Looks so much better, Chaka. Did you widen the flare as wel? Also, how much of the helmet did you have to sand?

Chakaman
07-23-2009, 02:16 PM
Thanks. No I did not widen the flare. I pretty much sanded off the entire inside of the helmet so it would sit lower on the head. I also sanded off a bit on each side of the head.

The hardest part for me was getting the dome off.

I have glued it on, sorry. I pretty much sanded off everything inside the dome. All that was left was a smooth interior. The dome now just rests on the head naturally.

How did u go about getting the dome off?

Yes, please share how easy or hard it was.

Great pics too -- really crisp. And that helmet fix is quickly becoming my number one 'want' for this figure. Looks to make all the difference. That and the shoulder padding.

Getting the dome off was kind of a ^^^^^ to be honest. I popped the head off and held the bottom of the head with a pair of pliers. I then just slowly pulled and worked the dome off of the head. It took some coaxing, but it came off eventually.

Not sure this mod is for everyone, but if you are careful and take your time the results are worth the risk in my opinion.

wow..its nice!!!what did u mod ?

I cut and dremeled all the supprt ribbing inside the helmet
cut an eigth of an inch off of the peg and sanded it down to make it a little thinner.

It worked out beautifuly, and gave a great end result. I do intend to repaint the helmet because the vacum packaging left minute scratches in the finish, and I may also try to flare out the sides as well.

I agree, I think I will flare out the helmet. As for the tilt back on the dome, by cutting out the ribbing, the dome tilts back on its own. I don't know why this happened, but it did.

What I did forget to mention is that I also added small amounts of foam padding under the shoulder armor. this raised the shoulder armor and eliminated the gap between the neck and shoulders which brings the dome down more. I got this tip from a fellow Forum member in the other Vader photo thread. I used 1/4 inch foam rectangular peices which I affixed with double sided tape. The figure still retains it's articulation.

Hi, this is my first time to post pictures here. I love to read these forums very often. I collected 12" figures especially star wars.

I learnt that this SS darth vader is extremely tall from all threads. So the moment I collected this figure, I decided to adjust his height by cutting & rejoined 5mm on the thighs & 3mm on the neck.

After the modification, he still looks giant to the others. Anyway, hope you enjoy the pictures. Thank you:lol

I dunno. I was considering doing the helmet mod myself, but seeing all these pics, it looks like the mod makes the head look a bit smooshed or scrunched. Large face and tiny little top of head. I think I'd rather stick out the shorter helmet and leave well enough alone. True the dome's a bit short in length, but IMO it looks better proportionately.

MaulFan
07-23-2009, 11:30 PM
Yup, as long as folks are happy that's what counts, but I don't believe that simply lowering and changing position of the helmet can correct the difference, I really think the production domes looks the way it does is because of missing helmet in the flare section, lowering it changes positions but doesn't make up for the missing mass, so it can throw other things off.

Finally recevied my Vader yesterday and I am totally blown away by him! all the comments have been posted like "the helmet is a non-issue in hand", how he is "PF quality", how he feels hefty and sturdy, etc, etc...all these comments are true! This is probably now my favorite piece in my entire collection, not counting just Sideshow figures.

I was fortunate to no have any problems either. Both tusks intact, nothing broken, no weird cape problem...just one perfect, AWESOME figure! Couldn't be happier. I wil lpost pics when I get home today, I was too busy basking in Vader's awesomeness yesterday to even think about taking pics.

These mods are really looking great. I think Deoxyribonucleic's which included the extra flare is the best I've seen for my money.
http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q155/deoxyribonucleic/SSCVader001.jpg

But I'm inclined to agree with MF regarding the overall effect. Combine this with the fact that I'm in no way willing to risk destroying the best production piece I own to try these mods myself.

I'm still going to hold out for a complete new replacement dome that hits all of the ANH specs (as best it can). If that were ever to become available, this figure would go from great to ridiculous...

Besides the dome issue my only nit pick would be the gauntlets seem to attach to low making his fore arms a little to long, will have to try and fix that. Other than that he is awesome!

I have been wondering how Vader would look with a modified hasbro helmet. Thanks for the pics Katkuru. It looks really good...except from the profile shot. It seems as if the front of the dome should slant back some when looking at the figure from the side. The hasbro dome must have been heavily modified as I remember the real version having a slant...or maybe it is just the way you have it positioned in the profile picture.

In any case, it looks great! I think the size of the dome makes the head look larger...in a good way.

I hope custom domes are offered to members so that we have options.

The hasbro dome must have been heavily modified as I remember the real version having a slant...or maybe it is just the way you have it positioned in the profile picture.

In any case, it looks great! I think the size of the dome makes the head look larger...in a good way.

I hope custom domes are offered to members so that we have options.

The profile shot is with a GG helmet, not a Hasbro one.

I was just about to correct him on that as well, looks great with the Hasbro helmet..luckily i have one just, i have no idea what to do with it..was there any filing done to get the widows peak on that helmet?, i take it you painted it matte black as well?.

As far as Vader goes, I really thought I was going to want to do all types of mods to him when he arrived but not so much now. In hand he's absolutely awesome. About the only thing I'll do to him is grind the torso down a bit like Darren did to allow for the chest box to sit closer to flush with his armor. I like the helmet as is screen inaccurate and all.

The Hasbro dome was gutted and Magic Sculpt was used to make the widows peak. Then it was casted and painted in matte black.

I allowed myself to finish a bit early tonight (well I was at my desk at 7am this morning lol) so I did some work on Vader. Damn this is a nice piece... is just feels so... chunky.. in hand. I love it.

Unfortunately I didn't take any photos during the process (sorry guys, I didn't even think!) :o Anyway I did what I said i was going to do.

I dremelled down his chest, and padded up his waist.

I put foam padding under the shoulder armour to lift it slightly, to close the gap between the armour and the helmet-neck. ( I was going to lower the head initially.. but this turned out to be way more work that I wanted to do, and luckily... doing it this way has actually maintained better proportions)

I cut/sanded his arms thinner under his armpits, to let his arms fall closer to his sides. Sadly this only made a small amount of difference due to the thick folds of the undersuit. I should have cut more away... but it's fine.

I took the helmet off, shaved down the supporting 'spines' that run around the plug that goes into the hole on the top of his head. I did this until it could sit at the right height, however then when I tilted it back, it stuck too far out at the front. So i had to do more cutting and shaping of the hole itself making it bigger... and various parts of his head & helmet. Eventually it would sit right, and I glued it. (only temporary... as I want to make the widow's peak.. but that's another day. This looks good enough for now)

With all these done, even when the head is straight (not tilted back) the dome goes back to the shoulders, and the gap under his neck has gone too. (slightly less articulation... but only slightly. And I'm happier with it like this)

Anyway.... pics. As I've got to go downstairs now and figure out what I'm cooking for Jane :lol (just had a text, she's on her way home from work lol I'm a good house husband )

wow dude, the result is their! nice mods

I assume you do not have any pics of the head and the inside of the helmet so that we can see those modifications? :o

Looks great Fia. Is the helmet also tilted back slightly? I think these mods really improve the look of the figure, though I think that adding more flare will improve the figure even more.

I agree, I think I will flare out the helmet. As for the tilt back on the dome, by cutting out the ribbing, the dome tilts back on its own. I don't know why this happened, but it did.

can you gusy explain what "flare" or "flaring out" means in this context?

flaring out means widening the sides of the helmet to increase the outward angle towards the bottom . The head is removable(just like a stormie)
The site that sells parts is toyanxiety.com. A few members have done this(flared the helmet), I may do it( haven't decided yet). I do intend to repaint the helmet.

So I was BORED today and decided to fix my Vader. It didn't take too long and its pretty easy. Here he is.

First, I sawed off 1 1/2 inches from his thighs. Then I hollowed out his dome so it now sits lower like it did in ANH. I created the widow's peak and flared out the sides a bit. I think I did it!
What do you think?

Hi Riko, please pardon me for joining in.
For a friendly advice, do think twice & make ajdustment before you do the cutting.

Measure the height that you prefer to align with your SW figures first.
Start with a short length of 5mm (like I did to mine), then judge again. If you feel to go shorter, then cut again. Hope you enjoy the modification.

Cheer :lol

YES! I was measuring like crazy next to my Troopers as I was making cuts. I took about 1 1/2 inches off by the end, I think.

how come your padding the "gut" area ?

I padded it slightly since the chest box sat against the pecs and angled down, so I padded under the pecs on the gut a bit to make the lower box angle forward a bit, like in ANH.

The thighs are a better place to mod as it will not effect the clothing at all. You will just have a little extra pant to tuck into the boot. Removing from Vader's mid section will effect the belt and space between the chest box and belt.

These mods are really looking great. I think Deoxyribonucleic's which included the extra flare is the best I've seen for my money.

Thanks for the kind words :) I also like the pics from the person (sorry, can't remember your user name) who added the padding to the armor to bring the shoulders up closer to the helmet. Great job on all the mods everyone!

QGF, I will also get, when available, a completely new dome if someone ever does make one. But for now, my minimal mods will do. I just couldn't get over the helmet being so far above his eyebrows, but that's just my personal preference. This figure, mods or not, is the most amazing piece Sideshow has done IMHO. Great JOB SSC!

I just couldn't get over the helmet being so far above his eyebrows, but that's just my personal preference. This figure, mods or not, is the most amazing piece Sideshow has done IMHO. Great JOB SSC!

Agreed... It's certainly one of the best, nice work btw.

Nice mod eczamurai!

but could you make a full frontall picture of the head? I'd like to see the head from the front, not from a low or high perspective, but full frontal.
Because it seems you have lowered it a lot the helmet, and I't like to see the result..

Cheer :lol

Hi all... apologies if this is in the wrong thread, but as we're discussing mods, I feel confident enough to ask in here.... My vader arived this morning, and when I display him, I'm planning on putting the inner robe under the shoulder armour.... can anyone tell me how this is accomplished as I see that a few other folks have done it too..... I really hope it just involves fiddling and sliding as I dont feel confindent enough to take anything apart, especially as I have spent a fortune on this guy and I really dont want to risk destroying him.

P.S..... any illustrative pics would be amazing..........

Thank you all in advance....

I don't have the figure, but by logic on the picture I assume you have

1. remove the head
2. than you can remove the cape
3. than you can remove the part from the innerrobe from his shoulders so you can lift up the shoulder armor and remove it
4. put the inner robe back on the shoulders and put the shoulder armor back ont its place and all the rest

Another question about Iceberg's mod,
I really wonder if the head stays on with that mode because if you removed that black thing sticking out underneath...

...how does it keep sitting on its place now, I wonder if you turn the head up and down, won't the head just fall off with this mod?
Because I think the purpose of that thing is to let the head sit on its place...
But now its gone :confused::horror

raising the shoulder armour by putting sponge/foam/kitchen roll underneath has the same effect as lowering the head like that, and is much easier to do. No cutting or anything.

Also it has the added benefit of making the shoulder bells sit right... the don't get 'pushed up' by the shoulders anymore now. They hang down just as they should :)

and so where does the sponge/foam go exactly? underneath his shoulder armor or underneath the jumpsuit? what is best, does it make any difference?

Underneath the jumpsuit. It took me about 3 mins to strip him off and put some tissue padding on his shoulders and a bit on his chest. Im gonna have a go at his dome in a bit.

07-28-2009, 06:17 AM
Hi Riko, thanks for the questions.
I re-arranged the photos with instructions in the orginal forum.
Actually, I glued back the cut neck (using superglue) at the last step.

I like the idea of placing foam/sponge underneath the shoulder armour. I'd done this on my Medicom's Vader last time. Very easy steps, helps to increase the height.

As for Sideshow this time, I want to shorten Vader's height to match other SW figures.
I studied & cut not more than 5mm (to prevent it looks long body wtih short legs) at the thighs. Then I excused the body mod, and choose the neck to cut 3mm.

Results: I closed the gaps between the neck & shoulder armour, and shorten the height by @8mm.

lol so you would mind stripping him again to show us all again how and how much padding you used on his body? :)

You dont need much i used a 1/4 of a kleenex on each shoulder and the rest of it on his chest, and stuck it down with some black tape. It only needs to be raised a few mm so its not major padding. I folded the tissue a few times so its about 2cm wide, so it fits nicely betwen his neck and shoulder joints. Then i taped it loosly length ways over his shoulder.

This has been an epic morning!
Got both HT's Don Vito and SST's Vader.

Both are amazing figures!

Vader is indeed massive and just oozes coolness and the whole figure screams quality. The dome of the helmet was unattached which is a big plus 'cause now I don't need to do it myself! Also the chest-box is a bit off-kilter, but only slightly. At any rate, the sculpting and materials are great, and the massive presence of the figure is awesome. Best SST figure yet.

Well, my happiness was kinda short-lived...
After a long meeting I got back to my office and as I sat down I glanced over at Vader and noticed for the first time how different the black tusk actually looked.
But I was kinda busy so I got to work.
Later on I started messing around with the figure again and then it hit me: the black tusk was missing!
Funny thing is, I don't even remember the thing, so now I'm not sure if it was broken in the first place (the dome of the helmet was off right out of the box, but undamaged), or maybe someone in the office "played" with it and was careless...
So I'm kinda bummed.
It's not terrible, after all, it is the black one, so it's not as noticeable, but it still bothers me.
I guess I'll try to make a new one, after all it's just a small ball...

Anyway, some more thoughts on the figure now that Vader is at home among his loyal imperial troops!

The height is a bit distracting. I mean, most of you guys already have him, but damn! Vader is really big. It only dawns on you when you put him next to a Pred or an Alien...
Helmet mod is a must for me, but it'll have to wait, as I have to go on a business trip tomorrow.

At any rate, easily my favorite SST figure, and quality wise I think it is much better than Medicom's. Doesn't mean I don't like my Medi-Vader anymore, just means SST's is better.

Everybody who's still waiting for one is in for a treat!

My Vader arrived about 2 hours ago....at first because it looked so big and it was still in the box it looked like a cheap $50 Hasbro version....and boy was I freaking wrong.....the minute I took it out and saw that helmet and then the cloth...faux leather clothing.....the sheilds on the legs....WOW man......WOW !!! It was like when they pan a character in a film, starting from the legs to the head...three things that bug me at the moment is how loose the head is (which is alright because its easier to pose but I dnt want it to flop down after too much moving around) and the other is...how far the head sits from the rest of the body...what i mean is that theres no bulk around the neck/shoulders....i dnt know if putting padding under the shoulders will fix this but I tried raising the shoulder part with my fingers and it wont budge so i'll have to see.. finally the arms are too long but its no biggie...also I dnt see nothing wrong with the helmet...it looks fine...dnt look to elongated but just about right...as I look at it right now in my ikea detolf cabinet as it towers over my hot toys figures I just say to myself Vader's turned me to the dark side on this one....I love this figure.

Set it on lowest temp first and go over the cape with the iron...keep raising the temp on your iron until the creases start to go away instantly...using the steam feature wont do no damage...I iron the cape this morning on my figure and I also did both the inside and out so yeah its safe to iron the cape !!!!

It depends how far u want to customise him. If your happy with his height you dont need to mod it. If u want to do the dome, its not that hard. and if u want to pad his shoulders so you loose the gap between the shoulder armour and the neck thats not hard either.

Oh, ok. So I guess the hardest is the height, which I can easily live with. In fact, I prefer my Vader towering over the others, so...

I'll probably look into the other 2 mods. Thanks!

So if I understand correctly, this Vader figure takes quite a bit of work to get it up to specs doesn't it? It may be the best Vader figure version out there, but we have to mod it.

Correction: We don't have to mod it. It looks incredible and has an amazing presence right out of the box. We're all just a bunch of picky buggers that's all :o

Oh.. and about the shoulder padding. Most people are putting theirs under the bodysuit... which is probably better/more accurate. But I just taped mine under the armour itself... so it lifts the armous up from the bodysuit. But all you see is that it looks better. No gap at all.

So if anybody is really lazy... you don't have to undress him at all :lol

I think that's different. Are we talking about the neck hitting the armor, or the dome hitting the armor? I thought people were stuffing the armor upwards to make the neck and armor touch. Otherwise, they were modding the interior of the dome to make the dome sit lower.

The neck touches the armor fine on mine, and since I have no problem with the dome higher, I'm letting that be.

the most of the discussion was about the dome - shoulder distance.
As far as I know, only Iceberg made a radical neck cut on the figure so the neck would sit closer to the armor (and automatically the dome would also sit closer to the shoulder + he also did a dome mod)

imo, the neck is a non issue.

So I think I will put the padding under the shoulder Armor too :)

yeah that's mine. The only difference in putting the padding under the suit is that if you took the armour off, it would look like his shoudlers, and not like he had padding on his shoulders lol.... but as we're all leaving the armour on, putting the padding under the shoulder armour works just fine. The shoulder bells and the cape hide any gap that might otherwise be visible.

It's always most important to me to have characters standing as they would in real life... hence the haunch, or the neck leaning forward off the shoulders. Most of the time toys look like toys... its because the neck is directly at the top of the shoulders going straight up... and we don't look like this.

So... lower and tilt back the dome a bit (but not too much!).... padd under the shoulder armour to remove the gap.... and push that neck forward (its double jointed) ...and you have a pretty damn good looking vader. (the gap is there for posability. Once you push the armour up to his neck, you can still move it, just a little less.

oh, and I dremelled down the chest muscles (they stick out too much at the bottom) and padded the stomach to bring them more level, so the control box sits straighter. (he has a typical action figure big chest and miniscule waist.... so this makes the control box tilt forward)

but remember... you don't have to do any of this. Vader looks amazing straight out of the box :rock Nobody is knocking the figure. This is just for perfectionists like me :o

by "tilt back the dome a bit", you mean tilt it toward the front, right? (since in the mods you cannot see vaders "eyebrows")

and I couldn't make out of the pics from Iceberg that it was double jointed, nice feature, that helps to make the hunch indeed.

Dunno if I am gonna dremel away some of his chest, can't that be leveled by just adding more padding in his chest to make it alligned?

PS: when it comes to figures, I am also a real perfectionist!

By tilt back, I mean tilting the back of the dome downwards a bit. When you look at the head from the side... if you follow the straight line of the bridge of his nose upwards... it's the same angle as the front of his helmet... but in real life his helmet should be leaning back ever so slightly. I tried to find a picture so explain this but couldnt find one.

By leaning this back it makes the profile more accurate, but also lowers the dome at the back more.. helping with the main issue everyone has about the dome being too high.

So i lowered it slightly... and tilted it towards the back slightly. But not too much. I did the eyebrow arches to be in line with the ones on the helmet. Maybe slightly higher. I didn't do them lower as some have.... from the side it looks ok but it looks too low from the front. Do it a bit at a time until you're happy.

The chest could probably be helped by just padding the stomach.... but I knew how far out I wanted the control box to protrude in front of the chest armour... and on this figure it was too far... so for me cutting back the chest (or sanding it I guess) was the way to go.

oh, and Spiker... amazing pic. Looks just like a man in a suit!! :rock

Put a bit of tissue paper padding over his shoulders uzumaki_1 strip him off and put it on the nude body and tape it loosely. It raises the shoulder armour so it meets the neck nicely.

Hey yeah I was gonna do that anyways...i got some cotton and loosely rolled them up in balls and stuffed them under the shoulder..can't seem them so its all good. Also got the robe part and put it under the shoulder pads instead of over them....gives it a beefer look and more accurate (depending on which movie you want it to look like). Am not bothering with the helmet mod...might do it sometime if am brave enough...no one that I know is gonna notice it.

It seems as though if you are careful you won't mess up. AND if you do mess up by making the helmet too low or something, all you have to do is wedge something between the dome and the lower helmet to make it higher. Worst case scenario is that you screw it up so bad that you have to buy another helmet off of ebay. I think it is significantly worth it to really improve the figure. When I have mine in hand, I will definitely mod the helmet (but not too low or it will look squashed)
