View Full Version : Updated Rules
Darklord Dave

Everyone should have received an email copy of the updated rules, unless you haven't changed your email address on here.
The most significant change is the implementation of the infraction system - break the rules - get an infraction. 15 infractions - banned for life.
Please see the FAQ if you didn't get the rules in an email.

I just read them, good that everyone has a copy so there is no "No one told me" stuff. :D

They all seem pretty reasonable on a cursory reading. On the whole I think this is a great forum with a light touch approach that works, because Dave doesn't take himself too seriously. The worst forums - think gallifreyone - inform their members that they have no right to free speech and harrass members with unnecessary modding. This one works really well without any of that crap.
I do wonder why P E N I S is a banned word though, when ****** is okay.

Read the rules again Capt. Circumventing the language filter will get you an infraction. :lol

What about words that are rude in America but not in my beloved England, or vice versa? I see the potential for genuine misunderstandings. I hope the rules take account of cultural differences and are not going to be applied in a narrowly parochial manner.

I don't think there will be misunderstanding because my understanding its just in regard to circumventing the language filter. If you type a naughty word and it gets filtered leave it alone, going back and changing it to get around the filter is where you'll get in trouble.
First infraction = :banana
Second infraction = :monkey4

I have a question about one of the new rules. I would just ask Darklord Dave, but figure others might have a similar question at some point. The rules say:
"Also if you are not a collectibles dealer and you put a link to a website selling something in your signature you will be immediately banned."
In other forums, I have a link to the http://www.animalrescuesite.com in my signature. They sell stuff, but I post the link because you can press a button and donate food to shelter dogs for just pressing the button (it also has similar links for breast cancer research, hungry kids in Africa, childhood literacy, etc.). Would I be "immediately banned" if I made this my signature? What if you are a guy with your own website, and you sell a t-shirt with your forum name on it or something, but aren't a collectibles dealer?
I'm not trying to be a jerk, just want to know if this is a "letter of the law" type of thing, or if there is room for reasonable people to post links that technically violate this rule, but aren't trying to sell prescription drugs or shill for an online dealer or something.

It's all open to interpretation. Dave's interpretation. It depends on his mood and how obvious your bending of the rules is. That's my take on the email. I would say your link will not be a problem.
I'm wondering how we go about disputing an infraction handed to us by one of the other mods. Other than Dave's word being final, is there an appeals process?
They all seem pretty reasonable on a cursory reading. On the whole I think this is a great forum with a light touch approach that works, because Dave doesn't take himself too seriously. This rule needs to be rewritten, what you're saying is perfectly acceptable.
This rule was created because of spammers coming in and posting innocuous things, but having a link in their sig to sell phones or time share or what not.

How do you know if you have any infractions ?
How do you know if you have any infractions ?
I finally figured this out, as I had the same question and no one gave any answers.
Go to "User CP", "Your Profile" on the left, and then the "Infractions" tab.
It appears you can only view your own and not others.
GrueSam
04-09-2009, 08:03 AM

Are you saying there's a tab alongside Visitor Messages, About Me, Statistics, Friends, and Contact Info?
Or somewhere else?

Yep, thats right Sam, as far as I know if you have any infractions, a tab labelled that will be on there, when you go into it, it will state what the infraction was for.
You must be a good girl. :lol
Plus, if you (meaning anyone) are issued one, you will get a pm to let you know why
People are only able to see your own, not anybody else's so no-one (except Dave and the mods) will know you have any unless you tell them.

Please see the FAQ
Link please.
I have a hard time even finding the rules, let alone the FAQ. How about a section that is headed. "THE RULES". One that no one but yourself can post in, and is the first thing you see when you join up, or is the first section, so it's easily referenced.
I know I've seen it somewhere. It's probably a sticky at the top of one of the sections, but it shouldn't be that hard to find. This section could have the rules, as one thread, infractable offences as a second thread, FAQ as a third, and so on.

:banghead I saw that after the post. :duh Even so, it shows it's easy when you know where to look. Trouble was I never looking for the FAQ for anything, just mentioned it as an aside. Yeah, I know it made me look stupid, or really that should be I made me look stupider.
Still, I see a forest and can't find the rules tree. It shouldn't be so hard. I wanted to check a point of contention. A dedicated section would make it more obvious. Is it any wonder people wonder why they can't sell or bypass the language filter. It may be because they looked. Couldn't find it easily enough and moved on, to be later reprimanded for crossing a line.
