto my detolf! Bravo Sideshow

My reply from SS regarding the Vader replacement:

"Please know your replacement order is currently in transit to our EU warehouse from our US warehouse. Unfortunately, most of our staff was out of the office for the San Diego Comic Con which delayed your replacement order in shipping out. Once your replacement arrives to our EU warehouse, it will be processed and delivered directly to you. Please expect an update email from our EU warehouse, as soon as your item is received. We appreciate your patience in this matter!"

Hopefully I won't need to pay customs charges again and it will arrive in perfect shape this time...

Awesome work Mikey, those pictures demonstrate exactly why i hope ESB/ROTJ Vader feature a wired cape, but it was livable that it's absent on the ANH as I don't feel a need for such dynamic setups with that Vader, but ESB/ROTJ most certainly.

I don't know, I love my Vader but I don't see him beating the DX Joker or the MK I Ironman from Hot Toys. Or the HT Godfather for that matter. That Godfather is just amazing. It just hasn't gotten the hype of other releases because it is based on a 70's movie.

I am only getting the DX Joker because I don't have one in my collection. I just about to pull the trigger on bank robber Joker to go with Bats when this one was announced. The MK 3 Ironman is amazing too! I am just getting MK I because I have been a fan of shell head and the Avengers for about 30 years or so.

For me, what ever figure I have in the case is not quite as good as the one that is shipping next month. :lol

It's definitely a top candidate. It'll come down to what people feel qualifies as a top figure. For some, it may be for how impressive it appears, for others, it may take unique engineering, aspects that take the piece above and beyond normal expectation, such as PERS from Hot Toys.

Vader's definitely one of the most impressive figures I've ever bought, it just has presence, there's something about him no other figure does to me when I see him on display.

Jaycepticon

It's definitely a tough call, but Iron Man, Predator, & Darth Maul are my top three. I don't care in what order they come in either, it's just so hard to pick one

While Vader is certainly awesome and definately the finest SSC figure I own...I would not say it contends for figure of the year...a close second or third maybe. If just compared with other SSC figs, it would certainly get the nod. But for me, it doesn't break any ground nor was it created with any out of the box thinking imo. Its the best representation of Vader to date in this scale but compared to the catalog of HTs figs that have been released this year, he wouldn't make the cut...he'd get the nomination but not the award.
Just my 2 cents...

Now if he came with lights.......:naughty

hey folks, i finally got round to taking some shots of my ss vader.

as i mentioned in my "review" last month, this is an excellent figure. i don't know about best 1/6 figure of 2009 (my vote is still for the hot toys iron man mark1) but i'm pretty sure it is hands down the best 1/6 ss has ever done!

anyway, i know this is a epIV figure, but just felt like recreating the bespin scene from epV...
