Yeah, I was gonna use the Solo quote about delusions of grandeur... but someone else already did...

There's nothing wrong with wanting a better product, but thre comes a time when you just have to let go and enjoy... if you are still capable of that!

Exactly. Perfection is unattainable... just ask Sir Gawain about that trip.

Discussions are good-- but we've had this discussion before about only pictures in the official photo thread for a new product. For those of us who are still waiting for the character (and I include myself in that group) due to purchasing him in an indirect fashion (for $$$ reasons) we'd like to live vicariously through those of you that have the picture... More pictures please.

Sorry that happened Serg ! I do think you fgure was messed with big time by customs . Definatly call Sideshow and at least try to get a new chest box. The codpieces looks like it can be glued.

Mine came with the left Tusk Plate not being glued onto the helmet . An easy fix but still pretty annoying if your a MIB collector . I also noticed that the glue that was supposed to be used on the Tusk got on the helmet . I decided at that point I'm better off boxing it up , and finish fixing it another day and having it join my other sith on the shelf. Its in good shape otherwise.

I have a regular version coming in a few days for Alter Ego Comics so I'm just going to switch out the Vaders and trays and put the Reg away.

Great shots, Jim! He does looks awesome...
Hope to add a few of my own in the next couple of weeks now that my WL for a regular one just converted to an order...

Keep that cool shots coming, folks!

....and while the conversation has taken a somewhat "spirited" tone...let's keep it from spinning out of control like a certain TIE fighter knocked away from an about-to-explode Death Star...please keep it civil! Thanks...

Thanks, jedibear. And thanks for attempting to get the thread back on line!

Whew! I hadn't checked out the thread since I posted my pics yesterday, and :google oh, the humanity!

I still want to see other people's pictures here. It's nice to see how varied everyone's collections are--and it's kinda cool (in a voyeuristic kind of way) to get a peek at other people's homes and offices!

Although seeing things like your pic, jkno, makes baby jebus cry :monkey2
I would be totally heartbroken! But rest assured Sideshow will replace it at no cost to you--including shipping (I'm pretty sure).

I'm also thinking more and more of the customs playing with my doll scenario. I always hated customs and what they are supposed to do, always thought 99% of times they are just wasting time, money and play with peoples' nerves.

Maybe SS will just send replacement parts: chest box with straps and crotch armor and belt. Would these be easy to remove and replace with new ones? The crotch armor would be hard to glue unless taking it off those pins are very small and barely enter/fit the holes in the belt. so they'd better send the belt with crotch armor in one.

Not sure of the e-mail address I usually just call them. It sounds right though.
I very confident they will make it right for you. Since the figure itself is fine I'm guessing it wion't be a big deal for them to send you the parts.

I'm just as excited to receive the Regular version as I was the Exclusive . Should have it tomorrow or Monday , then next week is the Stormtrooper Commnader and hopefully Han and Luke in ST disguise.

My Vader arrived yesterday (in mint condition thankfully). After hearing all the horror stories, I was scared mine would arrive with broken tusks or a detached dome because if there is anything that can go wrong with a figure, it usually happens to mine. Got lucky this time though. I am very pleased with Vader. I was scared the dome size would be very obvious to me, but I don't think I would have even noticed it if I had not been a regular visitor to the boards. Sure it could be a teeny bit larger to be more screen accurate, but it's not a glaring problem that detracts from the essence of the character the way the Utapau Clone helmet would have been if not corrected (in my opinion). This is definitely my favorite SS piece to-date, but Vader has always been one of my favorite characters so I'm a little biased. I’m just torn on how to pose him - so many possibilities. The only problem I can see with this figure is the hands which I don't think many folks have mentioned. I am always scared to death that I am going to break off a peg on my figures arms and now with the Vader having the pegs inside the hands rather than attached to the arm, I did just that with my "outreached" Vader hand last night. As I was trying to remove it from the arm, the peg from the hand remained attached to the arm so I had to remove it from the arm and superglue it back into the hand. Now, I'm scared to switch out the hands and that's really disappointing because Vader is a figure that I would probably switch out more than any of my figures. I’m very pleased with the costume itself. The stitching on the cape really bothered me in the SDCC photos, but I never even noticed it once I had the figure in hand. I am very pleased with Vader - fantastic figure at a very good price. Really looking forward to seeing more pics of Vader so I can get some more posing ideas!

The crotch armor seems to be connected to the body suit with only 3 very small and short pegs - I'm really interested how is this the first Vader to have this problem - but maybe others are glued all the way to the strap.

Yeah strap is not really fixable if broken... but if the 3 pegs are intact on the crotch armor they should be able to be pushed back through the belt. I'm thinking that is how they are all attached.

If you remove the belt I think you could probably put it back together... but if not at least ya tried.

Well if liking the current Vader is being satisfied with less then good for me!
For a mass produced figure it definatly stands above the rest in pretty much every aspect . Medicoms is decent but SS's is much better executed and $25
less. I'm not even going to bother compairing it to Hasbros.

That's the difference! That 1:1 costume is just that, 1:1 and much easier to make look like the real thing AND it's NOT mass produced. It is WAY more difficult to get film accuracy when something is 6x smaller in scale and is mass produced quickly to get product out.

I'm overall happy with my Vader and will probably do some mods to the helmet and this is what I expect from a MASS PRODUCED 6X SMALLER THAN NORMAL ACTION FIGURE. This isn't rocket science people, IT'S A TOY!

Yeah I think it is in this thread on page 250 or some odd :). Yeah take the helmet dome off and remove the strips inside the helmet so it will ride lower. I was able to snap them out with needlenose pliers and it was fine.

Well said!! Also its not fair to compair as mass produced figure to a custom figure i.e Hurricanes vs Sideshows. The custome can be made as you please
the mass produce figure has many varibles that have to be considered .

It is interesting to hear from someone who is an acknowledged expert (acknowledged by many, not just himself) and I can see the points Gino is making.

I know that the costume for Vader changed from day to day during shooting, were there any that were so different that they might explain the differences on the figure?

Also there's nothing wrong with those of us who enjoy the figure still enjoying it. I do think it's unfortunate that the more you've been exposed to the minutiae of a prop or costume, the less you can enjoy any mass produced product based on that subect.

I'm not saying any of you should not enjoy your figure.
If you are happy with it, that is all that matters. Regardless of what I or anyone else has to say.

With that in mind, you have to understand, that just because you are satisfied with this level of accuracy, doesn't mean everyone else is.
Just admit it. When it comes to collectables, you are in the 'very easy to please' category. There's nothing wrong with that.
And I'd say that there are a lot more products out there for 'you', than for 'us'.

Satisfaction is relative term, and different for everyone.

You've made it quite clear that this is what it takes to impress you. Now try to imagine a figure (at the same price) that is a LOT more accurate. Even to the standards of the so called prop snobs.
You're head would explode right off your shoulders, and you'd be first in line to buy it. Even if it was above your head exactly WHY, it looked better, you would still be able recognize it and you'd be all over it.

For the life of me, I can't understand why people have such a problem with wanting to see the envelope pushed (when it so easily can be).

In any case, as I said before, there's nothing wrong with criticizing inaccuracies, and I actually think it's a good thing -- to a point. But I don't like it when the argument goes from "X is inaccurate" to "how on earth can you guys be happy with this?" We are pragmatists. We recognize that the figure isn't perfect, but we don't let that ruin our appreciation of what is good with the figure.

It's not like there are a lot of companies to choose from when it comes to 1/6 scale Star Wars figures. If we choose to "vote with our wallets" and not buy something that is inaccurate, it won't change Sideshow. Other people will still buy these Vaders. Trust me. What it means is thats that we won't have a Vader in our collections (short of commissioning something, but that's not economically viable for everyone). In the end, I'd rather have a slightly inaccurate Vader in my collection than none at all.

As opposed to the eccentricity of expecting perfection out of a $120 1:6 scale toy? I can be critical when it counts. I just don't think Vader is so far off from "screen accurate" to justify the 300 or so pages of the repetitive whining about a dome or minor paint differences.

Ironically, enough the only new awesome pics are from Medi-World! :lol (sorry if I over looked anyone else's pics... but they are lost in the quagmire).

I'm sorry I even posted this cos now I'm taking part!

Please post more pics :monkey2

The helmet issue can be fixed. I'm more disappointed we didn't get the force choke hand as it was advertised.

http://i29.tinypic.com/2sae6au.jpg

Yes, the index finger on the Sideshow hand is bent a bit, but the thumb and the rest of the fingers need to be extended further out as well.

Instead, we got something more like this. Yes, this is cool too. But I would like to have seen an obvious looking choke hand as an additional accessory, or at least come through with it since it was advertised as the exclusive.

Excuse me? I am very happy with the look of Vader. In hand, there's little not to like. I'm talking about a missing accessory hand that was advertised as the exclusive. I had my hopes up for it and I was just expressing my disappointment for it missing. This has nothing to do with the accuracy of the figure.

ProgMatinee
07-16-2009, 01:02 PM
well i actually like the pointing finger better as it fits with figures we actually have, Leia and the Praji, but I think its sad we didn't get both. I feel bad for people that didn't get the exclusive because to me its the best hand we got.

MaulFan
07-16-2009, 01:05 PM
I'm glad with the way the Ex. hand was handled, we could have a pointy hand or a Force choke hand, but instead we get one that can serve as both. The right pose and view, I find it works just fine as a Force choke hand, even if not the exact gesture, and in other poses and views, it's a nice pointing finger, much more diverse. i don't think it's a specific pointing hand or surely the finger would be much straighter, like Medi-ROTJ Vader has, and not as curved.

Sean, I agree that the hand appears to be a conglomerate of both. But to be honest, I would have gladly paid a few extra dollars to get both hands in their proper forms. This is also why I am a proponent of accessory packs. If something is forgotten or missing with a figure, they can still release these features without us having to wait for another figure (e.g. ESB Vader) to be announced down the line.

Well ya, 2 hands would be great, I'm just speaking under the assumption we likely would have got one, so I'm glad it can serve duel purposes.

That's what the regular Vader "discussion" thread is for. It's around here. People are just too f'n lazy to look for it. Unfortunately, it still doesn't stop the incessant repetition for the base of the complaints.

It's not laziness, it's that people don't understand, you can't have just an image thread, you'd have to have a gallery that litterally is no words, just photos uploaded, in a thread, photos are going to bring about commentary and that's why threads get lost on tangents of conversation when they're theoretically for photos, half the fun of seeing photos is talking about them. Yes things derail or go on with more talking than images, but that's nature of discussion. Either you have a place with nothing but imagery, no discussion at all, or you have discussion and have to embrace that stretches of dialogue will happen.

I understand that. What I'm referring to are the hundreds of posts whining about the same thing, over and over and over and over. Asking about an image, or how one did a custom in their picture is one thing. But literally transplanting the exact same whiny comments that plagued the discussion thread into the photo thread gets old after the first 20 or so posts stating the same old ^^^^. Doubtful that'll ever happen though as they'd be left to their own BS ranting while everyone else who gives two ^^^^s or a ^^^^ about this figure would be praising it in the photo thread. This is why I think they come here. :huh

Possibly, but for Chewie, the base body should be about the width of the midsection on the Vader body all the way from shoulders to feet, Vader's got a broader upper body and wider legs, as he should. Might be good for Tarfful or other, beefier Wookies.

Vader was the most important figure for me this year, together with the Stormtrooper - you know I love Imperials Smiley. And he really looks cool, SS did a great job on him. But arrived in the condition you seen. It seems Jaclyn at SS asked me to destroy Vader and they will ship a new one. I'll post these pics when arriving home. See Jaclyn email message below:

Dear Sergiu,

Thank you for taking the time to contact Sideshow Collectibles and provide the requested photos. I’m so sorry to see that your collectible arrived damaged.

I have looked into our available inventory and have booked you a replacement order for the 12” Darth Vader Exclusive. At this time we ask that you please destroy your piece as it is not necessary to return your statue. Please read the precautions listed below before destroying your item. After you have destroyed your statue, please be sure to provide .jpg formatted photos in a return email to us. Upon receipt of the requested photos, your replacement piece will be shipped out to you at no additional charge. We ask that you provide photos within the next five business days or by 07/23/09.

It would be cool, but in the apartment where I live it would be impossible, in the courtyard the neighbors would call police and firemen (they called police when a neighbor dog barked too loud LOL). And don't have time to go to the local forest or somewhere else to do it... sorry

Come one. Burn the guy. Being arrested would just add even more to the video.

D'oh!

Maybe run my neighbor's truck over it :D If I drown him would be ok with SS? :lol

At the very least, cut off his legs at the knees, his left arm and have Obi-Wan bending over him, stealing his lightsaber.

There's lots of posts in here with reference photos of the ANH Vader showing one tusk wasn't painted in a lot of scenes. My guess is SS did it to 'differentiate' it even more from ESB, ROTJ and ROTS Vader...

So anyone who did the dremmel mod post images of the inside of the helmet? Not sure if I'd bother or not... but I have to glue it down (was loose when he came) so if its not too much trouble I might go ahead and try the mod.
I'm much too embarassed to show my shoddy dremel work (the majority of my demel experience is "fixing" shallow Hasbro figure heads to reduce giraffe populations), but the idea is to sand down the spacers around the post. It took me about 40 minutes with a my copy of Chronicles opened to the pictures of Vader from ANH and testing every 5-10 minutes.

I wouldn't have bothered bit since the dome came unglued and I had to glue the black tusk back on (bang up job in QC, Sideshow), I decided to go for it.

Sideshow gave us an incredibly small cape collar, so in order for the collar to fit around the mask, as it does in certain scenes of the movie, I had to use a longer chain. If you have any suggestions on how to make it better, I'm all ears.

Also, does anyone else notice on theirs that the inner cape lining is longer than the outer cape in some areas at the bottom so it flips inside out? You can see that in the pics with Vader's feline duel.

Mine just showed up today (from ATG Collectibles) and WOW. If there are any fencesitters left: believe the hype. Sideshow's best work ever? It just might be. I collect a lot of Hot Toys, and this is one of the very few Sideshow pieces that can stand right next to them and look right at home.

I'm a little amazed the one-silver-tusk thing actually bothers some people... I mean, if it really distracts you even a totally unskilled collector could dab the tip with a little silver model paint.

EDIT/ADDENDUM: No comparison to the MediVader. I own that one too, and even though they look comparable in photos (aside from the height difference), the Sideshow Vader just feels better in your hand, heavier and sturdier. You could actually let a (careful) kid play with this; the MediVader always felt a little delicate/chintzy to me.

Sideshow gave us an incredibly small cape collar, so in order for the collar to fit around the mask, as it does in certain scenes of the movie

Pretty sure the only scene where the cape and chain were exposed around the mask was on Tantive IV and then under it, as the SSC figure is, for the rest of the scenes.

I love the scale too. The ultimate movie villain towers above all other 1/6th figs as he should.

That is what I was thinking too. Hopefully this time they'll send it with Express Mail and thus customs will be in my city and they could open up the package in front of me.

first off ...Jkno's pic....OUCH!!!!
2nd....moded my Vader as well. Helmet lowered and tilted back.I'm a little weary about flaring the dome, so I think I'll leave mine as is.
