Not really. It was really difficult to destroy the figure, the body is really sturdy.

What tools did you use for that level of destruction? And how long did it take?

I tried my AK-47 and bazooka on Vader. Didn't help much. Then I stepped over him with my AT-AT, but we almost turned over - he's a strong [censored]. I also used the Death Star on him, but blew up the entire neighborhood, and Vader was still there laughing under his broken mask (and flying cod piece). Tried to drown him but he is like a ^^^^ing duck: he floats. Finally he made sepukku with his own lightsaber :D

On a more serious note I used a hammer and a claw and took about 15 minutes - scissors for clothes

All,
If anyone have ever watched the Vader's backstage pass video from SS, the guy said that SS "developed a new body just for one character". Well, I was watching ep IV last night and noticed that Chewbacca is also as tall as Vader. Therefore I think SS should use the same body, and make some kind of fur type bodysuit to make the 1/6th scaled Chewbacca. What do you guys think? I think it is possible.

Just picked one of these up from my comic shop. Had him pre-ordered, but canceled it when I got laid off last year. This is now the only SW collectible I own. It's friggin' awesome. The shop was charging $125 for him, so I suppose I got a better deal.

Sorry but it still looks wrong. The overall shape of the helmet is whats wrong, not the how it sits.

I think it's a combination of four things.

1. The helmet does need to sit below the eyebrows
2. It needs to tilt back more, which does help with the overall look IMO,
3. the bell part of the dome needs to have been made longer in general as it is short compared to the head part of the helmet/dome.
4. There needs to be more flare of the dome which is why I did the boiling water method

Tired to get some better pics, not so sun bleached:

Sorry if you've already addressed this, but I'm curious if you did any kind of mod to the helmet or if that's a custom helmet. I tried to skim through all the Vader threads to see if you mentioned doing any kind of mod and couldn't find anything. Your helmet looks perfect. Fits exactly the way it should. Love the kitty shots too! :lol

Hi UMRebel, I lowered the height of the plastic tabs in the helmet so it sits lower on the mask. I also replaced the chain so his cape can wrap around the neck. This gives his shoulders more of a sloping profile similar to what he had in the movie. One of his tusks broke off, so I replaced them with metal tusks. I'm still working on something that I will be satisfied with.

I also need to ask Glenn if he would sell just the machined metal tusks he uses for his Vaders, for they look a lot cooler than the plastic ones on SS.

While I still haven't received a shipping notice for mine yet, I did get to see Vader in person today at a local comic and toy show. He is simply amazing in person! I really had to double check to make sure it was the Sideshow figure because, as so many others have already said, pictures just don't do him justice! I was amazed at how great he looks, he really is a cut above the rest of the line. It looks like a tiny man in a suit, I swear. I was excited to be getting mine soon, but I am doubly excited now...he can't get here soon enough!

Damn JKNO...i would had atleast saved the shoulder armor for a custom or something, sucks customs over there are Nazi's.

I was able to save a few things: original exclusive box, the stand, the hands that were not already attached to Vader but were in the separate tray of the box (thus I saved the exclusive Force choke hand too) and both lightsabers. Besides those there are a few other items left in 100% condition: belt with belt boxes, chestbox itself, and both shin guards (one has a peg damaged).

FedEx packages (this one was sent with them) are opened up in customs at Otopeni airport Bucharest (500 km from my city). USPS packages and Express Mail packages are opened in my city where there is also a customs office and the packages are opened in front of you. So in Bucharest many things could have happened...:(

http://i29.tinypic.com/k39kd5.jpg

See the picture above with the box packed with that black tape by the FedEx customs in Bucharest. Again, it hasn't been open in front of me, but 500 km away...

Note: "Deschis pentru control vamal la FedEx Romania" means "Opened for customs at FedEx Romania"

Not in Lucas' eyes, for Lucas, Darth Vader is a name, not a look.

Not just in Lucas' eyes. Anyone who respects the story behind the collectibles should acknowledge that Anakin became Darth Vader before he wore the black armour. That has been a fact since day one. It isn't prequel retrocon, it is a very important point in the saga. It always drives me crazy when Star Wars fans choose to disregard this very important element of Anakin's story.

Hey Deoxy, do you have an pics of your modded vader from the side? Also, in the other thread, you stated that when putting the helmet in boiling water, the paint started to look flaky. How long did you have it in the water? I ask because I might try the same thing. I wonder if using a hair dryer to soften the plastic may work in the same way and be less dangerous?

Crimsonbob
07-19-2009, 11:12 AM
No dont use a hair dryer it will shrink and warp the plastic, i tried that on 1 of my stormtroopers and it warped it a bit. Boiling hot water doesn't harm the plastic at all.

Jacklyn is sending me just a replacement head (neck piece of helmet was chipped when it arrived)and told me to destroy the old one and send pics. I thought that was cool of them(but odd),but I'm surprised they didnt have you return the complete figure. I thought they only had me do this because I told them the figure was fine and I'd just need them to send a head if they would do that.

Is this going to be SSC new return policy? Maybe just on the armored figs?

Here are a couple of pics from the side. I have his head positioned as far down as it will go against his chest.

I've never done the hair dryer thing so I can't say, but it seems it might be a safer bet.

I dipped the front part of the dome sides (not the entire helmet) in the water 5 different times, each for about 7 - 8 seconds, then ran it under cool water after reshaping it. I'm not sure if it was the heat or the "reshaping" that made the paint get that pattern. Good thing is you can't see it at all unless one, you know where to look and two, you are right up close as in a couple inches away from it. It's still shiny. I think they painted the helmet then put a gloss coat over it because the helmet is still super shiny even where the paint underneath got those few veins in it.

Dont use a hairdryer it will warp and shrink the plastic.

I actually prefer this over the boiling method. Keeping the hair dryer far enough away and judging by touch when it is soft enough to be pliable is best for this method. Holding the hair dryer right against it and blasting it for a couple of minutes is how you get warped and melted items. The shrinking is highly doubtful given that the science behind the whole method (heat/expansion) says the opposite, unless you're baking it :lol.

i finally got my vader last thursday! :banana:chew

but i didn't have time to provide my comments immediately cos i was away for a short vacation. and my camera has been borrowed so i can't provide pics, but here are just a few quick thoughts on it...

the first thing i noticed was the packaging design. now, fyi this is my first-ever 1/6 figure by sideshow. all this while, i've been accustomed to (and spoiled by) hot toys' amazingly innovative packaging. so comparatively, sideshow's seemed a little boring and uninspired to me. on its own it's not a bad design, just kinda plain. but it has very detailed text on the inside, which is better than ht's stuff which usually has very sparse (and not well-written) info. but head's up sideshow, i spotted a major typo error: "Anakin Skywaler" ??? :duh

as soon as i opened it up, i completely forgot about the packaging.

this darth vader is HUGE! i stood him next to my ht predator1, and poor pred looked like a shorty next to vader. :D like many folks here have said, he may be a little bit too tall (14.5 inches according to my ruler). but i honestly don't have a problem with his height. vader is and should be an imposing figure, and this excess height sure helps convey that when he's on display.

the helmet issue IS an issue for me. again, this has been endlessly discussed so i won't really elaborate on it. just wanna say that from a front angle with his head completely level, he looks a bit weird. but if u pose him with his head tilted slightly upwards and at a 3/4 angle away from you, the helmet looks perfectly fine. to me, anyway.

the armour, robes and bodysuit all look great, imo. i like the mix of textures and shades, so his costume has clear definition. which is not easy to pull off, considering his predominant colour is black. but sideshow pulled it off.

the cape is a little less successful though. the cloth is too thin to drape as it should in the movies. and it creases too easily. but i put that down to the fact that the material is in 1/6 scale, so it's forgiveable.

the paint apps are also pretty good, and i especially like the high gloss of his helmet dome and the boots. i would've preferred a little less use of grey on the face though. but i understand they were trying to create visual separation between the face panels. a darker grey would've been better imo. not as jarring. still, on the shelf at a distance, it becomes a non-issue and probably helps define vader's visage more clearly.

the only thing i didn't really like was the very limited leg articulation. i know the real costume david prowse wore was also quite restrictive. but this is a figure and i feel some slight liberties should've been taken to allow more freedom of movement. as it is right now, i can't get vader to do much more than a "legs-slightly-apart" pose. when i try bending his knees, he can't stand on his own cos the ankle has almost ZERO articulation. makes for kinda boring poses. however, i'm happy with the pose i've got him in now: the leaning-forward-with-fist-outstretched-in-air pose when confronting luke (after revealing he's his father) on bespin in epV.

overall, i rate this alongside the best hot toys has to offer. if hot toys had done vader, they'd likely have given him a light-up saber and working lights on his armour. other than that, i don't see how much better another company could've done it (helmet issue notwithstanding).

well done sideshow. i've not been impressed with a lot of your comiquettes and 1:1 stuff recently. but this figure shows why u guys are still a major player in the world of collectibles.

Has anyone tried to iron the cape or inner robe? My Vader needs it, but I'm a little scared to do it--the material feels very delicate. I'm curious about the temperature setting, if you actually put the iron to the cape, or if you just blasted it with steam.

Just got my Vader at last! Add me to the list of people that are totally satisfied with this figure. All the things I thought would bother me about him like the silver tusk or being to tall are a total non-issue when he is displayed in the detolf. Great job Sideshow!

Ah my bad then :lol but when i did the boiling water i could reshape it in 20 seconds, but with a hairdryer it wouldn't budge unless roasted, then it warped/shrank.

You may want to try some of that wrinkle releaser spray (not sure of the brand). I have used that on my figures with no ill effects, rather than chancing the iron.

If that doesn't work, or you do feel the need to iron, you can always cover the cape with a towel or handkerchief so that the iron doesn't directly touch the material of the cape. I use this method on my ties and pants for my uniform and it works great.

It's just amazing as it is... but me being me... I'm going to lower the dome (slightly) and tilt it back. I'm going to lower the head itself slightly closer to the shoudlers, to get rid of the gap between the neck piece and the shoulder armour. and........ well, thats about it.

oh wait, I'm going to add the widows peak at the front of the dome. Thers a few scratches on the dome so it would need replacing/repainting anyway. I was considering extending the flare at the back, but after comparing it to screencaps... its the right size. (it might be slightly too thin when viewed from the front... but the side profile is exactly right... it just needs tilting back slightly and lowering)

so those things will give me something to do...... whenever... i get some spare time :lol

I allowed myself to finish a bit early tonight (well I was at my desk at 7am this morning lol) so I did some work on Vader. Damn this is a nice piece... is just feels so... chunky.. in hand. I love it.

Unfortunately I didn't take any photos during the process (sorry guys, I didn't even think!) :o Anyway I did what I said i was going to do.

I dremelled down his chest, and padded up his waist.

I put foam padding under the shoulder armour to lift it slightly, to close the gap between the armour and the helmet-neck. ( I was going to lower the head initially.. but this turned out to be way more work that I wanted to do, and luckily... doing it this way has actually maintained better proportions)

I cut/sanded his arms thinner under his armpits, to let his arms fall closer to his sides. Sadly this only made a small amount of difference due to the thick folds of the undersuit. I should have cut more away... but it's fine.

I took the helmet off, shaved down the supporting 'spines' that run around the plug that goes into the hole on the top of his head. I did this until it could sit at the right height, however then when I tilted it back, it stuck too far out at the front. So i had to do more cutting and shaping of the hole itself making it bigger... and various parts of his head & helmet. Eventually it would sit right, and I glued it. (only temporary... as I want to make the widow's peak.. but that's another day. This looks good enough for now)

With all these done, even when the head is straight (not tilted back) the dome goes back to the shoulders, and the gap under his neck has gone too. (slightly less articulation... but only slightly. And I'm happier with it like this)

Anyway.... pics. As I've got to go downstairs now and figure out what I'm cooking for Jane :lol (just had a text, she's on her way home from work lol I'm a good house husband )

well its already back in the box for now (no room to display until i get my new studio cleared/decorated) but when I get around to taking the helmet off to do the widow's peak I'll try to remember to take some pics...although theres not much to see. I was playing it by ear... so there's no 'instructions' really.

Don't forget guys, this fella has a double jointed neck.. so pull his head forward that helps with his posture (making him have that natural forward neck that we all have - including david prowse) also it helps a little with the back of the dome and the shoulders

Whew...OK I did it!!! I modded the dome placement on my Vader:vader Let me tell you that dome placement on this figure makes ALL the difference. I actually modded the head rather than the dome. It was actually very easy to do. I just removed the dome and cut about 3/16 to 1/4 of an inch off the top of the head with my dremel. Didn't have to be too careful since this part is always coverd by the dome. Then just reposition the dome... trim anymore excess as needed and DONE! Now my Vader looks 110% better.

Good luck to all who try it out!

Don't forget guys, this fella has a double jointed neck.. so pull his head forward that helps with his posture (making him have that natural forward neck that we all have - including david prowse) also it helps a little with the back of the dome and the shoulders

Thanks for that tip. I was not aware of that. Will give it a try.

yeah, i forgot to take a front on photo *oops* also my cam decided to ever so slightly underexpose vader on my pics... which doesnt let you see much detail. Even if it DOES look great and moody lol. I'll try to take a pic in the next day or two.

Great stuff Darren. That shoulder idea is exactly what I was planning to do. Glad it works so successfully, it makes all the difference.

the combination of raising the shoulder armour, and lowering/tilting back the dome really makes a small (but noticeable) difference.

I wish I had the talent to do what you did Darren. I'm not really thrilled with my Vader as is.

Really? That's too bad.... I absolutely loved mine when it came out of the box. I only did this because... well... it's what i do :lol

I'd be more than happy with the standard figure though. If its the dome that bothers you try pushing the head forward (not tilting it.. keep it level... but move the bottom joint forward, as if he's sticking his chin out... I found doing that helped bring the back of the dome closer to the shoulders a little, and gave him a more natural slouch.

got mine today and love it but boy, ITS HEAD (as well as his his body) IS HUGE! is that the reason you are all attempting this helmet mod? its my 1st SS figure after owning 9 HT figures! he absolutely towers over everything else in my detolf including supposedly 7ft predators! is this right? i know david prowse was over 7ft but man, darth looks like an 8 footer next to my HT dutch/pred!! is SS darth at the correct scale??

im not complaining! i was just shocked at his size/height! i was expecting a 12 inch figure to come but this is more like a PF!-im sure his nearer to 15" !??

Story seems to be that the silver rubbed off at some point in the filming. Since movies are shot in non-linear fashion, the missing paint appears sporadically in the movie. It all depends on when scenes were filmed.

Coorectghosting

MaulFan

It most definitely was missing paint a number of times. Sometimes, it didn't matter so much because light from the set would catch on the forms of the tusk and leave enough highlight to almost look as if it was painted, but you can also seeing looking at those shots, the painted one is significantly birghter.

Hey guys.

On the screen used ANH helmet, but tusks are machined aluminum.
Vader's right tusk (left if you are looking at him) has a black paint wash over it. It is not completely solid black, more like the black partially rubbed off.
It was an intentional design choice and appeared throughout the entire movie.

In ESB and ROTJ, both tusks are bare aluminum.

Raising the shoulder armour, and lowering/tilting back the dome restricts the head articulation a bit... but there's enough for virtually all Vader poses I'd guess. Certainly enough for me :)

I had the same issue but the smudge was actually where the helmet had rubbed the packaging. The one on mine was about 6mm across (the size of a BB). I showed it to SS and they offered to replace it.

Send them a pic and they can probably do the same for you.

This figure (and I have it, and I'll post a pic) is Sideshow's best so far IMO. Truly awesome!

unbelievable pics. So good! (love the lighting, very clever)

I think we're really lucky to have this figure... even with its innacuracies (if you're of the picky nature)

It's incredible that we have a 12" figure here (ok ok.. 14" figure :lol) that looks BETTER than the Premium Format statue. Well done Sideshow. Well done. :bow :bow :bow

Thanks for the kind words Darren! I'm still mucking about with lighting trying to teach myself so it's a bit hit and miss at the moment.

But your right, Vader has gone straight to the top of my favourite Sideshow figures. I always liked my Medi Vader but I'm looking at them now side by side and there really is no contest.

Sideshow rocks on this one :rock

Awesome pics Darthgothikus!

I will be getting my Vader today along with Stormtrooper Luke and Han! They are all "on vehicle for delivery". Sitting here at work, knowing they are somehwere in town, is driving me crazy! I wish I could have taken the day off, but I have too much to do...which, ironically, isn't getting doen.

Got my Vader today, FINALLY!!! It looks great.

Question, how did you guys get the dome off??? I am afraid of pulling too hard and breaking it.

Darthgothikus
07-23-2009, 08:42 AM
Haven't tried pulling mine off (Oh god, I can't type anything without it sounding like innuendo!)

But from what I've read here sounds like helmet is held on by one central peg and a few dabs of superglue.

A few good hard tugs should have it off in your hand. (Sorry! I can't help it sniger!) But don't blame me if you damage your helmet.

Yeah I know it is. I read through this thread and didnt see any tips for removing the dome. I guess I will just have to be careful!:D

Gothikus love the pics, the signature is well done that without knowing it is 1/6th scale figure you couldn't tell.

Good work :emperor

Darthgothikus m8 awesome piccies.

Btw peeps Play.com has him in stock woohoo :banana:chew

Hey i also modded my SSC stormies and they can stand up on their own, as they have been for the last few days.

Turn the foot balljoint sideways so the foot only tilts sideways. Then use a hot glue gun and put a small drop on the front and back of the balljoint as it meets the foot. It also acts as a nice solid fix for the shin guard to stay against as well making the leg even more rigid.

I will post some piccies when i get vader and show you what i did with the feet.

Sounds like a one way fix!

Aren't the feet stuck in one position then?

(Mind you, probably better than having them sat on their faces like mine most of the time!)

Crimsonbob
07-23-2009, 09:30 AM
Yeah u cant tilt them forward or back, but if u move the shin guard up u can tilt them sideways ok.

I also stripped mine off and put a bit of black tape around the top knee joint and also around the waist and hip joints. Only on the ones with loose knees and hips though. I also pulled the black body suit up in certain areas so the armour has something tight to fit against. I could have put some padding in but i wanted to see if they could all stand up ok after my mod.

Saves me spending a fortune on Truetypes. If i only had 2 stormies id go with Truetypes tbh, but ive got 6 so no way :lol

Darthgothikus
07-23-2009, 09:36 AM
LOL - I'm toying with ordering a couple of the Truetype Slim bodies - Are they a straight swap out? Will hands, feet and Helmets fit?

Was considering swapping my medis and marmit onto them as well If they'd fit - but that means buying at least seven bodies :google - I don't need to spend that money!!!

Crimsonbob
07-23-2009, 09:39 AM
Im sure it would be a rather easy conversion, as long as u get the balljoint neck on the truetype. U might have to drill out or fill in the hand and foot joins on the body though. Personally i would drill out the foot and hand joins then put some tape around the stormies foot and hand pegs if they were to small.

I may be wrong and they may fit straight off.

does anyone else think his gloves are a touch too long? They start the right distance from his elbow joint... but the gloves are longer than reference photos show.. and it makes his forearms look slightly long. I was thinking of shortening them.... but it's subtle enough that I can ignore it... just shows up on some poses

yep. noticed that right away
